Time machine erase external drive

Hi,
connecting a formely windows based external drive to my new iMac (trekstor maxi t.u. Kit, supposed to work on both systems according to Trekstor homepage)time machine automatically installed it's back up and anyway, formatted the drive, so I now could not read out the data, neither by iMac nor by Windows!
Is there any help to regain my datas?
Thanks

I'm afraid that you have possibly lost your files but you can take the ext drive to a data recovery centre, they will let you know for sure
Just recently I plugged in an ext drive (Windows stuff on it) to my 24" iMac and formatting was required...a message came up about the formatting however it wasn't really a warning or anything and you could easily miss it if you didn't do a bit of reading first before clicking to back up using Time Machine
Luckily I spotted the "Formatting Required" in the message and then plugged into my PC, transferred all the Windows files to my PC after which I then plugged back into the iMac and let the formatting process go ahead, then Time Machine back up
Trekstor probably meant the ext drive ITSELF could be used on both PC and iMac comps, not the operating systems
Just why you can't read the data is hard to say but either a problem with your ext drive or a glitch with software or both....have you tried again to get it up and running ?

Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  "Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."  What are AFP features and how do I get Time Machine to backup to my current external backup?

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

What is listed under 'Backups' are the 'local snapshots'.  In my case I do not have any.
Run a Time Machine update and the Backups should be reduced.

  • Time Machine Backups external drive developed problem which the disk repair utility cannot fix, so suggested reformat. I can't reformat because the "Resource Busy". How can I reformat this drive?

My Western Digital external hard drive which I use as a Time Machine Backup stopped working. I tried repairing the disk using the Disk Utility program, but got the message that the utility can't repair the disk and to erase and reformat the disk. When I try that, I get the message the operation can't be completed because "Resource Busy", even though Time Machine is turned off. Any suggestions for repairing the drive/disk?
    Thank you.

  • Time machine on external drive will not back up itunes media file on a separate external drive. Have already reformated itunes media drive, dragged itunes media backup file from time machine (old copy) and removed time machine plist and restarted.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
    Any help for this??

  • Can I have two Time Machine backup external drives on one Mac?

I have been using Time Machine for over a year and like it very much. The thought occurred to me that I should buy a new external drive that I can backup to and store at a remote location. I plan on making a backup each week, then taking this new drive to my office. That way, if my house ever burns down, I have a backup at my office too that will be a fairly recent backup.
When I unplugged my older external drive and tried to launch a backup using the new one, my Mac said it couldn't find my Time Machine drive. Won't it let me backup to two different drives? Or does it always need to backup to the same one?
    Thanks!

    polishedstaple wrote:

Yes. All you have to do is tell it you've changed destinations, via +Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk.+ (Use different names for the drives, so you know which one is which.)
Try not to go too long between "swaps," though. After several days, especially if there's been a large volume of changes, Time Machine might do a new, full backup, instead of an incremental one.
However, I've learned over the years (mostly the hard way, of course ), never to trust my backups to a single app or piece of hardware: no app is perfect, and all hardware fails, sooner or later.
Like many here, I keep both full Time Machine backups, plus a "bootable clone" on a separate external HD. I use CarbonCopyCloner, many use the similar SuperDuper. That gives me the best of both types of backups, plus of course a completely separate, independent backup.
CCC is donationware; SD has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling. Either is easily found via Google.
And/or, see Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product.

  • Restore iphoto library from Time machine using external drive

I keep my iPhoto library in an external drive (iomega 1 TB) I use Time Machine (Time Capsule) for my back-up of iphoto.  The external drive is failing.  I have bought an new external drive and wish to restore my iPhoto library to this new drive.  The steps for restoring from Time Machine require me to click on the iphoto library and then enter time machine.  I cannot do this as the folder is now unreadable in the drive and I do not wish to restore it to this old drive in any event.
I have accessed the time machine drive and can see the iphoto back up is there.
    What is my next step?

