Time Machine - Disc name change

I began using Time Machine in 2009 on a 500 gig drive. Two weeks ago I began having some slowdown issues on the machine (unrelated to Time Machine). I cloned the drive to an external firewire, erased the internal drive, renamed it (I never did like the old name I gave it) and cloned back to it. This ultimately did not solve my system problems so I took it to the Apple Store. Hardware was all good so they did an erase and install of the up-to-date OS, and I used migration assistant to migrate everything from my external backup (not time machine).
Now when I look at Time Machine, I can only get to the back-ups that are associated with the current drive name. If I go to the backup folder I can see all of those for Name A, B, and C. But Time Machine allows me to only look at C, even though they are sequenced as if they were on the same drive, as they are.
Don't remane the drive!! But having done so, how to I get to those backups, either to look at them or delete them.

It's not the names that changed, it's the UUID changed at least once, when the drive was erased. That means it's treated by OSX (and Time Machine) as a different disk.
To view those backups, see #E3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Laptop doesn't recognise back-ups on my old Time Machine disc

The Apple store switched out my logiboard and RAM. In the process, they re-set my system. I want to re-install files and programmes from Time Machine, but when I plugged in the Time Machine disc, my laptop didn't recognise it. When I went to Time Mchine it wasn't showing any previous back-ups, even though they exist on the disc.
How do I get Time Machine to recognise the back-ups on my Time Machine disc?
    Thank you!

    Hi brat1836
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I presume that the HD in your Laptop is still the same one therefore when you connect the Time Machine drive and then open Time Machine preferences can you click on "Change Disk" and then select the disk that you have attached? My thinking is that by "changing" the disk and re-connecting to the one you have been using it should re-establish the connection.

  • Time Machine: Backup folder changing size when connected to different computers

Can someone please help me wrap my head around why the size of my Time Machine backup folder changes when connected to different computers? I tried to be as thorough as possible.  Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.
I made a backup of my one laptop (MacBook Pro running 10.6.8) before installing Mavericks.  The backup folder size is 258.56 GB and it is on a 1TB WD external.  There are no other computers backed up in this folder.
Last night, I tried to copy the backup folder to another 1TB WD external and ran into the “you can’t do that” message.  After some researching, I came across articles explaining how Time Machine handles HDs and, in order for me to copy my backup folder, the drive I want to copy the folder to needs to have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected.
Okay, so here is my situation: I have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected and journaling is correct on the drive I want to copy the backup folder to.  So I can continue working on my laptop, I want to use a different computer to copy the backup folder from one HD to the other.  The problem I’m having is each computer I own is showing me a different backup folder size O.o.
    (1) The computer I want to use – a Power Mac G5 Quad running 10.4.11 (non intel) – is showing a backup folder size of 592.7 MB, but the HD shows there is 258 GB being used.  When I drag copy, I only get a 592.7 MB backup folder.  For some reason, the backup folder is the only folder acting this way. I compared other folders from the same and different externals and all the sizes match up perfectly no matter the computer they were connected to. How is this possible?
    (2) My second option - Mac Pro (early 2009) running 10.9.4 – is showing a 256.15 GB backup folder size.  Very close, but not 258.56 GB.
    (3) My last option is to use the computer I’m trying to stay away from, the MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.  This is the computer I backed up and is showing me the correct folder size = 258.56GB.  As I mentioned, I'd like to work on my laptop while copying the backup folder using one of my other computers.
I am able to drag and drop from each computer, but the folder size depends on the computer I’m using.  I don’t understand why I can't do a simple drag and drop of a 258 GB folder.
    Many thanks!!

The directory files that you are seeing are not real. They are links to the actual backup files that are stored in a hidden directory on the drive. If you were to look at the same drive on a pc, you would see the folders and you would a list files that are in the folders but the files would all be 0 byte files and Windows will tell you the file is empty because there is nothing there but a link which Windows does not understand.
So the point is you can't just copy the backupd files. The best solution that I know of (and maybe someone else will chime in) for copying them is to mirror the drive with something like Carbon Copy or some other program.

