Time Machine Drive Starts Up Every Time I Try And Open A Word File
I had this problem when I first got Leopard and now that I've upgraded to 10.6 I'm having it again. Whenever I open word and then look for a file the Time Machine drive starts to whir and I have to wait an eternity to start looking for files on my Mac, not the Time Machine drive. I can't find a setting in Word to shut off the search feature and I have Time Machine shut off from Spotlight so I can't figure out the problem. And it's not exclusive to Word. It's all programs where I have to search for a particular file, iMovie, iWeb, Final Draft, etc. Help!
try rebuilding launch services database. run the following command in terminal
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
see if that helps.

Trying to use a new, larger external hard drive for my Time Machine backup. However, every time I start the backup, it gets started then fails. And, I can't delete the few files that did save on the external. Sort of a catch 22. Any ideas?
Is it a USB hard drive? USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice. Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem. If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time. I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

When I try and open Microsoft Word 2011 documents on my IMAC they start opening one after another at a rapid speed and I can't stop it. I reboot and same thing happens. The documents open in rapid succession on their own and don't stop until I force close or after maybe 100 or more open I start getting the following message for each document attemting to open "This document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document" and then in paretheses the name of the document. After I click okay another trys to open. Any suggestions?
If you had multiple documents open and quit the app without closing all of the docs first, it will open them again when you launch the app. Open Word, and then close all the documents, you may be asked to save the document, if the document was already saved but you made changes to it before you quit the app, you may need to save the changes first, shorcut ( command and s keys). After you close all of the documents then quit the app and restart the computer. See if this works.

