Time machine destinations
Hello,
as my MacBook Pro is backed up with the help of Time Machine to Time Capsule I have a question about my external hard drives. Time Capsule for my MBP is 1Tb and my macbook has as well 1Tb of combined space for data. As I am a photo-/videographer I keep most of my large sensible data on my external firewire drives. So far I have been doing manual backups of my external drives.
How could I automate this process?
If I would get another external drive for Time Machine, would it allow me to do independent backups of just one specifically selected external drive to chosen desitination?
My current Time Capsule is 1Tb in size, that clearly is not enough to backup my notebook as well my external "working" 2Tb drive for this year. I would love to have an option that any time I connect my external 2Tb drive to MBP it gets backed up to another Time Capsule or another external hard drive when it is available.
it definitely does not use the drive name. that name is not even mentioned in the TM preference file. you'll have to reselect the designated TM drive every time you switch drives. having the same name is not enough.

Time Machine destination not resolvable?
Time Machine/Time Capsule has been working flawlessly until 2/24 when I started receiving the following error message:
"The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I've used disk utility - I've reset Time Machine (per Pondini's handy site!) - I've tried another external hard drive - same message. And when I run Console and try and track down a possibly problematic file, I get "time machine destination not resolvable?"
Help!I've got a very similar setup and issue: 1 month old 2 TB hangs off a MP via USB and has successfully been been backing up for the MP, a MBP via WiFi and, until recently, my MBP via WiFi. Now it seems to back up a few gigs, partially verify, and then pop up with the error message: "The backup was not performed...". (Relevant console excerpts below.** Apparently tripping up on different files each time.) I've
• run both MBP and sparsebundle through Disk Utility's repair.
• deleted the drive from Spotlight's indexing (on the MP)
• tried backing up with a direct (USB) connection. (Same behavior.)
• probably tried a couple of other things which I can't remember.
Haven't swung a cat around or sacrificed a goat yet. The neighbor has a cat but I'd have to find the goat. Might be simpler to erase the sparsebundle and start again, though that seems a bit drastic. Have I missed something before I do that? TIA.

Is it possible to use NAS storage (WD My Cloud EX2 or WD My Cloud EX4) which is wired via LAN to current AirPort Extreme, as a Time Machine backup destination?
There are two reasons I came up with this question.
- Connecting via Ethernet should be faster than USB 2.0 connection
- 8TB NAS storages are slightly cheaper than 8TB USB HDD
If it is impossible, I am planning to buy My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB and wire it for MacBook Pro directly for the purpose of Time Machine backup.
I have a concern with my primal idea of backing up via WiFi, as I tend to handle big files when doing music production or movie editing. I wonder if this affect the performance of MacBook Pro, as it might take more time to complete each backup via WiFi.

How to backup while away from usual Time Machine destination?
When at home, I have Time Machine backup to a Time Capsule (and a couple of external drives that I rotate off-site).
I'd like to guard against losing any files changed while I'm away from home for some days should I lose my hard disk. One possibility is having an external HD with a full TM backup on it but this isn't appealing to me because the HD would end up being stored close to my Macbook and it's possible they could disappear togather. The volume of modified data to backup would easily fit on a USB stick or SD card that I could keep in my pocket.
Is there a way to backup only those files modified since my last backup to Time Capsule (to my SD card)? Some reading about rsync, mtmd and mtmfs didn't yield anything useful.
My current workaround is to create a smart folder in Finder of files modified after a specified date and copy these to the SD card. This doesn't preserve the directory structure.First, understand that having one, and only one, backup isn't that much safer than having none. I can't count the number of times I've seen someone lose the internal hard drive only to discover a previously undetected problem with the one and only backup drive. It sounds too coincidental to be likely, but gut feelings in this case have little to do with reality.
So, that said, I wouldn't try to limit this secondary backup method as you stated. I would create a full secondary backup plan. Use some online service, like CrashPlan or Carbonite. Note that I don't use those (not away from home enough to warrant it), so don't take that as an endorsement of those two particular services! -
Exclude Hidden File from Time Machine Backup?

