Time Machine / capsule Error.... help!

Hi all,
I have had a time capsule for a while now and had no problems (apart from filling it up and needing to delete the contents - which I have done a good few weeks ago). Anyway all of a sudden this morning I am getting 2 error messages.
_The First:_
*Time Machine Error*
The backup volume is read only.
To select a different volume, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine.
_The Second:_
*Disk Repair*
The disk "backup" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible.
So whats my best plan of action? I'm not bother loosing what is on the Time Capsule as I only backed up last week and can easily back up work completed since then from my iMac. Is this something I have caused without knowing (I usually just let it do its backup's automatically and do not interfere). Is it something which is a problem on the disk its self and perhaps going to be a reoccurring problem? If so should I take it back and get a new one?
All advise very much appreciated.

A final update as its all seems to be sorted now. I did as requested by the chap in Apple. This did not work, and I was unable to mount the TC HDD on my desktop so I was unable to erase the data. I took it into the Apple shop and the very very helpful chap connected it to his mac via cable (I'd not tried this as my iMac is upstairs in the office and the TC is used as my router and I had no choice but to put it downstairs where the broadband comes into the house). Anyway, he formatted the HDD and Time Machine worked without issue.
However he tried to drag and drop a file onto the TC HDD and could not get it to work at all. He got another TC from the shelf and the same thing happened. He then changed the macbook he was using and this time it worked no problems to either TC. I've yet to try this (not something I would usually do anyway - I have another EHDD to do that with), but once the first back up using TM has finished I'll have a go.
If you have similar issues - and can't get it to work (Joshz's idea would not work as disk utility could not see the TC HDD) and your using it wirelessly, connect it with a wire and format it. Thankfully I back up to CD's and important files to another EHDD regularly and I lost nothing - be warned and back up else where as well as to the TC!

    Hey!
Looking at your OSX you're running 10.4. (Tiger). For Time Machine/capsule you need 10.5(Leopard) which is available to buy from Apple or other Software distributors. You do not have it with Tiger.
    Cheers,

I recently changed from a Mac Pro to an iMac. Despite using Migration Assistant, a large chunk of my recent emails and nearly all of my wife's emails have disappeared in transit. Strangely, emails from my distant past are still there. Time Machine is no help; the messages may be on my backup disc but they're behind an invisible  icon. Any ideas as to how I can get them back?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Time Machine File Loction Help

I have purchased a 500gb external, MAC specific hard drive and I have set up and ran Time Machine without error. The about section says "Initially, Time Machine makes a complete backup, including system files, applications, accounts, preferences, music, photos, documents—everything you keep on your computer, except for a few temporary files (such as web browser caches)."
My question is: Where are my specific files (pictures, documents, and music)? I have navigated most of the 58gb with no luck.
    *Macbook Pro> Latest> Macintosh HD>*
    Applications>
    Library>
    System>
    *User Guide Information>*

These are my choices. I thought they would be in the library but there are so many files.
    Many thanks in advance.
BTW, I use the factory "Documents" folder, iTunes for music and iPhoto for pictures.

OK, I have seen the error of my ways. I had File Vault turned on. I still have my Windows mentality sometime, "blah, blah message this, message that, blah.....just OK past it all and we'll be OK" So..........I started over with Time Machine and there is a message, that I still don't fully understand, that say something to the effect that you have File Vault turned on and only such and such files will be backed up and you will not be able to read the User files and yadda yadda yadda.
Basically it says, since your files are encrypted we're not going to pull them over because you won't be able to read them. I think. The best I can tell, if you have File Vault on, it will only pull over system data (MIDI controllers, drivers, etc).
Short story long, I turned off File Vault, started Time Machine again and now in the file tree I have my user account data (ie. Photos, Music, Documents).
Thanks Guys, I knew where you were trying to lead me but the directory was just not there and it was killing me.

  • Can I use Time Machine/Capsule more simply?

Every month, I plug in my external backup hard drive, delete all files from the last time I did a backup, and then copy my {user name} folder from my Mac to the hard drive. It takes awhile but serves my needs.
I would use Time Machine/Capsule if could be configured to be simple.
    1) I don't need all the program files off my laptop, just my data (I can always re-install apps).
    2) I don't need incremental backups (i.e. see the state of a file 3 months ago vs 2 months ago); I just need the last one I backed up.
Can I configure Time Machine/Capsule to do just this simply? I'm all about using Apple programs but would need it to be simple.
    Thanks.

That makes no sense to me. I just want to back up my data folder
Why? Why not let Time Machine back up your entire system? That's what it was designed to do, and will protect you best that way. Yes, the first backup will copy everything, so it will take a long time (connect your Mac to the TC via an Ethernet cable if at all possible for this).
But thereafter, TM's hourly backups of only what's new or changed should be very quick.
Then when your internal HD fails, one simple step will recover your entire system to the exact condition it was in at the time of any backup (see #14 in the FAQ Tip below).
And the configuration is a one-time process, and quite simple.

Hello, my mail is gone and I can't find it anywhere. Its not in library and I have not configured Time Machine yet. Help please?!

