Time Machine destination not resolvable?

Time Machine/Time Capsule has been working flawlessly until 2/24 when I started receiving the following error message:
"The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I've used disk utility - I've reset Time Machine (per Pondini's handy site!) - I've tried another external hard drive - same message. And when I run Console and try and track down a possibly problematic file, I get "time machine destination not resolvable?"
Help!

I've got a very similar setup and issue: 1 month old 2 TB hangs off a MP via USB and has successfully been been backing up for the MP, a MBP via WiFi and, until recently, my MBP via WiFi. Now it seems to back up a few gigs, partially verify, and then pop up with the error message: "The backup was not performed...". (Relevant console excerpts below.** Apparently tripping up on different files each time.) I've
• run both MBP and sparsebundle through Disk Utility's repair.
• deleted the drive from Spotlight's indexing (on the MP)
• tried backing up with a direct (USB) connection. (Same behavior.)
• probably tried a couple of other things which I can't remember.
Haven't swung a cat around or sacrificed a goat yet. The neighbor has a cat but I'd have to find the goat. Might be simpler to erase the sparsebundle and start again, though that seems a bit drastic. Have I missed something before I do that? TIA.

  • Time Machine does not run automatic backups

For the last couple of days TM is refusing to run the hourly backups.
Manual backups run fine, but not the automatic ones.
Modifying the exclude list seems to have no effect on the manual backups.
It keeps using the "old" exclude list, i.e. the one I had before the problem
    started.
In /var/log/system.log I find the following message every hour:
    Nov 18 21:26:03 macdelta com.apple.backupd-auto[12774]: Not starting scheduled T
ime Machine backup - time machine destination not resolvable.
    I checked the plist
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backupd-auto.plist
and it seems to be fine. It is identical to the one in another mac that shows no problems with TM. The same is true for the other plists related to backupd in that directory.
Question 1: What are all the plists that control the behaviour of TM
Question 2: How do I resume hourly automatic backups?

My laptop's drive is encrypted and my laptop is with me at all times. The backup disk remains at my desk and does not have a cable lock. The important thing to consider here is that even if your laptop drive is encrypted (e.g., through FileVault), the TimeMachine backups *are not* (unless you are logged out of your account when you backup--at which point, why bother using TimeMachine over a simple disk cloner such as SuperDuper!?).
Anyway, that's off-topic for now. You mention that it changed the element of the plist that identifies the backup volume, do you mean the UUID element? I noticed it changed:
    10.6.4:
    <key>DestinationVolumeUUID</key>
    <string>040F3E3C-11BF-3AF9-8813-2B6110B200A0</string>
    10.6.5:
    <key>DestinationUUID</key>
    <string>24E15602-063A-3930-B1FE-F2DB15865083</string>
In addition, after doing a reset (while attempting to trouble shoot this issue), the new plist is missing some things the old plist had--for example:
    <key>HostUUIDs</key>
    <array>
    <string>00000000-0000-1000-8000-0017F2C65E0C</string>
    <string>25233988-B93F-56AF-B940-F386CB4442EC</string>
    </array>
    Thoughts?

  • Time Machine will not back up external photo drive

Time Machine will not back up external photo drive, slightly different format, one case sensitive the other not. How do I resolve. Bought new external drive same format as TM in the hope  that I could copy the files from photo drive but that will not copy all files  as it is saying file already there. Again the case sensitive issue...
Paranoid about losing  1Tb of photos all cataloged in LR5
Possible solutions I have looked at but not yet tried.
Use the new 2Tb drive to make a new TM backup then reformat the old 4Tb drive the same as Photo drive.
Then do a complete backup of all files and photodrive to TM.
A lot of work, USB 2, so if any one has a simpler answer I would love to hear.

What message did you get? You should never change permissions (or anything else) on a Time Machine drive -- TM does that for you.
Start with #C2 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.
If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results.

I upgraded to Maverick and now Time Machine will not connect to the external hard drive to back up files.  The external hard drive is a Western Digital "My Book Live" 2 TB.  How do I solve problem?

I also had problem accessing my WD MyBookLive after upgrading to Maverick.
To resolve the problem, I used  Connect To Server (Cmd K) to specify the IP address.
Then I enter a user id and password I created in the MyBookLive.
You can also verify that you have admin access to the MyBookLive using Safari or Chrome.
Just enter the MyBookLive IP address as the URL.

  • Time machine does not recognize backup disk after Yosemite

I have this issue in both macs I own, a 2010 MBP, and a 2012 Mac mini. After I upgraded to yosemite, Time Machine will not find my backup disk. I have been using the same network attached storage drive for 4 years for time machine backups. I has worked fine with all the macs I've owned until now. I can see the disk in Finder, I can go to disk utility and mount the Time Machine disk, but when I go to Time Machine preferences and try to select the list, the disk is not listed there, even though is mounted.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want. I know Time Machine accepted the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

  • Time Machine does not create req'd file and fails. Restart provides a fix until the problem recurs.