Used the Time Machine error message widget, and got the following info:

I searched for the trouble file so I could exclude it from the backup, but couldn't find it.

On all my machines the Time Machine destination disk is normally excluded. I can't remember if I did this or it's added by default. You can excluded anything you want in the Privacy tab of Spotlight's system preferences.

Why do I have time machine disk problem after closing and later reopening clamshell.
I consistently see the following after closing and later reopening my Macbook Pro (5,1). I have to unplug and replug my Time Machine USB drive.
The only thing new is Mountain Lion. The Time Machine disk has 229 GB free of 1.5 TB. I never had to unplug this drive under Lion.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I ran disc repair on Time Machine Drive yesterday, but it found nothing.

Time Machine is intended to be left enabled always whether a backup drive is connected or not. What Time Machine cannot handle properly is a situation where the backup drive loses power for whatever reason. Time Machine treats this, as does the OS, as an improper disconnect of an external drive without being properly ejected. This in turn throws Time Machine a little bit of a loop.
For you I would suggest not using Time Machine. Instead use a third-party backup utility that you can either schedule or run manually as you wish. They will work with the same drive you have used for Time Machine, but you will need to first erase the Time Machine drive using Disk Utility. Please DO NOT try dragging the Time Machine backups to the Trash.
Here are some good backup utilities you can try:
Suggested Backup Software
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate. Each one can be used for a trial period. No need to pay for one until you've decided on which one you like best. I, for example, use Carbon Copy Cloner but please don't take that as a recommendation over the others. It's just my preference. All can be operated manually or can be set up to backup on a schedule you determine. Some can even be set up to backup as soon as the backup drive is connected.

Is there a way to put system to sleep after Time Machine runs?
I don't need to run Time Machine every hour, especially since my TM disk is on Firewire and not built in (had a disk fail with TM volume on same disk - bad idea)
When TM runs, it has to spin up the Firewire external disk, so I just run TM by hand now. I'd like to do this when I go to dinner or to sleep etc
Is there a way to have the Mac system sleep after Time Machine finishes running? An AppleScript perhaps?

I have not seen one, and that is exactly how I use TM. Unmount, turn off the drive. Turn on the drive, the backup volume mounts automatically and TM resumes its scheduled backups.
Your Console logs will reveal the times in which TM attempted to back up but could not find the device:

Can I have several Time Machines in Mavericks?
I have several boot partitions over several disks. Am I allowed to have more than one Time Machine partition - each backing up different drives?
The same question was ever asked against Snow Leopard here, and the answer was no, "You can't have more than one Time Machine destination disk active at any one time."
Is it still the same limit today for Mavericks?
I have 1 x SSD and 3 x HDD, I just want to use one 1TB HD to back up the 500GB SSD, and the 4TB HD to back up the 2TB HD.
Possible please?
Thanks heaps in advance.Called Apple Care Support and confirmed that only one Time Machine backup can be active, in other words, only one destination drive can used to perform Time Machine backup automatically.
Therefore I had to hoose the largest internal HD (4 TB) to back up all other drives (total 2.5 TB).

According to this page: http://support.drobo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/609/~/how-do-i-make-time-machin e-work-with-drobo%3F, some models of Drobo allow you to create partitions. If yours will, that's the way to go.
Then let Time Machine create a Backups.backupdb folder at the top level of the volume if you're connected directly, or it's own sparse bundle if you're connected via network.
If not, and if you're connected via network, you may be able to let Time Machine create the sparse bundle, then limit the maximum size via #A8 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Some possible problems with that (I can't tell since you substituted ***s):
Check the names (of all odd things) of your Mac, network, and Drobo per #C9 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. The names may be a problem even if you let Time Machine create the sparse bundle.
As I read the man page for hdiutil, that command will not create a sparse bundle disk image with a maximum size of 8 TB; it will create a fixed-size disk image of 8 TB.
Since 10.6.0, Time Machine no longer includes the source Mac's MAC address in the name of the sparse bundle. I don't know if having it there is a problem in your setup.
Have you used any other 3rd-party apps (such as Time Machine Editor, or Time Machine Scheduler) to alter Time Machine's default behavior? -

