Time Machine error -6584 can't run the programme, using new time capsule. Help please!

Bought a new time capsule and it appears to be OK, my Macbook has backed up nicely. Tried to get my imac 27" intel to do the same. Can seee the capsule and can save to the capsule but Time Machine won't run. I just get the error message -6584 .... any ideas anyone?

The problem seems to be common. Time Machine won't start: i.e. "it"... or the "Stars Wars" thing...
The following process eliminated the "error -6584"
Brand new out of the box, 2TB Time Capsule 4th Gen, backed up my iMac 24/4GB/10.7.2 over ethernet with no problems or errors. Time Machine did several incementals over night while I slept. When I returned from work, ready to reimage the OS, I discovered TC hung on an hourly incremental. When I tried to re-establish connection, no dice (error -6584) .
Several attempts to open the volume failed. I could manage all the preferences and configure the Time Capsule. I just couldn't open the back up or start Time Machine (app).
I dropped the %HOSTNAME file from the archive folder in Finder into the Disk Utilities image window to verify and repair, but received "file in use".
Restarting ("reset") the TC oddly resulted in renaming the volume label to "Unamed". I open Airport Utilities and renamed the archive folder to "Data" as before...
Now able to mount (login into) the volume... But it shows "--" in available volume space and no "Oldest" or "Latest" backups are displayed... Not a good sign. Waiting for backup to start..... Looking for backup....
Odd, instead of failing now, it started an incremental. Done!
I am now able to open Time Machine (or that cool Star Wars thingy that takes you off somewhere) and review all the backups starting with the first one I created before I went to bed last night.
The question seems to be what created the problem. I suspect my iMac went to sleep (shut down HDD) in the middle of an incremental. That may have set the "in use" flag on the archive and OS X didn't know how to handle that when I woke the machine up.
I hope this helps, and corrects my problem permanently.

You cannot have time machine backups on your hard drive if you intend to use it in FCPX.

Hard drive issues due to Time Machine backup? Can't source the problem.

Last night my computer began to run extremely slow. All apps simultaneously lagged (spinning wheel of death), but then began working again after about 0.5-1 minute. This whole-system crash repeated about every 10 minutes a total of probably 5-6 times. The last time all apps stopped functioning and (CPU usage of iTunes was 85-95% for some reason (viewed using activity monitor), I am guessing due to its use of multiple hard drives as my music is stored on an external drive) and my computer just shut off after about 3 minutes of completely stalling. Rebooted computer and was left with an EXTREMELY slow system; opening up the quick menu (forgot the name, button on the top row of keyboard) for booting applications took 2-3 minutes. I eventually started disk utility, verified disk. It said I needed to repair disk by restarting my computer while holding down [Command] R message. Made sure i had a backup (at the time of that backup my computer was experiencing the problems above, 11:21pm), so I restarted whilst holding command R. Booted into the OSX utilities, retried the disk repair, received the "Disk Utility cannot repair this drive: back up as many files as you can..." message. Erased/reformatted my internal hard drive, and ran "repair disk" again; disk utility found no problems with the disk. Restored my files to my internal hard drive using OSX utilities (using the full system restore of the 11:21pm backup), and left it running while ran some errands. When I came back to look at my computer, it had attempted startup and crashed with the "kernel error" or whatever where all the text is on the left of the screen. It said something about not being able to find "disk2", which I believe was the disk containing OSX utilities (as veiwed in disk utility while running OSX utilities). Force shutdown, reboot with command R, wiped my internal drive again. Decided to only install a fresh version of OSX in an attempt to scan for viruses (using Sophos Antivirus, running scan as I am typing this), as the slow behavior of my computer had been very strange and began almost instantaneously (seemed like a virus/malware). No threats found so far with Sophos (scanning all my external drives too to source the problem in time machine backups), but I have deduced that there is something wrong with the most current Time machine backup, as it re-established the "problem" (easily fixed once drive is erased using OSX utilities) with my hard drive once I restored it to my internal hard drive. I am wondering (if it is not a virus) if I will need to repeat this whole process with every time machine backup to find where it went wrong, or if i can somehow pinpoint the problem easier. Will all of my Time Machine backups be corrupted now? Why would the Time Machine backup affect the state of the hard drive (does in need to be repaired or not)? Very confused at these random problems. If it is a virus (I will post the results of the Sophos antivirus scan as soon as it is finished), can I remove it from the backup and then restore it with no problems? What do you suggest I do? Will it make a difference to restore the most recent backup (11:21pm) using Migration assistant now that I am running a fresh install of OSX mountain lion? How can I source and eliminate the problem?

Time Machine Error 6584 Mountain Lion

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. I normally wait but Lion was getting slower and I was beginning to have more problems with it. Somehow in the process I lost my Iphoto Library. I easily found it in Time Machine and I was able to start the restore yesterday. Unfortunately it was a large file and would take over 10 hours to complete. I came into the office today to go ahead and get this done but now I am unable to get Time Machine working. I get the 6584 error. I tried the solutions I have seen on the internet but I am unable to "Option Click" on Time Machine. When I do it just tries to start Time Machine and I get the same error. Help!

Just upgraded to Mountain Lion. It had a problem and the Apple store did a wipe and install. I restored all my data and apps by ethernet from Time Capsule. I had to find and reinstall Java. Things appear to work ok except launching Time Machine gets a warning "Unexpected error occurred (error code -6584)." I've not yet recovered an old document so cannot say if it works.

Time Machine Error and Can't Unmount Disk

I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I think Leopard must be optimized for Intel Macs, and I'm guessing my problems have to do with using a G5. Anyway, I have a 250G start up drive and a 500G second hard drive which I've been using for Time Machine back ups. A few days ago I began getting errors that time machine could not complete its back up. No details whatsoever.
I looked at several articles and it appeared that I needed to create a partition on my 500G drive and do something else, I forget what. But when I attempted to do this, I got a message that the "disk could not be unmounted". What does this mean and what do I do now?

