Time Machine doesn't acknowledge initial backup

I purchased a Time Capsule and quickly and happily built a new 802.11n home wireless network with it. Yay. Then I hooked up my iMac to the Time Capsule via ethernet to do my initial Time Machine backup, knowing that it would take a LONG time (~400GB). Well, it took about 3 days to complete (which seems suspiciously slow...), but anyway, it finished sometime in the middle of the night. In the morning I looked at the Time Capsule and sure enough, there was the big-*** "sparse bundle" backup. Time Machine seemed to be in the middle of doing a relatively small backup, about 140MB, which I figured were the changes since I began the initial backup a few days before. However, I wished to unplug the ethernet and let it continue wirelessly, so I did so. However, Time Machine seemed to just hang there with the backup no longer progressing. Since I could simply have it redo the backup a little later without any real data loss, I just stopped the backup mid-progress. I unplugged the ethernet cable and the world seemed well. Then I clicked in Time Machine to begin a new backup.
Of course, I expected this backup to be a rather small one, but I realized that Time Machine was about to begin another ~400GB backup! In fact, there was no information in the "Last Backup" field, so apparently Time Machine could not see the massive initial backup and was about to start all over again. Well, I am NOT about to wait another 3 days for it to do that, especially if the problem reoccurs, so I halted the backup and set Time Machine to "off."
Now, what to do? Why can't Time Machine see the initial backup? Why is it trying to do another full backup (very little data changed on my system in the 3 days)? Did my stopping the "hourly" backup somehow "break" things?
Advice? Thoughts?

I'm not sure how the sparsebundle is identified by the computer, but if it is uniquely identified by the network connection used (ethernet, airport, firewire networking, etc.) then it could very well not identify the previous sparsebundle you made via Ethernet as being the one for your computer via Airport. I dont remember this being the case for me when I had my PowerBook backing up to my PowerMac via both Airport and/or Firewire networking, but I could be wrong...it was a while ago. Even though you seem to want to lean away from this, I'd recommend remaking it and just letting it go. You can use your computer in the mean time and allow the process to run in the background. It will pause and resume as the backup disk is available until the process is complete.

  • Time Machine Stalls While Performing Initial Backup

I have a 2008 macbook pro 13" with a 320GB internal HD which includes a Bootcamp partition.  I have been trying without success to do a Time Machine backup on this entire drive.  The Time Machine setup includes a backup of all files with the exception of the Bootcamp partition which is grayed out on the Time Machine setup dialog.  My backup device is a portable usb 1TB drive.  The initial backup keeps stalling after an hour of two with 20GB to 50GB of 243GB backed up when it quits.  Time Machine says "backup failed."  The console logs for the past several failures are below.  Does anyone know what is wrong here?

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
That last line is the problem AFAICS; you are trying to backup a file or folder that you do not own. "UUIDs don't match..."
I suggest starting by running DU repair on all HDs and repairing permissions.
You might also see if you can exclude some suspicious folders or do a binary folder exclusion: ie:
Exclude half your folders. It you can backup, add half the remaining folders, etc.
If you cannot backup the first batch, exclude half of that first half until you eventually arrive at the errant folder. Then you can diagnose the cause.
Usually, however, repairing permissions fixes these kinds of errors.

Backing up to a thumb drive - time machine doesn't delete older backups when it's full. I will have to erase and re-do the drive. Why?

    You are both right.
    Time Machine can backup FROM:
It cannot back up a USB thumb drive.
    Time  Machine can backup TO:
•A USB thumb drive (but most aren't large enough, and are very, very slow)

