Time Machine Email Recovery?! What happen exactly?

Hi and thanks for reading.
I have a question:
let's suppose I need to recover a mail (or a folder) of my iMail Time Machine Backup.
If I enter in TM and select the related message/folder I want to recover and click on the bottom right RECOVER button, am I going to recover it and loose all the other messages/folder structure already present in my iMail software?
In other words, if I recover a 3 months ago backup MSG or FOLDER, do I loose all the mail I got in the last 3 months?
Many thanks,
regards

If I recall correctly from when I restored a mailbox 6 months ago or so, it put the messages into some kind of "Recovered Messages" mailbox.  You should be fine.  But make sure you've got a good backup of the current messages, just in case something goes wrong.

  • Time machine backups? What happened?

My hard drive recently crashed. I had been making backups using Time Machine. The apple store put in a new hard drive and I sent my backup drive to them. The last backup was May 5, 2010. Most of the files restored were only from late 2009 and previous. What happened to the backups I had made up to May 5th? Any help in understanding what happened is appreciated. Most applications were ok but also needed updating.
What is sense of using time machine if it doesn't back up everything?

There's no telling what the Apple Store did.
Check via the "Star Wars" display; see if there's a backup from May 5 or so. If there is, and if you didn't exclude things like System Folders from your backups, just do the restore properly.

  • 40gb free space appeared after clean install of Mac OS X and time machine restore? What happened?

Recently, my computer had a display problem, and I brought it in to the Apple store to get it fixed. When they returned it, they had replaced not only the display but also the logic board, and the hard drive, and they did a clean install of the operating system. After OS X was clean installed onto my computer, I restored my files from Time Machine, but my hard drive now shows about 40 gigs more free space than I had before, when I originally brought my computer in. All my files seem to be in place. What am I missing? I was guessing that the cache of my web browsers have been cleared... But 40 Gigs seems like a lot of space to recover solely through clearing the web cache. Any ideas?

Hi, one question & one suggestion...
What possible things are connected at home but not at the store, inlude every cable, etc.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • What happens exactly during line selection

    Hi,
What happens exactly during line selection of a report.
I mean suppose I display 20 purchase orders with data in a list. When I select one line say I call ME23N.
How will only that PO be called.
    What happens internally?
    Regards,
    Subhashini

Each time you use HIDE statement, data are stored in special HIDE Area . The system inserts field name you are hiding together with its value. Current output line (SY-LINNO) is used to populate which index that entry will receive in Hide Area. That's
why HIDE statement must be entered before beginning a new line.
During line selection system variable SY-LILLI is read (index of selected line), then corresponding line in Hide Area is read and values are transported back to corresponding fields (data objects) you have hidden.
What is also important is that each list (basic, detailed) has its own Hide Area, that's why you can even use HIDE when you are already in AT LINE-SELECTION event block, hence create subsequent detialed lists. This will fill new Hide Area of detailed list and so on.
This topic is well discussed in BC405 course.

Aren't they in your iTunes library?  If so, sync them back to your phone.  If not, redownload them (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519).

From the Finder's Go menu, choose Computer:
Double-click your hard disk icon. It is usually named "Macintosh HD":
    Look for this folder:
    Drag it to the Trash.

  • Time Machine vs Backup: What is the difference?

I just bought a MacBook with Leopard, replacing my about-to-die iBook G4 with Tiger. I had Backup (the little orange umbrella icon) on the iBook, now I have both the Backup (the little orange umbrella icon) and Time Machine icon. What is the difference between what these two do? Thanks in advance.

That link does not help me. I already have read about Time Machine. I am not a technical person. I would appreciate it if someone could list for me what the differences between BackUp and Time Machine are? Do I need both? Does Time Machine do everything that BackUp does and more?

  • What happen exactly when iPad is in STOP / Standby?

    Hi and thanks for reading.
The title is quite clear as the body of this question
What happen exactly when I stop my iPad to apps etc?
I notice that my wifi is still active for certain operations: for example, I can receive push mail, facetime calls, but not skype phone calls... ??
Are core apps still on and workable while extra apps like skype not?
    What else nice to know?
    Thanks, cheers

Yes there are certain iOS core apps that are allowed to run in the background.  One of these is the Mail app so that push mail or scheduled fetch mail will work without having to have the screen on and the phone active.  the clock is another one (the built in clock that comes as part of iOS) so the alarm functions still work when the phone is asleep.  Notifications is another app that runs in the background.
However, the majority of apps and all 3rd party are incapable of running in the background (the iOS actually is designed this way, so wayward apps cannot run up data or drain the battery).  Skype, for example, is only active when open and running actively in the foreground.

  • Time Machine / Email help?

    Good morning,
I am hoping somebody is able to help as I am totally baffled by an issue I am having.
I purchased a new Macbook Pro today so decided before I formatted my old one, I would make a time machine image so I could transfer the data straight across to my new machine. I thought this would be simple but I have stumbled across an issue.
I plugged my external HDD into my new Macbook and opened time machine to transfer my files. It advised me it was not set up on the new machine, so I went ahead and set it up, this made a new image of my new Macbook onto my external device.
When I open time machine it will only open it for this mac and there is no way to choose the time machine backup from my old mac which is extremely frustrating.
Now, I know you can access files without using time machine by openening the HDD and browsing the files, or browse other time machine disks. I used this method to download all my files with no issues at all but what I really need is my mail folder from my old Macbook.
I located the library folder but within there is no 'mail' folder. I used terminal to unhide files but this seemed to have no effect on the external HDD.
If I plug the external HDD back in to the old mac it again tells me no time machine is set up on this product and wants to make a third image.
Please help as these emails are vital!
    Regards
    Nicola Rutherford

Today this happened again: lost all the emails on MobileMe account. This time I am sure there was no interference with checking mail from the office or any other computer other than iPod Touch.
Switched on email. Opening an email it got stuck and after a minute everything in the mobilme inbox disappeared.
I use the iPod Touch to check email so now and then. Up until now no surprises.
Start to feel very uncomfortable that this can happen at random. Fortunately I back up on GTech external harddrive, but nevertheless. Any clue?
(I have posted this message wrongfully under Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, it should have been Mac OS X v10.5.7 Leopard. Do not know how to move this to the right forum.)