Use Find Any File, if the old messages might have been in a specific mailbox, to look for a file by the name of the mailbox to see if there are any larger versions of that mailbox.
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
If your Mail is indeed gone, you may be able to recover it with one of the data recovery tools here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
But act quickly.  Every action while the computer is turned on weakens its chances of recovery.  There is a slim chance also your email provider may have tape backup from before you checked your messages and after it arrived at their server for certain messages.  You may want to ask them if that might have happened.

  • Time Machine Backup error - The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Extreme.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).

I am getting a Time Machine backup error "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Extreme.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."
Then a Finder window pops up with the backup directory in it.  When I open it I see all the backups that were completed successfully and then the one there is simply always shows the data and .inProgress.  I thought that maybe if I could delete the one that is perpetually in progress it would start a new one and run fine, but I won't let me delete it.

Reboot the TC.. or go to the 5.6 utility.. and disconnect all users.. to force it to reconnect.

  • HT201250 Infected time machine/capsule

How does one scrub the time machine/capsule that has become infected and start afresh?

    Ray-Atlanta wrote:
Are there solutions on market to protect the time capsule.
Not that I'm aware of. TimeMachine format is very complex and the volume is normally locked which prevents anything from being manually deleted. Everybody I've ever discussed this with who found a way to delete a file manually ended up with a worthless backup having caused un-repairable damage to the index.
The only thing that makes sense is when an infected file is found on any computer being backed up to have the location of the file open in the Finder and enter TimeMachine, highlight the file, then select "Delete all Backups of "<filename>" from the Action menu (Gear) in the toolbar.
The only way an infected file on your Time Capsule can get loose is by doing a restore from it, so you could just ignore it and it will eventually be deleted over time. Just make a note of the fact that there are infected files and run a scan immediately after doing a restore to clean things up.
Also concerned that the backups on the capsule were not totally erased.
Don't be, if you erased it they are gone. If somebody wants to forensically analyze the hard drive they could possible be recovered, but there is no way it could be harmful to anybody, even if used to restore. Odds are several hundred thousand to one that they were Windows malware, anyway.

  • Time machine/capsule not working - Error 111.

    I love my mac...
But right now I'm ready to throw it off the balcony!
Even since upgrading to lion, I've been having small issues arise, but they normally seem to sort themselves out.
HOWEVER, for some reason, my computer won't connect to the time capsule to back up (can still use it to connect to the internet though)
This is the error message I get:
"The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/computernamehere.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error 111)"
Any ideas?? I can't find anything on these support forums about this problem.
I'm not overly techno-language literate, and I am sorry for that, but I really need to get this fixed, because I'm sick of seeing that message pop up every 5 minutes!!!
    Thanks in advance

    Same problem here.
After some backups my Time Capsule (or my Time Machine, I don't know which one, really) stopped work fine. Then this message appears when I try do a backup: "The backup disk image could not be accessed (error -1)."
I think this happened after I did not make backup for a week. Before this, while I was backing up all day, I didn't have problem.
I believe that is a Time Machine software problem, and not a Time Capsule issue. Buth I can't solve it, like others. Any help will be very usefull for all of us that experiencing this problems.

  • Time Machine/Capsule Password stress-PLEASE HELP

I just bought a Time Capsule and am trying to set up my first back-up on Time Machine. The problem is that when I am prompted to enter my username and password to "access the file server", I plug the info in and it says that it's invalid! I went back and reset everything and checked all my username and password stuff and nothing works. I even re-started in "safe" mode and then started again and nothing. I would call into Mac Support but the iPhone 3G came out today and they are swamped with phone calls. Can anyone help me? I don't want to sit on the phone for hours on hold... :o(

Nope, it didn't change anything. I am getting really frustrated! Any other suggestions? I have also made sure that I am teh administrator on the computer and checked all my passwords and user names to be sure they are what they are supposed to be. sigh

  • Time Capsule isn't talking to Time Machine. Need HELP!

I am experiencing a problem with my Time Machine & Time Capsule
For starters, I'm not much of a techie ....
Have been deleting data stored on Time Machine to make more room for backups. Started getting error message: "Backup volume could not be mounted”
Even though I had not changed passwords, I did this,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2048 and it didn’t work.
So then re-set up the Time Capsule.
That didn’t work and I got a different set of error messages.
Now, “Connecting to backup volume” takes long time then I get this error message “The storage location for Time Machine could not be found”
    Did this : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1337
    Didn’t fix it.
I can copy files to the drive, the WIFI still works, I just can’t use Time Capsule on it.

t does look like I've damaged or destroyed the sparsebundle (whatever that is)
It's the container that Time Machine puts your backups in. It's an odd, special sort of disk image.
I tried both A4 & A5 with no success. Can I completely wipe the airport and reinsall everything?
You can, but that will delete everything.
What happens if I simply delete the sparsebundle?
That will delete only your backups; nothing else. Then you can start over with Time Machine.
How much "other" stuff do you have there? Were you deleting old backups to make room? If so, that's going to be a problem again, sooner or later. The reason is, Time Machine will, by design, fill up all the empty space available to it, then begin deleting the oldest backups when it needs room for new ones. That's great, unless you want to put other things there.
There are a couple of ways around that problem. One is simple: connect a USB drive to your Time Capsule, and put your "other" data there.
The other is to make a (normal) disk image on the Time Capsule's internal disk, to "reserve" a fixed amount of space on it, then put your other files in it.
For future reference, you can delete selected Time Machine backups, or all backups of selected items. See #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
