Time machine causes error message " Disk not properly ejected" with USB backup drive

I am using iMac OS X Lion and Time Machine causes the error message with a WD 1.5 TB drive in aThermaltake dock, USB.  every time I wake up the computer....  Ejection of Time Machine and shut it down and turn opp power to drive causes the error message problem to disappear.   What is the solutin?

If it were mine I would replace the drive with another brand. WD drives EHD's tend to have more issues than any other EHD. If you want to continue using it you can try resetting the SMC (may take 2-3 tries) and/or restarting in Safe Mode to reset some caches, it's possible one or more has become corrupt.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

verify on another Mac if the same
WD is having issues with mavericks as you can see on the WD forum, did you install any WD software (never do that) when you connected the drive for the first time?
possible issue is a dead SATA bridge card or the new WD firmware w/ Mavericks.

Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD

  • Tim Machine: no error messages but not backing up

My Time Machine does not seem to back up any more as it should.
There are no error messages, Time Machine is switched on, spinning once an hour, there is enough space on the external HD. I can enter Time Machine and browse through the history.
    However,
    • When I go back to 14 JUN, it shows me files modified today (17 JUN). Shouldn't this be impossible?
    • When I go to the corresponding folder on the HD, I can see a version of the file in question that was modified on 11 JUN, the day of the very first initial backup. I definitely know that it was modified on13 JUN, though.
Does anyone know what the problem is? Any fix?
Btw, I am switching back and forth between two different external HDs for Time Machine, which worked fine for a long time before things went funny a few weeks ago. Then I completely deleted the whole external HD and started Time Machine over but it seems this did not work (except for a successful initial backup).
I'm on Mac OS 10.6.8 on an iMac 7,1.

I'm having this too, Nokia 6681 and most recent iSync... Contacts are working fine, Calandars are not.
Note that before latest revision Calandars were no problem...

  • Time Machine backups cause error message "Disk No Ejected Properly"

I have a 2011 iMac using OS X version 10.9.4.  I have had to change the external hard drive used with my Time Machine to get more storage.  Every time the Time Machine backs up (every hour), I get the message "Disk Not Ejected Properly"  Eject "FreeAgent GoFlex Drive" before disconnecting or turning it.
I am concerned about any damage that is happening because of this message.  I researched this on this forum and other users had a similar problem.  I tried 2 of the easier solutions: 1) make sure none of the boxes are checked in System Energy Saver (ie. put hard disks to sleep when possible, etc.)  and 2) buy and connect a USB hub that has it's own power supply to keep the external hard drive powered constantly.  Neither of these solutions has worked for me.  I still get the message.  So I have two questions.  First, is damage being done to my computer because it "thinks" that I did not properly eject the disc.  And, second, is there anything else I can do to stop this message besides not using the freeagent disc?

I had the same problem.  it turned out to be a cable issue.  Contact seagate for replacement cable.

  • Frequent message that time machine disk not properly ejected

I am using a 750 GB USB HDD for Time Machine backups.  I am getting frequent pop up message stating that the external drive was not properly ejected when in fact it wasn't ejected at all - on 24/7.  Backups are halted until I click the OK button on the pop up.  This seems to happen when I get back on after the machine wakes up.  I had the same problem with my 2007 iMac (which this machine replaced) and I googled the problem and found that many had the same issue, but couldn't find a solution.

Thanks for the suggestion, Kappy. Indeed my Energy Saver preferences were set to sleep the Hard Drive whenever possible. I just disabled that. My TM drive has not been kicked out since, but I'll know better in a few days if the problem has been completely solved.
    Fingers crossed.

  • Using wall charger for first time I get error message "charging not supported by this accessory."  Been using since December and not seen this before.

Using wall charger and am now getting error message "charging not supported by this accessory."  Have been using since December and this is first time I have encountered this.

Did you look to see if there is debris or dust causing the problem? Get a flashlight and take a look to make sure.
Is there something in the USB end of the cord perhaps?
You didn't answer this question ....Are you using the charger and cord that came with your iPad?
You could try changing cords if you have another one available to see if it is the cord. Have you tried connecting to your computer to see if you get the same message?
You could try a hard reset by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears, let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart. Then try the charger again.

  • Disk not properly ejected

I have an external drive connected by USB and running as a backup under Time Machine.
Every time my iMac goes into Sleep mode it immediately comes up with a system error message 'The Disk was not properly ejected....'
I have spoken to Apple support and after repairing disk permissions and other things they were unable to cure the issue. Disk utility was unable to see the verify and repair disk permission options for the external drive despite being logged in as the administrator that set up the Time Machine backup.
When I eject the external disk the problem no longer occurs

There was an update the other day, for some Macs having troubles with external drives, that might apply here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL947 If you haven't installed it, give it a try.

That is correct. DU only handles permissions on an OSX volume. From Disk Utility's Help:
+*Disk Utility repairs the permissions for files installed by the Mac OS X Installer, Software Update, or an Apple software installer. It doesn’t repair permissions for your documents, your home folder, and third-party applications.+*
+*You can verify or repair permissions only on a disk with Mac OS X installed.+*
p.s., I've asked a Host to edit-out your Mac's serial number. You never know what somebody's liable to do with it.

