Time machine disk keeps working

After a completed backup the WD disk keeps working as if still backing up data. This goes on for some time and when it does stop for a while it restarts again.
It is a WD dual disk in mirrored Raid mode.
Any suggestions as I have erased the backup once and started from scratch with no difference.

Look at this extract from the definitive Time Machine website:

Ciao.

Time Machine does not provide archival storage.
If you delete a file from your disk it will eventually be deleted from your TM backup without any notice to you.
You need a second external disk to use for archival storage.
You also need a third disk for backups of the second disk.

  • Cannot connect my time machine disk

My Mac with OS 10.9.5 (Mavericks?) time machine disk keeps loosing the connection to the disk and I cannot figure out how to reconnec the disk.

Problem solved!  It was actually spotlight service using the time machine backup.  I searched the internet and found some info on this.   I 'forced quit' the process in activity monitor (called 'mds') and it worked....now I was successfully able to eject the time machine backup drive.  Now, it must take days for this to index the drive but, I want to be able to eject my time machine drive whenever it is done backing up so that I can take my macbook to different rooms without having to carry the drive!

  • Time Machine disk ejecting

    Hi guys,
My Time Machine disk keeps ejecting itself.  Once it has ejected itself I cannot write to it or even format it, I usually have to boot Yosemite/Mavericks off a USB and in disk utility there, repartition and format the disk.  It will then backup and be fine, but a few days later it will fail again.
I have tried this with 2 drives, a WD 340gb and a 1TB seagate and get the same results, although the seagate DOES seem to be more temperamental.  I have looked around the net and found threads with these issues but never a total solution.  I know that Linc Davies is an expert on these things so if you're around Linc, any help you could give would be amazing!
I read in one of Lincs previous threads to go to console and then system and filter "backup".  I have done this and dumped the log.  I will paste it below.
I look forward to any help you can offer.
    regards.

  • Is there any way to force time machine to keep retrying after disk i/o error?

a little background to my problem:
i've had a hard drive problem previously, and i managed get all the data off of my mac by trying and retrying to access the same files and also from my working time machine backup. after zeroing out and reformatting my drive and doing a clean install of Mavericks i had everything back up running no problems.
recently, my macbook pro would be stuck and slow in recently imported iphoto pics so i figured my hard drive is really failing this time around
i try to get a time machine backup to save what i can, but after a couple of tries time machine would just stop backing up and in console i would see a disk i/o error.
is there any way to force time machine to keep trying to backup through the disk i/o error so i can save what i can before getting a new drive?
edit: a little more info, i know i have a harddrive error from looking at the console, but when i do a verify disk in disk utility it comes up clean and even after doing a disk repair it comes up clean i still see disk i/o errors in the console.

    See:

Thee can also be a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.sqlite, extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox [[Profiles|profile folder]] to reset the extensions registry.<br />
New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files":

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is an update.

  • Time Machine just stopped working, Disk Repair & Read Only errors

So my TM backups have been running fine for at least six months now.
Today I started to get this error:
    "Disk Repair
The disk "xxxxxx" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible."
    followed by
    "Time Machine Error
The backup volume is read only.
To select a different volume, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine"
I've searched high and low for a solution to no avail.
Here's what I've tried so far.
Attached disk to iMac, repaired the disk. It now verifies with no errors.
Changed permissions on the disk to 644 through terminal as per an Apple article.
Rebooted iMac several times, zapped PRAM.
Anyone have any ideas as to why this is suddenly happening? I would really hate to have to reformat the disk and start from scratch. This is very frustrating, I've changed nothing.
Here's the log from Time Machine Buddy:
    Starting standard backup
    Disk image /Volumes/FreeAgent Drive/Thomas Torrillo’s iMac_002332917af9.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Backup of Thomas Torrillo’s iMac
Backing up to: /Volumes/Backup of Thomas Torrillo’s iMac/Backups.backupdb
    The target volume is read-only.
Backup failed with error: The target volume is read-only.
    Ejected Time Machine disk image.

