Time Machine - Constant Deep Traversals
10.6.8 Partition; Mavs on the other.
Keep getting deep traversals on every TM backup on the SL partition.
I posted a lot more info at Time Machine - Deep Traversal Issues - Please Help but that is stale now; and maybe this will give someone a clue as to how to help me.
Here's Time Machine Buddy:

I've done every trick Pondini's site suggests plus more; even wiped the external clean; run Disk Warrior on everything ...
I get this running Time Tracker:
Those yellow triangles - could they be the culprit?
If so - what do I do to fix?
Something is clearly wrong, and the backup is hung. You might as well cancel it. If it doesn't stop after a while, use the +Activity Monitor+ app (in your Applications/Utilities folder), to force-quit the backupd process.
Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Copy and post them here; they may contain a clue. Also post the details of your setup, especially the destination for your backups.
Also, try all the things that apply in #D2 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

Time machine constant preparing
My Time Machine has been preparing for backup for several hours. It is an external drive that I only connect once a week for backup. It has always gone smoothly before. The drive shows up on the desktop, and I can open it. Any ideas?
If you haven't already I'd recommend book marking and studying Pondini's Time Machine FAQs and Time Machine Troubleshooting
In D1 of the Troubleshooting guide he referrs to your issue. -
Had a data drive failure, replaced it. Restored just that volume's data from TM to the new drive via "cp -a". For some reason just that drive (DATA) forces a full scan at every TM backup. Have also upgraded to 10.8.1 to see it that would fix things, but no.
from .Backup.log:

Mind you at this point, I've excluded all of the contents of DATA from actually being backed up (the 61 items is a separate bug in backupd where it reports file counts incrementally instead of per volume), it was doing a FULL copy every time, regardless of what actually changed.
From everything I've been able to read/find/fiddle with, the part that doesn't make sense is the the "require scan" on the "Deep event" line above. Other people have had problems with full scans, but it's usually something about 'no fsevents db' or "fsevents reset".. this one feels like a setting somewhere telling it to do a full scan, and that's where I'm lost.
The only thing I haven't done yet is fully reset the TM machine drive.. I'll do it, but in theory there should be a reason that will fix this. I.e. a setting on there I could fix instead. I'm not a big fan of reboot/reinstall/... method of fixing things, it just hides the problem instead of solving it.
And to make this into a question.. how do I fix "Data" to be more like my "Video" drive :
Running preflight for "Video" (mount: '/Volumes/Video' fsUUID: A34192F9-20D3-3CCD-B80D-D55FC4EF34DC eventDBUUID: 2BD9CE6F-CCC5-456C-B1E4-26111ADAF2BE)

Thoughts?when this one went off, I wasn't even home. only safari, console, terminal and finder running. though there is a cp running to copy things off of the Data drive to an external usb for safety's sake.

Forcing a "deep search" Time Machine backup (to catch all changes)
Time Machine normally depends upon the new, Leopard, file system event logs to know what to include in an incremental backup. But if there is a problem with a backup due to file system corruption or whatever, Time Machine may miss some files AND NOT CATCH THEM LATER when the subsequent backups happen, apparently because they are no longer marked as having been changed since the last backup.
If you have removed a corrupted file/directory or otherwise want to make sure Time Machine really does catch everything, you could of course erase the Time Machine disk and have it start over.
OR you could force a "deep search" backup. A deep search backup happens whenever Time Machine decides the file system event log can not be trusted. In that case Time Machine digs through the entire source file system to decide what to include in the next incremental backup. You will know this is happening because the "preparing" phase takes a long time (perhaps 20 minutes or so) even though the amount of data eventually backed up is not that big. The time of the preparing phase will probably be comparable to the time to do a Repair Permissions pass in Disk Utility. There is also a message added to the Console by the "backupd" process indicating it is also going "deep".
Well it turns out that one of the easiest ways to make Time Machine decide not to trust the file system event log is to boot from the Leopard install DVD. Apparently the event log is marked as non-trustable since a source external to the file system (the software running from the install DVD) may have altered it.
So boot from the install DVD and then immediately Restart from your main hard drive. The next incremental backup Time Machine does will be a "deep search" backup.

