Time Machine Disc Unmounts Itself

My Time Machine disc (500 GB FireWire 400) unmounts by itself after 2 to 3 hours. Initially I thought it was the drive. It was always up long enough to get at least one good backup a day so I wasn't too worried about losing much data. Recently, I moved a lot of files (couple hundred GB) and now it can't finish Preparing to Backup before the disc unmounts.
I bought a new disc (2TB FireWire 400) and it is doing the same thing-unmounting after a couple of hours.
However the first disc is now staying mounted (1-1/2 days) with no problems. Obviously it is only the disk defined as the Time Machine disc that unmounts by itself, therefore, it would seem to be a Time Machine problem.
Does anybody know what is going on and, more importantly, how to work around this problem?

Yes, they all drives use Apple Partition Map. I, unfortunately do not have an Intel Mac yet (tears running down my cheek) so GUID is not really an option.
As for #D2, its not slow or hung. In fact, this new drive seems to me MUCH faster the other drives--maybe because it is 7200 RPM instead of 5400 RPM like the others.
Here is a sample of the widget logs. They're all pretty much the same:

I am not ejecting the disk. It ejects when no one is home. Its working when I leave and ejected when I get home.
Do we need to go to the logs? Here is a sample portion of the system log from yesterday

Do you see anything useful? What's this about the "UUIDs don't match for volume"? I know it is Unique User ID but I'm not sure what it is telling me. What doesn't match?

  • Problems in making back up of time machine disc

I need to make a back up of my time machine disc as it has become very noisy.I have purchased a 1TG disc and have tried to copy onto this. Restore from disc utilities did not work so I tried with supadupa. After an hour it repeatedly falls at a particular font file. I have tried to delete this but I get an error message stating that it is not possible to modify a backup file. Is there a work around?

I agree that the easiest option is to start over with Time Machine but then I lose 3 months history
Not if you set the old TM disk off to the side unplugged and turned off. If in the next couple months you discover you need a file that isn't in the new TM data you can always connect the old and search for it. You don't trust it any longer so it isn't like you're going to reformat it and use it for any other purpose, right?

  • After clean Install how to assign time machine disc

    Hi,
After a clean install I´m having trouble on assigning my old time machine disc.
I´ve created a new user because I dont know how to import the old one, is that the problem?
    Thank you.
    gfc

"After a clean install" you don't give enough information so I'll take a guess. You installed Leopard now want to restore your backup of TM. You did it wrong. Boot with the Leopard DVD or other means(I use a Leopard boot partition on a hard drive) once you select you language, go to Utility and select restore from TM backup. It will either recognize the disk you have the TM backup on or ask you to connect it.

  • Laptop doesn't recognise back-ups on my old Time Machine disc

The Apple store switched out my logiboard and RAM. In the process, they re-set my system. I want to re-install files and programmes from Time Machine, but when I plugged in the Time Machine disc, my laptop didn't recognise it. When I went to Time Mchine it wasn't showing any previous back-ups, even though they exist on the disc.
How do I get Time Machine to recognise the back-ups on my Time Machine disc?
    Thank you!

    Hi brat1836
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I presume that the HD in your Laptop is still the same one therefore when you connect the Time Machine drive and then open Time Machine preferences can you click on "Change Disk" and then select the disk that you have attached? My thinking is that by "changing" the disk and re-connecting to the one you have been using it should re-establish the connection.

  • Limit Time Machine Disc Space

I am using an external NAS for backup. I backup up a few computers to the array. The array only has one volume right now. After a lot of reading it doesn't seem like you can limit disc space with time machine. Is there a way to limit the disc space TM uses vs. consume the full drive then delete old files? I would prefer not to drop the volume and partion the discs if possible. Any other options?
    Thanks for any assistance.

Not a good choice because the Time Machine backup drive needs to have much more space than the size of the hard drive you backup. If you need storage space, then buy another drive to use.

  • Time Machine Drive Ejecting Itself--Spotlight culprit?

