Time Machine Disk now Read-Only

Help, Help, Help! I am at my wits end. I have a Drobo set up for my time machine backups and it has been working flawlessly for almost 15 months. However, last week, upon hooking my laptop up again after a trip, I kept getting an error that the disk is now read-only. I've scoured the internet to find a solution as to why this changed all of a sudden and have tried all suggestions to no avail. I can read the backups but I can't even copy them to another disk to carry out the dreaded reformat. It is over 15 months of backups that as I see it can not be recovered at this point. This is so frustrating because I can see them, read them but can't move them, copy them, compress them, ...........
If anyone has any suggestions at all as to how to recover them and/or return to the disk to the status it had for months and months as a read and write disk I would be so, so grateful. As is, time machine made things worse! I depended on it and my Drobo which has a protection scheme in case of a disk error for my backups. Now, nothing.
Please help!
Joe

That usually means the backups are corrupted/damaged.
See #C6 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Time Machine - disk appears "read-only"

After shorting my hard drive on the body of my MacBook Pro while plugging in the USB connector (one drawback of the aluminium body, although an uncommon one), Time Machine now reports the error, "Files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only."  The drive appears to be working normally (eg. no strange sounds of platters failing etc).  I can access my previous Time Machine backups no problem.
I've run Disk Utility to check for problems, but it cannot find any.  My guess is that Time Machine must have activated as I shorted the hard drive, corrupting it somehow.  I think it is only really a case of resetting various permissions through Terminal, but I am reticent to just start fumbling around.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
    I'm running 10.8.5.
    Many thanks.  James.

You need to get rid of MacKeeper (Zeobit).  Do not use their uninstaller, follow the instructions here ...

When that is done there does not appear to be a lot wrong if you correct the red ink entries.
The 4Gb is sufficient for Yosemite though 6 or 8 Gb would be better.  You may find the download slow so be prepared.

  • External drive use for Time Machine change to "Read Only"

I have an external hard drive set up for backing up with Time Machine on my Mac. It has been working well. Now when time machine tries to back up it tells me the external disk is read only. The hard drive does mount to the computer and will let me open the Time Machine folder. When I am in disk utility it also sees the external hard drive but will not let me click on repair disk permissions. Under the drive info's sharing & permissions window it said " You can only read." , After unlocking everything is grayed out, but the permission is set to read & write. Any thoughts on how to get this drive back to read and write? Its a 2TB drive with 1.79TB on disk. The drive has not been ever used on a windows machine or use on any other computer and is use only for  Time Machine backups. One day it was read/write next day read only. Thanks!

The backup drive has malfunctioned and corrupted itself. If that has ever happened before, or if it ever happens again, replace the drive. You may want to consider replacing it anyway for the safety of your data.
You should start another backup now, on another drive, if you don't already have one. One backup is never enough to be safe.
If you choose to keep using the problem drive, turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane, then launch Disk Utility, select the backup volume, and run Repair Disk. This operation may take several hours. If the volume can't be repaired, you'll have to erase it and start over. Don't do that unless you have at least one other complete backup. Remember to turn TM back ON.

  • Time Machine backup failed - "Read Only" - does that mean external HD is full?

Just received an error message re: Time Machine -
Time Machine Could not complete the Backup.
Files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be "read only"
Does this mean I have to try and repair the external HD OR can it mean the external HD is full (which I was expecting) and I need to start a new one?
When I open Preferences, it says "Available: 2.04 of 319.94 GB
    Oldest Backup - (blank)
    Latest Backup - Failed
I have turned it off and don't want to do something stupid.
So, should I follow directions to try to reformat the disk using Disk Utility? Does it mean everything on there is potentially lost?
Thanks for any directions . .

  • Found iCal events in Time Machine.  Now Lion only allowing me to import one event at a time.

Upgrade my macbook pro over the weekend to Snow Leopard and then Lion.   I lost all my the majority of my iCal events.   Went to Apple store and they said that was rare and not sure how to restore my last back up from Time Machine on an external drive.   I've been spending hours trying to go through a bunch of threads on different MAC formums.
So I finally found my iCal events in Time Machine.   When I try to import these events, I am only allowed to highlight/import one event at a time.   This will take me forever to import years of missing data.   I basically have been using my iCal to journal for my 3 small daughters - first tooth, hair cut, etc.   So I am desperate to get these events back so I can get them printed and SAFE.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to import my ics files?   The Apple Store Genius had me tryng to import the corestorage.ics files.   2 or 3 of those files showed they were trying to be imported for over 4 hours.   I finally Forced Quit iCal.   I've tried this several times and same result.
The corestorage files were under user/library/application support/ical/sources
I now located the calendar events user/library/calendars/ then a bunch of coded files leading to the events.  These events appear to be the ones I am looking for as I can read some of the files.   I have several years I want to import back into my working iCal.
Please help if you know how!!!
    Thank you,
Very Upset Mama of 3 little girls

