Time machine crashing and failing to back up

I have 5 intel macs all running snow leopard 10.6.5. I have a macmini server running 10.6.5. I have 4 of the five successfully backing up via time machine to the server.
One fails to back up. It has about 230GB of data on it. If I blow away the current backup and run time machine, it backs up about 25GB and then crashes. Subsequent attempts show that there is 205 GB to back up, it starts, backs up a few GB, maybe 4 or 5, and then crashes. Does the same thing consistently. I thought maybe corrupt files on the client so I have run Disk Warrior on it and Disk Utility. They report all fine now but there were some issues originally. Still the same problem though.
The console report follows and then the crash log. If anyone can translate it form me and suggest a cure, I'd be most grateful.
thanks
Mark

Thanks Stanley.
I have already tried Disk Utility from an external firewire disk. It finds no errors now. I will try a new cable later today and am considering cloning off the disk via SuperDuper doing a low level format and then restoring.
Given it seems to crash at the same point every time file corruption/media damage seems the most likely problem? Does the crash log confirm this? Makes no sense to me. Gibberish...
Thanks
Mark

  • Time Machine crashes and freezes the OS, I fixed it!

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro (OS X 10.8.2) has experienced this week troubles when backing up with Time Capsule, and I searched on the community and the web where is a lot of same cases, but I didn't found any solution that fit on my case.
    The problem ?
Simply when I start a manual Time Machine backup to the Time Capsule it goes normal for several Gigs and crashes with no error massage and then the OS freezes when trying to stop or force close Time Machine.
    Then ?
The only thing to do for resuming the OS is to hard restart the device.
I found some advices on this community and other forums, but no chance. I will list some:
Open Disk Utility, and select the device's hard drive then choose "Repair disk permissions". You may try this on the backup disk if you are using an external drive for Time Machine.
If you are on an incremential backup, try to delete the old backup file (if you use a Time Capsule) or format (erase) the external drive using Disk Utility. So you start the backup over, even if that should take a long time to finish it may solve problem.
I have tried those steps, and I used both Time Capsule and an external drive for my tests, but I came with no results other than hard resetting my mac every time after a couple Gigs of backup and starts over.
    Solution?
The solution that fixed this error, is to open Option window on the Time Machine Preferences and to Add ( + button) your personal folders one at a time to the excluded items list, and try to backup, if it freezes try to Add another one and try over, until the backup succeeds, the last added folder should the one that causes the crash. you can remove the first added folder but keep the last one, and execute the backup again. For me, after adding System files and Applications folder, Music, Downloads, Pictures the last folder I added before the backup runs normal was the Movies folder. and then I removed all my folders keeping the Movies folder excluded I managed to backup my Mac to both external drive and Time Capsule smoothly again.
    Hope that will helps you.

  • My Time Machine recently has failed to back up

I have been using my time machine to back up my MACBOOK pro for awhile now, and in the past week I have been getting the message " Time Machine could not complete the back up- The back up disk imsage " / volumes/ My time machine-1/ My Name's MacBook pro.sparesbundle" is already in use.
I have no idea how to fix this problem any help would be great

You might have an actual OS issue or corrupt hard drive.
Do a verify of the local source drive and the TC sparse bundle.. See A5 in the same reference as mende1 gave.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You can also do a reset of TM.. A4 which can help if you upgraded OS instead of clean install.
Load the widget A1 to get more info.. and finally connect the TC to the computer by ethernet.. do not use wireless.. full reset of the TC and do a backup in complete isolation and see if that works.. if so it can be wireless/network issues.

  • TIme Machine crashes my Mac

iMac 2006, running OS x 10.5.8 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR1 SDRAM. Of the 152.23 Macintosh HD, 56 Gig is free
External 500 Gig WD USB2 HD for Time Machine.
When Time Machine is running and the TM icon at the top of the Mac is revolving, my iMac crashes or just hangs and won't do anything if I try to open a new prog. This can happen with just the TM running and doing a backup, nothing else apart from Finder running and then I try to open Activity Monitor from Utilities.
The ONLY way to get the iMac back is to switch it off (I know- NOT a good idea!!!), relaunch the iMac as an external Firewire drive from my Macbook, run Disc Utilities from my Macbook and then repair the iMac's HD then reboot the iMac.
Any suggestions as to what is going wrong? For months TM gave me no problems and then this has started over the last three weeks...
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