    Hi,
I have to backup my MBP ASAP so that I can take it to Apple for repairs. When I first got the computer, I thought both my external drives were ejecting randomly so I never thought that Time Machine was the issue. The other hard drive proved to have a faulty wire and solved that problem, but I still can't seem to determine why my Time Machine drive keeps randomly ejecting. I searched this and various other forums for an answer and narrowed down my problems to my antivirus and spotlight indexing. At first, the harddrive would last anywhere from 0mins-45mins before being ejected. I began checking the console logs and notices some instances where my antivirus was running at the same moment. I disabled scanning of the TM backup and saw the biggest improvement in how long the drive was able to stay connected and make backups before ejecting. It stayed on for close to 6-7 hours.
Then, it ejected randomly again and I checked the console messages and saw spotlight returned some indexing errors. This time the ejection made the drive unreadable and I had to reformat. I backed up again and it kept ejecting itself early on in the backup process with the same spotlight errors. I added the entire drive to Spotlight's privacy list, and it managed to complete the entire backup. The drive then stayed connected without ejecting for another 7-9 hours the next day without any random ejects before the spotlight errors struck again. The drive is still listed in the privacy and it is still excluded from antivirus scanning. I have repaired the disk several times and gotten the "Appears to be OK" message. I even reformatted the drive and did another complete backup hoping that would take care of any corrupt Spotlight indexing. I have also rebuilt the entire index for both Spotlight on the internal and external drive. At this point, I need to run the backup as I am getting my hard drive swapped. What I am most concerned about is, even if I get another backup successfully on the drive, will I run into any problem using Setup/Migration assistant (random ejects, freezes, corrupt data) when its time to transfer my info back to the new install of OS X and be left without my data altogether? I also just need to this work... as what is the point of a backup solution, if you can't rely on it to make it through a day without crashing..
Below is the latest log file from Console. Any help will be greatly appreciated as I have went through the same steps that proved successful for others who had the same issue before me.

Unless you're running Windoze on your Mac, you may not need any anti-virus software at all. See Thomas Reed's [Mac Virus Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/macvirus]. But yes, keep your TM drive excluded.
The drive then stayed connected without ejecting for another 7-9 hours the next day without any random ejects before the spotlight errors struck again.
Excluding your TM drive from Spotlight doesn't stop all indexing of it: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8991.html

The backups will probably be ok, but if your internal HD is corrupted, as it seems to be, that corruption may be transferred to them.

Now that's quite odd, indeed: the /Library/Logs folder is supposed to be +*excluded automatically+* from backups! That's controlled by a special plist deep inside OSX, so it's been altered, corrupted, or ignored, which is not a good sign.
Ordinarily, I'd suggest downloading and installing the 10.6.4 "combo" update, but that may not be enough -- you may need to reinstall OSX, too, and depending on what's wrong with your system, you may not have time, and if your system is misbehaving, it may not work anyway. If you want to, the info and download are available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

That's from the mds process, used by both Spotlight and Time Machine.

Another indication of possible corruption in your installation of OSX.

It's always a good idea to keep secondary backups, since all hardware fails, sooner or later, and no backup app is perfect. Given the apparent corruption of your installation of OSX, I'd recommend that even more strongly. See #27 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for some suggestions.
Sorry not to have better news or more concrete suggestions.

  • HT203176 My start-up disc is nearly full.  I have another disc, an ex-time machine disc, that is available.  How do I make it known to the system so it can be used?

I am getting a message that my 250 gb hard drive is nearly full.  I have deleted many files without making much difference.  I am unable to update any software now.  I have a 500 GB drive that was used for Time Machine but is now available to use.  I have cleared the data from it, now how do I make this drive available to the system?

    You can't.
Move some more data to that other drive to free up space on the startup drive.
Don't forget to empty the Trash.

