Time Machine drive can't be read, but also cannot be reformatted - fixes?
Hello!
I have a 500 GB Maxtor hard drive which I use with my MacBook Pro for a Time Machine volume. Last night, it had no problem - it could be read, and time machine backed up properly. Today? Nothing. I looked in Disk Utility, only to find that while the drive is listed in the source panel, it has no partitions. I clicked on "Erase", and everything was grayed out. I clicked on "Partition", and it says that the disk is too small to hold partitions.
Disk utility, on my G4 running Tiger, shows the drive with a blank, 2-Terabyte partition - yet it's only 500 GB. I can have finder copy files to and from the disc, and it seems to function normally - it just won't show up on any other machine. I also can't get Disk utility to partition it correctly.
There was no unusual noise last night, no extra heat or vibration, or any other outward sign of a hardware failure. That doesn't completely rule it out, I suppose, but it limits the possibilities somewhat. Considering how the G4 can at least copy files to and from it, it does not seem to have failed completely.
Does this signify a hardware failure with the HDD, or a directory problem? Is there some way I can reformat it via Console that might work better?

Does this signify a hardware failure with the HDD,
it would seem so.
or a directory problem? Is there some way I can reformat it via Console that might work better?
no. if you can't do it from disk utility, you can't do it from a mac, period. while the problem is likely that the drive is failing you can try reformatting it from a different OS like windows or Linux. you can make an Ubuntu CD
http://www.ubuntu.com/
then boot from the CD and try formatting it from there.

Moved Time Machine drive - can't see backup.
I was having trouble with my Time Machine drive, which was connected by USB to my Airport Extreme. I moved the drive to a USB connector on my MacBook Pro to improve the speed, and after formatting the drive, made a complete, new backup with Time Machine, which took about 8 hours.
Then I moved the drive back to the AirPort and told Time Machine to use it for backup. Time Machine doesn't see the earlier backup (I can verify that it's there using the Finder) and is now doing another complete backup of my MBP.
What's wrong here? How can I tell Time Machine to use the backup it made yesterday instead of starting over?
WaltActually, Tech Support told me that they support only Apple Time Capsules connected to the Air Port Extreme. They most certainly do NOT support using Seagate drives such the ones I have been using successfully for over three years, on two MBPs.
I firmly believe (but Apple does not want to hear this) that my problem originated with the erratic WIFI connections since I upgraded to Lion, which has been discussed at length in the forums. Time Machine reported backups failing when the WIFI connection could nto be restored after waking from sleep.
My wife's MBP, running Snow Leopard, is working just fine on the same hardware.
Walt
EDIT: I tried "Inheriting" the backup that was made via the direct USB connection, but it still doesn't show up in the TM history. The tmutil program is interesting - it does distinguish between the "machine_directory" - the backups.backupdb folder that was made by the direct USB backup, and the sparse_bundle file that was created by the AirPort backup. -
Time Machine no longer backs up data, but also doesn't display "Failed"
Hello. I've had problems with Time Machine for a while now. First, instead of just performing an incremental backup, almost every day it tries to back up about 59GB of data, far more data than I'm changing. Then it started to fail after the first successful backup of the day. Once it begins to fail the only thing I've found fixes it is completely wiping the backup and starting from scratch. Now most recently it starts to backup (once again about 59GB of data) and then after about 1GB is backed up it just stops, with no message of failure but also not reporting that it backed up anything.
If you are using a Windows partition or the VMware/Parallels equivelents, you might have a big chunk of data out there that does need backing up. Also, if you manually back it up, does it work?

If it doesn't the your library is damaged and needs to be fixed. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download IPhoto Library Manager 4 for OS XC 10.6.8 and iPhoto 8.1.2 and later or iPhoto Library Manager 3 (for OS X 10.5.8 and iPhoto 7.1.5 and earlier) and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 3) or Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 4) option.
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?
Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

how can I get all of my music off of my laptop and onto an external hard drive? I bought a new hard drive for it but it got turned into a Time Machine drive... I want to have all of my music on the external hard drive, and NOT on my macbook pro. Thanks everyone
Hello lramospsych,
To move your iTunes media library to a different location, take a look at the article below to walk you through that process. Make sure that you have everything organized before you move everything over.