Time Machine same backup size every time
Anyone have any idea why Time Machine would backup the same amount every time? Every hour mine backs up 1.8 GB, unless I've added more than that to my hd.
I only back up the internal drive on my macbook to a 500 GB Time Capsule via wifi (802.11n only, 5GHz). Not that I figured it would make a difference, but it still does it if backed up via ethernet.
I've also noticed that as soon as it completes the backup, it will backup all over again - and not because an hour has passed. I'm not sure if it does this every time (but I think i does), or if it does it more than twice when it happens.
Thanks in advance!See if the following might give you some ideas as to why...
*_Incremental Backups Seem Too Large!_*
Open the Time Machine Prefs on the Mac in question. How much space does it report you have "Available"? When a backup is initiated how much space does it report you need?
Now, consider the following, it might give you some ideas:
Time Machine performs backups at the file level. If a single bit in a large file is changed, the WHOLE file is backed up again. This is a problem for programs that save data to monolithic virtual disk files that are modified frequently. These include Parallels, VMware Fusion, Aperture vaults, or the databases that Entourage and Thunderbird create. These should be excluded from backup using the Time Machine Preference Exclusion list. You will, however, need to backup these files manually to another external disk.
If you do a lot of movie editing, unless these files are excluded, expect Time Machine to treat revised versions of a single movie as entirely new files.
If you frequently download software or video files that you only expect to keep for a short time, consider excluding the folder these are stored in from Time Machine backups.
If you have recently created a new disk image or burned a DVD, Time Machine will target these files for backup unless they are deleted or excluded from backup.
*Events-Based Backups*
Time Machine does not compare file-for-file to see if changes have been made. If it had to rescan every file on your drive before each backup, it would not be able to perform backups as often as it does. Rather, it relies on a process called FSEvents. This is a system log that records changes that occur with all the directories on your Mac. Moving / copying / deleting / & saving files and folders creates events that are recorded in this log. At the beginning of each backup, Time Machine simply looks at this log to determine what has changed since the last backup. [http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/14]
Installing new software, upgrading existing software, or updating Mac OS X system software can create major changes in the structure of your directories. Every one of these changes is recorded by the OS as an event. Time Machine will backup every file that has an event associated with it since the installation.
Files or folders that are simply moved or renamed are counted as NEW files or folders. If you rename any file or folder, Time Machine will back up the ENTIRE file or folder again no matter how big or small it is.
George Schreyer describes this behavior: “If you should want to do some massive rearrangement of your disk, Time Machine will interpret the rearranged files as new files and back them up again in their new locations. Just renaming a folder will cause this to happen. This is OK if you've got lots of room on your backup disk. Eventually, Time Machine will thin those backups and the space consumed will be recovered. However, if you really want recover the space in the backup volume immediately, you can. To do this, bring a Finder window to the front and then click the Time Machine icon on the dock. This will activate the Time Machine user interface. Navigate back in time to where the old stuff exists and select it. Then pull down the "action" menu (the gear thing) and select "delete all backups" and the older stuff vanishes.” (http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html)
*TechTool Pro Directory Protection*
This disk utility feature creates backup copies of your system directories. Obviously these directories are changing all the time. So, depending on how it is configured, these backup files will be changing as well which is interpreted by Time Machine as new data to backup. Excluding the folder these backups are stored in will eliminate this effect.
*Backups WAY Too Large*
If an initial full backup or a subsequent incremental backup is tens or hundreds of Gigs larger than expected, check to see that all unwanted external hard disks are still excluded from Time Machine backups. Time Machine will attempt to backup any hard disk attached to your Mac, including secondary internal drives, that have not been added to Time Machines Exclusion list.
This includes the Time Machine backup drive ITSELF. Normally, Time Machine is set to exclude its’ own backup disk by default. But on rare occasions it can forget. When your backup begins, Time Machine mounts the backup on your desktop. (For Time Capsule/AirDisk users it appears as a white drive icon labeled something like “Backup of (your computer)”.) If, while it is mounted, it does not show up in the Time Machine Preferences “Do not back up” list, then Time Machine will attempt to back ITSELF up. If it is not listed while the drive is mounted, then you need to add it to the list.
*Recovering Backup Space*
If you have discovered that large unwanted files have been backed up, you can use the Time Machine “time travel” interface to recovered some of that space.
Launch Time Machine from the Dock icon.
Initially, you are presented with a window that represents “Today (Now)”. DO NOT make changes to file while you see “Today (Now)” at the bottom of the screen.
Click on the window just behind “Today (Now)”. This represents the last successful backup and should display the date and time of this backup at the bottom of the screen.
Now, navigate to where the unwanted file resides.
Highlight the file and click the Actions menu (Gear icon) from the toolbar.
Select “Delete all backups of <this file>”.
*FileVault / Boot Camp / iDisk Syncing*
Note: Leopard has changed the way it deals with FileVault disk images, so it is not necessary to exclude your Home folder if you have FileVault activated. Additionally, Time Machine ignores Boot Camp partitions as the manner in which they are formatted is incompatible. Finally, if you have your iDisk Synced to your desktop, it is not necessary to exclude the disk image file it creates as that has been changed to a sparsebundle as well in Leopard.
Let us know if this resolved your issue.
Cheers! -
Time machine make huge backups every time...
Since last weekend my Time Machine have been acting Up by making huge backups every time like 130 gb +. That started on Mavericks and now continued into Yosemite(I made the upgrade with the ankward belief that the upgrade would fix it...)
Is there a quick fix for this? These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
Time Machine backs up 300mb every time regardless
I love time Machine but it is giving me grief. Every hour it backs up at least 250 - 300 mb in information even if I haven't been doing anything on the computer. This process takes about 20 - 30 minutes with all of the preparing, transferring and finishing up and so it seems like all my computer does is back up data.
I have it set to back up only user's accounts, no applications or system folders. When I exam the log messages in Console, it tells me that it's backing up around 40,000 files. I can't possibly have manipulated that many files every hour, even when the computer is idle.
Other explanations like entourage mail files and parallels disk images are not the reason as I don't use the first and I've excluded parallels files from the backups.
If anyone has had this problem and solved it, I would certainly be glad to hear it.This could be a large monolithic database or package/vault being backed up... Some examples are the Entourage mail database, DEVONthink Pro database, Aperture vault, iPhoto library.
Check programs you use a lot (or that run in the background) and have a large database or package/vault. You might want to exclude these files and back them up via another application such as Backup.app, SmartBackup, etc.. -
Time Machine backs up everything every time
Hi
I've just had my hard drive replaced (as part of the Apple recall) and I have just had my external 2TB LaCie hard drive replaced as well due to a fault. I plugged the external hard drive in for the first time yesterday - partitioned it into 3 (one specifically for backups) and did a full backup and now Time Machine backs everything up each hour and takes forever - it's only backing up 4.39GB (it's taken 15 minutes to backup up 754kb). Very frustrating. Any advice would be great.
cheersYou can import directly to an external drive. Just select the external drive from the import from camera screen. The external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). You can buy them this way, or you can buy a drive formatted for Windows and reformat it yourself. Let me know if you need instructions.
For existing Events and Projects, you can move them to the external drive following these instructions.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
For videos of my children and the family, my practice is to keep everything. I just buy extra external drives to keep it on. It is very important to keep backups of everything that is irreplacable. What I do is create an archive copy of my camcorder files. I back that up rather than backing up the whole event. I import to the iMovie Event from the Archive copy. Once I know the archive copy is good, I reformat the card in my camera and shoot some more. -
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
Thank you for your response. I was able to successfully format the drives Extended journaled when they were out of the raid configuration. I was not able to format as Extended (not journaled) in the Raid configuration.