  • Problems in making back up of time machine disc

I need to make a back up of my time machine disc as it has become very noisy.I have purchased a 1TG disc and have tried to copy onto this. Restore from disc utilities did not work so I tried with supadupa. After an hour it repeatedly falls at a particular font file. I have tried to delete this but I get an error message stating that it is not possible to modify a backup file. Is there a work around?
    Help please
    David Thomas

I agree that the easiest option is to start over with Time Machine but then I lose 3 months history
Not if you set the old TM disk off to the side unplugged and turned off. If in the next couple months you discover you need a file that isn't in the new TM data you can always connect the old and search for it. You don't trust it any longer so it isn't like you're going to reformat it and use it for any other purpose, right?

  • Time Machine Disc Unmounts Itself

My Time Machine disc (500 GB FireWire 400) unmounts by itself after 2 to 3 hours. Initially I thought it was the drive. It was always up long enough to get at least one good backup a day so I wasn't too worried about losing much data. Recently, I moved a lot of files (couple hundred GB) and now it can't finish Preparing to Backup before the disc unmounts.
I bought a new disc (2TB FireWire 400) and it is doing the same thing-unmounting after a couple of hours.
However the first disc is now staying mounted (1-1/2 days) with no problems. Obviously it is only the disk defined as the Time Machine disc that unmounts by itself, therefore, it would seem to be a Time Machine problem.
Does anybody know what is going on and, more importantly, how to work around this problem?

Yes, they all drives use Apple Partition Map. I, unfortunately do not have an Intel Mac yet (tears running down my cheek) so GUID is not really an option.
As for #D2, its not slow or hung. In fact, this new drive seems to me MUCH faster the other drives--maybe because it is 7200 RPM instead of 5400 RPM like the others.

Do you see anything useful? What's this about the "UUIDs don't match for volume"? I know it is Unique User ID but I'm not sure what it is telling me. What doesn't match?

  • After clean Install how to assign time machine disc

    Hi,
After a clean install I´m having trouble on assigning my old time machine disc.
I´ve created a new user because I dont know how to import the old one, is that the problem?
    Thank you.
    gfc

"After a clean install" you don't give enough information so I'll take a guess. You installed Leopard now want to restore your backup of TM. You did it wrong. Boot with the Leopard DVD or other means(I use a Leopard boot partition on a hard drive) once you select you language, go to Utility and select restore from TM backup. It will either recognize the disk you have the TM backup on or ask you to connect it.

  • Time Machine backup disk changed name to "3-/9=/=87"

I upgraded to Leopard, and attached a LaCie drive, which Time Machine recognized and used as its backup disk. After formatting the drive, the name was changed to Time Machine Backup disk, but now it has changed to 3-/9=/=87. I tested Time Machine to ensure that it is indeed restoring files, and it is. Any ideas on the name change, and if it will affect Time Machine?
    Many thanks.

    My solution
I found that after trying a few things in the aforementioned thread that in System Preferences > Sharing > Options if I disabled SMB and only enabled AFP on my Mac Pro, which has my Time Machine disk and is accessed over my local network LAN by my Macbook Pro laptop, only then did the Time Machine disk show up in the Time Machine preferences in my remote laptop TM settings.
I suspect my laptop had been connecting to my desktop via SMB instead of AFP and thusly TM would not work.

  • Time Machine, has it changed, if so why ?

Hi all, i have as of yesterday upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion.
When i previously used Time Machine with Lion i used two seperate external Disc Drives at different times and not very regular either, LOL, and Time Machine seemed to cope very well, allowing me to select which disc i wanted each time.
NOW when i used Time Machine with Mountain Lion it confused me to ****, by asking which of the two Drives i wanted to use, if i wanted to use BOTH i had to use each alternately, anyway i selected to use just the one.
So has Mountain Lion completely changed the way Time Machine works, and will i, at a later date be able to use two seperate disc drives again. I didnt fully understand what TM was telling me to do !.

  • Limit Time Machine Disc Space

I am using an external NAS for backup. I backup up a few computers to the array. The array only has one volume right now. After a lot of reading it doesn't seem like you can limit disc space with time machine. Is there a way to limit the disc space TM uses vs. consume the full drive then delete old files? I would prefer not to drop the volume and partion the discs if possible. Any other options?
    Thanks for any assistance.

Not a good choice because the Time Machine backup drive needs to have much more space than the size of the hard drive you backup. If you need storage space, then buy another drive to use.

