Time Machine Crashes Leopard

For the first few months TM worked great, backing up wirelessly to my Time Capsule. Jut recently, whenever TM launches and starts "preparing" to backup my screen gets shaded and I am told that I must restart my computer.
When I restart, I am asked to send a report to Apple, which I always do. This is not an intermittent problem, it happens every time TM starts preparing to backup. It happened 3 or 4 times in a row so I disabled TM.
This started about 10 days ago.
I did not install any new programs right before the problem started and have no anti-virus programs which I saw causing problems in some other support discussion threads.
The only two things I think could be related and happened around the time it started: (1) I may have accidentally shut my MBP while TM was backing up once or twice and (2) I have installed a number of Apple's security and OS updates.
Any ideas?

Here are the two panic logs from when I tried TM yesterday:

  • Time Machine Crash  along with death screen

Ever since I did the 10.5.2 update Time Machine crashes, ejects my hard drive, and I keep getting the gray death screen to restart. I turned off Time Machine but my HD keeps getting ejected and still having the restart issue.
I'm running a Mirror face G4 and have NEVER had a problem before, so this is very irritating.

    Hi there,
Thanks for your posting - I followed the links in order to try and find out why my disk image may not be working properly.
I backup my MacBook to an internal slave drive on my G4 using Time Machine. It was working fine for a month but has suddenly given me Kernel Panic so from these posts I assume that to mean a corrupt image. I tried running Disk Warrior on the image. It found a HUGE number of errors. Pretty much every file in the volume was repaired for "Extended Attribute". However, unfortunately Disk Warrior gave the following message:
DiskWarrior has successfully built a new directory for the disk named "Backup of JowieBook." The new directory cannot replace the original directory due to a Mac OS services failure.
Try rebuilding again. If this problem persists, please restart from the DiskWarrior CD and then try rebuilding again.
Hmmm, that not good. I haven't tried restarting from the CD because I don't see much point - the image isn't on the boot drive, it's on a slave. I checked the volume read/write status as suggested and this is the result (abridged):
    image-path : /Volumes/Lemon Jelly/JowieBook_0016cbcc5f19.sparsebundle
image-type : sparse bundle disk image
    writeable : TRUE
    autodiskmount : TRUE
    removable : TRUE
    image-encrypted : false
So I'm pretty stumped. Shall I just run it again? Here's the chmod status of the volume:
    drwxr-xr-x 6 jowie jowie 510 Feb 20 22:30 Backup of JowieBook
I'm not very good with Unix but that looks okay to me... So I'm a bit stumped. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

  • Why does "enter time machine" crash my computer?

The title is pretty descriptive. The "crash" is that I get the spinning beach ball of death and over the course of a few seconds my machine becomes completely non-responsive to input (keystokes stop working, then the wiggling the mouse stops working). I have do hold down the power button to reset the machine after that. Although I'm quite familiar with http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html I don't see that anything readily addresses "Time Machine crashes my whole OS". Any ideas? Thanks!

Here a log of what happens. I got this same effective log in two different situations: first when I ran an attempted backup, then again basically the same when I changed the computer name and tried again. That second attempt is probably pretty telling since there is no sparsebundle with the new computer name, meaning the error of "diskimagealreadyattached" cannot be true.

  • Time machine crashes after Yosemite upgrade

I recently upgraded to Yosemite 10.2.2. on a mid-2010 MacBook, but am having problems backing up using TimeMachine.
I can access my past backups, which is good news, although I need to select one of the disks being backed up in the left column of the finder window (if I just select my username it doesn't seem to work). However, when I attempt a backup the computer crashes during the beginning of the backup process ("Processing backup").  I don't get any particular error message when Time Machine crashes, the computer just restarts and sometimes I will get an error message once the computer has finished restarting indicating that the computer restarted because of a problem.
I back up onto a non-Apple (Seagate) connected to the WiFi network drive, which has been working well for about 6 months under the previous OS.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I've run the disk utility to repair disk permissions, removed the network disk as backup then re-added.

