Time Machine error: not enough space

A little while ago I got an error from my Time Machine backup, stating, "The backup disk needs 349.72 GB for the backup but only 327.67 GB are available. Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files." This was not a new backup, and I couldn't see any reason why Time Machine would deviate from the usual small incremental backups. I finally ended up formatting my Time Capsule and starting over. Things were going fine until today, when I got the same message. Any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?
The backup is for my iMac, running OS 10.10.3, the Time Capsule is 1 GB. I don't have any partitions, and the total backup for my computer should be only around 500 GB according to the Time Machine preferences. I do have an external hard drive connected, which holds videos and photos and is included in the backup.

Thanks for the comment but I don't think I'm having any of those issues. Time Machine will work fine for a while, and then it suddenly decides it needs to back up almost 350 GB of "new" data even though there haven't been any changes that would justify that large a backup. This is what I see in the Time Machine Buddy widget:

  • Restore from time machine error 'not enough space'

I'm trying to restore my HD from Time Machine and in the Select A Destination' window the HD is listed but I cannot select it.  At the bottom there is an error message of "This disk does not have enough space to restore your system".   Let me say the backup came from this same computer.  I thinking I may have to reformat the HD and then restore.   Any helpful advice?

  • Time Machine error "not enough disk space"

I just recently updated to Mavericks and Time Machine won't work.  Sounds like it's a common problem, but I've gone back a month in the forum and haven't found my exact issue yet.  In my case, I get an error message that claims I don't have enough disk space, that's the reason TM won't start. In the past, Time Machine would just delete the oldest back ups and create new back ups when I've filled up my back up hard drive.
My hard drive is plugged in the back USB port, and it's a 500 GB Hitachi.  My Mac is also 500 GB, it says I need 354 GB to back up and I only have 96 available.
    I've tried the following:
Turn TM on and off, disconnect it from Mac
Added entire Mac HD to the Spotlight privacy list, then pull it off the list such that Spotlight would re-index my hard drive.
Turned off the energy saving on hard drives in preferences
I'm almost thinking I need to reformat my back up TM drive and start a fresh TM again.  I have no problem deleting what I have on there, but would hate to do it if it also wouldn't work.
    Any ideas?

  • HT201250 Time machine error not enough disk space OS 10.5.8

Time machine backups are failing, telling me I have 100 times more data than disk space. I do not have 100 TB of data to back up, and have plenty of free space on the designated drive. What gives?

  • Time Machine claims not enough space, but there's plenty

    Hello --
I'm having a problem with my Time Machine backup ever since upgrading to Yosemite. After the initial backup, I get these errors: "The backup disk needs 838.03 GB for the backup but only 712.05 GB are available. Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files."
However, there is plenty of space. The initial backup took up about 898 GB of my 1.61 TB machine. Subsequent incremental backups should only take up a fraction — and I'm confident that I haven't added hundreds of gigabytes of new data to my disk. However, each time Time Machine tries to run its backup, I get the same error.
Time Machine is backing up both my small internal hard drive (128 GB) and the rest of the backup comes from an external drive. It worked fine under Mavericks, but under Yosemite it seems that Time Machine doesn't realize that the hundreds of gigabytes on the external drive has already been backed up before and doesn't all need to be backed up again.
Any thoughts? I had a backup that was several months old earlier; once I started getting this error, I wiped that backup thinking that a fresh backup might sole the error. No such luck.
I'm running Yosemite 10.10.0 on a mid-2011 MacBook Air, backing up to a Sinology NAS. (My wife who is still using Mavericks is continuing to successfully backup to the same drive.)
    Thanks everyone!
    - geoff

I have the exact same problem with almost the same setup: MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012) running Yosemite 10.10, an external harddrive and a Time Capsule 2 TB (4th Generation, Version 7.6.4). I even took the same actions as geoff2 (deleting the complete set of backups from Mavericks and making a new complete backup on Yosemite). On my internal harddrive 270 GB are occupied, on my external harddrive around 980 GB are occupied and the MacBook of my girlfriend is also backed up to the Time Capsule. At the moment around 646 GB are available on the Time Capsule.
Now I get the same error message saying, that 977 GB are needed for a backup but only 650 GB are available. Interestingly backups without the external drive connected will complete without any problems.
The external drive has a "GUID Partition Table". So it seems both of Linc Davis suggestions don't apply to the problem (we both have either GUID Partition Table or Logical Volume Group and the issue appears both on a NAS-Storage and on a Time Capsule).
Looking for additional information I looked into the console and found the following report: "Inheritance scan may be required for '/Volumes/Dolphin', associated with previous UUID: BA36E38E-71F9-39E1-BF72-36AF9D4BB45F". "Dolphin" is the name of the external drive. What does that mean? Is it of any relevance? For more information I will post all the reports concerning the backup below (it's mainly about trying to free more space on the TC by deleting old backups). "Yosemite" is my internal OS X Volume, "Hamster" is the name of the Volume on the TC, "Nifty" is a Nifty mini drive in the SD-Card-Slot.
I already verified the backups using the Option-Click on the menu bar symbol and I deleted and rebuilt the Spotlight index but it changed nothing. We could of course delete the backup volume (NAS or TC) and start a new backup, but I have a feeling, that the issue will appear again afterwards. Any other suggestions?