I have an iMac that had drive problems last winter. Took the iMac to the Apple Store and they reinstalled everything and now it works again. Only thing is that my external Time Machine drive is screwed up now. Its 1.5 TB.
I had the Time Machine drive partioned into two parts. One partion was for an emergency bootup using carbon copy cloner. That partion I can open and mounts on my desktop. The other partion was Time Machine. It once upon a time opened and mounted without a password.
It requests a password to unlock even though I never had it password protected before the iMac drive problems. And so now it won't mount the drive.
I can go to Disk Utilities and I can see Time Machine with both partions. The Carbon Copy partion is mounted. The Time Machine partion is not mounted. For this reason I can't select it and erase it.
What the heck am I supposed ot do now to erase it and start over. Any help would be appreciated. I really don't want to go and buy another drive.
KevinTriple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context. -
How can i put music drive AND a time machine drive on wireless network?
Right now I have a MacBook with ONE external drive with my music and movies… and ANOTHERexternal drive for my backups.
I would LOVE to figure out how to hook both the music drive and the time machine drive to a wireless router so the only plug I have for my laptop is the power plug.
I already have a NetGear wireless router… but it only has ethernet ports out, no usb.
What would be the best/easiest way to network these two external hard drives?
tx!Another option, where you can still utilize your existing drives, is to consider a dedicated NAS device that supports both Time Machine and iTunes functions. One such NAS device is the Synology DS415+. It would be far superior than what you have now. Albeit at an additional cost.

Can I use a TIme Machine drive of my Macbook to transfer data to a new IMac
Hi everyone
I currently have a 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro as my main machine, using System 10.6.4.
I'm keen add a second computer which will allow me to run both systems at the same time.
My day job is a music producer, so I have plenty of audio programmes and plug ins, that are all intel spec and up to date, so I'm aware of tranferring new password codes etc to a new hard drive however I wondered if there were any potential issues transferring the data from my Macbook Pro and or it's Time Machine Drive to a new iMac ? I'm guessing not as they are both Intel Machines and will be running the same operating system, but any guidance to re-assure me would be greatfully received.
Many thanks in advance to any replies.
RobertI wouldn't use Migration Assistant for anything but to transfer your Home folder assuming you wanted to operate out of the same account on both machines. That's certainly the easiest approach. It's what i do between my Mac Pro and my MBP.
But Migration Assistant is not a tool for maintaining synchronization between two computers. For that you can either have the two computers on the same local network and sync them over the network with third-party software. Or you can maintain an external "common" backup that is used to keep the two computers up to date using third-party software.
My choice is the common backup on an external hard drive. I use a notebook sized drive because it's easy to take with me when I travel. I backup the most recently changed computer to the external drive. Then connect it to the other computer and do an incremental update. This keeps both computers in sync. You just need to remember which was the most recently changed computer.
If you have a local network, then when both computers are connected to the network you can enable File Sharing on one of the computers, then sync the two with third-party software.