And here is the Problem Details and System Configuration in case its helpful:

  • Time Machine crashes using Mac OSX 10.7.5

Past few days,  Time Machine crashes when attempting to use the application.  This problem just started and had previously worked.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

Just tried to resort a single file and it crashes the finder as soon as I try to go down in the different folders. several restarts did solve that bit and after several attempts I get down 2 or 3 levels but there are no files at all.
If I mount the sparse image on my server (I backup to a server with external hard disk over my local network) all the files are there and I can access them. So I have restored the corrupted file I wanted too, but still need to solve this problem.
    Any tips?

OK. if I go in to the disk that I backup to. I find the disk image of the backup. if I load this I see what is inside.
Again, what do you mean by "load"? If you mean mounting the disk image and using the Finder to copy from the files inside it, that's not "restoring," and isn't recommended, as you will have permissions problems with the copied files.
the folder that refuses to back (all of them on the second level these are tho folders that are the dated folders of the backup) up is the one that is locked, has different permissions as it should have. If I fix the permission of the folders I can see them in the TM backup. however every new backed up folder is locked again and can not be restored till unlocked as described above.
Yes, that's correct. Time Machine tries to keep us mere mortals from shooting ourselves in the foot by messing about with the backups. Once you've manually altered things inside your backups, there's no telling what will (or won't) happen.
Try this: create a new user, and sign on to that account. Make a test folder somewhere inside it's home folder (but not it's desktop) and put some test files in it. Run a backup. Then use the "Star Wars" display to restore that folder to the desktop (an "alternate location.") Does that work? Can you see and change the restored files as that user? Are other users prevented from changing them?
I don't know exactly what's happened, but it appears your backups are badly corrupted. You can try Repairing the sparse bundle (as Mr. Horowitz suggested), per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, but it's doubtful that will really fix them. Your only option may be to delete the sparse bundle and let Time Machine start fresh.

  • Time machine on Leopard server..

I'm considering having my clients (only 10) use Time Machine to perform backups of their User directories using Leopard Server. The current configuration has them using OD Mobile Accounts with Portable Home Directories.
My question is how Time Machine would be implemented.
Would I have to revert to Local Home Directories?
I would like each user to be able to use the Time Machine space view, allowing them to view previous versions of files and/or deleted files.
    Thanks!

I'd also really like to know more about Time Machine on Leopard Server. I just purchased a copy of Server and am trying to figure out a good backup system. I haven't yet installed it, but once I do I'm interested in setting things up so that users can have their home directories on the server and log in from any machine. I've never really figured out if that will require Portable Home Directories or what.
At any rate, I'm not sure if users will have to set up their machines individually to target the server as a Time Machine destination (and then I'd just exclude those home directories from the server's Time Machine setup), or if I can just set the server to run Time Machine and then the users will be able to access all of their histories.
I really hope that it's the latter, because that would make changing things like the drive configuration on the server so much easier.

  • Time Machine crash

My time machine crashes while backuping. Message is
07.10.12 10:09:41,376 mdworker: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary.
That runs for hours with no progress in backup

OK - try, temporarily, turning Spotlight indexing OFF and then try to run the backup. In Terminal (Applications>Utilities) copy and paste into Terminal:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
Then try running the backup. If it works, or even if it doesn't work, enable Spotlight again by copying and pasting into Terminal:
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
Give it a shot - let me know if it works because there have just been too many problems with 10.7.5 and Time Machine.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.2/10.6.3 + Xserve + Time Machine = crash

We have an Xserve (Xserve 2.1) with two 1TB internal drives. Drive 1 is configured as the root drive and has users' home directories. Drive 2 is configured as a backup. Under Leopard, we used Time Machine to backup drive 1 to drive 2. All worked well under Leopard in that regard.
However, after upgrading the Xserve to Snow Leopard, in particular 10.6.2, we began seeing hard crashes/kernel panics every few days. It took awhile to track down. I ran diagnostic tests etc, but after looking at the logs, it appeared that the slapd and Time Machine were not on good terms with one another. I disabled TM, and the crashes/kernel panics stopped. I also found out that OD was somehow hosed in this process, so I rebuilt it, and all was well there too.
I just updated the Xserve with 10.6.3 and noted that one of the improvements was in slapd/TM, so with a certain amount of hope and trepidation, I deleted all the old TM backups, verified the integrity of drive 2, and re-enabled TM.
Unfortunately much the same is happening. TM backed up quite a few GB but then ended abruptly, and drive 2 was nowhere to be seen. DiskUtilities could not find the drive to mount it, nor was I able to find it with the command line utils. It was just gone. Now when this happened in 10.6.2, a simple reboot was insufficient to bring the drive back online.
So, to get the Xserve up and running ASAP, I did a full shutdown of the Xserve. After re-powering the Xserve, the drive was back and I immediately disabled TM. I decided not to wait for the eventual crash/kernel panic to see if that would happen.
Anyone have any insight as to what is happening? What can be done? No backups is not a good idea and I would prefer to use TM, since users are used to it. At this point I am stumped.

