Time machine does not find my external hard disk.

is this because it is formatted ms-dos. it has been this way since i've had it and have used it to manually back up photos and other things, which worked fine. i see back up folders on there but time machine does not recognize it as its back up. can anyone enlighten me.

Your external HDD needs to be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) for Time Machine to use it as a backup destination. You can move your current data off the drive and format it via Disk Utility.
You mentioned there are TM backup folders. Curious that you cannot access them. How are you trying to access them? Are you using the TM interface or viewing it via Finder?

    1. restoring data over icloud takes time
    2. iCloud is not designed as a replacement to Time Machine.

  • Time Machine does not see my external HD

I would like to setup TM but it does not see my external HD, but I can see it on desktop in and finder. I can browse it. But time machine does not see it and forces me to use airport time capsule but I don't have it. Help please.

What format is the external drive in?
If it's formatted for Windows (either using the MBR partition table or using FAT/NTFS volumes) then Time Machine cannot back up to this disk.
The disk needs to be formatted as Mac OS X Extended using either the APM or GPT partition tables.
Life is complicated somewhat by the fact that the OS, in general, can read MBR/FAT drives, but they're not suitable for Time Machine (limitations in the disk formats prevent some of Time Machine's features from working).
You can check the current partition map/disk format in Disk Utility.app - just select the disk on the left and the information will be displayed below. If the disk is using MBR and/or FAT then you'd need to reformat the drive in order to use it with Time Machine.

  • Time machine does not find time capsule

When trying to perform a backup of my iMac to my Time Capsule using Time Machine it just keep searching for the "Disk".  This, albeit, i have selected it

    The network is having issues..
Need more info, but the first step is a simple reboot of the TC. ie pull out the power .. count to 10.. plug in power.
If that is no good, try a full network restart in correct order.. from off.. restart, modem.. wait 2min.. restart TC.. wait 2min.. restart clients.
If the TC fails to show up in the computer, you will need to give more info.
    What OS?
What modem.. make and model?? How is the TC connected to it?
What mode is the TC in, bridge or router?
If you are using wireless try ethernet.
Especially try doing a full factory reset if none of the above work. Do the setup of the TC and the backup in full network isolation. Just computer and TC with ethernet.

  • HT201250 Time machine does not recognize WD external drive

Time machine and back-ups worked fine on my MacBookPro. It stopped working, no I believe it is still working but the MackBookPro does not recognize it and when clicking "Back up" I receive the message that the external drive is not available. Thanks to Bootcamp the computer also has a Windows side which I use mainly to run a soaring flight simulator called Condor. When I turn on the MacBookPro and click on "Choice" the window I receive shows the Mac and Windows operating systems, the Back-up and "My Passport." When I click on "My passport" it actually opens...When I turn the computer off and reboot it again there is no sign of "My Passport."
Now, I have a second WD My Passport which I bought for the Windows side of the computer. When I attach it before turning on the computer, I shows up on Finder, however, when I click "Back up" here it seems like it is starting back-up but only for a few seconds and then I get the message that the drive is a Windows formatted drive and that a back-up cannot be completed.
Why does the Windows formatted drive show up in Finder and also when I run the Windows side, however, the driver for the Mac does not show up on Finder?
I now have only the Mac formatted external drive attached and I just received the following messages: Can't back up. Reformat the disk. Files can still be read but the drive can no longer be used for back-ups. Get a new external drive. Run back-ups as soon as possible.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

OK, so it sounds like you have a Mac formatted drive that you have used previously for Time Machine, and disconnected it for a few weeks, and you can now see files on it OK from your Mac. However, when the system tries to run a Time Machine backup, you get an error message "Can't backup. Reformat the disk. Files can still be read but the drive can no longer be used for back-ups. Get a new external drive. Run back-ups as soon as possible."
I have not seen this problem before, and would recommend that you look through the Time Machine troubleshooting information at http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
For instance, http://pondini.org/TM/B1.html or http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html could help in your situation.  I'm assuming (but probably shouldn't) that you've verified that your hard drive doesn't need repair (another Disk Utility function) and that there is still a Time Machine backup on that drive - look for the directory Backups.backupdb.
I hope that helps.  If not, perhaps someone with more Time Machine knowledge will pop along soon to help you further.

    Hi,
has anyone else had the problem that after the Lion upgrade its not possible to even really access your external time machine?
i have a 1TB Samsung HD103SI Media and when it tries to boot up it wont show in finder, i can see it in the disk drive utility and try to repair it but it only gets me an error saying i have to reformat that drive?
i hope this can somehow be fixed otherwise all my backups are gone

    Hi,
Sorry to hear about your Issue...
Was your Samsung Formatted to Mac OS Entended (journaled) when you first started using it with TM...?
If so see the Troubleshooting Section in this Link to Pondinis excellent Tips on Time Machine...

  • Time machine does not recognize my external drive

I have a perfectly good IOgear externaldrive with four partitions which I have used for years to backup files from variuos macs.
Upon connecting the drive to backup my current imac (os 10.6.8), it informed me that time machine would erase one of the 4 partitions in order to do the backup. Fine .After this happened, the partition simply disappeared from the Time machine menu, so I attempted to re-mount the external drive. The computer then gave me a message- 'the diskyou have mounted is not recognized by this computer.' Not very informative.
I attempted to use disk utility to repair the disk, no luck. Although botht the System disk and my external drive are recognized as in the same format, the external drive is 'not mounted' Tried disk repair, but  says it cannot repair the disk.
Very disheartening, since I have used this external drive for years and have collected a massive number of files on it. Moreso since the system one depends upn for security ends up destroying your files My fear is that the information is not retrievable, that the drive will have to be reformatted, if that's possible. Any  suggestions would be appreciated..>????