Is it true that Time Machine on Leopard Server will automatically backup all my connected users hard drives? With that in place, there's no need for each workstation to run Time Machine locally with a locally connected Time Machine HDD?
Or does Time Machine on Leopard Server work like normal Time Machine and only backups what on my server's local drives to another server drive?While the server can be set to be the destination for client's needs for a Time Machine destination, so can any other Leopard client computer.
I would need to mention though that I've just opened Leopard Server and am immediately disappointed that Time Machine will not work in Advanced Configuration.
FTP requires Advanced Configuration and so I am stuck without one or the other. -
Time Machine over the Network: Terribly Slow

I've been using Time Machine for over 3 years now with no issues over the network; the destination being a 2TB external Seagate connected to another iMac connected through gigabit ethernet. Everything has been working flawlessly: Every hour Time Machine would MOUNT the sparseimage it created on the disk, BACKUP the data and UNMOUNT the disk image when finished.
Until I upgraded to Lion. The above process is still working per se, however it is PAINFULLY slow! A 50MB backup can take up to AN HOUR! Searching around on the net, advised that there could be an issue with Spotlight as well, however this is not the case for me, since Spotlight finished a new index in under 30 mins. Followed every tutorial I could find on the issue, to no avail..
I then upgraded to Mountain Lion with the hope that the issue will clear itself. Cleared my old backups, resetted Time Machine by erasing its .plist file, restarted my iMac just to make sure and connected Time Machine to the network share anew, creating a "sharing only" account on the host iMac, i.e. the one that has the external HD connected through USB. Still no luck.
I painfully realize that I still have the same issue. While backing up, network traffic is under 100KB, and activity monitor does not show any backupd or mds or any similar processes taking anything over 3% of CPU time.

Tries on the other iMac (also running 10.8.2) and things are exactly the same: Image creation takes almost half an hour, and copying crawls at under 1MB/min. While time machine image is mounted and Time Machine is "backing up", accessing ANY disk on the host Mac is VERY slow. Seems like something hogs up appleshare when Time Machine is in use. Mind you, there is insignificant network traffic as seen by Activity Monitor, as well as insignificant CPU usage while backing up.
Stopping backup and using tmutil to set the Time Machine destination to the mounted image as mounted by Finder, solves the issue again, revving up Time Machine throughput to over 20MB/sec! There is also no issues acessing the other Mac as well, under this scenario.
Up to this point, the only way I have managed to use Time Machine over a networked external HD is through the NAS server. Both configurations where I am using a Mac running 10.8.2 as a server of the external disk have failed with very low throughput while backing up. Something must be wrong in 10.8.2's afp when Time Machine is mounting the image by itself.
I may need to remind you that I have been successfully backing up to the external HD for 4 years now; something broke a few months after the client iMac was upgraded to Lion and at the time when the host iMac was upgraded to Mountain Lion. Will try to locate a Mac running some later OS X version to do some more testing.
Also reminding that I have used two distinctive iMacs and two external HD drives for my tests so far. The client iMac has remained the same, however 10.8.2 has been reinstalled on it a couple of times. Have also used an afp-enabled NAS server which worked fine with Time Machine. -

I really don't get it; I bet both times the mounted Volume runes under the same protocol, AFP via TCP, why is it behaving so strangely when auto-mounted by Time Machine?
Next, I read about tmutil has been added to Lion upwards and that setting a mounted disk image as destination is now supported by TM. So I went on and mounted the image via the Finder, set the mounted Volume as the time machine destination via tmutil and gave the backup a try. The process went away really fast, was extremely pleased!
However: As soon as the backup finishes, the Volume EJECTS and TM reports that the next backup is to be made "when the backup disk is connected"! It will NOT mount the image by its own, neither to backup or to access old backups. But wait, there's more: Be selecting "Backup now" via the TM menu item, the Volume MOUNTS INSTANTLY and the backup takes place, with no issues whatsoever!
What I need is a TM that backs up quickly over the network and mounts its disk automatically.