Thanks, this was very useful information to me this evening! I was puzzled that the TM backup of my daughter's MacBook was missing several changed files. I tried your "DVD trick", and it solved the problems!
Now the question is why Time Machine didn't understand that it should have done a deep traversal? It seems it has logged its own bug: The log says: "Avoided deep traversal due to exclusion list change". Indeed, I did change the exclusion list, as I wanted to add a portable external drive. I guess I should report this bug to Apple... -
USB drive randomly disconnects (and causes deep traversal in Time Machine)
I have two external drives connected through a USB hub and they get sometimes randomly disconnected. Sometimes when I plug the drives in, only one appears on the desktop. Then I unplug them, plug them back in and just the other drive appears.
The other problem is that I back up one of the drives to the other using Time Machine and when the drive disappears by itself, Time Machine needs to perform deep traversal of the whole drive AND backs up the whole drive from scratch (see the console log below).
Any suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks,
Peter

Force Time Machine to perform a deep traversal?
How do I force Time Machine to perform a deep traversal? I've had this happen when I needed to once before, when it took about 120 minutes to go through 500 GB and Time Machine found about 10 GB worth of data that changed, which was exactly what I wanted at the time.
Now however, I'd like to do this again, but I can't seem to do it. I've tried resetting TM by trashing com.apple.timemachine.plist, booting from my Snow Leopard startup disk (even though I'm running Mountain Lion), and probably other things that I can't think of right now (I've been spending hours on this problem so far).
When I try to perform a backup, TM wants to backup my entire drive, which is about 500 GB, when I know that not everything has changed. I can even use TM to explore folders and go backwards in time and see that many folders have not changed in a while. So, I'd like to force TM to re-index my entire drive so that it picks up only the small changes rather than decides to back up everything.
Perhaps, is there a way to purge the File System Event Store, where Time Machine goes to see what has changed recently? I assume that currently it probably lists that everything has changed, perhaps due to something I did while trying to fix this problem over the past few days.Time Machine uses the modification times of folders to determine whether their contents need to be scanned for changes made since the time of the last snapshot. For some reason, that criterion occasionally fails, and TM doesn’t scan folders with contents that have changed. You may be able to get backups to resume by updating the modification times of all your folders.
Important: This procedure will change the modification times of all folders on the startup volume. It won’t affect anything that’s not a folder, and it won’t change your existing backups at all. If you have a reason to want to keep the modification times of folders as they are, STOP.
Before proceeding, you must have a current backup of all data. Since your existing Time Machine backups may not be current, you’ll have to back up in some other way; for example, by starting a new TM backup set on another external drive. It’s a good idea to do this anyway, as you always need more than one backup, even if everything is working perfectly.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy it — do not type — into the Terminal window:
sudo find / -xdev -type d -exec touch {} \;
Press return. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
The command may take several minutes to run. When a line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) appears below what you entered, quit Terminal.
The next snapshot will take longer than usual, because all folders will be scanned for changes. When it’s complete, check the results to see how much data has been backed up.
This procedure will only affect the backups of your startup volume. If you back up other source volumes with Time Machine and are having the same problem with those, you’ll need to take additional steps. -
Recently upgraded to mountain lion in order to buy the new tall tower for time machine backups. had to get technical support to help with set up as it wouldn't play ball with two computers. all working fine up until last week when the iMac started getting backup error messages. then system restarts independently when using time machine on the time machine wireless network. only stops restarting when I switch the wireless network back to he bt one, which is a pain obviously as can't back up to time machine then. it has to be a problem with airport utility or something wireless but all says all up to date with software etc. all still works fine backing up from laptop on the wireless network, just the iMac is not happy. any help or thoughts very much appreciated.
Hi, many thanks Bob, what you say is not unthinkable at all, although it does answer the question
"what could I do *instead* of ..." rather than the one I actually asked, but seriously ...
Shutting down might be an answer, although it would clear out my tmp directory - which I might not want to have to sort through looking for things I want to save every time I go to work, and also, now that nvram doesn't seem to work for disabling the boot chime, it can get a bit embarassing booting up in a busy meeting if I have forgotten to mute before I shut down. There are all sorts of other issues, such as editing documents, loading web pages and so on that I would have to set up again.
Your suggestion of letting Apple know is a good one - thank you for the link.
Take care,
Mark -
Time machine will not keep a constant backup...
Time will start a new complete backup every week or two. No long term back up...
This is the message I get;
"Time machine completed a verification of your backup on "GoFlexHome". To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you"
Does anyone have any idea why....?Start with C13 in the 1st linked article.