Perhaps not the answer you are looking for but...
After my boot disk crash (see the xserver discussions) I found to be the case that my TM backups and my CCC clones of my drives often missed vital files. For example I was left with many zero byte MySQL databases. Fortunately I had copies. I always have multiple backups and different methods, but it still took me days of nerding to get 'back'.
Now before I do an update I buy an external drive that the Xserve can boot, I boot from the SL CD and I make a clone of the boot drive using Disk Utility. I test the clone and make sure it can boot, and then I run the upgrade. (A suggestion from MrHoffman on these forums, well worth adopting).
I am putting off 10.6.3 until I have done this procedure.
Drives are only a hundred units of whatever currency you use. The reassurance of having something that boots and is a bit for bit copy is priceless. Some would say I still dont do enough.
I would say these issues stop Xserves being easy to deploy (without occasional long visits) in colocation......

  • Time Machine (Snow Leopard) Backup to Maverick

Last Monday, my hard drive crashed and a new 1 T was installed.  I had been using Snow Leopard, so TimeMachine was my backup to an external harddrive. The Geek who installed my new harddrive, installed Maverick as the OS.  Okay, so far so good...  But when I returned home, I plugged in my external hard drive and attempted to access Time Machine but TM reports my last backup (April 2013, I know, I know), but does not highlight it so I can restore from it.
The "geek"  spent over 2 hours trying to help me on a remote connection, but no luck.  He ran a disk utility on the Verbatim HD which repaired "minor permissions" but otherwise Verbatim is fine.
The data is still there.  For example, if I wanted to sit for hours, I could bring the photos into iPhoto one by one.  I was able to access my purchased programs, my documents and purchased fonts.  But this would mean having to do the process of re-creating folders and dropping items one at a time.  I also have a hardbound book that I created/purchased from Apple iPhoto just recently and haven't a clue of what sort of file I am looking for.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

See Pondini's TM FAQs, for starters.

  • Time machine crashing and failing to back up

I have 5 intel macs all running snow leopard 10.6.5. I have a macmini server running 10.6.5. I have 4 of the five successfully backing up via time machine to the server.
One fails to back up. It has about 230GB of data on it. If I blow away the current backup and run time machine, it backs up about 25GB and then crashes. Subsequent attempts show that there is 205 GB to back up, it starts, backs up a few GB, maybe 4 or 5, and then crashes. Does the same thing consistently. I thought maybe corrupt files on the client so I have run Disk Warrior on it and Disk Utility. They report all fine now but there were some issues originally. Still the same problem though.
The console report follows and then the crash log. If anyone can translate it form me and suggest a cure, I'd be most grateful.
    thanks

    Thanks Stanley.
I have already tried Disk Utility from an external firewire disk. It finds no errors now. I will try a new cable later today and am considering cloning off the disk via SuperDuper doing a low level format and then restoring.
Given it seems to crash at the same point every time file corruption/media damage seems the most likely problem? Does the crash log confirm this? Makes no sense to me. Gibberish...
    Thanks

  • Restoring Photos from Time Machine Crashes iPhoto

I am attempting to restore some photos to iPhoto from Time Machine.  I can navigate back to the time where the photos are displayed, but when I click on 'Restore' the restoration process commences but then iPhoto crashes.  When iPhoto is re-opened the desired photos have not been restored.
This is disappointing because I rely on Time Machine as my life raft after any 'human error' episodes. What is the required procedure to make this work?
    I am using OS 10.6.7, and iPhoto 7.1.5 ('08)
    Robin

Since posting my original question I have followed the advice I saw for other similar postings.  I have attempted to back up using File>Browse backups..., and rebuilt the database and trashed the iPhoto preference, but to no avail, iPhoto still crashes when attempting to restore a photo.  What I haven't done is to restore the whole database from the Finder in Pictures>iPhoto.  There was conflicting advice in some of the replies that I saw so I am reluctant to attempt that.  But I am getting desperate, any advice please.