  • Time Machine - Disc name change

I began using Time Machine in 2009 on a 500 gig drive. Two weeks ago I began having some slowdown issues on the machine (unrelated to Time Machine). I cloned the drive to an external firewire, erased the internal drive, renamed it (I never did like the old name I gave it) and cloned back to it. This ultimately did not solve my system problems so I took it to the Apple Store. Hardware was all good so they did an erase and install of the up-to-date OS, and I used migration assistant to migrate everything from my external backup (not time machine).
Now when I look at Time Machine, I can only get to the back-ups that are associated with the current drive name. If I go to the backup folder I can see all of those for Name A, B, and C. But Time Machine allows me to only look at C, even though they are sequenced as if they were on the same drive, as they are.
Don't remane the drive!! But having done so, how to I get to those backups, either to look at them or delete them.

It's not the names that changed, it's the UUID changed at least once, when the drive was erased. That means it's treated by OSX (and Time Machine) as a different disk.
To view those backups, see #E3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Why does my time machine backup turn itself off all the time?

This has happened to me several times that I notice that the icon on the menu bar is grayed out for the backup... I just noticed that again for the 10th time, and that the last backup was on December 30th, but I never turned off time machine.  I was wondering if this was a glich in the system?  Has anyone else has this problem? Never had it before till last year...
    Thanks!

No, I've not seen that posted here before.
A clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  The widget may not go back to Dec 30, so you may have to use the Console app to look at your older logs, per the pink box there.
Either way, see if you can find the Dec 30 backup. If it says it completed successfully, look for the next attempt -- if so, copy and post all the messages here.
If not, keep an eye on it, and the next time it happens, the widget should show something that will help pin it down.

  • TC name must be short, or Time Machine/disc access will not work

I painfully learned, after a few hours on my own, followed by 50 minutes on hold waiting for a great customer support guy, the following:
When you install your TC, it will take the name of the computer from which it is being configured. "John Doe's Time Capsule." If you have a long computer name, or otherwise end up with greater than 23 (I think he said 23, maybe 26) characters, TC will not work correctly. I hope this saves someone some grief.

Open up your console application and peruse the error logs (i.e. type console in spotlight). If you see stuff like this, you should probably change your TC's name:

  • I have reinstalled my OS without time machine (using the disc). I want to restore some pictures in the iPhotos which are already in the time machine i was using previously. How can I restore iPhoto from previous time machine?

My mac book was incredibly slow. When I went to Mac store, they asked me to reinstall the OS with CD and not with the time machine. I reinstalled the operating system. But when I opened the applications, all those started as fresh applications as usual. I have the backup of all other data in another hard disc. But unfortunately, I forgot to copy the photos before reinstallation. I have those photos in my time machine back up. But when I opened time machine, it started like a fresh (very new) time machine and it started backing up my present OS (the reinstalled one). I cannot open the previous time machine, which is in the same hard drive. I wish to open the previous time machine to get the photos which are backed up previuosly. When opened the time machine disc (manually by clicking the icon), i can see all the thigs which I had previously in my macbook. But unfortunately, i cannot access those through time machine! Can anybody help me please?

As William says, yes. Just a hint: use a different name for the new disk, so you're sure which is which.
Also If I wish to copy the old content somewhere else to archive, then free up the drive for other use, would that content still be accessible to Time Machine if I needed it?
Also yes, but if you're on Leopard, you cannot use the Finder to copy the backups. See #18 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Cannot restore some files/folders from Time Machine Backup

When I try and restore files or folders from my Pictures folder, which is a sub folder of my user I get the message "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access xxxx". As far as I can tell this has only just started to happen because I've recovered stuff from the folder since I bought the machine in July. Yesterday I deleted an old Time Machine backup folder from the Time Machine disc. This caused empty trash to go berserk - the "files to delete" count went negative and I had to stop/restart the empty trash command about 20 times before it sorted itself out. Maybe this has screwed some permissions somewhere? I have run disc utility and repaied permissions on my hard drive and verified the TM drive. Still no joy. The permissions for Pictures look OK. Anyone any ideas?

Probably you corrupted your Time Machine Backup by manually deleting older backups- that is dangerous.

Now, I have erased the external drive and gone back to using my old backup software (Chronosync). The external drive is working great so I don't think that is the problem.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup.