There shouldn't be any fee involved.  Call the Apple online store for your country (1-800-MY-APPLE in the U.S. and Canada) and request a refund.
If the download is stuck, you can download in iTunes on your computer, then sync it to your iPad once your free up some space.  This explains how to download your previous purchases to your computer: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519.

    Dear,
As suggested, i have checked for the JVM configuration for low heap size but i found the value of MaxPermSize to be 256M. So, i guess this is not causing the "Not Enough Space" issue.
Please let me know where else do I need to check as i completely clueless about this problem.
    Thanks for your inputs.

  • Time Machine Restore "Not enough free space"

    My Problem:
    1) I backed up my iphoto library to a 1TB external HD
    2) Deleted my iphoto library from internal SSD
    3) iMovie cannot locate any of my movie files anymore therefore;
    4) I am required to use time machine to restore my iphoto library
    5) I have an abundance of free space on my internal SSD to do what time machine is built to do
    6) 130 GB free space on internal SSD. iPhoto requires 60 GB to restore
    7) NOT ENOUGH FREE SPACE TO RESTORE??
What i need from YOU (the expert out there):
    1) Either inform me how to relocate lost movie files for iMovie or
    2) Educate me on how to restore large files back to my internal SSD
What I have TRIED and DONE to NO avail:
    1) Emptied the "Trash" (apparently that was supposed to help)
    2) Create 2x the space required for the restore of iPhoto on my internal SSD (apparently sometimes it needs twice the memory, which by the way is bogus)
    3) Used my second backup of iPhoto, with a copy and paste function

    Brilliant.
Now if I could solve my iMovie video relocation problem I would be back in business. Definitly won't be able to always have my iPhoto complete library on my internal SSD.
    Thanks!

  • IFolder Client error: Not enough space on the iFolder server

iFolder client gets the following error:
iFolder synchronization cannot complete because you don't have enough space on the server.
Free space on the server = 464 MB (total space available 3000 MB)
Space needed to complete synchronization = 2536 MB.
Please free up space in your iolder and click OK.
Click Cancel to cancel to sync.
iFolder client log looks like this:
    13.3.2011 23:40:46 Synchronizing with server...
    13.3.2011 23:40:48 Synchronization failed
The volume size is 36 GB and it has free space 20% = 7 GB.
So there is enough space to the iFolder sync.
iFolder host is NetWare 6.5.8 server and iFolder version is 2.1.8
The same iFolder is synced from two (2) PC's, a desktop (XP SP3) and notebook (W7 SP1 32bit). Both have been working for long time.
The problems are seen on notebook using Windows 7. The Windows 7 (32-bit) OS has updated with SP1 on Saturday (May 12th.2011). After the update iFolder worked but on Sunday evening the errors started.
iFolder client (2.1.8) has removed and reinstalled. First the client seemed to work OK, but after the sync of last file, the error reoccured again.
iFolder sync partially works: files and folders created on desktop PC are synced to notebook.
But files created on notebook are not synced to desktop.
Any tips how to repair or troubleshoot?
    Kind Regards, Harri

464 MB is less than 2536 MB so error message is correct.

Is there perhaps a volume or directory quota in place that would affect
    the sync?

Noting your follow-up reply re uninstall of Windows 7 SP1 I'll flag that
the iFolder 2.0 client is not supported on Windows 7 - it would have
been released before Windows 7 and certainly not updated for it (OES
    Linux introduced iFolder 3).

  • Time Machine says not enough room on disk

Time Machine says that I do not have enough room on my backup disk.  It is a 1 TB Drive, with 992 GB available.
I only want to back up my programs and data, which, if a full backup, is 662 GB, but for some reason, I am being told that I have 2.6 TB of data to back up.  I have no idea where all of this other data is coming from, is there any way I can select what I want backed up?  Effectively I want to back up my boot drive, and my data drive, that's it.  I do have two other drives in my tower, and they are full of data, but I do not need to back them up, and they may be what is causing the problem, but I don't know how to remove them from my backup list.
Any help or direction would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

About TM "Backup Drive is Full" Alert
TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.

  • Touchsmart 610 - installing windows 8 on a partition, error, not enough space on system partition?

I created a 150 gb partition to install Windows 8 so I could dual boot Win 7 and Win 8.  When I try to install I get a message that there is not enough free space on my 'system' partition.  The only thing I can think of is that it is referring to the system (reserved) 100mb  partition.  It only has 10 mb of free space.  Obviously the partition I want to install on has plenty of space.  Has anyone had this problem and gotten around it?
UPDATE:  Found the problem with my 100mb reserved partition.  I assigned a drive letter to it through disk management and saw a file 'test.vhd' of 55 mb.  I recognized this as a virtual drive I had created and deleted a few months ago!  Deleted this file and then removed the drive letter assignment, and Windows 8 installed on my partition in about 15 minutes.
    This question was solved.