Latest reply from Pondini is as follows:
You're still having a problem with Apple's old Backup app (with the umbrella icon).
It should be sending a message when that happens; (it does)if not, make sure you have the current version (3.2).  If not, it should be available in the Softwarefolder on your iDisk, or here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1025.
If you do, start Backup, double-click the Plan in question, select the Historytab, then double-click the date/time of the backup in question to see the log.  The error message should be towards the end.
Following the above instructions from Pondini produces this entry in the Backup App log:
    Connected to MobileMe
    Beginning a new Full Backup...
    Begin backup at 2011-12-08 08:14:49.369 -0500
    Scanning files...
Acquired a destination for the backup.
    Copied part 1 of file /Users/wpiez/Pictures/iPhoto Libraryb.zip
Unable to upload to /Backup/iPhoto Libraryb - 2011.12.08-08.14.49.369 - Part 1.FullBackup on iDisk
    End backup at 2011-12-08 09:54:02.905 -0500
I am guessing Backup did not backup the file iPhoto Libraryb.zip because the same file was already on iDisk. This somehow leaves a deadend trap in Time Machine.
Have checked and found my Backup App is version 3.2. Have changed my Backup instructions to work only manually. Am hoping not running it will avoid creating problems in Time Machine. Latter working OK after restarting.
As an aside I think I will miss iDisk when Apple stops it. If my house burns down taking my computers, my hard drive, my separate hard drive dedicated to backups and my disk backups, it would be nice to have replacements offsite. Maybe will decide to engage a non-Apple service for that.
Thanks to Linc D and Pondini and other anonymous rreaders and thinkers.

    Hi, again,
Are you signed-on to Mobile Me, via System Preferences > MobileMe > Account?  If not, do so.  If you are, sign out for a few moments, then back on.  Then try again.

Not necessary.  The two are unrelated (except for Backup delaying a scheduled backup if a Time Machine backup is running).  I run both myself, with no problems, and my Backups are scheduled.

I agree.    Apple doesn't seem to have anything else at the moment.  Many folks are switching to DropBox.

That seems unusual unless you changed drives.
If you upgraded the drive it sees the computer as a different one to the original backup..
I am not sure that it isn't better to do a fresh backup but you can try and inherit the old backup..

Your external HDD needs to be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) for Time Machine to use it as a backup destination. You can move your current data off the drive and format it via Disk Utility.
You mentioned there are TM backup folders. Curious that you cannot access them. How are you trying to access them? Are you using the TM interface or viewing it via Finder?

Can someone please help me re-install my Creative Design 5.5 on my Mac?  My MacBook Pro recently crashed and had to have the hard drive replaced.  The back up from Time Machine is not reinstalling the program.  Since I have the download paid, and codes, I need direction on how to reinstall -- HELP?

    Hi bodegakc,
If you have the serial number then please use the below mentioned link to download the product you are looking for .
    CS5.5
Also before installing Please go to Applications-->Utilities--> Adobe installers and if there is any uninstaller for CS5.5 , you can remove it and do a fresh install.
You can also use creative cloud cleaner tool before installing.
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

  • "Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk is not availab

I have a Seagate 750 MB external disk connected to the USB port of my Airport Extreme Base Station. It worked fine with Time Machine under Leopard but it's not working the way it was under OS X 10.6.2. I'm hopeful someone can help me solve the problem.
Let's say the name of my Airport Extreme Base Station is "Airport." If I remember correctly, under Leopard time machine would start a wireless backup not long after I turned on the Seagate drive. That no longer happens.
I've erased and re-formatted the Seagate drive with 2 GUID partitions, one for my 24" iMac and one for my 17" MacBook Pro. Both computers are about 3 years old. In order to do the re-partitioning, I had to unplug the Seagate drive from the base station and plug it into one of the iMac's USB ports. If I didn't do this, nothing other than the iMac's drive appears in the left pane of Disk Utility, although the name of my base station, i.e, "Airport" does appear in the Finder and PathFinder (a replacement for Finder that I use).
In fact, Time Machine works under 10.6.2. as long as the Seagate drive is plugged into the iMac's USB port. As soon as I plug the Seagate drive into the USB port of the base station, Time Machine no longer works. The backup is "delayed." When I click on "Back Up Now" a few seconds go by and I get the following dialog box: "Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk is not available."
In my Airport Extreme Base Station setup (Airport Utility version 5.4.2), the "Disks" pane sees both partitions on the Seagate drive. File sharing is enabled on the "File sharing" pane and "Secure Shared Disks:" is set to "With a disk password." "Airport Disks Guest Access:" is not allowed, nor is "Share disks over WAN."
When the Seagate drive is plugged into the base station and I click on "Airport" in the Finder or PathFinder, I'm prompted for the password I mentioned above because the shared disks are secured with a password. Once the password is typed, both partitions on the Seagate drive appear in Finder and PathFinder. When I try a Time Machine backup at this point, I get the same error I described above, i.e., "Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk is not available."
One last thing, I did an "Archive and Install" when I upgraded to Snow Leopard since I thought the changes were relatively minor as compared with past OS X upgrades. Normally, I do a clean install but didn't feel like it this time. I also tried deleting the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist to no avail and restarted my iMac to no avail.
At this point I'm completely stumped. As I said, Time Machine works as long as the Seagate drive is plugged directly into one of the iMac's USB ports as opposed to the base station's USB port. But doesn't this defeat the purpose of having wireless backup? Once again, the wireless backup worked fine under 10.5.8.
I hope my message is clear and a solution would be most welcome.
    Thank you,
    Richard

I'm having the same problem. If my TimeMachine drive is not connected, I'll get the "Time machine could not complete the backup" "The backup disk is not available" warning a couple times a day. This is extremely problematic if I'm giving a presentation. I have tried changing my TimeMachine drive, removing that drive, repairing permissions, and have not been able to solve the problem.
    Please help!
