Time machine disk sharing
Dear Common Wisdom:
I have been using Time Machine for quite a while now, but I have a question about the empty space on my external HD.
Must a HD being used to store backups be exclusively for Time Machine?
Can I use the empty space for my own storage?

I am really confusing you .
Look, I have huge files from recording sessions that don't fit on my internal, so I need to have them with me for the job I am going to in another city.
What I would like to do is also purchase a new MacBook Pro in that city and leave my own computer home so I can communicate with my family while away.
Therefore, what I want to know is if it is risky to make a Time Machine backup to my external for use in setting up my new computer. The other data on the external will remain on the external.
Is this any clearer?
I want to know if I am taking a big risk in storing external data AND a Time Machine backup for this one occassion of the purchase of the new computer?

Leopard, Vista, Time Machine, and Shared on a single disk
A friend of mine recently bought one of the new Mac Pros and I'm helping him set it up.
Here's what I want to do and I've been having considerable trouble getting this to work.
My friend got a single terabyte hard drive and I want to partition it into four partitions- one for Leopard, one for Vista, one for Time Machine, and one for Sharing files (FAT 32).
I found out the long way that Boot Camp will not let you install Vista if you already have several partitions on your hard drive.
Here's what I have done so far.
1. Erased the drive and installed a fresh installation of Leopard
2. Run Boot Camp to install Vista (this worked fine and I was able to boot into both operating systems)
3. Booted from OS X install disk and used disk utility to create two new partitions from the HSF formated Leopard drive
My problem is that creating these new partitions deactivated the Vista Partition. The windows partition still shows up in Disk Utility as it did before but when I hold down option to try booting into Windows, Vista no longer shows up. The Mac Works fine as does the Time Machine and Shared partitions.
Could someone please help me to get Vista working again. I hope I won't have to reinstall everything to make this work but if that's the only way, could someone at least tell me how to accomplish my original goal with the computer setup?VaatiKaiba wrote:

If not, can I backup the Windows partition using a Windows program? Also, can I back them up onto the same disc, or will that confuse Mac OS if it has to look back for a backup?

You should not backup a program onto the same HD. When the HD fails, you lose the backup as well as the original.
Backup your Windows partition to your TM drive. It's a perfect match.

How to Move a Shared Time Machine disk to another Mac?
Hi,
I have a network with three macs. Initially, I had a Time Machine disk connected via USB to Mac A. Mac A and Mac B used that disk for TM backups.
Now I have coupled the Time Machine disk (via Firewire if that matters) to Mac C.
Mac B can't find the Time Machine disk anymore (as well as Mac A I guess), although the TM disk itself has still the same name. When I explicitly open the TM disk on Mac C in the Finder on Mac B, Mac B does not recognise it as its original TM disk.
After I clicked Change Disk in the Time Machine preferences on Mac B, I was able to reselect the TM disk. However, it doesn't see that there is already a long history present from Mac B and Time Machine plans to back up from scratch.
How can I tell Mac A and Mac B that the TM disk that is now connected to Mac C is still the same disk?