What to do if Time Machine reports you don't have permission
This was posted in the Apple Discussions by V.K. I have only modified it slightly to be more generic.
The problem seems to be that 10.5.6 changes permissions on a file so that even the root user doesn't have write peivileges. I have no idea why they did this. The workaround suggested in [an]other post will probably work, too, but i did something less drastic. Instead of deleting the file I changed permissions on it, and it worked just fine. An added benefit is that the permission change seems to stick, so you don't have to delete the file every time you change a drive.
[Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt [enter] the following command:
    sudo chmod 644 /volumes/"TM drive name"/.xxxxxxxxxxxx
The name of the file .xxxxxxxxxxxx is based on the MAC address of your computer and will be different for every computer. Put the name of the TM drive in the above and keep the quotes.
You'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see) which is normal.
This was edited by Kappy just for cleanup.
Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • My time machine is not working and the disk utilities cant repair it and is asking me to format the drive again. How can I backup the files before formatting the drive so that I don't lose my files?

    Hi
My time machine hard drive has stopped working after the latest update and the Disk Utilities says,:
Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
How can I back up my files before reformatting when I can't even open the drive's folder?
    Thanks for the help.

Id also like to know if Powerpc software will be supported? I have C&C Generals on disc but it doesnt run now mavericks is installed?!
    Annoying!

Regarding time machine, it probably took a full backup after you put mavericks on. To investigate, open Console, select "All Messages" and type "backup" (without the quotes). It will then only show you backup-related messages. If you're not sure how to read those, copy them and paste them into a reply here; we can investigate the situation.
I don't know anything about your PPC software issue, sorry.

  • Time Machine Won't Work - Using a BOOT DISK and separate DATA DISK Drives

Ok, so I'm up and running the my new MacPro.
I did a boot drive and then I did a 3 drive "Data Volume" RAID for increased performance and am getting about 235mb speeds on the "data" drive.
Everything is great... except... TIME MACHINE doesn't work. I'm a backup fanatic, so I have TIME MACHINE to save "versions" of my files, plus I use SUPER DUPER, DROBO's etc.
So, I've tried deleting the network preferences file in the library folder and restarting, but to no avail.
Basically, if I open TIME MACHINE PREFS, it says backup failed and I cannot "change" the drive. It's like the MAC doesn't see if through the TIME MACHINE PREFERENCES, but the Time Capsule Disk is "mounted" in the finder and I can copy files directly.
    Anyone have any advice?
    Thanks!

Open Airport Utility and check that you have the TC properly configured with the drive shared and file sharing enabled. The TC drive must mount on the Desktop. It should also be partitioned using GUID partition map and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. You might consider using Airport Utility to erase the TC disk.
I believe the TC user manual should provide information on how to set up the TC to use with TM.

  • Time Machine will NOT work with Airport Disks!

It looks like Time Machine will not work with Airport Disks after all. All references to Airport have been removed from the Time Machine page:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/timemachine.html
It also specifically says: "You can designate just about any HFS+ formatted FireWire or USB drive connected to a Mac as a Time Machine backup drive. Time Machine can also back up to another Mac running Leopard with Personal File Sharing, Leopard Server, or Xsan storage devices."
Surely, they would have included the Airport Extreme Base Station in this list if it was supported.
I really hope there will be another firmware update for the AEBS which will bring compatibility with Time Machine, because Time Machine was the only reason for me to buy an AEBS. (I only use it as a small backup server, I don't even have wireless networking enabled. There were other solutions, e.g. from Synology, which are faster and more reliable than AEBS disk sharing, but Synology stated their network drives would not be compatible with Time Machine.)

Here's how you can potentially use your AirDisk with TimeMachine (beware that YMMV), but it should work as it works with every other "unsupported" device.
    1) Mount your AirDisk so it appears on your Mac
    2) Open Terminal.app
    3) change directories to the AirDisk's root folder located in "/Volumes"
    ie: cd "/Volumes/AirDisk Name"
    4) execute this command to "bless" the drive to be used with time machine:
    touch .com.apple.timemachine.supported
    5) Start TimeMachine and if all went well, it should recognize your AirDisk drive and use it for TM.
This should also work on NFS shares, SMB shares, AFP shares, basically anything. It has worked up until the last developer seed, so unless they yanked this at the last minute, it should still work.
Now, the reason why Apple removed this feature may be due to the unreliability of the AirDisk, so be cautious.