  • Time Machine stuck halfway through initial backup

I've been having trouble getting Time Machine to complete its initial backup. After having tried many of the suggestions offered throughout various posts here and elsewhere, I'm really at a loss. My setup:
    * G5 Quad running 10.5.3
    * 250GB internal drive (Boot volume)
    * 750GB internal drive, split into 2 partitions, one of which I've designated as my Time Machine drive
    * Drobo connected via USB with 2 500GB drives in it.
Every time I try to get my initial backup going, I get 107.41GB (of 157.37GB) into it, then TM just hangs. For hours. Even days. No errors, no response, no forward motion. I can't stop it unless I kill the backupd process via the command line.
I've tried the following suggestions to get it working which I've found elsewhere:
    1) Repartitioning and zeroing out the 750GB drive, formatting it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    2) Deleting and rebuilding the spotlight index on all Volumes
    3) Excluding numerous folders from TM, including Applications, Caches, my Aperture library, Desktop and trashes.
    4) Repairing the permissions on my boot volume.
    5) Trashing the TM preferences and starting again.
    6) Trashing the incomplete backup and trying that again.
I always end up with the same thing, hanging at that point. As an aside, is there any simple way to figure out what file it's trying to copy here?
For the record, here's what's in my console log from my most recent attempt:
Jun 9 10:05:35 Mothership /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[272]: Told to rescan.
Jun 9 10:06:42 Mothership /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[272]: Backup requested by user

Jun 9 10:08:36 Mothership /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[272]: No pre-backup thinning needed: 188.84 GB requested (including padding), 447.14 GB available
Any ideas you may have are much appreciated.

  • Time Machine doesn't connect to backup volume

I am trying to 'Enter the Time Machine' and it simply hangs. It tries to connect to the server but gets stuck on 'Connecting with backup volume. Eventually, I get the error message "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup - the backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Larry's iMac.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."
I think everything I had in the Time Machine has been lost as it shows 998GB of 998gb free. Annoying but not disastrous as my iMac hard drive is working fine. I just want to be able to backup before upgrading to Yosemite.
    I'm on OSX 10.8.5
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

  • Time Machine Doesn't Seem to Backup Titles and Keywords in iPhoto

    Hi
I have just noticed that Time Machine does not seem to backup certain metadata attached to the photos. Do you know if I am doing something wrong here?
    Using iPhoto version 7.1.5.
    Thanks

Someone was doing manual backups of their photos and I said - 'why don't you just use time machine'. I assumed it kept everything - but I thought I would check.
    What I did
    1. Opened iPhoto in Finder
    2. Entered Time Machine
    3. Found an example Photo I wanted to Restore (I chose a photo with a different Title to the 'name' of the photo (given to it by the camera) and one with a keyword).
    4. In Time Machine I could see the correct Title, but not the Keyword.
    5. Selected it > Restore
    6. Photo restored after giving a 'Duplicate' warning. Photo restored only has the 'name' but not the Title or the Keyword.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks

  • Time Machine doesn't recognize past backups anymore

My Macbook pro just came back from being repaired (issue with the video display).
I think they had to replace the logic board or graphics card or both - but I'm not sure.
Everything works fine now... except for Time Machine.
Before the Macbook Pro was shipped off I would backup regularly to an external hard drive.
While my Macbook was gone I had to use some of the backup files from within the Backups.backupdb file system. So on my Powerbook G4 with Tiger I had to go in manually and copy files over. No big deal... or so I thought.
Now Time Machine does not recognize the past backups from before I shipped the MacbookPro.
It just wants to start an entirely new backup again.
Is there a way I can get Time Machine to recognize my old backup again?
I'd hate to have to go in manually from now on. It's not exactly convenient.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, I didn't explain that well...
So here is what I'm typing in and what I'm getting back (the name of my computer being "Jason Argo's Computer":
Last login: Thu Jul 17 22:22:16 on ttys000
    Macintosh:~ Jason$ cd /Volumes/Chubs/Backups.backupdb
    Macintosh:Backups.backupdb Jason$ xattr -p com.apple.backupd.BackupMachineAddress Jason Taylor's Computer
I don't know why but I'm getting nothing back now. Before I was getting errors saying no such directory exists. I've typed in ls as well and get nothing.
    Any ideas?

