Time Machine Disk spinning all the time?

Day 3 of my TC. Love it, so far. Curious, though...my disk seems to be spinning all the time. Is this normal? Even when computer is in sleep?

Mine is warm-hot to the touch. I can leave my hand on it without discomfort. A RadioShack IR thermometer measures the warmest point on the top at 120 degrees. There is a fan inside which is on at all times. The fan is fairly quiet. I can only hear it when my Mac is shut down. (A dual G5 is CLEARLY louder than the Time Capsule...) The hard drive goes to sleep quickly. If I try to access the hard drive, I can barely hear it spinning up to speed. There's about a 5-10 second delay before the finder window opens. I assume this is how it is supposed to be? Does anyone know how the Time Capsule is supposed to behave? There aren't really any references yet... The genius at my local Apple store just started using one and doesn't yet have an understanding of its normal behavior.

  • Since my last update on OSX10.9.2 My mac hardly starts up. and whats with that rainbow wheel spinning all the time

It's not booting uplike it should. Its very slow. Rainbow wheel spinning all the time. Augh!

Make sure you have a backup.  You should always have a backup and especially when your Mac is ailing.
    Time Machine Basics:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Most commonly used backup methods:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3045
    Try and SMC Reset.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Look in the Applications/Utilities folder and run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left disk icon.  Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”?  If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.  Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk.  If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.  If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up.
Try booting in Safe Mode (Boot and hold down the Shift key.)  It should take longer to boot and shutdown. Once it is booted is it more responsive?
Please download and run Etrecheck and post back the results.

    Toshiba please I need help
The first run of my laptop I entered my location my name and a password, I install Toshiba updates and Windows 7 updates (the notifications I got) then I noticed the hard drive is active all the time and the laptop is very slow. I tried a lot to restore the original Toshiba image the built in the laptop and I finally did it thinking maybe I did something wrong
The hard disk drive still always active (don't know what reading or writing) no monitoring for any activity the laptop very slow and lot of seeking sounds.
any solution please, I got this problem the first use of it :(

I know it has a guarantee and they will replace it for free, but it was a gift from Saudi Arabia, I'm now in Syria :( I've to wait until on of my relative go back there :D
I went to Toshiba in Syria they charge my 7 $ to tell me the hard is defective although I knew it was so, and I will need to pay 100$ for a replacement so I will wait ;)
thanks all, it was my mistake, it is just I noticed the HDD light always on in windows 7 and it was not on in USB Linux so I thought it was a system problem, I didn't have much time to work on it and make tests :D
    I'm sorry again

  • New - Macbook Pro - Running slow, beach ball spinning all the time

I've had my Macbook pro about 3 weeks and the beach ball is constantly spinning and I'm constantly having to force quit programs. Between Mail, Safari, and Aperture. Any ideas?
    Robin

    ONE POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
I've recently had the beach ball appearing every 30 seconds or so and then the Mac totally freezes.
After trying all the suggestions online, the solution that fixed my problem was to reset the SMU. It basically forces the fan to maximum power and cools your mac down. The problems I had were being caused by an overheating Mac, even though it looked like a system software issue!
    The reset the SMU:
    Shut your Mac down.
Unplug the power cable from the back of the mac and any other devices (keyboard, etc).
Leave the mac for at least 10 seconds.
Hold down the power button on the back of the mac.
Keep holding down the power button and re-attach the power cable.
Once the power cable is in place, release the power button.
Now press the power button again to start-up your mac. (You can plug your devices back in now).
You should now hear the fan at maximum levels (it's very noisy!).
If you have the same problem that I had, your mac should start to cool and your mac should start operating preperly again (it may take a few minutes).
If this works, you'll then need to download FAN CONTROL FOR MAC.
It's a control panel that better regulates the temperature of your mac than the standard settings.

  • Will resetting my Macbook Pro with the disk delete all the applications I have installed?

    Hello all,
As a graduation gift, my parents bought me the Macbook Pro, but they forgot the Admin password they had set on it...So I did a little but of searching around and the Installation disk solution came up. I have the disk, but I was wondering if I did follow through with it, will it erase all the applications I have installed like Microsoft Word, PPT, and Excel?
    Thank you.

    See the following:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • HT204382 what software do i need to play movies on avi file . have connected a external memory disk and all the movies are in avi format.

What software do i need to install in order to be able
to play movies in .avi format.
have connected an external memory and all the entertainment
    files are in .avi format.
Ansver i get : does not support

VLC is a good choice. While I don't know if it will play your files, Perian is a helper app for Quicktime which allows you to play a lot of things in the Quicktime Player.
There is also Flip4Mac which allows you to play windows media files in Quicktime.
Finally, note that the extension on a video file doesn't really tell you what you need to play it. The .avi, .mpg, etc. is only the wrapper around the actual video. The video is encoded by some means and needs to be decoded. The video inside the .avi can be encoded in one of many different schemes.
VLC, Perian, Flip4Mac, and many others, are all able to decode various flavors of encoding. Having all of those in your toolbox will help to allow you to play most of the things you'll find.

  • Time Machine crashes computer all the time

I see there are several TM and Leopard issues. Though I should ask my own question/topic. I've been trying to use TM for the first time on the new MacBook Pro. It crashes every time with that dark curtain falling over everything. Then the external drive needs to be reformatted and erased each time. Please help. What could be the problem? As this is a new computer there really isn't anything on here that could cause it to crash. All attempt to back up have failed. What is going on?

  • 100 disk usage all the tim HELP!!

