Time Machine didn't spot change of back-up disk?

I have been running Time Machine onto an external Iomega 500Mb firewire disk without any problems. Three weeks ago I changed to an external Iomega 1Tb firewire disk. Both disks were named by default 'Iomega HDD'. Time Machine seemed happy with the disk change. With the larger back-up disk I was able to remove the exclusions I had previously specified in its Options.
Yesterday I noticed that the contents of the Iomega totalled just over 100Gb despite the iMac hard disk having about 450 Gb on it. Whoops! I had moved to the larger Iomega disk because the 500Gb disk only had space to retain files up to 3 months old.
So I wondered if Time Machine had been confused by the fact that there had been no change in back-up disk name and all it had copied to the disk since the disk change were incremental changes.
Using Disk Utility I erased the contents of the Iomega disk, changed its name and ran Time Machine again. Now it seems to be working correctly and the contents of the iMac disk and the Iomega are the same within 0.2%.
Was Time Machine confused by using 2 disks of the same name or could there have been another cause?

that's how it should be. there are a few things like some temp files and trash which TM never backs up.
Was Time Machine confused by using 2 disks of the same name
it should not have been. it doesn't record the TM disk by name and it should have definitely made a full backup after you changed drives. I've never seen what you describe reported by anybody before. it's now too late to try and figure out what happened but you did the right thing to fix it.
or could there have been another cause?

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into
    Carbon Copy Cloner.

Unfortunately, that drive is long gone, probably back to the mfr. Drives are not returned when they are exchanged. You can go by and ask them, but the chances are slim to none.

  • Time Machine Didn't Back Up

I have two hard drives that are both 2 Terrabytes. One is the main and the other is the Time Machine backup.
I just accidentally overwrote a Flash FLA file, so I selected it and ran Time Machine. There is no backup of this file even though it's on the main hard drive and Time Machine has been backing up every hour for months.
In fact, if I select the folder and check out Time Machine, it doesn't have a backup of the entire folder all the way back to the first week of April.
Yes, Time Machine is backing up, I didn't turn it off.
Does anyone have an idea why Time Machine would arbitrarily decide to not back up this folder? What happens if it runs out of space on the backup hard drive?
    Thank you!

OK, I just checked the preferences and the Main Hard drive was put on the 'don't back up' list somehow. Weird. I must have accidentally did that. I'm backing up NOW!!

I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?
When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups.  It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • Time machine hung on calculating changes (stuck at 99%)

Im experiencing a few problems with time machine which is currently set to back up wirelessly to a time capsule. This has been working great for about a year now never any problems with any backup in the past but over the last day i can not get a backup to complete.
N.B; i have been staying away for the past two weeks as i am at university so i'm aware the first backup will be large with a two week gap. Though this is not usually a problem. The other change is i have recently changed the net work set up, before Time capsule was connected to another router (BT Voyager 205) in bridge mode, now i have a new router (BT home hub 2.0) and have re-configured time capsule to simply join the wireless network for back up and storage purposes.
    Heres what i have tried:
Powering down the time capsule and my laptop several times
unselecting the disk in the time machine options, selecting none and then re-selecting the disk
a full reset of time machine (followed the steps found here; http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2057525)

The combination of symptoms sounds like your backups may be corrupted. Cancel the backup and Repair them per #A5 in the Troubleshooting Tip.
You might want to exclude the drive from Spotlight indexing temporarily, until the backup is done, via +System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.+
And since Time Machine has to do a "deep traversal," connect to the Time Capsule via Ethernet if at all possible -- both the "deep traversal" and actual backup will be faster that way.

Can I use Time Machine on two different Macs to back up to one external drive?
I have one 1T Western Digital backup drive that works well with Time Machine and my MacBook Pro.  I now want to back up my wife's MacBook Air using Time Machine on her Mac and want to know if I can use the same WD external drive or if I need to get a 2nd back up drive?  If I can use one external drive for the two Macs do I need to do something special on the drive or will Time Machine do it automatically?

Yes. You will need to configure Time Machine preferences on each computer to backup to the same drive. Note that you cannot connect the backup drive to both machines at the same time.

Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • Time machine keeps growing in size or backing up a size far greater than it

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere but after hours of searching I still haven't been able to find a resolution which is actually fixing my problem.
When my time machine tries to back up the size of the back up just keeps growing and growing - a problem which has been reported several times but none of the solutions are fixing the problem for me. I've completely reset time machine (disconnect external hard drive, deleting the preferences from ~library/preference, then reset up with my exclusions) and the problem just reappeared.
I've gone through this routine several times and in most cases had no joy. On one occasion I thought the problem had been resolved as it did the initial backup and then a couple of hourly backs and then suddenly it returned a message saying it had insufficient space (trying to back up 470GB but disk only has 300GB available) which was just ridiculous as the full back up size was under 50GB.
I've verified the disk on several occasions and it always comes up clean. In a fit of desperation I've even tried reformatting the external drive with no improvements
I'm at the point of deleting time machine from my laptop and going back to the old Backup program. Can anyone offer any thing else I could try.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Have you Verified your internal HD (and Repaired any externals that are also being backed-up)?
If so, it's probably something damaged or corrupted in your installation of OSX. I'd suggest downloading and installing the 10.6.4 "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Snow Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
If that doesn't help, reinstall OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc (that won't affect anything else), then apply the "combo" again.

When I open Iphoto, my thumbnails are there, but they aren't linked back to the actual photos. I see the original photo files in my HD. Use the Firewire cable and t boot the old Mac's hard drive to the new Mac's desktop and transfer your entire iPhoto folder.
Use Disk Utiliy to erase'format HFS+ Journaled your TimeMachine drive and use the free Carbon Copy Cloner and clone your new boot drive to the external, it's hold option bootable.

Every time my lg g pad 8.3 lte tablet is turned off it reverts the saving email attachment back to internal storage.  Every time I turn on, I change it back to save to SD card.  It stays that way until it is turned off for more than a minute.  If I do a restart, it holds the setting, but loses it when it is shut down for any period of time.  Does anyone else have this issue?  The setting holds for photos taken with camera storing to SD card.  Only the email attachment setting does not hold.

I believe that system has a hall sensor on it to detect when the lid is closed so it can put the system to sleep and/or disable the monitor so it can be used with an external monitor only. If the sensor is marginal or has a bad cable, it may intermittently cut the monitor on and off, and may likewise put the system to sleep. One way to check would be to plug in an external monitor and if the laptop's screen cuts off or doesn't show up, start using the trackpad and press on a non-typing key like the shift key. If the external display suddenly pops and becomes active while the laptop display remains black, it's probably a problem with the sensor or the cable/connection. You might be able to fool the sensor into kicking on and off by moving a magnet over it. It's located on the left had side of the base with the unit opened up, and right over the audio output plug.
I know of some people that put a small magnet right over the hall sensor's location so the laptop display turns off and they use the system with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. If fooling with magnets, make sure they're small and don't get them close to the hard drive because a strong magnet can wipe them out.
I don't know if this will help you much, but it might.