  • Time machine takes forever on initial backup, progress bar randomly resets

When I first tried to run Time Machine I was sure that it would be simple, as Apple Software generally is. I was warned by another user that the first backup might take a while, so I began the backup on a Friday night (the day my crispy new external 320GB Seagate drive arrived). When I went to bed it was on around 24GB of approx 65GB of data. When I got up the next morning, it had only backed up 27GB!
Another problem I had a couple of times was after the backup had been going for 3-4 hours it would reset itself and start all over again! In other words the progress bar got 50% of the way through and then went back to 0%. This was obviously extremely annoying, and prompted me to stop the process, reformat the backup drive and search for some more answers in the internet.
After a full Saturday of fluffing around, calling my friend who has Time Machine working OK and watching the little blue bar creep along at speeds like 1.5MB/s (according to activity monitor) I finally managed to get it to work!
I've summarised what I did below:
    _Formatting your Time Machine drive_
In the Disk Utility, select the drive and choose “Partition”
    Press the “Options…” button.
Use "Apple Partition Map" partition scheme if the disk will be used with Time Machine and a PowerPC-based Mac.
Use "GUID" partition scheme if the disk will be used with Time Machine and a Intel-based Mac.

    _Spotlight may interfere_
Turn off indexing for Spotlight on the Time Machine drive
    In the Spotlight control panel
    Click the privacy button
Click the + button and choose your Time Machine backup drive
This will mean that Spotlight will not try to index the drive while the backup is happening.
    _Excluding files_
In the Time Machine Control Panel
    Click Options…
    Do not back up:
Press the + button and choose the system folder
Choose “Excluded all system files “ in the dialogue box that comes up.
See the following link for more info on this step:

Are you running it over wireless or ethernet?
We particularly advise initial backup to be done over ethernet otherwise the job has this tendency not to finish. The fact is wireless has errors.. and error correction doesn't work very well during the initial copying.. TM does a verify of the backup once it finishes.. I think this is the 5sec mark.. and keeps building as it discovers files that don't match. It can also be spotlight indexing.  What it is doing is good.. doing it over wireless is very bad. It has to read both sides.. then compare then decide if there is a corruption to copy the file again.. then compare again.
It can also be a file is actually corrupt on the source disk.
My inclination is to kill it. Even if you have to restart from scratch.. over ethernet it copies at about 60GB an hour.. it should complete overnight with hours to spare.
Do a verify of the source disk before you start. And load in widget to get actual log messages from TM.
    See A1 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Pondini also has some stuff about backups taking far too long.
See D section in reference above.. also how to cancel a TM backup. (other than turn it off).

  • Time machine doesn't delete old backups when disk is full

TM disk is 750GB. It tells me there is not enough room for backup…then I look into TM and find there ARE NO BACKUPS anymore. (There were a few days ago.) All backups are gone, except for one two days ago, which was when I began getting the "no room" error.
I assume I've lost everything, as the TM disk shows only the backup from 2 days ago. True?
Do I just format and start again?
Is there a fix for this "no room" message? (It says oldest backups are deleted when disk becomes full. But it doesn't do it.)
    Do people rely on this?

How much data is TM backing-up? (What's shown for +Estimated size of full backup+ under the exclusions box in TM Preferences > Options?)
Note that your Time Machine disk should, in most cases, be at least twice the size of the data it's backing-up. See #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
It appears that Time Machine needed to do a large backup, perhaps a full one, for some reason, and deleted as many old backups as it could (but it won't ever delete the last remaining one, as that would leave you with no backup at all), trying to make room.
If in doubt, Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages for that run here, along with the amount of data that TM is backing-up.

  • Time Machine will not complete initial backup

I reformatted my external LaCie USB 2.0 drive 2X now (even zeroing once and set partition map to GUID) and TM gets hung on the initial backup. I'm on my third try now, and it gets hung each time at exactly 62.3G. mdworker keeps running 98% CPU power also. This seems strange, because I have the backup drive selected in Spotlight's Privacy window not to index the drive, but it seems it keeps trying. Anyone have a clue to what's going on? I'm ready to go back to SuperDuper for backups.