Thomas - You are awesome - THANK YOU!
I did exactly what you said (CAN"T believe an Apple Genius did not know this) and I think all of my events got restored.
However, it duplicated all of the calendars - I have 6 (one for each family member plus an extra called home that we all have to do).   Not sure if I did something wrong, but do you have any ideas?
Also, the time setting must be wrong b/c I have events from 2008 showing up in 2012 - same day and time as the old sessoin - just out dated.    Do I need to manually change all of this?   Should I delete the Calendars folder again and try again?
Also, I read some where about deleting a iCal cache file.   Do I need to do this?
I TRULY appreciate you taking the time to help people in this forum.   I have spent hours the past two days trying to figure this out.   Plus, now I need to figure out about upgrading my Office for Mac b/c I didn't realize I lost Office 2004 when upgrading to Lion.
Thank you for your time and support!
    Lori

  • I used my not empty hard drive for the time machine, so now i only have stuff from time machine, everything else is gone!!! please help, does this mean everything else is completely gone?

Did mac format everything that was there? if not, why cant i see it when i opebn the drive, and if it did format it is there a way to bring it back? my whole life is on that harddrive!!!!

If you clicked through a warning that Time Machine was going to erase the drive, then yes, everything that was there before is gone. Restore from one of your backups.

  • How do I change Mac time machine default from "read only" to write?

I have successfully backed up my hard drive to an external on Time Machiine.  Problem:  the copied files are read only.  I want to be able to change that default to write.  Where would I do this?  Thanks.

    Eric:
Thanks so much!  Actually, after I posted this question, I figured it out after much trial and error, plenty of both, and it does work.  But your answer confirms for me the path I took.

  • Disk utility can't repair time machine disk - File system check exit code is 8

i have a WD My Passport 2Tb external hard drive that is split in to 2 volumes (1.5 & .5 TB). I use the smaller volume as my Time Machine disk. A couple of days ago I started getting an error that the Time Machine back up had failed and to use Disk Utility to repair the disk. So I launched DU and ran Verify Disk in the Time Machine volume. It quit verifying and told me to run Repair Disk EXCEPT the Repair Disk button was still greyed out.  If I select the physical drive, Repair Disk becomes available but gives me the above error. The other (larger) volume continues to work just fine.
The he Time Machine volume is read only now.
    I'm running Yosemite 10.10.1.
Hoping ting someone has a fix because I would prefer not to lose a years worth of Time Machine data.
    Mahalo for for any help.
    Steve Hudson

i'm afraid that the disk is too corrupt to repair. This could be because the drive is failing or you will need to erase the partition (which may not succeed unless you also repartition the drive.) If you must repartition the drive then you will lose data on both partitions. This is an important reason why you should not mix storage and backup on the same drive.
You will need to erase your Time Machine volume to see if that fixes the problem. You will lose all the backup data unless you get another external drive to which you can clone the backup volume before erasing it.

  • No green icon for time machine disk ?

    Just a very minor question:
My time machine disk now appears with the same yellow icon that is used for all "standard" hard disk drives.
Is there no more green disk icon ? Or can I set this manually ? (if so, how ?)

    Thanks Stef_Heck
You are perfectly right: at some stage this morning (something like 10 hours after having installed Yosemite) the icon became green automatically.
So just a question of being patient
Now 100% happy with Yosemite (while I only was 99,5% happy before.....)

  • Time machine disk permissions changed to read only

    Somehow, my Time Machine disk permissions have now changed tand my backups are failing;
    The permissions are:
Me - read/write, Staff  - read/write, Everyone - read only. I clicked on the lock and entered my system password, but I cannot change anything.
Then I ran Disk Utilities to repair and verify. Still nothing. I rebooted, logged out, logged back in, etc.
There is plenty of space left on the 2 GB drive. It is a Seagate GoFlex drive. This seems to be a new problems that has not surfaced before. My backups always ran flawlessly.
    What to do?

  • Time Machine just stopped working, Disk Repair & Read Only errors

So my TM backups have been running fine for at least six months now.
Today I started to get this error:
    "Disk Repair
The disk "xxxxxx" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible."
    followed by
    "Time Machine Error
The backup volume is read only.
To select a different volume, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine"
I've searched high and low for a solution to no avail.
Here's what I've tried so far.
Attached disk to iMac, repaired the disk. It now verifies with no errors.
Changed permissions on the disk to 644 through terminal as per an Apple article.
Rebooted iMac several times, zapped PRAM.
Anyone have any ideas as to why this is suddenly happening? I would really hate to have to reformat the disk and start from scratch. This is very frustrating, I've changed nothing.
Here's the log from Time Machine Buddy:
    Starting standard backup
    Disk image /Volumes/FreeAgent Drive/Thomas Torrillo’s iMac_002332917af9.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Backup of Thomas Torrillo’s iMac
Backing up to: /Volumes/Backup of Thomas Torrillo’s iMac/Backups.backupdb
    The target volume is read-only.
Backup failed with error: The target volume is read-only.
    Ejected Time Machine disk image.

