Time machine couldn't back up seagate backup plus, Not Detected...

I just bought the Seagate backup plus in December when my overly fragile macbook air screen cracked & I had to have it repaired...Anyway, of course I wanted a backup before sending it for repair.
I had nothing but trouble setting it up & getting it to make a backup, right out of the box & had to email, then call tech support.  It had been working fine, until I updated whatever the latest version of Maverick's or whatever update came out.  It has not backed up since April 16th.  The light comes on for the backup plus.  I googled & found something about firmware, so I went through that download process & it said the backup plus was up to date.  I plug it into the USB & still nothing.  It's just an error message saying "Backup delayed", then I click on Back Up Now & get an error saying Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Seagate Backup Plus Drive".  The backup disk could not be found.  Make sure the backup disk is connected or select a different backup disk.  How wonderful.  I also went to the Seagate website and found a troubleshooting guide, which was also worthless.  The only thing it said was that it might be set to "sleep" and going through all this firmware and disconnecting and re-connecting and rebooting was supposed to fix this issue.  I am so frustrated now, I can't even stand it.  It is Finals week, I am in the Nursing program, which believe me is not an easy curriculum & now this!  god forbid my life ever be without frustration and challenges, I feel like I am never ever going to be happy or have a good life, something is always wrong, I hate technology, I spend hours and hours and hours trying to figure things out, & then they just get messed up with an update and never work the same again.

It had been working fine, until I updated whatever the latest version of Maverick's or whatever update came out.
Yes, know the issue.  Did you EVER install any (utterly worthless) hard drive control software that came bundled with that ext. USB hard drive?
OR especially software from a Western Digital drive?
If so youve got a serious issue of data loss (which is why you NEVER ever have a single external backup of data).
You can read all about it here on the last 20 pages:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475136?start=1365&tstart=0
If you installed (which you should NEVER do) any HD control software, then youve got a serious issue where all your metadata is lost
Metadata is the data about the data on the HD, meaning not total loss, but almost the same as.
Run Etrecheck and post the results:
use this FREE little test APP to verify (most people here use it for diagnostics)

OS is important.. What OS is on Mac and what is on the working macbook?
Was the Airport setup from the Macbook? That might be why it works from there..
Does the AE show up in Mac airport utility?
Can you mount the disk in finder and copy files to it/from it??
Did you try a TM reset after mounting in Finder.. so you know it is available?
What about a network reboot.. does it work post a restart for a few minutes/hours/days???

  • Time machine: Couldn't Back Up. Spareholder.

Ok, I just bought my macbook air, and i have a mac mini and a other macbook. I've never had the problem where i couldnt back up. I backed up my macbook air the instant i got it out of the box. After this i couldn't back up again. I went into airport and and conneted to my time capsule, entered the password and it still didnt work. I do backup now, it looks for the time capsule, and couldn't find it giving me a error, Time Machine couldnt complete the backup...spareholder. This has never happened. No other mac was doing a backup, I tryed andother mac and it worked fine. Do any of you have past expirence with this problem?
    Thanks, JP

Try just rebooting the Time Capsule.
Or restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. TC.. devices.
Mountain Lion has connection issues with the TC disk.. no solution yet.
Much worse over wireless than wired connection..
You may be worth paying for the USB ethernet cable.. which is cheap .. thunderbolt to ethernet much faster but much more expensive.
I would also redo the setup of the TC..
Use all SMB names.. short no spaces pure alphanumeric for everything.
Set a different name for 5ghz wireless and force the air to use 5ghz if close by.
Use the manually set radio channels to swap flopping around.
None of this cures the issue but might slow down the interval between required reboots.

Open your Applications folder and click on the "Utilities" icon>click on "Disk Utility".  Go into Disk Utility, highlight the external hard drive you are going to use for Time Machine backups in the left hand column by clicking on it and select the "Erase" tab, up and over to the right.  Then select the Format, below, that will be installed, as "Mac OS Extended (Journeled)".  THEN, OK the erasure.  That should clear things up.
    Hope this helps
Of course this will erase all previous backups.