Having EXACTLY the same problem with one macbook.. nothing special in any way about this one at all.. the 10.5 was a clean install and all updates are installed (10.5.2), no special characters, no disk errors, no permission errors, no volume errors, no fsck errors.. removed and rebuilt indexes, tried several different FW drives, reformatted FW drives, tried a USB drive, tried everything I could think of..
    no deal.
I get an error on copying a single file right before the error 11.. but these are different random files and those specific files appear OK otherwise. (ive tried this about 30 times now)
I also (sometimes) get an kernel I/O error on the disk1s2 (the fw drive) but there is nothing wrong with it.. and since i've tried three different ones.. and I am able to run a bu from another machine to these drives.
come on apple engineers... give us an answer !

  • Time machine will not perform initial backup

    Hey,
time machine is not performing my initial backup, this is the error it gives
    http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/6425/screenshot20100419at522.png
The error shows up anywhere from the first few megs to the first few gigs during the backup (and the backup is incredablly slow, I don't know why...(not like the apple videos where it goes 0.5gigs/s))
It is the second partition on a 1TB USB drive.
I tried several formats (pretty much everything in disk utilities).
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks

Shoot, my partition scheme is MBR and not GUID or Apple....
Is there anyway to fix this without wiping the entire harddrive (I don't have enough storage in everything that I have to store stuff to backup this entire harddrive (at least 10 years worth of stuff))
It's risky. iPartition, and perhaps some other 3rd-party apps, claims to be able to change formats and/or the partition map without erasing, but they very prominently recommend backing the drive up first. And it costs about half what a new HD will.
If the things in the other partition aren't backed-up some other way, your best bet might be to get a larger internal HD, so you can keep all your originals on it, and reformat the external and let TM start over.
Or, get a second drive, and let it back up both your internal HD and the current external.

  • Time Machine doesn't seem to backup my recent data

I have a porblem that TM doesn't seem to be backing up my recent data.
If I enter TM, the 'Now' tab on the timeline shows me exactly what is in my folders, or in iPhoto etc.
If I go back to even the most recent TM date (eg 1 hour ago) then my recent data is missing.  Specifically, I can see data from a about a month ago, but nothing kore recent than that is shown.  So folders has no recent files, and iPhoto has no Events added in the last month or so.
I first picked this problem up in January, and what I now notice is that my data definitely refects changes since January.  So this seems to not be a problem with TM working with my user account (I have multiple user accounts on the iMac, and TM is working for the others).  TM is working but seems to have a lag of about a month!

    Doug:
I don't have an answer for you, but I noticed the same problem while spot checking my backups, as I occasionally do. Troubling, if I can’t depend on TM to back up properly.
Booting into Safe Mode (the only “simple” remedy I could find on the Internet) did nothing.
The missing files all occur within the last month. Although the missing files are IN my home folder, most new files in my home folder ARE properly backed up, including the Desktop Folder.
At the same time, I noticed that the problem seems confined to one group of subfolders. As an experiment, I duplicated the enclosing folder (renamed as “xxx copy”), performed a Time Machine backup, and found THAT folder would back up properly. So, the contents of “xxx” won’t back up, but duplicating it as “xxx copy” WILL back up.
I can also move all of the original CONTENT of “xxx” to a new folder, and it WILL back up properly.
I can also place a new file in the original problem folder "xxx", and it WILL back up. (Go figure.)
There’s something about the enclosing folder “xxx” that won’t allow folders/files after a certain date (about a month ago) to be backed up, whereas a duplicate of it WILL back up. At the same time, putting a new file in "xxx" WILL back up.
Now I’m worried about what other folders might be a problem. Fortunately, I back up twice with an off site system . But I would like to know what’s wrong with TM, so I can depend on it. Hopefully someone can weigh in with a proper  diagnosis and "fix" so we can depend on TM again.

  • Time Machine doesn't recognize old backup after logic board replacement

I recently had my logic board on my MacBook Pro replaced and when I tried to backup, Time Machine did not recognize the old backup on the drive and tries to create a new one. The drive is mounted fine.
Is there a way to continue using my old backup, or do I need to delete it and create a new one?