The old version is trying to open a document saved by the new. Installing the new Pages did not remove the old version. Nor did it remove the icon on the Dock. That icon still points to the old version.
Look in a folder called iWork '09 inside your Applications folder. Old Pages lives there.
New Pages is inside your Applications folder (not a sub folder).
You can have icons for both on the Dock, then you can open which one you want.
Don't delete the old version! Several features have been lost in the new. See the Pages forum for details.

I can't seem to get firefox properly running on my computer. I've installed it, I have internet connection, yet when I open a window and try to go on a site, it says 'unable to connect'
Hello Patrick O' D,
In my experience t here are two different problems with the speed of firefox on startup
# your os and setup
# firefox - and exactly what you use with it
Some factors will be down to your OS and for instance what does start up initially, many of those factors will affect other programmes/applications and not only firefox.
Some other factors depend on Firefox and how you set that up, I always like to have the option to using Firebug but realise it cold clash with other software or slow down firefox startup so I only enable it as I need it. see for instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/performance/ -
Partition and rename existing Time machine drive?
I use a 1 TB external hard drive for Time Machine backups and as extra storage for miscellaneous files - a total of 130 gigs is used (100 gigs of Time Machine backups plus 30 gigs other files). I am using Mountain Lion 10.8.5. That external drive is named "Seagate Drive"... I want to partition that drive in two 500 gig volumes and rename the first 500 gig to "Time Machine" for backups, and rename the other volume to "Extra Storage".
I understand that the existing backups should remain intact on the first volume after I partition the drive, but when I rename that first volume to "Time Machine" will the Time Machine app continue backing up to it or will Time Machine become confused because of the name change and no longer auto backup to the drive, thus requiring me to re-start a completely new full backup? ...Also after I rename the Time Machine drive volume will the Time Machine app still recognize the older backups that were recorded when the external drive had its older name?
...will any of this cause me trouble?
Thanks
I don't want to create any headaches for myself.
Thanks! You can always inherit the backup if you have problems.

More than one Time Machine drive
I'm about to upgrade to a Mac Book Pro at work, which will be my first use of Leopard on a work computer. (My Aluminum Powerbook at work sits at 10.4.11 right now.) I do have a Mac mini running Leopard at home, so I'm familiar with Time Machine. With my work computer, currently I maintain two Retrospect incremental back-up files and toggle between them. I started doing that after a Retrospect back-up file got corrupted and I no longer had any file history. With the new system, I'd like to set up two time machine drives. One would stay in my office and would be the main time machine drive. The other would be portable, and would help me keep my work backed up when I am on extended travel. I would also like to back up to the second drive at some regular interval (say weekly) when I am not traveling to keep it fairly current. Will Time Machine handle such toggling of backup drive gracefully? When I switch back to the main Time Machine drive after backing up the the portable drive, will incremental backups resume on the main drive, or will it start a full backup again?
thanks!Nope. I do not use TM as I find it to be very unreliable and poorly suited to anything other than basic backup for inexperienced users. I use other backup applications that do scheduled backups to my backup drives. I would never try to have multiple backups on a single drive as it is unsafe. If the drive were to fail or become corrupted then both backups are lost. It's not a good backup strategy in my opinion. For backup I recommend:
Backup Software Recommendations
My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

Time Machine drive disappears after Sleep
Hey peeps,
I have been trying to put my computer to SLEEP after 1-hour of inactivity as it's a family machine that is used minimally and I want to save energy. It is an early 2009 mac mini running 10.9.
When I wake the computer up, one of my external USB drives comes back, however the external USB hard drive that has my time machine drive seems to unmount itself or disconnect and I have to physically turn the power on and off to get it to come back.
I have checked DISK UTILITY and it's gone from there too.
anyone seeing this too?Hello r_dizzle,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your external hard drive. I found an article with steps you can take when an external device is not behaving as expected
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in this article:

Illustrator cc crashes moments after starting up every time on my windows 8.1 machine.
Illustrator cc crashes moments after starting up every time on my windows 8.1 machine. There are no error messages. I have reinstalled illustrator, reinstalled creative cloud, and updated my video drivers as well as the wacom drivers. I have also disconnected the internet, and illustrator still does not change from crashing roughly three seconds after loading the main program window.
When you uninstalled did you check the box to replace the Preferences? If you didn't, try that and you might try the Cleaner tool as well.