  • Time Machine crashes and freezes the OS, I fixed it!

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro (OS X 10.8.2) has experienced this week troubles when backing up with Time Capsule, and I searched on the community and the web where is a lot of same cases, but I didn't found any solution that fit on my case.
    The problem ?
Simply when I start a manual Time Machine backup to the Time Capsule it goes normal for several Gigs and crashes with no error massage and then the OS freezes when trying to stop or force close Time Machine.
    Then ?
The only thing to do for resuming the OS is to hard restart the device.
I found some advices on this community and other forums, but no chance. I will list some:
Open Disk Utility, and select the device's hard drive then choose "Repair disk permissions". You may try this on the backup disk if you are using an external drive for Time Machine.
If you are on an incremential backup, try to delete the old backup file (if you use a Time Capsule) or format (erase) the external drive using Disk Utility. So you start the backup over, even if that should take a long time to finish it may solve problem.
I have tried those steps, and I used both Time Capsule and an external drive for my tests, but I came with no results other than hard resetting my mac every time after a couple Gigs of backup and starts over.
    Solution?
The solution that fixed this error, is to open Option window on the Time Machine Preferences and to Add ( + button) your personal folders one at a time to the excluded items list, and try to backup, if it freezes try to Add another one and try over, until the backup succeeds, the last added folder should the one that causes the crash. you can remove the first added folder but keep the last one, and execute the backup again. For me, after adding System files and Applications folder, Music, Downloads, Pictures the last folder I added before the backup runs normal was the Movies folder. and then I removed all my folders keeping the Movies folder excluded I managed to backup my Mac to both external drive and Time Capsule smoothly again.
    Hope that will helps you.

  • Restoring on a new hard drive with time machine between leopard/snow leopard

I am about to install a new larger hard drive on my late 2007 MacBook (Going from a full 120GB to a 500GB). My MacBook came with Leopard and I upgraded to Snow Leopard when it came out. I have the original Leopard install disks and the upgrade disk from Snow Leopard. I currently have an external HD connected to my airport extreme and Time Machine is on scheduled backup to this drive over the WiFi.
From what I've read it looks like I cannot use the Leopard startup disk to restore my Snow Leopard created Time Machine backup (I've read it becomes unbootable...). I've read about cloning, which feels a little over my head, so I wondered - Can I install Leopard from the original disk, then upgrade to Snow Leopard with the upgrade disk I have, then restore my Time Machine after that? I assume it would be fastest to restore the Time Machine backup if I have the external connected directly to the USB of the MacBook rather than over the WiFi - yes?
If I can tack on a slight hardware question too - is it worth upgrading from 2 to 4GB of RAM while I'm going to be inside my computer?
    Thanks!!!

Partition the drive in GUID format with one Mac OS X data partition.

  • Time Machine crashing computer!

I have a 24" iMac, running 10.6.4 with an issue I cannot explain.
I launch Time Machine, it begins to back up the data from my HD which now has 385GB. It gets to about 5 gigs, locks up the machine, it goes to sleep and I have to hit the space bar to wake it. I can wake the machine only three times and then it shuts the whole thing down. So I disconnected all of my cables, then hooked up the back up only instead of running it through a USB hub. No luck, same thing. I reformatted the ext hd to one partition, no luck. I changed the ext hd to a different one. Each ext hd is 1Tb in size. They are totally blank.
If I turn off time machine, computer runs fine, no freeze, no crash. So there is some issue with time machine on my machine.
Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me!
    Jim

    Hello j:
You might try trashing a preference file (com.apple.timemachine.plist) and restarting.
If the program pauses at the same point, there may be a corrupted file that is causing the problem.