  • HT201250 My 10.7.3 Time Machine won't work with external disks. Worked fine with Snow Leopard, and even Lion 10.7.1

My 10.7.3 Time Machine won't work with external disks. Worked fine with Snow Leopard, and even Lion 10.7.1
I have tried everything, even buy new external disk from different manufacture.
If I cant get a fix soon, I am downgrading back to SnowL.

Still no luck. I tried all the tricks, reconfiguring TM (remove selected disk option, and re-setting it, and trying different disks). Tried new combo updater, and the newer TM update after that. Tired two different disks too (one is my older firewire WD MyBook 1TB, and my brand new 3tb Seagate GoFlex USB... either one plugged into back of computer - no intermediary devices). I did get the TM buddy wiget and it produced the following log, from the last attempt, where I setup lots of exclusions so that backup quantity was small (under 10gb). Still it failed to complete. Here is that log, for what it is worth:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/TM-Disk/Backups.backupdb
9.56 GB required (including padding), 911.15 GB available
Waiting for index to be ready (101)
Copied 0 files (0 bytes) from volume Mac HD.
    Backup canceled.
To prove a point, I will take these disks are run them on my other Tiger and Snow Leopard laptops to prove TM works fine on those with these disks. But I fear the only options are to either have my tech re-install LION... or just have him reinstall SL instead. Im at wits end.

  • Started using my Time Capsule as a base station; now Time Machine won't work

    Dear community,
I had been using my Time Capsule just for Time Machine backups, but I recently switched to using it as an internet base station as well. Now I can connect to internet via Wi-Fi, but Time Machine no longer works (it throws a "backup disk cannot be found" error). I assume this is related to the fact that the name of my Wi-Fi network differs from the name that my Time Machine used to have back when it was only my backup disk. Does anyone have any ideas for how to get Time Machine working again, hopefully without losing all my backup history? Thanks for your help.
    I am using a Time Capsule (circa 2012) and a late-2011 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.9.3.

This is just typical Mavericks behaviour.
You must find the hard disk for it. Poor Mavericks cannot find its own tail let alone a network device as complex as a hard disk.
Does anyone have any ideas for how to get Time Machine working again, hopefully without losing all my backup history?
Let me say, that killing your backups is harder than simple resets or changing functions. In fact the only way to wreck the backups is erase them deliberately from airport utility, or have TM working over a faulty link and corrupt them.
The issue is simply that the hard disk is lost. And Bo Peep doesn't know where to find it.
Step in and mount the hard disk manually.
In Finder.. use Go, Connect to server.
    Type in AFP://TCname.local
Where TCname is the actual network name of the TC. (Hopefully you are now using short names with no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. in which case network name = name. If not then you need to translate the name to the network name.
So Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule which you name it in the utility comes out.
fred_blogs_airport_time_capsule as network name. Spaces and apostrophe are illegal.
Let me encourage you to go back to the airport utility and rename the TC something sensible like TCgen4 (it is a gen4) and use TCwifi for the wireless name. Then the network name is at least something like the actual name.
So in my case I would type in AFP://TCgen4.local
Local is the default domain and using it can also help.
    The caps are irrelevant.
The other and better way of doing it in Mavericks is use IP address of the TC if it is static. ie if the TC is main router it will have IP 10.0.1.1 by default.
    Then you type AFP://10.0.1.1
You will be asked for the password.. type that in and keep it in your keychain.
(BTW you can discover the actual names of everything via the netstat scan from network utilities. In Mavericks Network Utilities has gone walkabout, so you will need to search for it in finder). You should see the actual network names of everything listed here. Along with MAC address and other info.
Now you can reset TM and point it at the TC disk which is already open in finder.
See info on TM reset here.
    A4 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Please note when TM starts up it will show it is going to do a full backup.. this will not happen. It will discover the existing backup and then simply do incremental. (I hope!!) Nowadays with Mavericks nothing can be certain.
    Good Luck.. !
Sorry I have made it over complicated.. Early morning here and not suitably caffeinated yet.
If you run into trouble post back.