  • I am having issues with Time Machine. Error message "The backup disk image could not be created.

Error message "The backup disk image could not be created." I have tried everything I have found online in the community from TM full reset  to changing my computers name. Anything else I can try? I am using a Seagate external HD with a connection through my router. I spent an hour on the phone with seagate and everything is ok on the HD end.
TM sees it and it is mounted but cannot go any further. HELP?!!!!
    Thanks

How should it be connected? It has a usb port and ethernet. The USB on the ExHD looks like the port on the back of my computer, so I would need one wth the same ends? Do they make those?
I can usually fix most my comp problems myself, but this new ExHD has stumped me.
    Thanks for your help.

  • I am getting error message "Disk Not Ejected Properly Eject "FreeAgent GoFlex Drive" before disconnecting or turning it-" randomly.

I'm getting a "Disk Not Ejected Properly  Eject “FreeAgent GoFlex Drive” before disconnecting or turning it…" message at random times.  I have seen other comments about this happening after the iMac wakes from sleep.  However, this is happening to me throughout the day even when I am working on the iMac.
The iMac is up to date with OS X Version 10.9.  I had recently switched from a 500GB to a 3TB Drive, both are Seagate.  I have never had this issue prior to the switch.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
I verified/repaired in the Utility Disk and a message popped up indicating the GoFlex looks "OK".

No, I am not on the USB3 interface.  I contacted Seagate and they indicated that there is no known issue with OS X 10.9.  In my case, they are willing to send me a new Drive, since I just received the GoFlex on 12/06. Will post an update when I install the new one.  Hopefully this will solve my issue.
I suggest you contact Seagate, if you haven't already, directly.  The representatives are very helpful.  Good luck.

  • Time Machine - ambiguous error message, cannot backup

I've been without use of Time Machine for sometime (months) now.  I've been getting the following error:
My backup drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex - 320GB) was a attached to my Airport Extreme, but in desperation I moved it to being directly attached to my MBP.  I've also excluded large number of files from the back up (reduced the full backup size to half the size of the backup disk).  Also, I've erased and reformatted the back up disk - twice.  No errors on it either.
What would be really helpful, was if there was some indication as to WHAT the problem actually is.  This is a rather ambiguous error message, which does little to help a person to troubleshooot.  It seems like the backup is being hung up on a file or files...but I'm just guessing.
Has anybody out there run into this?  If so, what was your solution?

Time Machine Error:  It is unable to back up for about 1 month due to this message :  message says Files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be "read only"  You may need to repair or reformat the disk unsing Disk Utility.  If the disk can't be repaired, you must use a different disk for backups.  Open Time Machine preferences to select a different back up disk

  • HT1338 I have mountain lion and cant get time machine to work. the disk keeps getting ejected.

I just installed Mountain lion and i can't get time machine to work. every time i connect it time machine starts but then ejects the drive. I also tried to back up direct to the hard drive with the software that came with the drive and the same thing happens. Does anyone have a clue as to what may be wrong?

When that happens, you should get some sort of message.  If you don't remember it exactly, go to the Time Machine Preferences window -- there should be a red "Failed" message and icon there.  Click the icon to see the message.  Either report the wording or post a screenshot.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • Time machine won't recognize my WD MyBook Live as a backup drive

I am having an issue with Time Machine not recognizing my 1 TB MyBook Live External Hard drive.  I recently changed internet providers and have a new modem and router (motorolla modem and medialink router) and since then I can't get Time Machine to consistently recognize the backup portion of this hard drive.  Every now and then, not sure why, it will recognize the drive and back it up but won't stay connected all the time.  Most of the time it acts as if there is no backup drive.  I checked to see when the last backup was made and it said it was made a day ago but it was while I was asleep over night.  Not sure why it connected then or how. To get even more odd, it does recognize the drive because I can access all the files on the server portion of the mybook live drive.  For example I have all of my iTunes library on there and run it off the drive and that works fine and recognizes everything.
I have a macbook and I'm running Snow Leopard.  Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

TM apparently identifies the machine's backup by the Computer Name stored in the Sharing preferences. Try opening Sharing preferences and changing the Computer Name to the one you used previously when your TM backup was created.

I am using an iMac running OS 10.6.8. I have Fusion V 3.1.3 installed, where I have a Virtual Machine with Windows 7 Home Edition installed. I also have a HP laptop with same windows 7 installed.
My problem has recently started where on the Virtual machine the IE9 "Smartscreen Filter" reports that both Itunes and Quicktime "Are not commonly downloaded and could affect my computer". Norton 360 reports that the files are safe. IE9 creates a fragment of file in download destination.
There is no problem with the HP laptop.
I have updated the Virtual Machine Win7 with latest updates.
This has recently happening with Apple downloads.

The problem dissappeared, with downloads from Apple site occuring.