Hi there I've just had this problem on my computer too but is there a possibly easier way to explain what is on this site...
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
I read through but got lost about half way down when it says:
"The last bit of information needed is the old MAC address. Open Terminal and change directory to the root of the Time Machine backup database, then get the old MAC address:...."
I was in terminal but couldn't work it out. Is this not a good idea to stumble around in if i have no idea what I'm doing? Seems difficult but I really wanna work it out because my Time Machine hard drive is full so I can't just get to back up everything from scratch and don't wanna delete what is already on there. Any help would be much appreciated!!
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
If you're not comfortable with the procedure, I'd advise against it. Mucking about with Terminal can cause all manner of problems.
But you can find your Mac's Ethernet Address via the *System Profiler* app. Click the Apple logo in your menubar, then +About This Mac,+ then +More Info+ to start it.
Select Network in the sidebar, then Ethernet in the upper panel. Near the bottom of the lower panel, under Ethernet, you should see *Mac Address.* It's 6 hex numbers (12 characters), separated by colons. Omit the colons when you type it into Terminal.
As noted in the Troubleshooting Tip, it's easy to do this wrong, get no error message, and have it not work (been there, done that!).
If it doesn't work, your only choices are to erase the drive and start over, or get a larger one and transfer your backups to it (see item #18 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum).
How big is your TM drive, vs. how much it's backing up? TM usually needs 2-3 times the space of what it's backing-up (see item #1 of the FAQ Tip).
Are you so concerned about not losing your backups because you've been deleting things from your internal HD, relying on TM to keep it's copies? If so, post back -- that's a terrible idea.

  • Time Machine doesn't recognize my backups now that I restored from it.

After installing Lion 7.1 from the app store overy my Snow Leopard, my mid-2009 2.8 GHz MBP (15") started acting wonky . . . Would freeze up randomly, need to be hard-reset, would open up windows on boot-up that I DID NOT have open before (even if I unchecked the option to "re-open windows when logging back in"), would not remember certain preferences, etc.
Called Apple tech, all he could suggest was format/reinstall using the fun, new recovery feature in Lion, if the 7.2 update didn't somehow magically fix my problems. It didn't, so I made sure my time machine back-up was complete, booted into recovery, wiped the Macintosh HD, and re-installed Lion from the web. Took forever, but no problems, so I get to the part where I want to recover from Time Machine, and say to restore everything expcept my settings (in case something from settings before was causing the issues). It does all of this, no problem, and I log into my Mac and everything looks the same as before.
NOW, Time Machine wants to back-up, as usual, and I think it will look at the system and say, "Oh, yeah, I've got all this . . . I mean, you just restored from me, so I'll just take a few snapshots or whatever and back up every hour (or whatever I do)." But Time Machine ain't saying that. Time Machine says," Oh, you have a bunch of crap on this hard drive already, but I need more room to back up your computer." And I'm saying, "No buddy, that's not a bunch of crap, that IS the back-up of this computer. Just reference that!"
Except, see, I'm SAYING that to my computer . . . But it can't hear me, obviously. How do I get my computer to understand that I don't need a new back-up from scracth, that the hard-drive I restored from IS the TM backup?
Sorry for not being able to explain this problem more efficiently. Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah, and the other thing is, now I CAN'T go back in time using my Time Machine back-up . . . It says I've never backed up now (I guess because this is a fresh install that's TECHNICALLY correct), but I restored from this Time Machine file . . . Surely I've done something wrong that can be fixed. Help, please?

  • Time Machine doesn't stop to backup

Time Machine is backing up and up and up… The progress bar is full in the TM preference panel but underneath it says: "500 MB from 500 MB" and then "504 MB from 504" and so on. This goes on for a long time and TM eats up approx. 10 GB of disk space every hour.
What I think is, that the problem could be, that I watched peer-to-peer Internet TV with Zattoo. Does somebody know where Zattoo stores the data? I'd like to exclude this folder from TM.

I take that back, it hung at 1.3GB for a few minutes and then went back to "Preparing..." Then it went to "Backing up XXX of 200MB". When XXX reached 200MB, it climbed a little more and then it finally went into "Finishing Backup..."
My Console log shows some messages about being "unable to rebuild path cache for source item":
