Time machine copying a lot

Time Machine is saving 1-2GB or so of files each time it runs, every hour, and slowing everything down. It happens on both my imac and macbook pro with different external hard drives both with maverick. Is anyone else having this issue or know what might be behind it?

Personally, I do not think that it's taking so long because JBuilder's debugger
I think it's something with the WLS 6.0 (SP1), it is not due JVM neither since
I have WLS 5.1 in the same box and running with the same JVM...and, I agree, it
just take a minute or so

Startup time for 4.5.1 & 5.1 when using Kawa was only a minute or so
on the

I think there might be information there on how to reset Time Machine to do a full backup. I think you basically have to reset it and start over.

Does Time Machine Copy UNCHANGED files over and over??

Okay, it seems to me that whatever files I have selected for backup are copied by Time Machine EVERY SINGLE TIME it backs up my Mac, instead of just when I make changes to them. Is that correct? If so, that just seems to be a massive waste of space on the external hard drive, and is probably the reason my 1TB drive runs out of space so quickly.
For example, I don't need 50 copies of my iTunes Library. I just need ONE copy. Time Machine should back up the music files ONCE, and if I add more songs to iTunes, it should then detect it and backup JUST the new files. Same thing with a Word document or whatever...make ONE copy of the file and then if I ALTER the file, make a copy of the ALTERED FILE.
Am I making sense here or is this just wishful thinking? Is there a way to make these types of adjustments in settings that I am missing?

no, that's wrong. that would indeed be a huge waste of space. TM only backs up afresh new and changed files since the last backup. everything else is *hard linked* to existing backup copies. read up on what a hard link is.

that's why incremental backups take very little space and yet every single TM backup is a full and completely independent copy of your system at the backup time. and that's why you can have a lot of TM backups fit on your backup drive.

Time Machine Copying files

I have been using time machine for around 12 months and have a 4TB external drive with a lot of work on it.
My question is, i am due to upgrade my machine in the next few days and i only want some of the data within time machine, is it possible to copy certain files and folders to a new machine from an old time machine?

Of course. When you set up your new Mac, you will be asked to restore a backup if you have got one. During this process, you will be able to choose what files you want to restore by folders, so you will not have any problem.

Time Machine Copied Files

I'm trying to restore time machine backup files that I copied from one hard drive to another. After reading some posts it looks like I might have made a mistake in thinking I could just drag and drop the files. I have the files all starting with cpbfxxxxxxxxxxx. I would like to put them back into time machine but that doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
If you copied files from one disk to another, they should still exist on the first disk, unless you deleted them.
Please clarify what you did or want to do: did you copy from your backups to a different disk? Or from one disk to another?
What is your setup: what drives are being backed-up to where?

Time Machine copy failed with error:28

Usually I just say OK when Time Machine can't complete a backup in either my computer or my wife's, and a couple of months later I get the irritating message again.

If I recall correctly you do this by going on to TM and using one of the
pull down menus in the top apple menu strip ....
I myself am having problems with TM. I erased the external target disk and
started TM again. However it stops wverytime and refuses to backup ..
Telling me there isn't enough room even though the ext space is much
bigger. It also quotes the size of my HD content about 20% bigger than
finder says weird.

Repair Permissions is not relevant for Time Machine backups. It only
repairs permissions on files installed by the OS X Installer application
(or the OS installation or preinstalled OS, or Software Update). TM
backups don't qualify.
In any case, Time Machine deletes old backups using root privileges so
it doesn't care about permissions on the backup drive.

Something odd is happening here. Given your described usage, you should
not be chewing through 1 TB of backups in less than three months. I've
gone more than a year on a drive with a similar ratio and not filled it
(and I am backing up my downloads, sometimes two or three times as I
move them to other folders).
Has anything major been done to the computer within that timeframe, e.g.
installing a new hard drive, or erasing the main drive and restoring
from backup? If so, that drive is treated as a new one and would require
another full backup, leaving the old one there.
A similar possibility is if Time Machine thought the computer had been
replaced, which would result in a new backup being started, and would
also leave the old backup unable to be deleted automatically.
In this case, you wouldn't be able to directly access the backups prior
to the change using "Enter Time Machine", but could get to them by
holding down the Option key and choosing "Browse Other Backup Disks"
from the Time Machine menu.

Which OS X version are you running?
Have a look in system.log (using Console) to see if Time Machine logged
any relevant information when the backup failed. Look for references to
"backupd" (which is the background software which does Time Machine
backups).

When you open Finder and then from the Time Machine Icon in the menu bar hold the option key and Browse Other Backup Disks. then ⇧⌘G, then ~/Library/Mail/V2, you're not seeing the folder with your old emails? (don't open TM from Mail)
If you see your old mail, then this may be a long-way, but....
BACKUP your current email
Log into the Guest Account (->System Preferences->Users & Groups)
Open Finder, then from the Time Machine Icon in the menu bar hold the option key and Browse Other Backup Disks. then ⇧⌘G, then ~/Library/Mail/V2 and restore the V2 Folder
Now start Mail and set up your accounts (all your emails from the TM should be restored)
You can then Mail->Mailbox->Export Mailbox and save to your Desktop (do this with each Mailbox)
Copy these exported mailboxes to a USB drive
Log into your regular account.
Open Mail and File->Import Mailboxes.

Are your files on a local disk or a Time Capsule? I was able to use a Finder drag-and-drop to copy "sparsebundle" files from one Time Capsule to another, although I had to copy them to an intermediate device and then to the final destination.
If your Time Machine files are on a directly-attached disk, you might be able to copy then with the utility SuperDuper! (exclamation point part of the name):

Time machine copied my old files over new ones.

Sometimes the Macbook Pro would't load the desktop. Other times it won't load the password window. The backup drive booted up. I ran Norton anti-virus but found nothing.
The disc utility found the disc OK. But repairing permissions won't run. DiskWarrior gave the dreaded error 9972, which means any I one of 10 things could be wrong.
I noticed the Chrome icon had changed to blue, the color when Chrome first came out. Time machine had "updated" my files and apps back to 2009. What the ****. Have I lost all my work since I last backed up my disc in 2009? I had DiskWarrior rebuild the directory. But the disc still won't boot.

That's well-known to wreak havoc on OSX. It may well be the cause of your problems. Uninstall it immediately. You may need help to do that, as it's also notoriously hard to get rid of all the bits it leaves behind.
Search this forum for Norton and you'll see what I mean, and find a link to an uninstaller.

Time Machine Copying all files again after a restore

i recently achieved a successful restore of my computer and now i am wishing to back up my computer again (after installing bootcamp) but time machine keeps trying to backup all my files
my computers name is still the same and when i force a backup the inprocess icon comes up in my external drive(where it should be) but then says there isnt enough space. it also seems to want to back more information then i have on my original hard drive?it also deleted my earlier backups without consent

I would imagine that reformatting the hard drive would remove the event logs that Time Machine uses to determine what has changed since the last backup and so it would be likely to fully backup from scratch. You should be able to view previous backups using the Browse Other Time Machine Volumes menu item in Time Machine given that your computer name is unchanged.

Time Machine- Copied files INSIDE the Sparsebundle into trash-HELP!

Long story short-Time Machine was giving an error when attempting to back up. I was on a rampage and threw the files IN my Time Machine disk image into the trash (an immediate "oh crap" moment). It took seconds to get the files into the trash but trying to get the files OUT and back into the folder they belong in is taking HOURS! Is there a way to QUICKLY get the files out of the trash. Some magical unix way?

there is no magic fix and in fact, i don't think what you are doing will work. time machine files should not be trashed from finder. if you have to delete something do it from TM interface. start TM sroll back and select the item you want to trash click on "gears" action button in finder's toolbar. you'll have options to delete an entire backup for that time point or all backups of the selected items.

Time Machine backing up lots of data when computer is idle for hours

Is there anyway to see what exactly Time Machine is backing up? No new apps installed, only iTunes (sometimes), Safari and Mail running, no new mail and/or nothing with attachments. Not syncing iPhones or buying music. Whether I'm surfing around or or just have my MBP on and doing something else when Time Machine runs every hour it'll be backing up anywhere from 1-2Mb (acceptable) to 600Mb of data and everywhere in between. What files are changing that much/often? This has been happening for several weeks, not sure exactly when it started because I usually just let Time Machine do its thing and don't check every time to see how much its backing up.

also, are you using any virtualization software, Entourage or any other programs that use large database files? those database files are treated like single files by TM and any time you make any change to any of them TM backs them up afresh.

IPhoto will not let me retrieve from a Time Machine copy

I am trying to retrieve an iPhoto file from a week ago.
One week ago I attempted to upgrade to Lion, then realized that was not what I wanted to do and rebooted from my clone to restore to Snow Leopard.
When I opened iPhoto however, I realized that the iPhoto library was way further back than I had remembered.
I used my Time Machine backup to get my old iPhoto library back (not to try to merge, just to retreive the file) and I get the error message: "This operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access "iPhoto Library."
I already repaired permissions on the volume. What gives?

The problem is that I'm trying to retrieve it from the Time Machine and it wont even complete that action.
It starts the download... and then 2 gigs in.... if stops and the dialog pops up.
Do you mean to rebuild the library in the Time Machine level?
I didn't know that was possible and didn't want to try unless I knew for sure it would not screw things up.

First of all, an overview:
Macbook Pro 13. HDD: 650 GB. Latest Snow Leopard. Mac experience: Some.
I'm trying to make a copy of my computer using Time Machine. I've been doing this before when I had my standard HDD, and it worked excellent. Since I bought a new HDD, I thought that I should make a new Time Machine copy. I've installed Windows 7 using Boot Camp, which got about 100 GB of the Harddrive. OSX got 550 GB (489 GB used). My external harddrive's space is just 500 GB.
When I tried to make a copy, it says that the external harddrive got too little space remaining, which is true if Time Machine also copy my Windows 7. (Another partition).
My question is, if I buy a new external HDD which got more than 650 GB space, will I be able to make a Time Machine copy of both my OSX and W7, and if my computer crashes in the future, will I just be able to plug the external harddrive in, and install the copy and it all looks like now? I know that OSX will, but will W7 also do it?
If the answer is not, how can I make that the Time Machine don't choose to copy the Windows partition? I can't do as I normal do.. Because you can't click on the partition and omit it. (please answer this question even if the answer is yes.)
Summary:
If I use Time Machine, will it also copy Windows 7 exaclly as it is right now? How can I uncheck to copy the windows partition?

Time Machine does not back up Boot Camp partitions. You'll need to use Windows backup software to make a separate backup for that.
As a general rule, your Time Machine drive should be at least twice the size of the partitions that you want to back up. Your external drive is smaller than the 550 GB that you've assigned to your OS X partition, so Time Machine is refusing to use it.
Try to find an external drive that's at least 1.5 TB.