Yes. This is possible, but it isn't touted as one of the features that sells Mac OS X Server. The advertised Time Machine server solution is to host an AFP share point on the Mac OS X Server system which clients then use as a Time Machine backup destination, similar to Time Capsule.
But, what I think you're going for is something like this: You have a share point where multiple users can read and write, and you'd like the server to be able to backup that share point via Time Machine, but also allow its clients to connect and see those backups. This is kind of like "Time Machine for a sharepoint." Again, this isn't really touted, but it's possible. Here is an example which shows you how.
For starters, let's say that your server's disks are well-organized. You have one volume for the server's operating system (Boot), one volume for the share points (Data), and one volume for backup (Backup). Other scenarios could work, but this configuration will make this how-to easier to understand. Let's also agree that your server's hostname is junglecat.amazon.private.
Let's say that the share point (group folder) that we want backed-up is at /Volumes/Data/Group-Folder on the server. Let's also agree that your group members already have access to this folder - e.g. it is already a share point with an ACL entry that grants the group members read and write access.
You'll need to configure Time Machine on the server itself first, just as if it were a client. Open System Preferences, and use the Time Machine pane to choose the Backup volume as the server's backup destination. You'll want to make sure that only the contents of the Data disk (the disk housing the Group-Folder) are backed up. Skip anything on your boot disk, as you're using Time Machine to back up just the share points. Let the server at least start its first backup, which will create the following directory:
/Volumes/Backup/Backups.backupdb/junglecat.amazon.private
...where the server's Time Machine backups will be stored.
Now use Server Admin's File Sharing section to make the /Volumes/Backup disk a share point, with these properties: Share the folder via AFP, and enable it as a Time Machine backup destination. (Your clients will not really be backing up to the folder, but they will be needing to see it as a place that Time Machine can keep a backup. This creates the .com.apple.timemachine.supported file on the share point.)
It's also a good idea to disable guest access and add an ACL deny rule to the share point (/Volumes/Backup) which denies delete and delete_child for everyone:
chmod +a "everyone deny delete,delete_child" /Volumes/Backup.
This prevents people from storing other data next to the Backups.backupdb folder. The Backups.backupdb folder already contains an ACL deny rule that limits its access to read-only.
Back on a client, mount the newly-shared Backup share point. The client's Time Machine may ask permission to use this as a backup location (because it was defined as such), but don't let it. The important thing is that the client recognized it as a backup location.
To browse the server's Time Machine history, the client must right-click on the Time Machine icon in the Dock (or use the Time Machine menu extra) and choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disk," where the user can choose the server's backup volume. Now the client can go back in time on the server, star-field and all. If the user needs to restore a file, Time Machine will ask him/her where to save the restored copy; it will not overwrite the copy on the Group-Folder share point.

Time Machine - Browse other Time Machine disk - not showing all files
I have an Xserve, running 10.6 server, where we keep all of our files. It backs up via Time Machine. Many users use the shared drives on the Xserve, and I encourage them to put their files there. We work in a design / production house, so many people collaborate on files. Due to the nature of the business, with frequent design changes, we need to go "back in time" and pull out previous versions of designs, etc. Usually I handle this by remotely accessing the Xserve, starting up time machine, and pulling out the old versions of files from the backups.
However, when I'm not in, I wanted to make this option available to another user, without giving her full access to the server. I discovered the "Browse Other Time Machine" option, and after making my Time Machine disk (actually a rack-mount Mercury Pro RAID array) shared, I was able to mount it on her Mac, also running 10.6. I thought this would be a nice solution.
The problem is, in some directories, when browsing from her computer, Time machine is showing no backups. It's impossible to go back more than a few snapshots with it. Meanwhile, if I do it on the server, everything is fine. So I thought perhaps it was a permissions issue, but I don't want to muck up the permissions on my time machine drive and risk losing everything. I did add her account as a user with read-only access to the time machine drive, and told it to apply to all sub folders. This didn't make any difference.
What is the issue? Is it permissions? Or is my Time Machine too large (6TB) that it can't load all the data over the network? Has anyone encountered this before? Restrict access to Time Machine Disk?
I'm hoping I'm missing something simple here, perhaps someone can enlighten me:
I've set up an external drive on a new dual band Extreme Base Station to act as the Time Machine volume for all of my family's computers.
In order to get the backups working without user intervention I have to enable file sharing on the disk in Airport Utility, and then because I have "Secure Shared Disks" enabled, I had to make sure the password was saved in each user's keychain (at least 1 per computer).
My problem is that this now allows users access to the sparse images on the time Machine Disk.
Can anybody suggest a way to restrict access while maintaining automatic Time Machine backups in the background? Like I said, I feel like I'm probably missing something as this seems like it should be a standard feature, no?

I don't think that's right -- if the password is stored in the "System" keychain, it shouldn't matter whether or not anyone is logged in. Just to make sure we aren't talking about different things, I was referring to the "System" keychain, not any individual users' keychain, including "admin" users or the "root" user. A user's login keychain would not normally be unlocked (requiring the user's password) unless they log in, but the system should have access to the "System" keychain whenever it needs it.

