Time Machine configured Mac always requires password

I have a new MacBook air that I set up using Time Machine – fast and simple according to the blurb BUT now every time I want to open or move a file, I have to put my password in. Also, when moving folders, Finder copies them.
The only solution seems to be to change permissions individually for each file, but I have about 5,000... Any ideas?
I've already repaired permissions and updated permissions on master folders.

If you are going to steer clear of Time Machine, here are some cloning programs so you can continue to do a backup.

It is standard Mountain Lion error due to the networking ability which is comparable to wet string. (actually that was lion.. it dried out some with Mountain Lion.. higher in the hills perhaps!!)

But many people are suffering the same issue..
And the above is even a little out of date.. you might need to do a reset to the TC.

  • When using Time Machine in Mac Mail, everything works fine but restored files do not appear in MM - On My Mac, and I cannot find them anywhere.  Thanks

Time Machine Problem: Mac Mail.  Cannot Find Restored Files in Mac Sidebar where they are supposed to go.
I am using Mountain Lion on my MacBook.  I have successfully used Time Machine in the past, but I have incurred the following problem that I am requesting help on.
I am attempting to recover Sent  and Inbox Mac Mail sent.  I go through all the steps properly and locating what I want to recover, and after hitting Restore everything seems to be working and I get a message "Restoring 207 files".  The guides say that then I am supposed to find the files in Mac Mail sidebar under   ON MY MAC.  But they are not there nor anywhere else I have looked.  In other words, everything appears to be working fine except I cannot find the restored files.
    Thank you for you help.
    Jerry

Although you can restore messages from a Time Machine snapshot within the Mail application, it generally won't work with messages that were saved by an older version of Mail. In that case, you have to use an alternative method.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Inside that folder are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use. Decide which ones you want to restore messages from.
Enter Time Machine and scroll back to the snapshot you want. Select the account folders you want and then selectRestore ... to... from the action menu (gear icon) in the toolbar of the snapshot window. Restore the folders to the Desktop, not to their original location.
From the Mail menu bar, select
    File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Import from the mailboxes in the folders you restored to the Desktop. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest. Then delete the folders on the Desktop.

  • Time machine is asking for a password.  What password is it asking for, and where is it?

I'm trying to restore a machine that has ben seriously compromised... I have a disk image, I have backups, I have Time Machine.
Time Machine is asking for a password to restore - there is no password in keychain, no administrator password works, I have no idea what the password to the share is.  I have other machines accessing the share just fine.  My written records say I put it as a stupid password:  guest.  But that doesn't work.  How do I recover this password?
I've tried to recover from the disk image, but Disk Utility says it doesn't have disk space to do so.  I've tried via rsync, and while I seem to have built a computer, it says it cannot find the OS when I attempt to boot.
I'm pretty lost.  Why is Time Machine asking for a password?  Where can I find this password?  Why is it not in Keychain?

Apparently the mybooklive isn't so good about keeping passwords.
    Do:
    Open Safari
    Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks
    Bonjour
    mybooklive
    users
    administrator
    update password
Bizarre solution that I can write to it, retreive it from a working system, but I can't restore from it!  Augh.

This is easy one.. for most.. just restart the TC.. ie pull out the power.. count to 10.. plug in the power.
If the simple doesn't work you can see more info here.

  • Gmail Offline and Time Machine on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

    Hi
I am considering downloading my whole Gmail inbox (7GB) to use as Gmail Offline ...in Firefox, because it doesn't work with Safari - btw, any ideas when and if it will?
But my worry is how Time Machine is going to react to this - will it back up incrementally, or just make 7GB backups every time there's changes?
If I lose my laptop (or if someone steals it) will they be able to hack the Gmail Offline to reveal its contents?
Also, if I lose my external, Time Machine hard-drive, will someone be able to access my Gmail Offline without knowing my password?
Is it encrypted, or just a simple password?
    Thanks!

That depends on how Gmail stores it's data. Some 3rd-party mail apps (such as Entourage and Thunderbird) keep everything in one big file or database. Those are backed-up in full anytime there's the smallest change. AppleMail keeps each message in a separate file, so only the ones that change are backed-up each time.
There are some workarounds. You can exclude the database from normal Time Machine backups, and write an Applescript or Automator workflow to copy the database periodically to a file that's included. Or put a separate partition on your Time Machine drive, and have it copy directly to that. You can run it manually, or use an iCal event to trigger it.

Unless you encrypt them, yes. Most likely, though, anyone who steals either is going to resell it for the value of the hardware, not your emails.
Is it encrypted, or just a simple password?
Time Machine backups are not encrypted, and have the same password requirements as your Mac. The average thief won't be interested, and likely won't know much about Macs (and you can't read Time Machine backups with a PC).
But it's not difficult for someone with Mac expertise to get at either, unless they're encrypted.

  • Error in Time Machine configuration with two usb disks??

    Hi all,
I applied two 1TB usb disks to my Mac Mini with OSX 10.9 server (latest version) and configured them within the Server.app for time machine. As far as I understood, there should only be 1 backup destination 'backups' presented to my mac clients afterwards. But I always see 'backups' and 'backups-1', meaning both usb drives. Did I misunderstand the manual or is there something wrong with my Server.app?
Thank you for your help and best regards, BanditCH

    Hi Wolfgang,
That just won't work. You can get a bigger external drive of 3TB for instance, that will work as one destination.
For this to work with 2 drives: every client needs to choose between two destinations, because both drives appear as a unique destination in TimeMachineServer. There's no way around it.
To be futureproof consider a dedicated NAS with 2 or more disks that supports timemachine so your capacity can grow when there are new bigger drives available. With 2 drives in a RAID mirror inside a NAS you have the best of both worlds. Client backup on a RAID mirror, when one drive fails it does not affect the entire backup. Connected to that NAS you can use an external USB disk for backup. Wonderful
    Goodluck

  • Profile Manager Time Machine Configuration

    Hi all,
all my Mac clients are managed by a Mountain Lion Server with Profile Manager. I want, that all clients are automatically backed up with TimeMachine. On the server the TimeMachine service is started. How can I manage my clients - using the Profile Manager - to use the Server for automatic backups?
On Snow Leopard and Lion I used the Workgroup Manager. Here it was possible to do the TimeMachine configuration for managed clients. How does this work with Mountain Lion?
    Thanks,
    Frank.