Time Machine suddenly can't find network drive (WD MyBook)
I have a Mac Mini running OS X 10.5, with a 2 TB external USB drive (Western Digital MyBook) which my family uses for Time machine backups. It has worked fine for months. Suddenly, about 3 weeks ago but unnoticed until today, my wife's MacBook (OS X Lion) stopped backing up, complaining that the backup volume could not be found. It says her last baclup was 20 days ago.
"That's odd," I said, "I haven't been getting any errors..." and then I looked at Time Machine on my MacBook Pro (Lion), and discovered my last successful backup was 15 days ago.
Both of us were getting "The backup volume is unavailable."
Sure enough, I found myself unable to mount the two external USB drives on the Mini from my MacBook Pro. I could mount the internal hard drive, but couldn't see the external drives even when connecting as admin.
So I rebooted the Mini, and now I can mount the drive via Finder, but Time Machine still can't fint the volume. If I click Setect Disk, all I get is "Set Up Other Time Capsule." No network drives appear at all. I rebooted my MacBook Pro, and now Time Machine has turned itself off, and I still can't see the Mini's external drives in Time Machine, although I can access them just fine in Finder.
The Mini itself backs up to the Green Drive with no problem.
I've run DU and clicked Repair Disk. No problems were found. Repair Permissions is greyed out.Apologies for the typos above. Also, it's apparently a MyBook Elite. So says the latest firmware updater from WD, which I ran to make sure my drive firmware was up to date.
I'm also going to try upgrading the Mini to Lion. Will post the results. -
Getting new external drive, can I switch back up time machine drives?
I don't want to loose the info time machine has already captured on my external hard drive called B1, if I install a new hard drive B2, can I just copy B1 to B2 and then point time machine to B2?
Not sure what the process would be, but I want to get rid of B1 as a time machine drive and add b2 and not loose any info already captured.
Suggestions?Related question:
I partitioned my 500GB external drive, 30GB in G-1 for a bootable system (currently 10.4.10) and the remaining space in G-2 for Time Machine.
I now want to resize the partitions on the fly in Terminal, to free up 20GB more for TM, but I plan to use Carbon Copy Cloner to first make a backup of both G-1 and G-2, just in case.
If I lose data resizing the partitions and then have to restore the TM backup files from the clone, will Time Machine recognize its earlier files and pick up where it left off, or will it start over?
Aside: Disk Utility in Leopard indicates it will resize partitions on the fly without losing data, but I have read in other threads that data has been lost anyway.

Do I need to use all the hard drive for time machine or can I partition it
Do I need to use all the hard drive for time machine or can I partition it
You cannot partition a TC disk.
See pondini about mixing data and backups.. but remember this.. the TC has no way to back itself up and TM cannot backup files on the TC. Anything not backed up on the TC will be lost at some future point.

I made the darnest mistake when I tried cleaning up my time machine drive by deleting some of the "back-up" restore points.
Since then, the external drive does not appear anymore on my mac's desktop. Nor does it appear on my windows OS laptop.
I tried using DISK UTILITY on my Mac and the drive appears there. I was able to run Repair Disk, though No Errors appear. I "cannot eject" using the EJECT button at the top of the application as it prompts me with a message
"EJECT FAILED --
The disk “WD Ext HDD 1021 Media” could not be unmounted.
Make sure that all applications and files are closed on this disk."
Same goes when I try using a WINDOWS OS machine. It does not appear on Windows Explorer. Though when it does appear in the "eject list".
I assume that deleting some of the restore points (at random) was the cause of this.
How can I repair it? I have some sentimental and personal files (i.e. family pictures) that are also stored on the drive.
Thanks in advance.Other than the Disk Repair from the Disk Utility, I would suggest resetting the PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243.
Tha's kind of a last ditch effort though. Can you put it in another mac computer with the mac os? Does it show up there? -
My old Mac died. I had it backed up to a Time Machine external drive (fortunately). I have a new Mac. I want to get my entire iTunes library from the Time Machine drive to the new Mac. I want not only the music files but all the "library" metadata, playlists, song rankings, unique genre designations. How do I do this?
No backup is a huge mistake.

After Kernal Panic can't see Time Machine Drive
I have a usb iSub speaker.
Apparently it is NOT compatible with Leopard but I have been following certain threads with interest as I hate to sell it just yet.
Yesterday there was a post that said if you go into Audio MIDI Setup and change some settings, then change them back- your iSub will work!
Well when I was in the Audio MIDI Setup utility I experienced a kernal panic (first since using Leopard)
After that I was not able to boot past the Grey Apple Screen.
I even left it overnight and it would not start.
I finally reverted to my old Tiger backup external drive- I booted to that, then started my Tiger DVD,
I ran Disk Utility, then Repaired permissions and I am back up and running.
My Time Machine hard drive is not showing on my desktop though! (I have 2 external drives- one is my old Tiger cloned back up with SuperDuper- the other is my TimeMacine backup)
I tried looking for it with DiskUtility but it is not seeing it either.
Any advice would be helpful at this point.
One other thing...it seems to be writing....the case the hard drive is in has lights on it and it is blinking..and I can hear it slightly.Hello:
If I were you (and I am not), I would bundle up the repaired computer and your Time Machine drive and take it in and ask the Apple person to bring it back to life. IMHO, that should have been done the first time.