Yep, certainly looks that way. For 5 or 6 years I've been happily culling, backing up, and restoring files from/to my external drive, neatly arranged in 4 partitions.Ten minutes with Time Machine, and all that seems to be lost. I'm sorry I ever set eyes on that ugly little icon on my desktop.I can certainly understand an error occuring while erasing a partition, but rendering the entire drive useless and unretrievable? This should never happen, not in this day and age.
Sorry for the rant, but I'll never use Time Machine again...

  • Time Machine Does not find My Book World Edition NAS

I have been using Time Machine for over 2 years with a WD My Book World Edition NAS (White Light WD10000H1NC).  Recently the backups stopped.  When I tried to reconnect to the drive I found that I could not located the drive in TimeMachine with what I thought was the backup drive name.  Currently when I open Time Machine there is a share drive in list, but with a different name than I expected (WD_Backup on "bestback-backup") and when I try to connect to the drive it fails.  I know the NAS drive is working correctly as I can connect to the drive in finder by mounting via "Connect to Server" with the name smb://bestback  and I can see all my public folders.  When I look in Finder I see two share drives, bestback and bestback-backup.  However I cannot connect to "bestback-backup" and not sure how.  I believe my issue is that the original backup, must be on the share drive bestback-backup, but not sure how to reconnect or remount it.  I have gone into the WD configuration and confirmed the drive is named "bestback".

I have the NAS mounted in finder and can access the drive files in "Public" with no issue.  I can't run any DiskUtility on that drive. I also can't see the TimeMachine backup folders which leads me to believe TimeMachine is not looking for that specific drive.
Basically TimeMachine shows an option to connect to a "share" drive that I can't seem to mount.  That same name appears in finder sidebar, but is "unmounted".  I have tried mounting this other drive as a server using the name shown, but without any luck.
Not sure how to mount this other drive, which may be a folder or related to the original NAS.  It seems like the NAS is partitioned or I need to mount to a specific folder within the NAS?

  • HT3275 (After an OS upgrade to Mountain Lion) Time Machine does not find the backup on my time capsule; it insists on a new backup.

    (Self explanatory, I hope.)

That seems unusual unless you changed drives.
If you upgraded the drive it sees the computer as a different one to the original backup..
I am not sure that it isn't better to do a fresh backup but you can try and inherit the old backup..

  • Time Machine does not see a Time Capsule external drive

Time Machine will not recognize an external drive attached to my Time Capsule, even though it did so last week. How do I get it working again?
Until last week, I was using Time Machine to back up to a Verbatim 2 TB drive attached to a Time Capsule. It occasionally hung, requiring me to restart the Time Capsule in order to get backups working again, so I bought a Seagate 2 TB drive to replace the Verbatim in case the problem was a flaky drive. Now I can't get Time Machine to recognize either disk when the disk is attached to the Time Capsule.
Both disks are formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Both disks work correctly when I attach them directly to my Mac. When I attach either disk to the Time Capsule, Airport Utility shows the external drive, shows that sharing is enabled, and I can even mount the Time Capsule with Finder and see the external disk with Finder. But when I try to Select Disk in Time Machine Preferences, whether or not the Time Capsule is mounted with Finder, Time Machine Preferences doesn't see the disk—the only choices of disk are My User Account on the Time Capsule, and Other Time Capsule.
Restarting my Mac and restarting the Time Capsule does not help. Software and firmware updates are (and have been) up to date. I'm running OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 and Time Capsule version 7.6.4.
To reiterate, this was working a week ago. How do I get it working again?

If nothing in your configuration has changed, you can try plugging the disks one at a time directly into your mac, run Disk Utility and perform a Repair Disk. If any errors are displayed, rerun Repair Disk until there are none. Then try them back on the Time Capsule.

  • If i have Time Machine backed up on an external hard drive, do i just plug the drive into another macbook pro and all my stuff is in the new computer?  also, does it matter if the new computer is running Lion when the backed up info came from Snow Leopard

    No and Yes
Don't use TM for this purpose, clone your drive to an external, plug the external into another MBP and reboot from it. Please note that booting a machine that came with Lion may not be possible from a drive with Snow Leopard.

time machine does not appear to backup an external HD.  how do I get that included in the backup?

In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-C, or select
    Go ▹ Computer
from the menu bar. A window will open showing all mounted volumes. Select the one in question and open the Info window. What is shown as the Format in the General section? If it's not "Mac OS Extended," Time Machine can't back up the volume.

  • How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • I am having trouble installing.  downloaded Mavericks but it will not let me install to hard drive, says that is reserved for Time Machine.  I have an external hard drive, but disconnected that before download.

I downloaded Mavericks but can't get past the install; it thinks my hard drive is reserved for Time Machine.  I have an external hard drive but dis-connected that before download.
I have Time Machine turned off.

Check to see if you have a file name Backups.backupdb on the disk drive.
If the installer sees such a file it assumes that the disk drive is being used by Time Machine.