Same questions here. Wanting to deploy time machine configs on several macs via the profile manager, so far no success.
    I played around with payloads and all-in-one username / passwords urls. e.g.: afp://b%short_name%:[email protected]:/b%short_name%
On the mac's the profile is deployed but it asks for the username / password straight after login which is exactly what I want to avoid.
Even if username / password is entered correctly, tmutil destinationinfo is showing a wrong configuration like:
    # tmutil destinationinfo
    ====================================================
    Name          : busername
    Kind          : Network
    URL           : afp://username@busername:[email protected]:/busername
    Mount Point   : /Volumes/busername
    ID            : 84CDA90E-9D21-4003-B47E-F27EA210047E
Notice the username@ added after afp:// and before the preset credentials.
If anyone knows a workaround or a better approach, it would probably help some people.
    Thanks

  • Do you have Time Machine in Mac OSX Server 10.6?

    Do you?
How does it work? Does it back up the data every hour, or is is possible to do it more often?

Time Machine is variously incompatible with the creation of backups of the Mac OS X Server box itself; while the basic TM configuration might (does?) work, but the advanced configuration won't work. Well, you'll probably get copies of what was once an "advanced" configuration, but whether you can restore and resume use of those can be problematic at best.
You need take explicit steps to gain consistent and restorable archives of various Mac OS X Server configurations.
Have a look around the forums for existing discussions of (for instance) shutting off dovecot to get a snapshot of the mail store.

  • HT4889 Transferred files via time machine and not log in password will not allow me to log in

I have a new MacBook pro, I transferred files via time machine and a removable hard drive. Now new MacBook does not recognize the log in password. What can I do to reset the password?

Did you migrate when you first booted up in Setup Assistant or did you migrate later? When you migrate later it can create a second account, check in Mac HD/Users to see if this is the situation.

  • Network not always requires password sign on

I'm using a tipowerbook running os10.4.2 w/ 802.11b card and connecting to the internet via an base station & extreme base station (at another location). This problem is occurring at both locations and has not been a problem until I upgraded to tiger.
Basically, sometimes when I turn on my airport card and connect to the base station it asks for a password to connect, other times it doesn't. I thought I had it set up so that it would ask for a password everytime - so I'm a little perplexed.
My concern is whether or not it's possible for others to connect to my base station without a password.
Just for the record its not configured to remember any passwords. I checked that first right away.
    - thanks

Well I was way off. After trouble shooting to find out how I suppossedly corrected the issue I come to find out that both base stations are continuing to allow me to sign into them without a password. My previous post that my (APEBS) AirPort Extreme BaseStation had finally been configured turns out to be incorrect. What I've found out is that both my APEBS & my APBS (AirPort BaseStation) both require a password to sign on after the other has been accessed. But if i access the same BS twice in a row a password is not required. I have 2 base stations at 2 different locations using 2 different internet conections.
As it stands this problem remains open. I've thrown my arms in the air out of complete confusion. I would think this would be a simple pref button to check or uncheck but can't find it.
If i ever figure this out I'll post again to this thread. Until then . . . .

  • Will restoring from time machine restore a removed firmware password?

    Hi all,
I purchased a used Macbook Air a few months ago and recently tried to reset the pram but could not proceed because a firmware password had been set.  The original owner did not remember what he used so I took it into the genius bar and they removed it.  However, part of their work required that they reformat my computer so I was wondering, if I restored my computer using my time machine backup, would that restore the firmware password?
    Thanks in advance.

It won't.  Time Machine doesn't interact with the EFI hardware (the successor to the BIOS, if that helps), which is where Firmware Passwords are set up.

  • Time Machine Hybrid (Mac Windows) possible solutions.ro

Is it possible to create an Hybrid Net with use of Mac (MacBookPro) and PC Windows ?
    Thank you.

Let me get this straight.. You have a network using a Time Capsule.. (never Time Machine which is backup software). and you plugged a 2TB USB hard disk into the TC for media storage.
when I installed my storage device, I formatted in Journalised mode so now I think I have to format my HDD in a format available even for Windows.
No, this is not correct.. I would advise everybody plugging a disk into any Apple router to format it HFS+, ie Mac OS extended Journaled.
Windows does not read the disk directly in a network drive.. nor does the Mac for that matter. Both talk to the OS of the Time Capsule which offers clients disk space using a known network protocol.. nowadays it is always SMB for both Mac and Windows.
A Mac and a PC can store and read files equally well.. but it might not understand a file format.

  • Time Machine three Mac malaise

I've hooked up my mate's MyBookWorld to his Netgear wireless internet connection.
All three Mac laptops in the house (all running Snow Leopard) log-on to MyBookWorld_Backup (using WD_Backup / backup as user name / password), his son's Intel Core Duo 17"backs up using Time Machine, without any bother. However my pal and his wife have two black Intel Core Duo Macbooks both of which log-on and appear to begin the initial backup but fail after a relatively short period of time.
I've attempted to log-off, delete the Time Machine plist file in prefs and log back on but this didn't work and I'm not sure what to try next.
Any assistance or suggestions would be most gratefully received
    Kind Regards

Without some clue as to what failure message(s) it sent, it's rather hard to diagnose.