Hi! You shouldn't have to partition it but it does need to be in the Mac format which you can check in disk utility. AS for the failure to unmount often when you get this message if you'll watch the disk actually goes ahead and dismounts and you can just attempt to erase again and it will go ahead and erase. Tom

Time Machine Error -1: WD Smartware is the culprit!

If you're having problems where your Time Machine will not connect (and it has before) the problem is most likely WD Smartware. This is Western Digital's bundled software on Western Digital external drives and it's a sneaky install, done often without you knowing it.
(See NOTE below if you want to confirm that your data is still on your backup, even though Time Machine is not working)
***SOLUTION: GET RID OF All WD SOFTWARE TO PROPERLY USE TIME MACHINE AGAIN***
DO THIS:
Applications > DELETE all WD Smartware applications
Go to "/Library/LaunchDaemons" (this is root of your HD, where you should see a Users folder) and DELETE these files:
com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist
com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist
Restart your computer.
Try launching Time Machine again.
(It may take a few minutes to renegotiate with the prior backups. It won't show that it's picking back up in the history (meaning it won't show the last date and time, but you can tell it's working if the back up is smaller than a full backup of the entire hard-drive)
This should work! :-) ... If not, contact Apple Support!
NOTE: If you want to confirm that your data is still on your backup drive (even though Time Machine is not working), do this:
Finder > On left side, under Shared, you should see "Data"
Open "Data". Should see a file named something like "YourComputerName.sparsebundle"
Open this file. (May take a few minutes)
Finder > On left side, "Time Machine Backups" should appear (or mount) under Devices
Select this device on left side.
Should see a folder on right side called Backups.backupdb
Open this Folder. Should see an enclosed Folder named after your computer.
Open this Folder. If your data is still there, you should see a bunch of folders named after each prior backup. These will be named with date and time, which should look something like "2012-06-29-212605" depending on the date and time of your last backup (the last digits represent the time in 24 hour-speak)
If you see this, there is hope. If you don't see this, sadly you've probably got other problems and should contact Apple Support.

This is a Lion bug. compounded probably by the bugs in 7.6 and later firmware of the TC.
Rebooting the TC is disconnecting the users .. Lion is failing to unmount the TC after a backup. Reboot is forcing it to do so.
But if you download and install the non-toy version airport utility for lion.. which still has a disk page.

Install and run that exclusively, on the disk page is a simple icon, disconnect all users.. wonder why they have that icon.. well now you know. So you don't need to reboot the TC. Just press the button (icon) so to speak.

You have an item somewhere on your hard drive named Backups.backupd. Try searching for it. If you don't find it, try getting a copy of EasyFind and look with that.

After Time Machine Restore I Can't Label The Main Drive With Colour

I changed my drive to a bigger drive and used time machine to restore my os and files to the new drive.
A small thing i know, but i used to have my drives labelled with colour using the get info window. After the restore i dont seem to have permission to add a colour to my drive anymore.
This is the only issue ive picked up. Anyone know why this is the case?

It's a good thing. I was going to suggest checking the Get Info window for access writes next, so you did the smart thing.
FYI - You should continue to run Repair Permissions periodically, even if nothing is wrong. I do it every time I get system and security updates, and install major applications. Actually, I do it before and after the updates, although that may be a bit extreme. But I've never had any problems with installing updates either.

My Outlook 2011 shows no messages which started right after I ran SyncMate. I decided to restore my system using Time Machine, but that did not make Outlook show my emails. Outlook indicates that I have several messages, but none appear. Suggestions please.

Apologies for not replying back sooner - I've been away.
Although your suggestion helped me in getting a copy of Lion that I could use, it didn't help with the restore from Time Capsule issue. I had to download the Lion app onto my MacBook & then transfer it across but it wouldn't let me upgrade my OS for some reason, so I ended up wiping the iMac completely and restoring via my Snow Leopard install disk. For some reason, this time, it let me have the option of using Setup Assistant to access the Time Capsule for a complete restore.
Now, over a week later, with various bits of tweaking and reinstalling some apps that didn't seem to come across, I have my system back.

HT3728 My Time Machine tells me it cannot complete the backup to my Time Capsule because the backup disk image sparsebundle is already in use.

The 2GB hard drive on my iMac failed and has just been replaced under warranty.
When I got it back I restored my Time Capsule and started back ups of the iMac and the MacBook Pro.
Now 2 days later it is telling me that Time Machine couldnt complete the back up to my Time Capsule as the backup disc image sparsebundle is already in use. It is saying this for both machines which presumably means a problem within the Time Capsule.
What does this mean and what should I do about it?

I am trying to move previous Time Machine back ups off an external drive to my new Time Capsule. How do I do that?

You probably cannot do it..
The backup is very different from a local drive to a network drive.

You can move the backup from a local to another local disk or network to another network.. but there are issues even doing that.
IMHO.. don't... just start a new backup and keep what you already have saved up.. if you don't need it in 6months time.. or a year.. then you can wipe it.

I'm getting "The connection has timed out" when I try to connect to one specific website. I can connect to the site using Internet Explorer. Help?

As suggested by Firefox, I cleared my history and cache. I also downloaded and ran one of the Firefox recommended malware applications. I also removed Firefox from my firewall and then added it back as suggested by Firefox. I have no problem accessing the site using Internet Explorer.

Thanks jscher2000. Yes, in Safe Mode I was able to go the site. I read the possible ways that Firefox suggests to try to fix the problem, i.e., go through all my extensions to find the problem or reset Firefox to the original factory settings. Where do you suggest I go from here?