  • How to recover iTunes library from Time Machine on external drive

    Dear Forumers,
I was not able to solve this problem, hence I decided to open this discussion.
Recently, I clean installed Yosemite so my new Mac is completely empty.
I have my time machine backup on my eternal hard drive and would like to restore only specific things - such as iTunes library.
    How do I do it?
I can locate the iTunes app in the backup file in the external drive but that is just the app - I still don't know how to recover my playlists and songs.
Moreover, I do not have those songs in the Mac - previously they were in a separate organised folder created by me (inside the "music" folder) and iTunes used it.
Does iTunes have a copied library of this all?
Or do I have to copy this folder into Mac and then manually reopen all the songs and sort them into playlists?
    Any advice?
    Thank you in advance.

  • How can i backup iphoto in time machine from external drive

I have recently placed iphoto onto an external drive to save on space.  How can I still ensure that this is backed up on time machine?

  • Kernel Panic when attaching time machine USB external drive

Really hope someone can help me with this.
I've got a late 2011 Macbook Pro, and was running Time Machine on a 500GB GDrive USB external drive. Was working fine when I last attached it on Feb 29. The Time Machine backup was encrypted.
When I tried to use it yesterday, as I have lost all my iTunes data on another drive, I got a Kernel Panic when I entered the password for the drive.
I managed to de-encrypt the drive using Disk Utility, but now I get a Kernel Panic everytime I plug the **** drive in.
I really need this backup data, would appreciate any help people can offer. Am running Lion 7.3, and the same error occurs on a Lion iMac that I have tried the drive on.

  • Restore Time Machine to external drive

I'm running snowleopard and I have 2 400GB striped drives and one failed.  I have the backup for these on my time machine disk however, do not have enough space on the start-up disk to restore.  Can I restore that to another external drive?  If so how?  I would like to have a backup of that data immediately until I can buy a replacement to put into the computer and then I will clone it to the internal drive.
    Thanks
    Betsy

Gotcha. So we're trying to restore only the failed disk. Let's try this.
Plug both drives into your machine, the one with the time machine and an external that has room for everything on the failed drive. When the drive pop up on your desktop, open the Time Machine backup disk in finder. Open the folder backups.backupsdb, and then Betsy's Mac (Or whatever it is titled). Then you should see dates and a folder called latest. Open the folder called latest, and you should see all volumes backed up: Machintosh HD, and then the other two drives.
Completely copy the the failed drive to your external, and then back to the drive once you have it fixed. That should work.
Hopefully this is more helpful than the last.
    Good luck!

You are correct Linc.  I am probably not being clear enough.  The dead drive is disconnected and I am only using the new external drive, the iMac and the Time Machine backup drive which is connected to the iMac via ethernet.
I am trying to what you have suggested and appears all over the internet as the correct method.  Unfortuntely, it is just not working.  I will take snapshots of the screens to illustrate.  (not sure how to take sceenshots in Time Machine.)
While in finder I have the sidebar.  I choose my iMac and choose enter Time Machine (Home Drive is the new external drive):
Just before I enter -- a window opens that says "connecting to back-up volume":
Then another window opens -- on it's own -- that is the Time Machine Back-up and it does not have the sidebar:
As I slide into Time Machine another window opens -- on its own -- that contains the elements of my sidebar:
As show below in another screen grab:
And now I am in Time Machine with that window -- i have even tried to click on the sidebar window which lies in the background just prior to sliding into Time Machine but I still get this window):
No side bar.  But, I can choose any back-up window behind it it -- going back in time -- and get windows that looks like this:
Via the bottom status bar I can manuever to the correct back-up date and time i want and get this window:
The Iomega HDD contains the back-up of iPhoto Library (and other files) thart I wish to restore.  I should be able to open this folder.  Choose the files to restore and voila.  But when I choose the foloder.  Nothing.  It freezes -- except i can still manuever the mouse.  No spinning wheel.  Nothing.  I cannot exit Time Machine etc.  I end up shutting down using the power button.
BTW. Here is the wiondow I get when I click on the Time Machine drive in the sidebar:
I can choose the iPhoto Library and I dragged and dropped to the new drive.  There was an error the first try (after 4 hours...) but the second try worked.  I have duplicated/backed-up the library getting ready to experiment with an new iPhoto upgrade.
    Is this the same library?
But any thoughts on what happened during the Time Machine process is appreciated.