  • Time Machine, Disk Utility, and clearing out corrupted snapshots

Hi, all. I've been having some troubling issues with Time Machine and could use your collective insight.
I have a 500GiB external USB2 disk that I've been using for Time Machine since December (the oldest snapshot in Backups.backupdb is named 2007-12-13-222250). Everything worked fine until sometime in late January, when Time Machine decided to ax 2/3 of my Applications directory. Time Machine's logging is terse, so I wasn't able to determine what caused the corruption. The fact that this error wasn't caught and flagged by Time Machine bothers me.
Especially because I discovered this in the process of needing to recover from a crash on my laptop's hard drive -- I had to roll back to a previous, complete snapshot to get all my applications back.
After that I had to engage in some jiggery-pokery to get Time Machine to re-snapshot everything, but things proceeded normally until I received my new copy of DiskWarrior 4.1 last night (although DiskWarrior is an innocent bystander here). I tried to use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory on the Time Machine disk, but it failed before trying to write anything.
(For those who care: after some back and forth with Alsoft tech support, we determined this was likely because my Time Machine volume has 6.2GB of catalog data, and DiskWarrior works by rebuilding the directory in memory, so it has to be able to fit the whole catalog into virtual memory.)
I was a little paranoid that something might be wrong with the disk after that, so I fired up Disk Utility and told it to repair the disk. It churned for about 6 hours and repaired an extraordinarily large number of hardlink reference count errors, but completed by claiming that the disk had been repaired.
When I next told Time Machine to run, instead of copying over a couple GB of data like it usually does, it started copying 38GB! ***? I took a look at the previous Time Machine snapshots, and discovered that Disk Utility had totally corrupted every snapshot I'd made since last month's fandango. Most of the root-level directories in the snapshots now look like this:
    $ ls -al /Volumes/Time\ Machine\ Backups/Backups.backupdb/xxx.net/2008-03-13-025640/Euphrosyne/

That is clearly, completely wrong, and it alarms me that Disk Utility could cause so much damage to a Time Machine volume.
Since I also use SuperDuper! to regularly clone this disk, it's not as big a nightmare as it could be, but this means that I'm going to have to clear out every snapshot for the last month by hand, both because I obviously can't trust them anymore, and because I keep getting messages like this in the logs:

I'd like to keep the old snapshots if I can. What's likely to happen if I just go and clear out the b0rked backup sessions by hand?
(Hmm... it appears yes, because I just deleted them all and the disk didn't recover the freed space.)
Here's the important question: has anyone else had issues using Disk Utility on a Time Machine volume, and does anyone at Apple have any plans to add integrity checking to Time Machine? As it stands, I don't really feel like I can trust it in its present form, as convenient as it is...

I have trouble with disk utility on my new (1 TB Lacie) as well as on my old (500 GB WD) drive. After doing a backup, du tells me a never ending list of errors like
HasFolderCount flag needs to be set (id = 599567)
(it should be 0x10 instead of 0)
Everything was O.K. before doing the backup; so is the disk to be backupped, according to du.
Up to now, no other problem occurred, but I´d like to clear this issue before my trust in time machine is restored.

  • Time machine is not working on imac intel i7

I just got a new imac intel core i7 which is an upgrade from my power mac G4 MDD which I got in 2003. I transferred all the information from the power G4 using time machine and it worked fine. I then upgraded the OS to 10.6.4 given imac is intel core. All programs are working fine except I am unable to use time machine. It runs for a few gb and then the following error come on time machine buddy:

Copied 70375 files (17.4 GB) from volume Macintosh HD.

    Backup failed with error: 11
Then when I try to verify and repair the disk, it does do it and keep on showing: " invalid node structure, invalid key length and invalid record count"
I have changed the external hard drive twice so I doubt that is the problem. Please help

    Rajiv,
I'd recommend going to the Time Machine forum for Snow Leopard. First start out reading the Troubleshooting FAQ at the top. The forum is located at:
