Time Machine Disk is full
Hi everyone:
My Time Machine disk is a 1TB drive on my Mac Pro. It backs up my other three 250 GB Disks on the same computer (one being my Macintosh HD) . It is full and is starting to erase the oldest backups (from 2 years ago). My understanding is that I really have nothing to fear about losing anything since my Time Machine disk is clearly much larger than the 3 Disks it its backing up. Am I thinking right? Is it possible I could lose anything that wasn't already on any of the other Drives? My apologies if this question has been answered before but I looked for my specific question and didn't find it answered.

Hi,
A couple weeks ago I cloned my MacBook Pro and forgot about it and went to bed. Is it possible that it got backed up to my Timemachine hard disk as a separate Mac? If yes, does anyone know how I may find and remove it? I've also left this clone and a separate installation on another partition plugged in though booted from my internal hard drive. Could that have been backed up too and how would I remove that?
I'm asking because my MBP has a 320 gb hard disk and the Time Machine back up disk is 1 TB and had something like 600 GB available a few weeks ago.
Last night it stopped the back up and said the disk was full and sure enough there's less than 1 GB available.
I've never run into a full Time Machine disk, and I don't want to toss away old stuff for multiple copies of the past few weeks so if anyone can advise what to do to trouble shoot I will be grateful.Ok. After poking around I discovered the two external partitions did get backed up. So I went into System prefs > Time Macine and turned them off.
Now the question is will Time Machine delete them automatically or do I have to go hunting for them to delete them? -

I just got this message again:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
This backup is too large for the backup disk.
The backup requires 630.92 GB but only 466.66 GB are available.
So the question is, why does it not erase the oldest backup as it is supposed to?

I have an alert set up on a Mac Mini server to notify me if a disk gets over 50% full. Unfortunately, this is warning me now that the Time Machine disk is getting over 50% full, which is to be expected. Is there a way to set it so I am only notified if the system disk is getting full?

My external Time Machine disk is almost full. I know TM is supposed to erase the oldest back-ups to make room for newer ones but is it safe for me to just erase the back-ups from 2 or so years ago to make room for TM as well as anything else I might want to add to this external drive?
Time Machine makes room for backups as necessary in a complex and sophisticated fashion, and it's not something to mess with lightly. However there are instructions at the bottom of this link which tell you how you can. Why do I have time machine disk problem after closing and later reopening clamshell.
I consistently see the following after closing and later reopening my Macbook Pro (5,1). I have to unplug and replug my Time Machine USB drive.
The only thing new is Mountain Lion. The Time Machine disk has 229 GB free of 1.5 TB. I never had to unplug this drive under Lion.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I ran disc repair on Time Machine Drive yesterday, but it found nothing.

Time Machine is intended to be left enabled always whether a backup drive is connected or not. What Time Machine cannot handle properly is a situation where the backup drive loses power for whatever reason. Time Machine treats this, as does the OS, as an improper disconnect of an external drive without being properly ejected. This in turn throws Time Machine a little bit of a loop.
For you I would suggest not using Time Machine. Instead use a third-party backup utility that you can either schedule or run manually as you wish. They will work with the same drive you have used for Time Machine, but you will need to first erase the Time Machine drive using Disk Utility. Please DO NOT try dragging the Time Machine backups to the Trash.
Here are some good backup utilities you can try:
Suggested Backup Software
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate. Each one can be used for a trial period. No need to pay for one until you've decided on which one you like best. I, for example, use Carbon Copy Cloner but please don't take that as a recommendation over the others. It's just my preference. All can be operated manually or can be set up to backup on a schedule you determine. Some can even be set up to backup as soon as the backup drive is connected.

Time Machine disk not recognised
My G5 PowerMac has been away for repair; it's needed a new logic board. It was away for nearly two weeks. Now Time Machine doesn't recognise the external drive which contains the Time Machine backups from last November. It wants to do a backup from scratch and says there isn't enough space on the disk.
Is there any way of getting the Time Machine to recognise the previous backups and start adding to them?
I'll be very grateful for any advice.To TM, it is a different computer. The logic board includes your Ethernet "Mac Address", which is a unique number that TM uses to be sure it knows which Mac is which.
There is a fairly elaborate way to attempt to persuade TM that the existing backups really are for your "new" Mac: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
It is very easy for the inexperienced user of Terminal (and the not-so-inexperienced as well) to make an error with Terminal, get no error message, and have it not work, so try it at your own risk.
But there is an alternative: hold down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar. The +Enter Time Machine+ option changes to +Browse Other Time Machine Disks.+ That's a bit misleading, but it will take you into the normal TM interface where you can see and restore from the old set of backups.
Even if you're successful with the Terminal work, your first backup with the new logic board may be a full one -- every file and folder on your system. If TM decides to do that, you cannot prevent it.
So if your TM disk/partition isn't at least 2.5 times the size of the data it's backing-up, your best bet may be to just erase it with Disk Utility and let TM start over. -
Time Machine disk and Airport Extreme issues
I have a portable USB drive I use as my Time Machine disk. It works great, but only when I manually mount the disk.
I recently got an Airport Extreme, which allows me to mount a disk off of it. So, I figure I'll mount my USB Time Machine disk there so Time Machine backs up hourly.
Well, the first issue I get is that Time Machine tells me the disk isn't properly formatted! Odd, since I've had it configured via the app for backups. I go into preferences to select a disk, and I choose my Time Machine disk. When I next tried to run a backup, it indicated I don't have enough room on the disk, requiring ~106 GB .... almost as if it thought it hadn't done any backups before and was going to run a full one.
I dismounted the drive from the Airport Extreme and hooked it back up locally, and I get the same results within Time Machine.
I also noticed a new file on the root of my Time Machine, with a .sparsebundle extension. Is this related in any way?
Anyway, what can I do, short of a full reset of my Time Machine disk, to get it working through my Airport Extreme?Me again ...
I hooked up my USB TM disk again to my Airport Extreme. I don't see it as a mounted drive in my Sidebar. However, I see it under the Devices on my sidebar, under "my" computer, then Time Machine Backups, then a backups.backupdb folder.
To start fresh with TM backups I'll need to erase the drive. From what I see, do I just delete the 'backups.backupdb' folder and its contents? -
New Mavericks Install-Time Machine disk causes Wifi failure.
Just recently upgraded to Mavericks and have encountered a strange problem. When my Time Machine external disk is attached, my machine (MacBook Pro 15 Intel 2.53 i5) refuses to connect to my home Wifi (Airport Extreme), giving an error message wanting me to run Wifi Diagnostics. All other devices connect normally to this router. I noticed this morning that when I eject the Time Machine disk, it immediately connects to the Wifi without a problem.

What happens when the Time Machine drive is full?
I'm on my second iMac. My first one (G5, 1984) died, and I replaced it early 2010 with an Intel mac. The transition when exceedingly well largely due to Time Machine. I just hooked the Time Machine drive to the new system, and I was soon back up running!
My home folder has 70GB of data. The Macintosh drive has 105GB of data and 395GB free. The Time Machine drive has 220GB used and 30GB free.
1. What happens when the Time Machine drive is full?
2. Do I have control over what backups get deleted?
3. If lightning strikes twice, will I still be able to restore my Intel mac like my G5 mac, even if backups get deleted?
4. Is there anyway to control what backups/backup files get deleted?
5. Any other thoughts?

Do you mean all of them? The entire Backups.backupdb folder?
That's a large mess. First, even a normal delete will take a very long time, as there are probably hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of files. Your best bet by far is to simply erase them with Disk Utility -- that will only take a few moments. If your TM drive has a single partition, see #1 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html]. If there are other partition(s) on the drive, see #2 there.
If not, and you only deleted some of the folders, you have a different, worse problem. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks: +*Never move, change, or delete anything in your backups via the Finder or Terminal.+*
You shouldn't have to delete backups at all, since Time Machine will do that automatically when the disk/partition gets full. But you can do it without harm via Time Machine. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
A normal delete will take a very long time, as there are probably tens or hundreds of thousands of items, each of which must be individually deleted. A secure delete will take much, much longer, as each deleted file must be overwritten with zeros. -
Time Machine randomly performing full backups instead of incremental
I've been using a Time Capsule since October 2009 with my 13" MBP running Snow Leopard with no issues.
A few weeks ago, I noticed Time Machine decided to do a full 160GB backup, which then filled the Time Capsule and then deleted older backups. It then kept trying to do full backups every single time, resulting in the error 'Not enough space'.
I archived the backups from the Time Capsule, disabled Time Machine and completely erased the Time Capsule.
I set up Time Machine again and it's been working for about a week, but it's doing the same thing again - trying to do another large HD sized backup of 160GB or so (the amount of data my drive has).
I have noticed in the logs the following line
*17/02/2010 13:36:16 com.apple.backupd[946] Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: HD*
Which seems to appear as Time Machine starts to do it's full backup.
Any ideas? It's getting to the point that Time Machine is becoming unusable as I can't rely on it.Cool, I'll give that a try.
Log files are here. I did rename my machine to remove spaces and punctuation but haven't backed up since then (only a few hours ago).
Should I resume this backup or erase the TC and start again? (I've also renamed the TC network and drive)

Time Machine gives different full backup sizes
After this recent Time Machine update I am no longer able to back up. When Time Machine computes the backup it tells me that it is 320GB, which is larger than my backup drive, so it can't back up. However, when I go into the Time Machine preferences it computes the estimated backup size as 272.52GB. Before this Time Machine update was applied my backups were happening with no issues.

It may be a combination of things: the drive is clearly too small; while it varies widely depending on how you use your Mac, our general "rule of thumb" is that TM needs at least twice the space of the data it's backing-up.
If you're like most of us, the amount of data on your system has been growing.
And apparently Time Machine is doing a full backup, so it just got beyond the capacity of the disk to hold it all.
Looks like I need a larger Time Machine disk.

I have an Xserve, running 10.6 server, where we keep all of our files. It backs up via Time Machine. Many users use the shared drives on the Xserve, and I encourage them to put their files there. We work in a design / production house, so many people collaborate on files. Due to the nature of the business, with frequent design changes, we need to go "back in time" and pull out previous versions of designs, etc. Usually I handle this by remotely accessing the Xserve, starting up time machine, and pulling out the old versions of files from the backups.
However, when I'm not in, I wanted to make this option available to another user, without giving her full access to the server. I discovered the "Browse Other Time Machine" option, and after making my Time Machine disk (actually a rack-mount Mercury Pro RAID array) shared, I was able to mount it on her Mac, also running 10.6. I thought this would be a nice solution.
The problem is, in some directories, when browsing from her computer, Time machine is showing no backups. It's impossible to go back more than a few snapshots with it. Meanwhile, if I do it on the server, everything is fine. So I thought perhaps it was a permissions issue, but I don't want to muck up the permissions on my time machine drive and risk losing everything. I did add her account as a user with read-only access to the time machine drive, and told it to apply to all sub folders. This didn't make any difference.
What is the issue? Is it permissions? Or is my Time Machine too large (6TB) that it can't load all the data over the network? Has anyone encountered this before? Cant find system backup in Time machine disk
I use two Macs, one iMac and one Macbook Pro.
both are being backuped on the same Time Machine, but with different users.
Before changing disk on iMac I made full backup (700GB) and could see the files in the directory and I got no error messages when creating the backup.
I restarted the iMac with CmdR and I now find the Time Machine disks, one for the iMac and one for Macbook Pro. When choosing iMac (where I know there are files in the folder /timemachine imac/imac.sparsebundle/bands) it can not find any system backups and no backups to choose from! For the Macbook Pro backup I can find a lot of didfferent system backups to choose from!
Very annoying as I can see files in the backup folder for iMac in the Synology NAS 212j, Time Machine.
Please help me as I do not have access to my old disk (warranty disk from Apple)!