    Pondini,
    Thanks for the advice.
I repaired my iMac hard disc by booting it as an external Firewire disc using my Macbook as the parent machine and the iMac connected via Firewire as the target, rebooting the iMac with the T button on the keyboard pressed then launching Disc Utility from the Macbook and repairing the HD of the iMac.
I then rebooted, repaired disc permissions on the iMac then rebooted again.
I then used Disc Utilities on the iMac to verify the iMac's HD which came back with the message that the disc appears to be fine.
That's a bit of overkill -- for the internal HD, all you needed to do was run a +*Verify Disk+* while booted normally.
I then ran Disc Utilities from the iMac, repaired Time Machine disc (that took ages and whilst the repair was happening, all sorts of errors were found) and then rebooted again.
I then used Disc Utilities to verify the Time Machine disc and that came back fine as well.
Again, overkill. Just run +*Repair Disk+* on the TM drive while booted normally.
I then ran Cocktail and selected the monthly maintenance scripts - nothing else was opened on the iMac. At this point, I went to bed!
    Not needed.
Having just returned to my office this morning, I find the iMac hung once again!!! Whilst Cocktail was running, Time Machine started (the icon at the top of the screen started to revolve) and my iMac is hung and completely non-responsive.
I don't use Cocktail, so don't know if there may be a conflict there, but it seems unlikely.
The only way I could get the iMac back was to power down, remove ALL the cables, wait for a minute or two, power up the iMac as an external Firewire drive from my Macbook, repair the iMac HD from Disc Utilities running on my Macbook (as above), then reboot the iMac, repair disc permissions on the iMac using the iMac's Disc Utilities, then verify the iMac HD, then repair the Time Machine disc again using the iMac's Disc Utilities - i.e. EXACTLY the same process that I when through yesterday evening.
Again, far more than you needed to do.
I just can't afford to buy a new iMac.
Huh? Who suggested that? There's no indication of any dire hardware problem on your Mac (your external HD may be failing, though).
Do you have any other suggestions???
Yes. CALM DOWN and SLOW DOWN.
Read my suggestions a bit closer, please. #A5 in the Troubleshooting Tip explains clearly how to repair your TM drive without all the extra work and drama. I didn't even suggest repairing your internal HD (although it does rule that out as a problem). And again, it's much easier to do if you follow #A5 -- that's why I took the time to write it!
Did you try doing a backup with Activity Monitor already running and onscreen, as in the next to last paragraph of my last post?
I don't know how to find the error log files on the iMac and would it help if you told me how to find them and then I posted them up on here?
Yes. See the last paragraph of my last post (or #A1 in . . . yes, the Troubleshooting Tip).

  • When Time Machine tries to back up to my Seagate HD before the HD is fully on, it fails. Then Time machine thinks it needs to back up the entire drive and there's not enough room. It won't just do the backup of new info now. Any thoughts?

When I try to do a Time Machine backup with my Seagate HD, and if I accidentally have Time Machine automatically on, it will fail if the HD is not fully on and recognized by the computer yet. But the problem is that when this has happened (twice now), it seems it loses all knowledge that it has backed up using Time Machine before and it will only try to back up the entire Mac HD to the Seagate. The Seagate already has 147 GB of data from prior Time Machine backups and I only need to backup the latest stuff since my last backup, but it won't let me do that. It tries to do the whole drive and it says it can't because there is only 135 GB of space left and it needs to backup 147 GB. Anyone know how to fix this and get it to start backing up again without erasing the drive and starting over? That's what I did last time. I erased the Seagate and then reset it as my Time Machine drive and it started working fine again until it failed and reverted to the problem. Thanks

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included—anonymize before posting.

I just backed up my mac to an external hard drive using Time Machine. What would happen if I turn Time Machine off and then plug the external hard drive back into my computer?
What I am ultimately wanting to do is make more room on my computer by backing up all of my files onto the external hard drive and then deleting them off of my computer. However, neededing to be able to retrieve them from the external hard drive later down the road.
From what I have read and am trying to understand, is that I probably shouldn't have used time machine. I need to use the external hard drive like a basic flash drive where I can put things on and get things off without having it automatically update through time machine everytime I connect it to my computer.
Not tech savvy at all and barely understand basics. I need very simple and easy to understand explanations.

