Time machine error message "will not connect"

When trying to back up to Time capsule using Time machine I get this error message "The backup disk is not available." for my iMac. However, I can browse my Time Capsule using Time maching so I'm pretty sure they can connect. My wife gets the same for her Time Machine using a external hard drive with her MacBook Pro. It all started a week ago... Any suggestions?
Cheers

PS
And why can't I ask apple about this???

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
That's a +Network Drive,+ and TIme Machine doesn't work well, if at all, with non-Apple network drives.
See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
But check the WD website, for an update that might help: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=589
If none of that helps, there's a chance that changing some of the names might help. See #C9 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If still no help, copy and post all the messages here, but don't replace the names with asterisks -- we can't tell if there's a problem with them if we can't see them.

  • Time Machine Error Message: "sparsbundle could not be accessed (error-1)

    hi,
I am running snow leopard on my iMac and have a mac mini connected via ethernet running Mac Leopard Server version 10.6.
I backed up my iMac onto my Mac Leopard Server using Time Machine about a year ago and then I turned it off and haven't done it since. I turned it on today and was attempting to back it up, but I keep getting the following Time Machine Error Message: "sparsbundle could not be accessed (error-1) when i try backing it up.
Any thoughts on why and how to fix this? I can access my server via screen share, so i know its accessible and I can get online with it as well, so its connected to the Internet.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Josh

Anything in the log files on either the client or the server?
Usually, when Time Machine is being flaky, the easiest solution is just to delete the backup and start a new one. Since you have a server, you could just move that sparsebundle file elsewhere instead of deleting it. That is, of course, assuming you can still open it. If not, then it doesn't matter because that backup is toast.

    What now?
    Macbook Air.
Was working fine for the past year until now.

See more like this on the right.. this is the most common error reported here since mountain lion came out..
    Or read C12.. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Or just restart the whole network.. in right order from off.. modem.. router / TC.. clients 2min gap.

Seems that you have to update Logic to the latest version (9.0.15) to get it to work in Lion.

I can call my ipad with my iphone alll the time.  That's how I check up on my kids at home when I"m at work. You just set up to your iphone's facetime setting with your phone number and set up your ipad's facetime settings with your apple id (in this case it's your email)

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You have got the "Backups.backupdb" folder in the root level of your hard drive. This is the folder used by Time Machine to save backups to, and the OS X Mavericks installer thought that your hard drive is being used to store Time Machine backups
To fix this, open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
Then, delete "Backups.backupdb" and empty the Trash. Finally, open the Mavericks installer from the Applications folder and follow the steps

    sonjadg,
you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update  to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.

I just bought a time capsule and it will not connect to preexisting home WiFi.  The Airport Utility recognizes one of my neighbors networks but not mine.  I have ATT&T U-verse.  I understand I can use the Airport time capsule as a router but would prefer to use it in my existing network

I have a similar hookup, I have a Airport Extreme & Time Capsule. I would like to connect my Extreme to the Time Capsule "6th gen". I would also like to use the LAN ports on the Extreme. Can this connection be done wirelessly or wired? I'm using a Mac Tower that does't have a wireless card if that's important.
As long as you have two apple routers then it is up to you which way you do it.
You can connect them by ethernet and use it setup as roaming network.. for wireless.. it will simply be bridged on the router side. Ethernet is much the faster solution.
But if you want to use wireless link that is also fine if the range is not too great. Then ethernet to the computer.. so you effectively have a wireless bridge...
    so, Cablemodem----Airport Extreme- - - - - - - -wireless link- - - - - Time Capsule------computer
Where the more solid lines are ethernet.. that is possible setup. And using the TC directly on ethernet to the computer will keep your backup speed good while also giving you hopefully your full internet speed so that works well.

  • Migrating content from an encrypted Time Machine external disk (will not easily work)

I recently purchased an SSHD to upgrade my Mac. I preferred not to completely restore from Time Machine, but rather to install a new copy of Mavericks on the new disk and then migrate my TM content afterwards. At the end of installation, Mavericks proposed the option to migrate data from a TM backup, which I chose.
It turns out that the Migration Assistant did not recognize any disk, perhaps because it was encrypted, nor displayed any way to select the volume and unlock it by entering its password. Despite what Pondini says the Time Machine backups disk was not seen by the Mac: as workaround I had to create a fictitious user, log in, unlock the disk (that was immediately recognized by the system) and then run the Migration Assistant from there (by the way, after 4 hours I finally logged into my migrated account and found out that apps were not imported at all!)
I find all this quite not…applish! I could have preferred to unencrypt the TM disk rather than
Is there anyone facing this same experience? Hope that this, if it's a bug, will be fixed, otherwise I'll have to make a TM backup on a secondary disk (which I don't own so big).

Well a google search would appear that disk utility will show you the disk regardless if it's mounted or unmounted. you're best bet would be to unmount the disk in finder, shut down the computer completely, unplug it from a power source, and then unplug the firewire...
I think this is your safest bet but then again, I'm not that worried about ejecting my disks.
you get no error messages when you right click and eject the disk in in disk utilty? you said you have a my disk, do you mean My Book by western digital? I know that they load software onto the machine for encryption purposes. have you tried ejecting the disk from there? I uninstalled said software so I can't tell you if there is an option for that or not.

  • Time Machine Error Messages-HELP!!

I purchased a Time Machine a few months ago and it worked for a little while. Now I just receive error messages: "Time Machine Error The backup disk image could not be mounted" and "The storage location for Time Machine backups can't be found". I can't figure this out. I have restarted the Time Machine, I tried reconfiguring it several times and still it is not accessing the backups or creating backups. It is only allowing me to connect to the internet. Can I fix this problem?

I have exactly the same problem. I'm running the latest firmware from both Time Capsule as well as Time Machine.
Could you please tell me if your problem was resolved and if yes, how?
    Thanks.

  • Time Machine Error Message.  What to do?

    Hello,
My G5 has 2 built-in drives, each 160Gb. I have reserved one of these drives exclusively for Time Machine. There is no issue regarding the connection of these drives since they are internal.
I started Time Machine 3 weeks ago, and it has been running successfully. With each backup, the available space has been declining. Tonight the available space reached the megabyte range - insufficient space for the next backup. It is my understanding that when new space is required by TM, old backup(s) are AUTOMATICALLY deleted.
Tonight when a backup starts, the window (System Preferences) shows that the backup is preparing. However, as soon as it starts copying to the TM drive, I receive the following error message:
    "TIME MACHINE ERROR
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
No further information is provided for diagnosing the problem. I have no idea about the cause or what to do.
Can anyone identify the problem and a workout? I would appreciate some help. Thank you. Dale

    Hello,