Time Machine Troubleshooting Problems -
Mac enters a deep sleep during Time Machine full restore
I have the problem listed in the subject. Here is my configuration:
Mac Pro (early 2008), dual quad-core Xenon 2.8 GHz, 10 GBs of RAM, hard disks as follows:
Bay 1: 1 TB HD System, running OS X 10.6.2, ~500 gigs used, ~400 gigs free, small Bootcamp partition
Bay 2: 1.5 TB hard disk, used exclusively for backing up the drive in Bay 1
Bay 3: 1 TB spare drive, currently contains only OS X 10.6.2 plus some utilities. This drive is not backed up.
Bay 4: empty
OK, so now for what happened. Recently, I had an issue with my main drive (bay 1); rather than attempt to fix it, I decided to reformat the drive and restore from a Time Machine backup. I booted off the Snow Leopard DVD, chose the Restore option from the Utilities menu, and started the restore.
When I returned to the Mac after a couple of hours to see how things were going, the Mac was asleep and could not be woken up by moving the mouse, clicking its buttons, or hitting any key on the keyboard. The (wired) keyboard was totally inactive (no caps lock light, etc.). Pressing the Power button on the Mac Pro didn't do anything, nor could I connect to it from my MacBook Pro by means of screen or file sharing. The only thing I could do was to hold the power button in until the machine turned off completely. Restarting from the DVD worked fine.
I looked for answers on the web, and I found a couple of posts here. One of them suggested setting the sleep parameter to "Never" (if one still had a boot partition); I did that by booting from the disk in bay 3, not quite believing it would work since I was booting from the DVD to do the restore.
Once booted from the DVD, I tried the other answer I had found, and that is executing the command "pmset sleep 0" in the terminal before launching the restore. I got an error to the effect that the write operation failed (duh!), but I thought that maybe the parameter would be held in memory. I started the restore operation again and went to sleep.
Needless to say, the same thing happened again. The only way I was finally able to perform the restore was by sitting next to the machine and moving the mouse every few minutes to keep the system awake. This process took a little over two and a half hours (which is not bad considering the amount of data involved). The operation was successful, and I was able to boot from the restored drive. Everything is now back to normal. However, I am puzzled by the apparent necessity to babysit the Mac while it is restoring from a Time Machine backup.
This clearly did NOT happen with the Leopard (10.5) DVD. I suspect (but don't know for sure) that the 10.5 DVD's system included a never sleep setting that Apple forgot to include on the 10.6 DVD.
Is anybody able to perform lengthy restores by booting from the Snow Leopard DVD? If so, how do they get around the sleep issue? Or doesn't it happen in the first place? I would also like to know what state my Mac is in when it stops in the middle of a restore operation; it is clearly not a normal sleep mode since I haven't actually found any way of waking it up.
Finally, I would love to be able to boot from my Bay 3 drive and launch a system restore operation from there since both the Time Machine drive and the target drive would be available. Is there any way at all that this can be done? Has anyone succeeded in using the Time Machine full restore from any location other than the OS DVD? This would obviously be interesting since one could continue to use the Mac while the restore operation is ongoing.
Thanks for any info anyone can provide.
Danielsomething is wrong with your system. changing energy saver settings while booted normally from an external should have taken care of this issue. I suggest you reset SMC
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
and you are right, using "pmset sleep 0" from terminal while booted from the DVD does not work. I think it was me who recommended that. that was very dumb of me. thanks for pointing that out. but it should not be necessary as i mentioned.
all that said, in response to your last question yes it is perfectly possible to run the installer and the restore utility while booted normally from another drive. beeing quite impatient (and having a mac pro with several internal bays ) this is the only way I ever install or restore. also, I don't use the DVD itself. I made a small partition on one of my internals and cloned the SL install DVD to that. it works much quicker from there.
anyway, to start the installer while booted normally from another drive run the following terminal command
sudo /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/CDIS/Mac OS X Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Mac OS X Installer
this will let you use the mac and do other things while the restore is going on. -
Constant errors from Time Machine with error code 36 and 8062
Hi chaps,
I have trawled the internet and spent a huge amount of time on this problem and can't seem to fix it.
This is the first backup on to a brand new external USB hard disk, formatted correctly.
It starts the backup fine and then stops and a random point normally before 5GB with the same error every time but on different files.
First it was failing on garageband so I excluded that, then it failed on a strange pdf that I can't find in User Templates which I excluded with no joy.
I've turned off spotlight for the external disk and tried several different formats, again with no success.
It first errors with 36 and then after 8062
Can any suggest what is going on please?Japtastic wrote:

Are you certain? That's the most common cause of initial backups failing on a new disk (since most new disks come set up for Windoze), and has exactly your symptoms. See #C1 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, and/or this Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550?viewlocale=en_US

Are you getting the messages shown in #C3 of the Troubleshooting Tip?
If so, do the things in the pink box there. -
Lost the ability to Spotlight Index my Time Machine drive
I have an external, Firewire Time Machine drive which has been working without problems up to now. This evening I had a backup which hung up in the "preparing" stage (no file transfers begun yet). When I went to look in the console, there was a device error apparently related to trying to detect the powered-on state of my Time Machine drive. Apparently Time Machine did not handle this gracefully. In the course of trying to clear that I got into a state where I had to force shutdown of the system (holding the power button). (I accidentally clicked on the Time Machine icon which got hung up trying to display the histories, and left me with no access to the Desktop....)
Things appeared to check out fine when I brought the machine back up (including Verify Disk of both the main and Time Machine drives and Repair Permissions of the main drive), and I finally did a Back Up Now in Time Machine. Due to the forced shut down, this became a "Deep Traversal" "preparing"stage. We'll I've seen those before, so no worries. However it lasted quite a bit longer than it should, at which point I noticed that Spotlight was indexing the Time Machine drive.
So at this point I dragged the Time Machine into the Spotlight Privacy list. Rather than going away completely as I expected, the indexing of the Time Machine drive apparently went into some sort of clean-up phase that said it was still indexing for another 5 minutes (where it had, just prior, said it was going to be indexing for another 2 hours). The progress bar advanced normally as if it really did do 5 minutes more of indexing of the Time Machine drive. I've not seen this before
When that finished, the backup which had been "preparing" during all of this also finished "preparing", transferred the several MB of files I expected, and finished normally. There were no errors in the console related to any of this.
I rebooted, and once again did a pair of Disk Verifies and a Repair Permissions without problems. Opened up the console to track things, and poked around in the Time Machine. All was normal as far as I can tell. I also explored the Time Machine drive via the Finder. No problems.
So I now went into Spotlight Privacy and removed the Time Machine drive from the privacy list expecting it to do the re-indexing I had stopped above. Spotlight started indexing the drive and a couple seconds later it stopped. I tried again -- into and out of privacy -- same result, a couple seconds of indexing and then it stopped.
At this point I noticed the console was saying I had some bus errors in the I/O system, and that's what was terminating the md worker process and stopping the indexing.
So I shut down, unplugged the Time Machine drive, and went through my maintenance ritual.
I reset the PMU (this is a powerbook), reset PRAM, booted once in Safe Mode, booted normally, and ran Disk Utility again to Verify and Repair Permissions on the main hard drive. All of that went without a hitch. No failures, faults or funnies.
I ran through the list of Applications I use, keeping an eye on the console. Again no problems.