  • Time machine email restore won't step back

I am trying to find and thus restore old emails which are missing, but when I go to the appropriate mailbox, then Time Machine, and select an older date, nothing happens.  It own't step back.  I have done this several times in the past and it worked fine. I ran Repair permissions, and oddly nothing was found wrong, and then shut down.  What's wrong?

Did you do a full system restore, after starting up from your Recovery HD and selected Restore From Time Machine Backup?  If not, what did you do?
There is no history in users/username/library/mail as other posters have pointed to.
Have you tried opening Mail in the user account in question, then clicking the TM icon in your Dock?  See the blue box in #15 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Time Machine Email Notifications

Does anyone know of a way, or of a third-party app, to get Time Machine to send email notifications of successful or unsuccessful backups and even better a copy of the backup log.
I realise that for most people this is not a required feature and in the case of Apple philosophy they would think this would over complicate things for their target audience but it would be really hand for support desks who need backup monitoring/reporting.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, there does seem to be some sort of problem in Mountain Lion with the special handling for Mail, at least in some circumstances.   As you've seen, the data is there (you can also see it via the normal Time Machine interface by looking at the Mail folder via the Finder);  the problem seems to be with the special Mail display only.
Unfortunately, of course, you can't tell what any particular message is from the Finder display;  that's why the special handling using Mail was developed.
At first, I thought this was related to converting from MobileMe to iCloud, as it happened to me about the time I did that, while beta testing Mountain Lion.  I reported it in April, and have received no solution yet.

  • Time machine email backups

I've been using time machine since January 2011 and have complete backups of things like photos and documents going back to that date. The problem I noticed is that when looking at my email backups, time machine only shows that I have backups going back about a month and a half!! So where are the rest of them and why don't I have email backups dating back to January 2011? Very concerned...

  • Time Machine Full Recovery From Wireless Backup

I am reporting this as a learning experience for all.
I just had a hard drive fail on my MacBook. Apple Care was golden and now I have a clean install with Leopard.
Here is my situation. MacBook backed up via time machine on a wireless network. Windows on boot camp partition. Dedicated disk (1TB Buffalo) connected to wife's iMac via firewire.
I want to do a full recovery. I start up leopard and it gives me the option to do a full recovery during setup. I have no time machine backup list provided. I continue with setup. When I go to the recover option of time machine I am asked to select a file. This is when I call tech support.
Tech Support says I should have had the backup disk connected directly via firewire for setup to see it. Time machine stores the backup under these conditions as a Sparse bundle. Now that I am past setup I have to do a migration rather than a recovery. I start up the migration assistant and I still cannot access the sparse bundle as it is grayed out. The leap here is you have to mount the sparse bundle, double click, then it shows up as a disk you can migrate from.
Windows Partition, as TS puts it is "on its own".
The confusion for me was that I could not recover exactly as I had backed up.
I hope this helps someone. Cheers!

It seems to be. All music, photos, applications, etc. are present. I have not had time to do a complete review of my migration, I will track this post for a while and report any problems. There were significant OS updates which were required. I thought that they would be included as part of the migrate, not so. Perhaps they are on a true "full recovery" from setup, any one know?
Migration has no option for any part of the OS. It assumes you already have it.
If you recover your entire system from a TM backup (assuming nothing significant was excluded), you get your entire system back exactly the way it was: the OS, Apps, settings, preferences, user data, etc.
You don't load a new OS from the Leopard Install disc -- you only use it for it's copy of Disk Utility and the installer -- everything else comes from your TM backup.

  • Downgrade to Snow Leopard with Time Machine - and then, what?

So I am making Time Machine backups on a regular basis. Almost daily.
The last one when I was running Snow Leopard, dates back from December 25th, 2011.
I have done a lot of reading and googling before making the leap back to that happy Christmas day, which I am about to do now. I have learned that I can easily re-install my iMac using that TM backup.
But - what happens to all the documents I have created and modified after that day? Do I have to select them one by one to restore them? Must be hundreds of them. Or is there an option to put back all the documents on my HD at  the same time?
I realize that I can make another backup today using Carbon Copy Cloner which I can use to do so. Only, I don't have another external HD to make that CCC-backup.
And what happens to the applications I have installed running Lion?
So, perhaps it would be the best to erase my TM external HD, turn it into a bootable CCC HD which contains everything I have currently installed on my iMac , and restart / re-initialize the system using my SL install DVD…
Please give me some advice. I do want to downgrade, but I am scared to lose anything on the way…

Just did the downgrade, but Migration Assistant don't let you rescue any kind of information from the Time Machine backup. It just tells you to upgrade your system. I'm feelling like trying to downgrade my iPhone 3G from iOS 4 to 3. Impossible. Pretty f***** up...