1. Why is the TM-mounted volume so slow? Mounting the same volume through the Finder works blazing fast! Is there something special in the way TM mounts its volumes?
2. Is there a proper way to force TM to start an automatic backup, when the backup volume is not mounted? It used to work when the destination was the network volume, but does not work when the destination is set to the sparsebundle volume which inside the network volume. -
How do I make Lion Server support more than one Time Machine disk?
Under Snow Leopard Server, I had two disks set up for Time Machine backups. This came about as I'm running a Mac Mini with the 500 GB internal drives which turned out to be insufficient for one of the connected Macs which uses a terabyte drive. I then added an external 6 TB drive and made it a Time Machine destination too. Worked beautifully. When I upgraded to Lion Server the external large drive was no longer available for backups and the interface for configuration within Server only allows for one drive to be in use at a time. Any suggestions (short on reverting to Snow Leopard) as to how to re-enable having both drives available for networked Time Machine access?

Before I even realised that the Server app had a setting for TM, I just configured TM backups on my (SL) clients as I had done in SL.
I shared the drive(s) on the server I wanted to use.
For each client, I mounted the appropriate shared drive containing its sparseimage file, then set TM on the client to use that drive.
Then I unmounted the shared drive and started TM.
It mounted the remote drive (without displaying it in Finder) and opened the sparseimage, showing the "Time Machine Backups" volume on the desktop.
So you could use any drive attached to the server to backup any client.
It worked fine for me.
In the end, I changed my clients to use the (single) shared "Backups" volume which Server.app creates because I can fit all my stuff on one drive.

External hard drive becomes "read only" and won't let Time Machine back up
I have an external hard drive for back up, and it has been working fine until recently.
There is a version of 10.6.6 loaded on it also.
The back up will fail every few days. When I do some checking, the back up drive is "read only" but I am not able to switch it to read/write. I cannot repair it with Disk Utility as the repair buttons are grayed out.
I can run DiskWarrior and it will fix it, but it runs super slow and takes all the memory to do it. I can barely use my e mail while it's running.
Anyone know what's going on?System log says:
3/27/11 8:01:19 AM com.apple.backupd-auto[1559] Not starting scheduled Time Machine backup - time machine destination not resolvable.
It's read only because:
A: I cannot do repairs under Disk Utility, the buttons are grayed out.
B: I right click and "Get Info" and if I click on the lock icon, nothing happens.
C: The disk is not listed in the Time Machine backups.
I will try to take better notes the next time it happens and give you the exact messages.
There is another drive daisy chained to this external drive which holds my music. The music drive does not have a Mac OS installed on it and is only for storage. It works properly. -
Time Machine backup disappears when iMac sleeps
Tried finding this topic but could not find the specifics. I have an Intel iMac running 10.6.7 and I use a Mercury enclosure with a Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATA for Time Machine backup, connected with FireWire. Every time my Mac goes to sleep overnight, the next morning, the Time Machine icon disappears from the desktop. It's been disconnected, because when I run Check Time Machine, the log reads thusly:

Occasionally I'll get the error message on the Mac that a device has been "improperly disconnected" but most of the time when it sleeps the TM drive icon just goes away (even tho the backup drive is still on).
Any ideas? Can I fix this or have to live with it? Are there alternatives to TM that may work better?

MikeI had the same problem as Bru-Hed, but with a Samsung G3 Station 1 TB with USB-connection. After waking up the MAC the message "improperly disconnected" appeared. Was happy with the solution you gave and changed the power save settings accordingly, the drive holds its power, but....... things did not change. Switching off the MAC and restarting gives no problems with the back-up drive, but after waking up I have to reinstall the back-up drive every time by disconnecting and connecting the USB-connector. After choosing the drive again in Time Machine, everything works properly until the next time the MAC goes asleep......
Any other solution to this problem ?