  • Apple TV, Time Machine and External Drives

I have an apple TV, A 1TB time capsule and a 1GB hard drive attached to the time capsule. My itunes library is too big for the apple TV. My itunes application is on my laptop and my library is on the storage drive, backed up by time machine.**
My question - Obviously any content I sync to apple TV is available to the whole family but am I right in thinking that all the other content that can't be synced because of size can only be accessed when I am at home with my laptop?
If so then it would appear that mac have invented a fantastic product but made the weird assumption that our home movies, audio and movie downloads will not exceed the maximum size of the ATV unless we buy a dedicated computer! I am not much better off than I was when I simply streamed music through airport or had my ipod connected to my stereo. Because I cant sync my whole library I have to sync only playlists so there is no cover flow, just a list to scroll through same as I had on my ipod!
It makes me wonder if the design and marketing department at apple have lost the plot and concentrated on media sales rather than customer satisfaction. If you take into account that the itunes movie rentals are more expensive and no more recent than those in Blockbuster (I just rented 5 blue ray for £10.00) then the ATV is looking like a temporary toy that already fails to meet the needs of the average consumer. I love apple products but at the moment I'm thinking I could have just plugged endless storage devices into my playstation and achieved much more.
Someone please tell me I'm wrong.......

    flintonmac wrote:
Thats a rather ragged defence of a poor bit of design.
It's not a defence, it's an explanation. If you don't like the Apple tv model then fair enough but it's not bad design by any stretch of imagination. My point being that Apple tv deliberately moves away from the model you seem to want to follow, you have your right to your opinions but you need to accept this isn't what most people want and why you can now rent 5 disks for £ 10 from Blockbuster.
My main point. If you don't sync your whole itunes library then you have to scroll through a playlist which removes the convenient cover flow interface
Not at all, there is no cover flow and lets hope that if there ever is, it's an option only. Cover flow is very pretty but quite impractical for large libraries.
and leaves you in the same position as you would be scrolling through the content of external drives on any other media player.
Not at all, all the other media players I have reviewed have resulted in a chaotic interface when it comes to searching for media on attached drives.
It would not have been hard for apple to allow itunes to send a playlist that is seen by the apple tv as its entire content.
That's exactly what the Apple tv does. It strikes me that you haven't really taken the time to see how the Apple tv works properly or what it has to offer you.
My secondary point. Apple is behind most other service providers in terms of providing access to new releases and price.
Again that's incorrect, Apple offers similar content to some other online media providers but usually more than most. It's true that in comparison to traditional physical media, it's offerings are somewhat poorer but this is the result of protectionism applied by the movie studio to try to support a flagging physical medium industry, all online suppliers have the same issue with the movie studios.
While I am moaning...... The HDMI connection stays live even in standby so every user has to reach behind the TV when changing from apple to cable tv. Not a reasonable solution so it means that I use the AV outputs instead. If you link that to my second point then yes I can rent DVD's in HDMI but I have to change my cable set up before I do.........
If this is an issue with the Apple tv then it's something that does need resolving, but at this stage you can't say for sure it's not your tv, if it works fine on one port but not on another it sounds more like the tv to me. None of the 5 tv's we have that have an Apple tv connected to them display this behaviour.
Your points are very valid in your case, I'm not dismissing them, just pointing out the model you would seem to prefer is the model that most people are wanting to turn away from, so it isn't bad design, it's just that you don't like it.

  • Time Machine Turns External Drive Read Only

    Folks--
I went away on vacation in December 2010 and shut my mac osx 10.5.8 desktop computer off, and with it my lacie 1T external drive, partitioned into three volumes, one of which served as my Time Machine backup volume. When I returned from vacation in early January 2011, Time Machine said that the volume in question was no longer available. Somehow it had become "read only." When I tried to fix it using Disk Utility I was unable to even verify it. When I tried to copy the files from the volume to another drive so that I could reformat, I received error message 1426. I'm feeling a little stuck. It seems like the only option is to reformat the entire drive and lose all of the back ups (the other two volumes have older backups).
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    nicx wrote:
Is it really corrupted? I can still access all the data on the volume, I just can't copy it or get the volume out of the read-only status.
Yes. If OSX marked it "read-only," it's corrupted.
Time Machine backups are intricately linked together; anything corrupted means the whole set is suspect. You may be able to restore some things, you might even be able to do a full system restore from some backups; but somewhere, something is corrupted. OSX knows that, and won't let you resume backing-up to corrupted backups, or copy them (even if you could copy them, the copy would be corrupted, too).