That raises an important point that I had previously overlooked -- initially, when I had raised the possibility of restricting file access to the backup itself, I suggested that restricting access to the password would be better. However, upon further consideration, it would probably be preferable to do both, because while restricting access to the password would limit users' ability to mount the share and look at backups whenever they felt like it, it might not prevent them from browsing backups while the system has mounted the remote volume and is in the process of performing the backup. That too would depend on how things are mounted (which I have no way of checking).
Just something to keep in mind while you are experimenting... -
I have a headless PowerPC Mini which I use as a media server.
I decided to add an external disk so that I could do Time Machine backups and, according to the Pref Pane all is proceeding and backups are being taken as expected.
Because it's a headless system, however, the only way for me to see Time Machine in action is to use Screen Sharing. When I run Time Machine, the front window moves down and centre as expected but the background, arrows, and bar at the bottom of the window do not appear.
I suspect this is a limitation of the antiquated hardware and Core Animation, but can anyone confirm this and possibly offer any suggestions how I might be able to use Time Machine in this situation? (Could I, for example, take my Time Machine disk to another mac and use it to restore in the event of a catastrophe?)Hi Bernard.
I have had exactly the same problem. But in my case I am using an up to date Mac mini (core 2 intel) to control a second such mini via screen saving.So it isn't the hardware. The two boxes are on a wired LAN so the network bandwidth is pretty good as well.
So, I expect it is the limitations of the protocol (VNC?) which underlies screen sharing that are causing this. Have you noticed that you cannot look at stuff on your media server in "Cover Flow" mode via screen sharing either? You get a message saying it isn't visible.

I reckoned that if I needed to recover some stuff from the time machine drive I could either just manually copy it back using the finder - the individual files are all there, uncompressed and readable on the TM hard drive - or if I really needed to run TM in recover mode I would need to plug a screen keyboard and mouse into the media server unit temporarily. After all, if the hard drive died you need to fish the thing out of its cupboard to get it mended anyway... -
Why do I have time machine disk problem after closing and later reopening clamshell.
I consistently see the following after closing and later reopening my Macbook Pro (5,1). I have to unplug and replug my Time Machine USB drive.
The only thing new is Mountain Lion. The Time Machine disk has 229 GB free of 1.5 TB. I never had to unplug this drive under Lion.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I ran disc repair on Time Machine Drive yesterday, but it found nothing.

Time Machine is intended to be left enabled always whether a backup drive is connected or not. What Time Machine cannot handle properly is a situation where the backup drive loses power for whatever reason. Time Machine treats this, as does the OS, as an improper disconnect of an external drive without being properly ejected. This in turn throws Time Machine a little bit of a loop.
For you I would suggest not using Time Machine. Instead use a third-party backup utility that you can either schedule or run manually as you wish. They will work with the same drive you have used for Time Machine, but you will need to first erase the Time Machine drive using Disk Utility. Please DO NOT try dragging the Time Machine backups to the Trash.
Here are some good backup utilities you can try:

2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate. Each one can be used for a trial period. No need to pay for one until you've decided on which one you like best. I, for example, use Carbon Copy Cloner but please don't take that as a recommendation over the others. It's just my preference. All can be operated manually or can be set up to backup on a schedule you determine. Some can even be set up to backup as soon as the backup drive is connected.

The question pretty much says it all.
I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
All systems are running 10.6.8.Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

I backed up two different computers on the same time machine disk. Now, one of my computer is dead. I can see the backups on my time machine disk. How can I get the backup data that belongs to dead computer. When I enter time machine, I only have access to corresponding backup. I do not want to destroy the backups. My timemachine backup structure looks like below:

Now, my Computer-1 is dead, and I am using Compter-2. Bootcamp 4, Windows 7, Time machine disk
Hi,
I'm currently having an weird issue with Windows 7 x64 on my Macbook Pro.
I'm getting a bluescreen of death each time my USB Time Machine disk is connected.
Any other HFS+ disk doesn't make Windows crash, it's only the Time Machine disk.
I've try with Bootcamp 3.2 and i'm getting the same issue.
The only think I can see is the upgrade of Lion who modify my Time Machine disk.
Cheers,The version you have downloaded is an upgrade one, and you need a PC with Windows to download and burn it to a DVD or USB drive. You can't do it with your Mac, as it's a EXE file. Also, you can't use it legally unless you have already Windows on the computer

Copy error -36 when copying from Time Machine disk to Mac
Since using OS X 10.6.(.6), I can't copy certain files from my Time Machine disk to the Mactintosh hard disk without getting a copy error -36. The error doesn't occur with all files: for example pdf files will copy without problems, but Filemaker Pro files and iCal files don't. May be it's important to mention that when I retrieve files from the Time Machine disk, I have to mount the "sparse bundle" with my user files first and then drag the files to the desktop or an other place. This is because I'm running File Vault. If I try to retrieve files that were backed up under OS X 10.5, I get no copying errors at all. So it looks as if Snow Leopard has something to do with it. Is there anybody who has seen this problem before and knows how to solve it?
Ok, I finally was able to complete the Disk Utility Repair, and it says everything is ok. Still the problem in restoring presists.
One thing I noticed is that most files that Time Machine restore chokes on have an added set of permissions added to the file or folder with the same user name as mine, and the permissions level says "Custom". Thus it has 2 sets of permissions defined with the same user name, one with Read/Write and another with the same name that says "Custom." Am I explaining this well? Maybe this is a clue? -
Time Machine Disk on One Machine Backing up a Second

I have an iMac with an external hard drive I use for time machine. I am going to get a MacBook Air and want to use the same hard drive for Time Machine. I know you can store 2 different computer time machine backups onto the same drive, however I do not have an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule. My question then is, is there any way to have the MacBook Air backup to the time machine disk plugged in locally to the iMac via the Network or would I need to get a Airport Extreme or Time Capsule? I'd prefer not having to disconnect/reconnect the time machine disk every time I want it to back up each machine (kinda defeats the point of it doing things automatically). Is this possible? Yup.
See #22 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. I'd strongly recommend that you partition the drive, as noted there.
The backups made over a network will be stored differently than the ones done locally; in a disk image sparse bundle. -
Time machine disk permissions changed to read only
Somehow, my Time Machine disk permissions have now changed tand my backups are failing;
The permissions are:
Me - read/write, Staff - read/write, Everyone - read only. I clicked on the lock and entered my system password, but I cannot change anything.
Then I ran Disk Utilities to repair and verify. Still nothing. I rebooted, logged out, logged back in, etc.
There is plenty of space left on the 2 GB drive. It is a Seagate GoFlex drive.This seems to be a new problems that has not surfaced before. My backups always ran flawlessly.

Time Machine disk not recognised
My G5 PowerMac has been away for repair; it's needed a new logic board. It was away for nearly two weeks. Now Time Machine doesn't recognise the external drive which contains the Time Machine backups from last November. It wants to do a backup from scratch and says there isn't enough space on the disk.
Is there any way of getting the Time Machine to recognise the previous backups and start adding to them?
I'll be very grateful for any advice.To TM, it is a different computer. The logic board includes your Ethernet "Mac Address", which is a unique number that TM uses to be sure it knows which Mac is which.
There is a fairly elaborate way to attempt to persuade TM that the existing backups really are for your "new" Mac: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
It is very easy for the inexperienced user of Terminal (and the not-so-inexperienced as well) to make an error with Terminal, get no error message, and have it not work, so try it at your own risk.
But there is an alternative: hold down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar. The +Enter Time Machine+ option changes to +Browse Other Time Machine Disks.+ That's a bit misleading, but it will take you into the normal TM interface where you can see and restore from the old set of backups.
Even if you're successful with the Terminal work, your first backup with the new logic board may be a full one -- every file and folder on your system. If TM decides to do that, you cannot prevent it.
So if your TM disk/partition isn't at least 2.5 times the size of the data it's backing-up, your best bet may be to just erase it with Disk Utility and let TM start over.