What to do if Time Machine reports you don't have permission
This was posted in the Apple Discussions by V.K. I have only modified it slightly to be more generic.
The problem seems to be that 10.5.6 changes permissions on a file so that even the root user doesn't have write peivileges. I have no idea why they did this. The workaround suggested in [an]other post will probably work, too, but i did something less drastic. Instead of deleting the file I changed permissions on it, and it worked just fine. An added benefit is that the permission change seems to stick, so you don't have to delete the file every time you change a drive.
[Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt [enter] the following command:
    sudo chmod 644 /volumes/"TM drive name"/.xxxxxxxxxxxx
The name of the file .xxxxxxxxxxxx is based on the MAC address of your computer and will be different for every computer. Put the name of the TM drive in the above and keep the quotes.
You'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see) which is normal.
This was edited by Kappy just for cleanup.
Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Time Machine Disk can be attached to LAN and still be used with TM?

I had many Time Machine's Backups with an external Western Digital USB Drive.
Now I had purchased a LaCie 2big Network. I use it for my Windows XP Network.
This Lacie has 2 Usb ports. It can be configured to use external disk also with time machine.
I would like to know if I can use my disk without lose my last TM backups.
I asked to Lacie support team if I could use my Western Digital without lose alla my previous backups.
They did tell me that they do not offer support for Time Machine problems.
I would like to try, but I quit fear to lose everything...
Did anyone tried to connect an "already time machined" disk to network and use time machine again directly from LAN?
    Thank you...

first, i should mention that TM backups to NAS devices are not officially supported. the only exception is a Time Capsule and it also works with drives attached via USB to an Airport Extreme Base station. some 3rd party NAS devices claim to support TM backups. your does claim it which means that it should work. however, if you move your current TM drive to be plugged into the Lacie NAS you'll have to start a new backup sequence. that's because directly attached backups are stored differently from remote ones. directly attached backups are stored directly in a folder on the drive and remote ones are stored in a sparse bundle.

  • Time Machine Disk Crashes Windows

    Hi everyone,
When booting into Windows, I have been getting a blue screen and crash.  I noticed that this problem goes away when I remove the Time Machine disk from my machine.  The disk is mounted internally in my Mac Pro, so it is a little inconvenent to have to remove it everytime I boot into windows.  Any ideas?
The same issue was raised here by another user, but no responses, so was hoping that maybe there's an answer now.  Thanks!!

I bought an AirPort Extreme base station about a month ago. It's currently in bridge mode, connected to my U-Verse residential gateway, and has a 1 TB hard drive attached to it that I use for Time Machine backups.
I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Every few days, usually overnight, Time Machine will stop working, saying that it cannot connect to the backup disk.
Yup, that's the sort of thing that happens sometimes in this scenario.
You might be able to improve that by, of all odd things, changing some names. See #P1 in the same place.
Another possibility is the external HD going to sleep and not waking up quickly enough. Check with the maker for firmware updates or ways to adjust it's sleep (or "spin down") performance.
But if I click on "Manual Setup," it will time out. If I try to restart the router from the menu bar option, it will time out. The only way to fix it is to manually unplug the router and restart it that way. Is anyone else having a similar issue, or know how to prevent it?
That, I suspect, is a different problem (and mostly out of my area).
But this Apple article may be helpful: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728
Hopefully one of the networking gurus, such as Tesserax or Bob Timmons, will have more insight.

  • Time Machine Disk borked after 2013-003 security update

I installed the 2013-003 update on the weekend, and conincidentally my Time Machine disk is now locked.  I haven't installed anything else really, so this Security Update is the only change I've made in recent memory, which makes me think that it is the cause, or at least the exacerbating factor.
Background: I have a 27" iMac 3.4GHz / 16 GB (iMac 12,2) with running Mountain Lion 10.8.4.  I have an external RAID array consisting of 2x 3 TB Seagate Barracudas in a Nexstar MX two-bay enclosure, with the enclosure hardware controlling the RAID.  This has worked more or less flawlessly since last fall -- that is until this update.   No raid errors from the enclosure -- as far as it knows the disks are in fine health.
After restarting following the update, I get a message that the OS has locked the Time Machine disk (my aforementioned RAID array) -- so I can read data from it, but I can no longer write -- I can no longer make backups. It mounted the disk, and suggested I use disk first aid to fix it, so I do.
Open Disk First aid, and set it to Verify.  I get some strange errors.  Don't take my word for it, here's the log:

So since this, I can rarely mount the disk.  When I can, I cannot unlock it to back up to -- although if it's awful as it suggests, I don't think I want to.
But, it all seems a little strange to me.  This is RAID, I shouldn't have these problems, no?  I mean, the disks are fine -- although if there was an error on the primary, enough time has passed that's been copied to the secondary by now, so I can't swap them.
Has anyone else had an external disk go T/U after this update?  Is there some fix I'm missing?  I have a new external disk on order (with Thundebolt) so if I have to rebuild my back ups, it won't take as long as this guy over USB, but I don't want to forgo the versions of the files I have no going back some 2 years.
Any insight?  Is my backup borked, making me start over new and lose my back up history?  Is there anyway I can recover this disk, outside of Disk First Aid / sending it to a data recovery place?  Even do you think if I rolled back this update (if that's even a thing) would it set me back on track?
    Thanks!

I had the same issue after a re-build of mountain lion on an older Macbook pro.  I followed you link and instructions and it worked! Thanks wjosten