  • Using Time Machine on a network disk getting 'backup disk not available'

I just installed SL on a brand new MBP. on my last MBP I used to backup to a network volume and htis worked fine (also under SL), and my other MBP is also still backing up fine. however I am unable to get it to work on the new one.
Tried to connect the HD to the MBP and make a backup direct, than move the HD to the server in the network and try to connect, TM refuses to backup to the mounted disk.
I followed these instructions with the same result.

    any tips ideas or tricks?
    thanks.

    What are you backing-up to?
A FW HD connected connected to my MM server hanging in my network
The link in your first post is talking about making TM back up to an unsupported NAS device, but you also mention connecting it "directly" to your Mac, as if it's an external USB or FireWire HD.
Yes to test, I connected the HD direct to my MBP and it did a Backup. Some forums suggest doing this if you can not make a BU over a network to start with. Than connect it in the network and select it as the TM BU, and it works. However, not in my case.
If it is a NAS, especially an unsupported one, it seems to be some sort of problem with the programming on it, or the procedure to connect to it. You'll likely do better contacting the maker.
As said I think the HD is fine, other machines back up to it since ± 18 months with no problems. It must be a setup problem or the likes.
Also be aware that if you have to use that "unsupported devices" Terminal command, you may not be able to do a full system restore from that device. The only way to do one is to boot from your OSX Install disc, and use the installer utility on it, but since you can't apply that command there, it may not recognize your backups.
Worked fine in the past. Did test this in the beginning.

  • Time machine bars+ dates in purple and backup disk not visible in migration

My HD has been replaced recently by Apple due to a fault. Before it was sent away a backup was completed with Time Machine to an external samsung HD. When i recieved my laptop back it had been returned to factory settings. After plugging in the external HD with the recovery on it, Time Machine detected it and allowed me to enter time machine. The dates and bars from the last backup are visible on the right hand side of the screen, but they are a see through purple colour and won't allow me to click on them to then restore. I then tried to use Migrate, but it gets stuck on the 'identifying source' page, where it stays indefinitely. This means i am unable to restore my Macbook Pro to how it was before it was repaired.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I should make clear that I am restoring a 50GB Time Machine Backup from an external disk to the Macintosh HD device. The external disk is 1TB and has 800GB of unused space.

  • Time machine error message backing up

Recently Time Machine gives me an alert:
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
"The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
My dedicated TM disk is 1.5 TB, with about 1/3 of a TB remaining. I have read and write privileges to the disk. Have tried rebuilding the Spotlight index and repairing the disk (with no errors).
The only thing I can think of that is different is that I test the Lion seed from time to time on another volume and see the backup occurring. I hate to start over and lose several weeks of backups. Any ideas would be most welcomed.

That was just one example. Below is a list of Console errors and I don't think I want to delete all of them . I do have one other question. Under "Latest" i show Snow Leopard HD and Snow Leopard Upgrade Archived. The latter is 114.2 GB and I don't need it, but I get a message that backup items can't be modified. Tried to use Cocktail to delete locked or unavailable files, but no go. Here's the Console:

Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  I've tried various suggestions I've seen on the forum but nothing has worked.  TIme Machine worked fine for the last two years and just suddenly started having this problem every time.  The only thing that was a little different is that the computer was off for a week while on vacation and then I added a large amount (20 GB) of photos. Now the requested backup size is 82GB, which is large, and process proceeds very slowly for 2-3 hours before failing with the message mentioned.  I have more than enough available backup storage space for it.  Before failing, Time Machine has backed up no more than 12GB or so of the backup.  It fails during different files each time.
I've turned off the computer sleep feature, and I've checked that the NAS is set to never automatically power down. I normally backup over Wi-Fi, but I've also tried connecting to Ethernet and it still has the same problem.  It's odd because I also have a MacBook Pro that is still backing up fine to the same NAS using the MacBook's Time Machine.
I am using an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS.
I have system logs that I can share if helpful.  The logged messages vary a bit from run to run, but here are some messages that I've been seeing:
I always get this message near the beginning of the backup:
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
I've gotten this messsage a number of times:
    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.

Those indicate that your NAS is not fully compatible with Snow Leopard.

That looks like a problem was found with the file system (data) on the TM disk.  I don't know the details, but OSX tried to recover it from the journal, and found extra data on the drive.    Likely a result of the incompatibility mentioned above.

That's a problem writing to the NAS drive.

Something caused a disconnect.  Can't tell from the log what it was.
I doubt it's a problem with something in OSX being damaged or corrupted, but reinstalling OSX isn't a major hassle, so might be worth a try.
To be incompatible with Snow Leopard, this NAS must be at least a couple of years old.  It may be beginning to fail.
Contact the maker.  See if there's an update to make it compatible with Snow Leopard.  If so, that might fix it.
If not, or if that doesn't fix it, see if they have any diagnostics that will shed any light.

I just bought and backed up my computer and time machine with a "Seagate BackUp Plus for Mac". Now my time machine is empty. Panicked. can anyone help?

    Lets start over...
Please restart the network.. shut down everything..
Restart in order.. modem.. router.. if different to TC.. or TC.. client devices.. wait 2min between each startup.
If the TC does not show up on the computer, in finder.. then we need more info.. what OS are you running?
Does the TC show up in Airport utility? Are you running wireless or ethernet?
If you still have issues.. plug the TC directly into the computer by ethernet.
Do a full factory reset of the TC.. and see if it now shows up.
Please tell us exactly what model TC it is and how old.. the A1xxx model number from the base will help if you don't know.
You take a screen shot of the TC opened in finder.
    eg..
My TC is named Tardis4.. click on it.. and then open the data folder.. on this one called Tardisdata.
Then take a screen shot of it so we can see what the problem is.. screenshot.. with area selection.. control + shift + 4 .. the picture goes into the desktop.. and then you click the picture icon in the posting web page controls and select the picture.

  • I have bought a Seagate Backup Plus 1TB drive, first time I have selected Mac Windows option which excludes Time Machine to work on it, but now I want to go back and select Only Mac option to activate my Time Machine application. I request you to help me

I have bought a Seagate Backup Plus 1TB drive, first time during plug-in, I have selected Mac Windows option which excludes Time Machine to work on it, but now I want to go back and select Only Mac option to activate my Time Machine application.
I request you to help me with the procedure of the same?

IMPORTANT - This will reformat your Seagate drive and hence wipe it.  If there is anything on your Seagate drive you want to keep, save it somewhere else FIRST.
    Plug the drive in.
In Finder select Applications > Utilities > Disc Utilities.
Select the external drive, select Partition option, give it a name (I call mine Mac Backup), select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Format and under the drop down menu "Partition Layout" select the number of partitions you want (so if you want the drive to just be for Time Machine, select 1 Partition, if you want part of the drive to be for Time Machine and the rest for something else, select 2 partitions and so on).  Click apply and the Disc Utility will partition and reformat your drive ready to use.
When this is complete, open Time Machine in System Preferences. Use  Select Disc to select the drive (or if you have multiple partitions, the partition of the drive) you want and you are good to go.
This may be a long way round, but it gives you the option to partition your disc which you may want.

  • HT3275 Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "My Passport Studio".. A disk you are backing up is case-sensitive, but the backup disk is not.

    Hi,
Time Machine won't back up files on another external hard drive as it says it is case sensitive. The other drive contains mainly music and pictures.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    Lisa

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem

Firstly apologies for the long post, I've been bottling these problems up and could now use some expert advice.
I have a MacPro (10.6.3) with four internal drives (320GB system/apps. + 3x 750GB data, images etc) and a MacBook Pro (10.6.6) with a 320GB internal. With so much accumulated data (Mac user since SE FDHD) I wanted a reliable means to backup all my projects, books, papers, research, images etc. I had several bad experiences using Iomega drives (Ultramax and Storcentre) which were not very Mac compatible and shifted over to a 10TB LaCie 5Big Network 2 which is promoted as Time Machine compatible. Set up Time Machine (with a few hiccups) in Sept 2010 and it ran perfectly, backing up both main computers until March 2011. I have now experienced a string of problems backing up the MacPro, some of which have been resolved speaking to people, some by checking forums and some by using my own noddle to figure it out. The latest error message I am getting is "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem. Make sure your computer and the backup disc are on the same network, and that the backup disc is turned on. Then try again to back up."
The circumstances of this are as follows: TM seems to be trying to completely back up everything already backed up from previous months so I am using the "exclude" option to do this in manageable chunks (5.54TB of 7.99TB is available so there is a lot of stuff on there, hence my reticence to erase and start again). I started a backup last night which said it was 242GB and when I came back hours later (I estimate 30GB and hour or 500MB a minute) it has failed with the error message above. I asked it to back up again and it said it now had 191GB to backup, at the next failure it was 142GB, dropping by approx 50GB a time (if there a maximum it can manage in one go?), the next time it was starting again with 242GB.
I checked the disc it was backing up to, discovered it was now selecting Public-1, re-selected Public which houses the macpro.sparsebundle, dropped the backup size (Options) to 73GB and set it off again and it is backing up as I write. I am hoping it will complete and permit another chunk to be backup but the fact it looses network connection (seemingly) or has a maximum backup in one go, is annoying because it means you cannot leave it overnight and trust it to do the backups.
The other problem seems to be a shut down by LaCie 5Big because several times (and once this morning) I have had this message "The file server "LaCie 5Big" has closed down, followed by a complete Lacie shut down and auto-reboot with all lights and whistles. Lacie think this could be a power supply problem and say they are sending me another power brick. They also say they do not support Time Machine (they should check their own literature) and suggest I use LaCie 5Big for 'drag and drop' backup. If I wanted to do that I could pick up a cheap and nasty HD from PCWorld, not this high end 10TB drive which cost over £1,000 !
For a while y'day I could not even find the Lacie on the network but after changing the ethernet cable from Lacie to router (Linksys) it miraculously re-appeared so that problem may have been the original Lacie blue ethernet cable had developed a fault. Checking cables is an oft-overlooked option.
A catalogue of errors, some solved, others still all pervading, so any words from the wise would be gratefully accepted.

I verified the macpro.sparsebundle and Time Machine backups in Disk Utility and it said both appeared to be Okay in green type. So that did not solve the issue. I did a Disk Utility repair a day or so again (despite Verify saying everything was fine) and said there was nothing to repair. I suspect two problems, the power brick may be faulty producing intermittent power and maybe causing the drive to close down (hopefully Lacie will send me a replacement to try) and second, I am thinking the network connection is getting dropped causing crashed backups without the Lacie shutdown/reboot sequence. The 73GB back up failed, I started it again at 54GB and it failed again, just started it again at 45GB - this is no way to progress!
Perhaps the relatively new (last year) Linksys router is the problem, I find my MBP says AirPort is active but it fails to appear in Go>Server unless I switch it off and on again and perhaps a similar problem drops the connnection to the Lacie.

  • Can anyone help me?Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to...  An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.  What is the problem?  I've made no changes.

I recently starting receiving the error message "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to... An erro occurred while copying files.  The problem may be temporary.  If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.  I have had no problems backing up my MacBook Pro 2011 to my Western Digital My Book Live through a Linksys EA4500 router until recently.  I've made no major changes.  I've ran a diagnosis on my back up drive with no problems.  The Time Machine back up starts, but about after about 5 to 10 minutes I get the error message.  I can see the shared drive in Finder.  The light on the drive blinks while it starts the back up.  I can see the shared folders on the networked drive.  The backup process starts but for some reason it just stops.  Can anyone help?

You can't repair a network volume in Disk Utility.
Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)

  • Error Warning that Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to disk, an error occurred while copying files.

I've been getting this warning on my MBA for the last week: "Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “LaCie-2big-NAS.” an error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, us Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I have MBA and iMac, both running Maverick (10.9.4), backed up to LaCie NAS. However, when I go to Disk Utility on the MBA and the iMac, the LaCie does not appear and thus can't be selected to run repair. The iMac seems to be backing up to LaCie without problem. And even seems that MBA is backing up sometimes; when I check Time Machine, I can find files added in the last couple of days.
Is this a real problem? What's fix?
    Thanks