So I shut down, plugged the Time Machine drive back in and booted back up. I put the drive into Spotlight Privacy and turned off Time Machine backups. I then did a Verify Disk on that drive. No problems. I went into the Time Machine history display. No problems. And no problems looking at it in the Finder either. In particular, no bus errors or anything else funny in the console.
I rebooted and did a new Back Up Now. It completed without problems. It was another Deep Traversal backup due to the Safe Mode Boot, but it went without a hitch. I rebooted and did another Back Up Now and got a normal speed incremental backup again without a hitch. The bottom line is that as far as I can see that Time Machine drive is working just fine.
So I went into Spotlight Privacy and removed it from the list. Once again it started to index and stopped in a couple seconds. But this time there were NO Console error messages.
I moved my main hard drive into Spotlight Privacy and removed it and it re-indexed from scratch just fine. Tried again with the Time Machine drive -- indexing stopped in a couple of seconds with no message in the Console. Spotlight searches find all the right stuff in the main drive. Spotlight and finder searches find only the top level Time Machine folders in the Time Machine drive.
I also tried removing the Spotlight plist from my account's Library / Preferences. Spotlight created a new plist as expected but it still won't index that darned Time Machine drive.
Apparently there is something left over from when I originally aborted the Spotlight indexing of that drive which is causing Spotlight to think it has no work to do. I'm not seeing any I/O errors of any sort any more (I think my maintenance pass took care of that) and Time Machine backups and history access continue to work just fine. And again, the Time Machine disk Verifies just fine.
So I've run out of things to try.
Is there a hidden file that I need to remove from that drive so that Spotlight no longer thinks it already has it indexed?
--BobWell unfortunately the command
sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/MyDiskName
didn't help.
The command itself echoed the name of the volume and then said "Indexing Enabled", which looked good. But the Spotlight indexing stopped after a couple seconds. The Console reported the Terminal sudo command and nothing else.
I tried moving the Time Machine drive in and out of Spotlight privacy and once again the indexing started and stopped a couple seconds later with no Console messages.
I then tried another trick I've learned to make Spotlight indexing happen which is to do a Finder search for, say, all folders (limited to the one drive) via Command-f and while Including both System Files and files both Visible and Invisible. And indeed Spotlight indexing started but again stopped a few seconds later.
However, this time there were console messages and a crash report.
The Console shows (with personal information x'ed out):

Apparently the mdutil command didn't actually delete the Spotlight index file which is causing the problem, or at least didn't leave the indexing files in a consistent, empty state to start indexing over again. I may have to Erase this Time Machine disk and start over.
I should point out that except for Spotlight indexing this disk is otherwise working just fine. It passes Verify Disk with no errors and both new Time Machine backups and viewing and restoring via Time Machine and Finder work without problem.
Any suggestions before I just Erase the disk and start over with a new backup?

Time machine keeps preparing backup..
Hi, my Time Machine linked to a 1TB Time Capsule keeps preparing the backup but no backups are done.
I had a look at the 'backupd' in the console messages and here is what i have:
26/07/2009 22:11:13 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[214] Disk image /Volumes/Data/The MacBook_0023df8ceb34.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Backup of The MacBook
26/07/2009 22:11:48 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[214] Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
26/07/2009 22:11:51 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[214] Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|
Anyone could translate this for me?
Thanks,
S.Hi thezedhongkong,
My understanding of the "node requires deep traversal" is one of a few things:
The "backupd" process has lost track of what's contained in your backup and how much has changed since the last backup. As a result it needs to verify the integrity of the sparsebundle image, unpack it, check each file against what's on your machine currently and then run the backup again.
Every file has a "flag" that the backupd file is looking for when it scans the drive. If the flag is "on" then that means the file has changed since the last backup. If the flag is "off" then that means the file has not changed since the last backup.
Flag On - Backup
Flag Off - Don't backup
It's why Apple recommends against backing up large database files. Because if one piece of information is changed the entire database file will need to be backed up every single time. Entourage and Aperture are common offenders of this issue, iPhoto is not because it's a package (a gloried zip archive).
Based on how large the sparsebundle is, I've seen deep traversals take as little as 1 hour to as long as 8 hours (I had a 178GB image). Unfortunately, if you stop/cancel/quit the process it has to start over again each time. So you pretty much just need to let it sit and do its thing, even if that means overnight.
Now my understanding of the entire process could be totally wrong, so someone please correct me if that's the case. -
Frequent deep traversals on MBP: how to avoid?
I'm happily using Time Machine on my MacBook Pro with an external FireWire drive. The FireWire drive stays at home, and I plug the laptop into it when I can. (Not an ideal situation, I agree, but it was cheaper to use an existing FW drive than it was to purchase Time Capsule or a similar solution.) Sometimes I'll go for a couple of days between backups, but I usually run 2 or 3 a day.
Backups will often take a very long time to complete (~30 min, instead of ~3 min). When I look at the logs in Console.app, I see something like
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
Node requires deep traversal:/reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUn trustable|
When this happens, the backup takes about 10x as long, with heavy disk activity from both internal and external drives the entire time, but it does complete successfully. The next few backups take the standard ~3min, but I get one of these deep traversals 2 or 3 times a week. I can't be too precise about when these happen, unfortunately, but I think they're more common when I run the first backup after a couple of days away from the drive. Unlike some posts I've seen elsewhere on this forum, I don't think it's related to large changes to the filesystem (like upgrades from 10.5.3 to 10.5.4).
None of this happens on the other two computers I use TimeMachine with (PowerMac G5, Mac Pro), each of which also backs up to a FireWire external drive. Aside from the fact that the MBP isn't always plugged into the drive, I haven't changed any hardware. (Well, I did just have the keyboard and top case replaced, but the Time Machine problems were happening before that.)
As I say, the backup completes successfully after this deep traversal, so I'm not worried about losing data. But it would be nice to figure out why the database is untrustable so often, and, ideally, to fix it. This happens often enough that I'm a little worried about the physical wear and tear on the hard drives.
Does anyone know what might be triggering this, and how to fix the underlying problem?
Thanks!BobP1776 wrote:
Normally Time Machine uses a log of file system activities to identify the portions of the disc that may have changed and thus need to be included in the next incremental backup.
If Time Machine decides that log might not be trustworthy, it does a Deep Traversal where it looks through the entire file system to find all the stuff that has changed. The result is a long "Preparing" phase followed, usually, by a typically short backup itself, since the backup is still incremental.
Yes, that's exactly what I'm seeing.
There are a number of events that will cause Time Machine to mistrust the log file, but they basically boil down to cases where the disc MIGHT have been altered by some means other than the normal operation of your Mac OS X.
Typical things that will cause this are:
1) A major system install such as 10.5.4 itself.
2) Booting in Safe Mode
3) Booting from the Leopard install DVD
4) Booting your machine in Firewire Target mode
I haven't done any of these in quite a while, and I've certainly seen the deep traversals multiple times since the 10.5.4 update.
5) Improper shutdown of the computer -- i.e., crashes, or forcing the computer to power down before it has completed a normal shutdown.
Hm -- this might be it. I've had to force power-downs on this machine more often than I'd like. I'll have to look into a possible connection between forced shutdowns and deep traversals. Thanks!
On the other hand, normal operation of the laptop for several days between attaching the Time Machine drive should NOT cause the log file to be discarded.
Yeah, that's what I thought.
Thanks for the info! -