BIG BIG MISTAKE ..... youre making a linchpin deathtrap for your data trying to shove everything on a single fragile HD.
Dont suffer the tragedy other people make, buy another or 2 more HD, theyre cheap as dust.
The number of people who have experienced terror by having a single external HD backup is enormous.  One failure that WILL HAPPEN, and kaput,......all gone!
Dont do it, its all about redundancy, redundancy, redundancy.
    follow here:
Methodology to protect your data. Backups vs. Archives. Long-term data protection
Deleting them off your computer is fine....having only ONE copy is extremely BAD.
The Tragedy that will be, the tragedy that never should be
Always presume correctly that your data is priceless and takes a very long time to create and often is irreplaceable. Always presume accurately that hard drives are extremely cheap, and you have no excuse not to have multiple redundant copies of your data copied on hard drives and squirreled away several places, lockboxes, safes, fireboxes, offsite and otherwise.
Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail (the very same is true of SSD). Hard drives dont die when aged, hard drives die at any age, and peak in death when young and slowly increase in risk as they age.
Never practice at any time for any reason the false premise and unreal sense of security in thinking your data is safe on any single external hard drive. This is never the case and has proven to be the single most common horrible tragedy of data loss that exists.
Many 100s of millions of hours of lost work and data are lost each year due to this single common false security. This is an unnatural disaster that can avoid by making all data redundant and then redundant again. If you let a $60 additional redundant hard drive and 3 hours of copying stand between you and years of work, then you've made a fundamental mistake countless 1000s of people each year have come to regret.

  • I recovered my back up via a wired connection. now Time Machine does not recognise older back ups wirelessly and wants to do a first back up

I recovered a back up from my time machine via a wired connection after getting the 'white screen of death'. Now Time Machine does not recognise any back ups on the time machine when connected wirelessly and wants to do a first back up of the whole machine. How do I get my mac to recognise these older back ups? It connects to the wifi network the time machine creates fine, with the same name and password.

    I recommend the following.
    1. Reset the TC to factory.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. Rename the TC to SMB standard.
That means short names.. 2-20 characters but less than 10 is excellent. eg TCGenx (use number for x that is actual generation of the TC)
    No spaces.
    Pure alphanumeric. No apostrophe.
    3. Ensure IPv6 is set to link-local..
Do the same thing for ethernet if that is used.
    4. Manually mount the TC disk in Finder.
Use Go in the top menu.. connect to server.
    Type in
AFP://TCname.local (where TCname is your new short name for the TC and local is default domain .. it helps using the domain I found).
You will then find the computer either can or cannot find the network resource.. if it fails something else is wrong with the actual network and you will need to fix that.
It will request the password if it is found.. password is public by default unless you changed it.. type in the password and check to keep it in your keychain.
    5. Delete current TM setup and redo it with the newly named TC.
    See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If your backups cannot be found, try B6 again, now that you actually know that the disk has been properly discovered.

  • Time machine tells me last successful back up 19 August 2014. Have done restores and utility checks to no avail.

time machine tells me last successful back up 19 August 2014. Repeated attempts to correct have failed. any thoughts?
    thanks, Diane

We need a bit more info.
You don't state that you are backing up to a Time Capsule but I am guessing that is the case.
    1. I need to know, what TC??
A1xxx from the base please. They do go faulty as they age.
    2. How is it connected into the network? Is it main router or bridged? Plugged into what router or modem?
    3. How does the computer connect to it?
    4. Is the computer running Lion as per your profile or is it Mavericks? This latest OS is problematic. Its network reliability is poor.
If you are running mavericks.. and using wireless then I recommend you plug the computer directly to the TC by ethernet.
You can turn off wireless and see if you can get TM to start.
Otherwise go through the Mavericks clean setup with the TC and see if that will get it going.
Airtport Utility can't find Airport Time Capsule on either of my 2009 Macs
The very simple version of this..
Mount the TC hard disk in Finder manually.
Type AFP://10.0.1.1 (or whatever IP is shown by the airport utility)
You will be asked for the disk password.. supply it and save it in the keychain.
Try TM.. if it still doesn't work, reset TM and try again.
    A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Ensure that IPv6 is set to link-local only in both wireless and ethernet (if you use it).
No luck you will need to follow the clean setup instructions and start over from scratch.

  • Time Machine/Capsule Continually Failing Back-up

    Hi,
I have been having this issue for weeks now but whenever I attempt to back up my iMac (Mid 2011 Model, with Mountian Lion 10.8.3) it constantly fails and I have been running around these forums like crazy trying to find a solution. I bought my Time Capsule with my iMac, 2TB version. I also back-up my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 Model) All of this started when for some reason Time Machine stopped working and I wipped everything and started again.
It is connected wirelessly to my router and to both Macs (Too far away for me to hard wire).

    Hello CaribouMaine55,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
I was researching what might be going on here, and found a great article named Time Machine: Troubleshooting backup issues found here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275.
It is pretty lengthy but I feel has the best advice for getting your Time Machine up and running.
    All the very best,

  • Upgraded to Mavericks  and time machine backups keep failing.

I upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago and now I find my time machine backups keep failing. I first tried turning off the power to the time machine then turning it on again and I managed to get one complete backup but that took over 20 hours to complete.
The time machine  backup mode never seems to get beyond " preparing backup" then showing the message "backing up failed, disc already in use"
The time machine backup worked fine before I upgraded, is there a way round this problem or will I have to go through reloading the time machine as if it were a new piece of equipment?
My wife's iMac is still on mountain lion 10.8.5  and the backups on the same Time Machine work fine.
Any help would be gratefully received
    Greg

    Hi,
I have exactly the same problem.
MBP 2011 running 10.9 named "ebook"
MacMini running 10.8.5 server with TM share
everything works fine UNTIL for some reason the MBP is interrupted during a TM backup ...
After that I get the disk already in use error !
Rebooting the MBP wont help, but I narrowed the problem down ...
Looking on the Mini server I noticed :
    - the TM backup user stays connected over AFP, even after several hours of inactivity and a couple of reboots of the MBP. Killing the AFP connection works, But problem stil continues !
    - looking on the MBP with "lsof | grep ebook" showed me that the SparseBundles were still in use by the AFP process ... Using the Server control panel and restarting AFP solved that ...
After restarting the AFP process the remote TM Backup started to work again !
A couple of days later, the same problem occurred again, fixed it by this work around ...
I hope there will be a more permanent solotiun for this !

  • Time machine crashes finder on restore and I see no record of files.

Time machine crashes the finder on restore and I see no files.
Just tried to resort a single file and it crashes the finder as soon as I try to go down in the different folders. several restarts did solve that bit and after several attempts I get down 2 or 3 levels but there are no files at all.
If I mount the sparse image on my server (I backup to a server with external hard disk over my local network) all the files are there and I can access them. So I have restored the corrupted file I wanted too, but still need to solve this problem.
    Any tips?

OK. if I go in to the disk that I backup to. I find the disk image of the backup. if I load this I see what is inside.
Again, what do you mean by "load"? If you mean mounting the disk image and using the Finder to copy from the files inside it, that's not "restoring," and isn't recommended, as you will have permissions problems with the copied files.
the folder that refuses to back (all of them on the second level these are tho folders that are the dated folders of the backup) up is the one that is locked, has different permissions as it should have. If I fix the permission of the folders I can see them in the TM backup. however every new backed up folder is locked again and can not be restored till unlocked as described above.
Yes, that's correct. Time Machine tries to keep us mere mortals from shooting ourselves in the foot by messing about with the backups. Once you've manually altered things inside your backups, there's no telling what will (or won't) happen.
Try this: create a new user, and sign on to that account. Make a test folder somewhere inside it's home folder (but not it's desktop) and put some test files in it. Run a backup. Then use the "Star Wars" display to restore that folder to the desktop (an "alternate location.") Does that work? Can you see and change the restored files as that user? Are other users prevented from changing them?
I don't know exactly what's happened, but it appears your backups are badly corrupted. You can try Repairing the sparse bundle (as Mr. Horowitz suggested), per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, but it's doubtful that will really fix them. Your only option may be to delete the sparse bundle and let Time Machine start fresh.

  • HT201250 I backed up my iMac with a "WD My Passport" using the Time Machine option and tried to restore my iMac but it only saved my applications none of my documents, photos nothing else! What happened?

I backed up my iMac with a "WD My Passport" using the Time Machine option and tried to restore my iMac but it only saved my applications none of my documents, photos nothing else! What happened?

There should be two sparse bundles on the TC, one for each Mac.  If you click the TC in a Finder sidebar, you should see something like this (in Column View):
If you see the sparse bundle for the iMac there, but not on the window where you do a full system restore (after starting from your Recovery HD or OSX Install disc), they may be corrupted (especially if your iMac was failing at the time of the last backup).
Try repairing those backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Then try the full restore again, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.  Note that if you suspect problems on the most recent backup, you might want to select an earlier one.

  • Time machine on external drive will not back up itunes media file on a separate external drive. Have already reformated itunes media drive, dragged itunes media backup file from time machine (old copy) and removed time machine plist and restarted.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
    Any help for this??
    Thanks

after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?
before the upgrade, i could open time machine without the need for having the back up disk plugged in.

Ok. I got it to work, sort of....
As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.

Had a recent crash on my macbook, was previously using OS 10.6 I think. Restored from recent Time Machine backup and updated to OS 10.8.2 and now I cannot open Logic Pro 9. I get a 'No entry' Icon and a not supported on this type of Mac message. I cannot update either as anything up to 9.1.1 tells me I don't need it yet 9.1.2 tells me I need an eligable Logic Pro Version was not found in applications.
All of my files are stored in a separate hard drive with only the actual app having been on my Macbook. Should I just reinstall?

    Hi
To run Mouitain Lion you need to update Logic.
For the updaters to work the Logic application must be:
    a) Within the Applications folder, and not in any sub-folder
    b) Named "Logic Pro" with no extra numbers or spaces