  • Time machine disk permissions changed to read only

    Somehow, my Time Machine disk permissions have now changed tand my backups are failing;
    The permissions are:
Me - read/write, Staff  - read/write, Everyone - read only. I clicked on the lock and entered my system password, but I cannot change anything.
Then I ran Disk Utilities to repair and verify. Still nothing. I rebooted, logged out, logged back in, etc.
There is plenty of space left on the 2 GB drive. It is a Seagate GoFlex drive. This seems to be a new problems that has not surfaced before. My backups always ran flawlessly.

  • Why does time machine back up change root directory of software?

about a year ago i did a time machine back up of my old macbook pro, then when i came to use a piece of software (native instruments-traktor) it said the root directory had been changed and it couldnt find the file. i had to remove the whole program from my mac and redownload it. then since then had no problems.
now ive just purchased a new macbook today and wanted all my old files and software on it so i did a migration expert with time machine. it seems to have bought most things over.....a few files are missing from logic but again when i went open traktor, again it said root directory changed,,,im not to good with these root directorys so havent got a clue what to do so again ive had to remove the program and redownload it which is a bit of a pain.
any ideas why time machine changes it??

I'm also puzzled because it continually wants to back up some 15MB or more when I've changed nothing
Suggest that you download and install BackupLoupe to find out exactly what is being backed up on each pass.

If you want to change the backup frequency of Time Machine, an application like Time Machine Editor will allow you schedule backups whenever you like. But, you may not need to do this if you can figure out what might be causing the first issue.

If you ever decide to delete Time Machine Editor, be sure to change the backup frequency back to hourly before you delete the application.

  • Time Machine not detecting changes in certain folders

I recently noticed that TM does not update its backup from certain folders any more.
I have a deep sub folder inside ~/Documents, and when I create new folders or files in it, they do not appear in the TM backup. The backup contains, however, lots of files created until Oct 2, 2013. Which means that TM used to backup the contents of this folder.
Now, before you suggest that I have probably disabled backup for this folder - nope:
When I check with tmutil isexcluded for paths of files that didn't get backed up, it says[Included].
When I then added another disk as a second backup destination, that backup does contain the missing files. This proves that the source is accessible and can be backed up. So, any suggestions that the path may contain invalid chars or is too long doesn't apply, either.
Somehow the existing backup got stuck, preventing it from updating these particular folder contents.
The system log does not show any messages related to this.
A disk verification with Disk Utility does not show errors, either.
I could just erase the entire backup and start over, but I would rather not lose my previous versions.
Any ideas how to possibly "reset" or fix the backup so that it backs up the missing files again? I suspect that there's some kind of database that TM maintains to be able to quickly browse its backup folders, and maybe that's corrupt somehow, but I cannot find one.
Here's another idea: If the source disk was modified without OS X watching over it (thru fsevents), e.g. by booting from another system, the TM detects this and starts a complete comparison again, right? I wonder if I can trigger that, and that this will fix the issue.
In the past I've seen knowledgeable people indicate that TM backups can get broken once the backiup gets full and needs deletion of old versions (this is the case here), but no one was able to explain what exactly goes wrong and whether this can be fixed. If you know more details, please comment. I just might write a tool for that in the end
(I am an advanced Mac user and programmer; I am using 10.9.3)

Open the Time Machine preference pane and unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Options button. If there is one particular folder with items that are not being backed up reliably, add it to the list of excluded items. If there are many such folders, add your home folder to the list, or add a whole volume (i.e., what Apple calls a "disk.") Save the changes.
Start a backup, or wait for one to happen automatically. When it's done, open the preference pane again and remove the exclusion(s) you made earlier. Back up again and see whether there's a change.

  • Time machine says identity changed.

It proposes to erase the whole disk. How can I start time machine ağain without erasing the whole disk?

    Hi metinus,
There are a number of possible reasons why Time Machine would give that error message. They are detailed in the following article -
OS X Mavericks: If a message says the identity of the backup disk has changed

  • Time Machine icon unexpectedly changed

How do I get the TM drive to display the TM icon, instead of the default Firewire one? After restoring the original icons after I had changed them, TM only shows the default Firewire icon. Is there a way to fix this?

In the TM preferences, turn off and then turn on Time Machine and then reselect the drive. It will bring up the icon again.