    Hello,
I have the exact same issue as everyone else.  I have searched everywhere, tried all things, still no answer.  It is happening on multiple computers.
100% disk usage, 1000-20000 average response time on disk.  Computer comes to a grinding halt.  I ran the Windows Performance recorder and have uploaded it to:

  • Windows copied files to partition, now Disk Error all the time...

    Hi all,
I have installed Windows XP SP2 before (using this disk) on a Mac using Boot Camp but this is refusing to read the files Windows Installer placed on the BootCamp partition, so it can't finish the installation. Merged it back, did the whole thing again for the same result.
    "Disk Error
    Press any key to restart"
of course pressing keys does nothing, I have to hold the power button in for 5 seconds to shut down. I can still boot up as a Mac, just the Windows side refuses to install.
Mac Mini 1.6 CoreDuo 1MB RAM Snow Leopard 10.6.1
    Any ideas anyone?
    with best regards,
    Karn.

Just tried for the 4th time, and I had to use the long winded FAT 32 format in the Windows Installer and success! The Quick version was what I used before I'm sure, but it didn't work tonight...
    Working now anyway...
    with best regards,
    Karn.

  • Mac Mini runs SOOO SLOW.  Wheel of Death spins all the time.  Should I reload all the software?

I own four Macs, which includes three laptops and a Mac Mini.  One laptop uses Mavericks, the other two laptops are Lions. They ALL work GREAT at a quick speed.  The Mini, on the same wireless, runs soooo much slower, I wonder if there's a virus on it. The wheel of death is constantly spinning every time I click anywhere, i.e. Opening a new program, new file, or surfing the net. SOMETIMES FOR 30 SECONDS +.  Nothing is quick.   I took it to the Apple store, and they said there's plenty of space on it.  It's OS X Lion 10.7.5. 11 G63.  I noticed if I shut it down and restart it, it works better with less tabs open in Google Chrome.
I really don't know anything about computers. I have Word and Excel loaded on it. Should I delete the hard drive and start all over? Could there be a virus on it?  I don't know where the software is for the Microsoft product... If I wrote down the serial numbers of Word and Excel, is that enough to reload it?
    Thanks so much!

Make sure your trash is emptied, also your iPhoto trash is emptied, your caches are are clear, build up of these can rally slow things down.

Chance of a virus is slim, macs are quite good at taking care of themselves, and most anti-virus software will slow down your computer and not really protect you at all, so stay away from that stuff.

  • Is it normal that Time Machine is backupping all the time ...

I don't think I have worked/changed a lot in the rencent hours (worked on one InDesign file, surfed a bit, played one arcade game (for half an hour). Still Time Machine is constantly backing up files.
(e.g. 8,4 MB of 55.798 objects, before that some other high number with appr. 32 MB, etc etc
    Is this normal?
(I have only finished the first backup yesterday), so maybe it's doing some tidying up?

I had the similar problem with my MacBook (80GB) & Western Digital external HD (250GB). Every **** hour the process started: "preparation" taking 15 minutes and backing up 5 - 10GB EVERY hour. Even if I had only changed few files in my Documents-folder and used Mail and web browser.
I excluded all system/library folders so that Time Machine backed up only my personal files (pictures & documents). STILL the hourly backup was HUGE and consumed a lot of system resources and heating up my MacBook. And I swear I didn't change huge amounts of big files, not even close to the amount being backed up every hour.
Last drop was when TM announced that the space available was not enough to make a backup (isn't TM supposed to remove old backups to make space???). I stopped using TM since it was unusable, I hope there major issues will be fixed in a system update in the near future.

  • Should a macbook drive spin all the time?

I just replaced my 120gb with a 750gb, and it never stops spinning. It seems to use a lot more battery life too, becsues of the constent spinning I assume.
    Its a samsung sata 5400rpm.

I do have the preferences for the hard drive to stop after 10 minutes of not reading/writing. With the original drive that came with the macbook I could tell when it spun down. There was a definate stop in vibration, like if you closed the lid and it went to sleep. Now, the vibration continues even when I have not loaded any new doc, web page, email, etc for 10 + min. I know it is not the fan either. Thats kicks on sometimes with streaming video, etc.
It has also been a couple of weeks since I set up the new drive, which should be plenty of time for spotlight to have indexed. I only have around 90gb on this 750gb drive.

  • HT4889 How can I restore my email accounts and email settings from time machine without restoring all the applications

I have just restored my Macbook Pro having had some applications corrupting it. I have restored my data and other information, but am struggling to restore my email accounts, signatures, folders and contents. I have been using time machine, but do not know how to restore the right bit. Thanks for your help. P

Open Time Machine, and in Finder navigate to the "V2" folder (shown below) and highlight its contents. Then select the Previous DATE over on the right edge of Time machine to then "Restore" from.

  • Nothing works my beachball is spinning all the time

I have a MacBook Pro and upgraded to Yosemite a few weeks ago. The first week was a learning process but it has been impossible since then. Literally every task I try to do I have the beachball spinning, SAFARI, GOOGLE, BOOKMARKS, WORD, EXCEL, ITUNES, ALL OF THEM. I wait FOR several to many minutes for something to open and then the beachball appears again and I cannot even type my entry for another minute or two. My computer is basically unusable.
If we are all having this problem, who won't have this problem with Yosemite? Is Apple trying to crash the world? I have been glad to read on many posts in other strings that many of you have more ram than I do (4) as it has been suggested to me by Apple that I buy more ram - but obviously that does no good.
In describing Yosemite problems many posts only mention "MAIL," and recommend disabling various parts of it. BUT I don't even use apple/google mail so I don't even have the icon referred to on my Activity Monitor. (I am using Entourage)

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
