Time Machine Error sparse bundle could not be accessed

Issue: Time Machine Error "the backup disk image "/volumes/data/.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
Background: I have an '07 iMac with an external WD 1TB hard drive to store video, pictures and music as well as a 1TB Time Capsule to use for my Time Machine back ups.  Once I converted to Lion, I started getting the "sparsebundle...counld not be accessed" error message.  The Apple support line directed me to take the issue up with my local Apple store (or else they would have charged me $50).  I went to the local Apple store and was directed to erase my sparsebundle and start over.  My iMac apparently values the sparsebundle as it would not let me delete it...it would just hang up.  I finally had to erase the file from the Time Capsule and start over (based upon some recommendations I found within the Apple Support Communities).  I did that two days ago and it looked like I was in the clear.  I have about a day's worth of backups and now just started getting the same error message as I did before.  I am a casual computer user with limited trouble shooting skills.  Does anyone have any ideas, tips or suggestions as to the source of the problem and how to properly trouble shoot the issue?

Dirty of Apple.. this is a bug.. that is caused by your upgrade to Lion.
We see loads of issues. Did you upgrade install? I am not sure that that is some of the issue.
Anyway the solution is to restart the TC.. just pull out the plug and reboot it.
Like windows.. first support question. Did you turn it off and on again??
Read C17
http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You need to use the 5.6 utility so download and install that.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go to the disk page and disconnect all users.. same thing as pulling the plug really.

  • Time Machine Error Message: "sparsbundle could not be accessed (error-1)

    hi,
I am running snow leopard on my iMac and have a mac mini connected via ethernet running Mac Leopard Server version 10.6.
I backed up my iMac onto my Mac Leopard Server using Time Machine about a year ago and then I turned it off and haven't done it since. I turned it on today and was attempting to back it up, but I keep getting the following Time Machine Error Message: "sparsbundle could not be accessed (error-1) when i try backing it up.
Any thoughts on why and how to fix this? I can access my server via screen share, so i know its accessible and I can get online with it as well, so its connected to the Internet.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Josh

not backing up yet, but more progress than before...now its on an infinite loop of "preparing" and "scanning"...just keeps doing that over and over...but never actually backs anything up.
Anything in the log files on either the client or the server?
Usually, when Time Machine is being flaky, the easiest solution is just to delete the backup and start a new one. Since you have a server, you could just move that sparsebundle file elsewhere instead of deleting it. That is, of course, assuming you can still open it. If not, then it doesn't matter because that backup is toast.

  • Time machine is giving me this error;sparse bundle could not be access (error-1)

The time machine is giving me this error; Disk Image"/Volumes/Data/adminstration Mac Book Pro (2).sparse bundle" could not be access (error-1)

Restart the TC.. ie pull out the power.. count to 10.. plug in power.
Still have issues restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. TC.. clients. 2min gap. Any other network clutter.. restart in order it is connected..
See C17 for more info if you still have issues.

C12 is most popular problem.. but C17 is close second.
I would also read C9 as your naming is perhaps a cause of the problem.

  • Time Machine ,,,,,sparse bundle could not be accessed (error -1)

Time Machine on my iMac (2.66 i5) is failing with the message:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.  The backup image "/Volumes/Time Machine/Shaggylane iMac.sparsbundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
This error appears when the backup is started......it spends a bit of time "Looking for backup drive", then displays the message.
The directory "/Volumes/Time Machine" has the following permissions:
drwx------  13 root        wheel    398 24 Aug 13:15 Time Machine
I was able to login as root and go into that directory.  I didn't see any broken links or anything that stood out.
I was also able to go into Time Machine from the desktop and flip through the backup history.  It seemed to be responding normally.
Time Machine has been working fine for 2+ years.  I suspect it got buggered-up when I accidentally rebooted while it was doing a backup October 12th.  Lion was installed in the spring.  On the 12th, I installed a Lion patch bringing it up to 10.7.2.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Doug

I have not found a long-term solution (fix), but in my case the volume where the Time Machine backup should occur usually is mounted on the desktop but not as a shared volume (incidated as a drive with the people holding hands superimposed over the drive icon). If I drag the drive to the trash (unmount it), the next time Time Machine is scheduled to run, it completes successfully.

  • Time Machine error: Disk image could not be mounted

    I had two macs 1 and 2.
1 was stolen. I bought a new one (New 1) and it took the place of mac 2.
Mac 2 was reformated and restored from the TimeCapsule with the backup from the old 1.
The new 1 succeeded in continuing the back-up from 2.
But the mac 2 can't get used to backing up on another sparseimage on the Time Capsule. The result is, that both of the computers now makes back-up to the same sparseimage as if they were two users on the same computer. But the TimeCapsule doesn't accept that they can be using the sparseimage at the same time and claims that the backup is used by another.

I was encountering the same problem. I would navigate to my external drive and I would see the folder for the sparceimage and it would have a circled minus sign icon on the folder and it was not possible to mount it using DiskImageMounter. I would get a window stating the "operation not supported on socket". When I looked at the Time Machine preferences, the disk image was not available so I could confirm that it was chosen as the backup disk. However, when it became the scheduled time for Time Machine to do its scheduled backup according to the information in the Time Machine preferences pane, the disk image mounted and the backup seemed to commence. Similarly, when I went to Time Machine and asked it to "Backup Now", the disk image mounted, and the backup proceeded. However, the disk image then dismounted and again it was no longer available to Time Machine. When I ran Time Machine, I could not choose the disk image and restore files from it because it was no longer mounted.

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro backup to Time Machine (on my 1TB Time Capsule) when I'm running Lion OSX 10.7.5.? What does it mean when this error pops up: MacBook Pro.sparse bundle could not be assessed (error - 1).???? Please help me fix this!

Apparently I am not the only person having this problem as I have seen many threads about it. If ANYONE OUT THERE CAN HELP ME, I WOULD SINCERELY APPRECIATE IT.
I try and run my backup as I always have, but it HAS NEVER COMPLETED SINCE I UPGRADED TO LION. As many mentions, I updated from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 hoping that would fix my issue and it didn't help at all. I also unistalled WD SmartWare to no avail. It's really starting to annoy me since I have as much money invested in my MacBook Pro and Time Capsule as I do in my car....
I have more than enough space on the Time Capsule, but Time Machine is still failing and coming up with an error message: MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be assessed (error - 1).
    Someone, anyone, please help!

Time Machine is working fine. Time Capsule starts out down loading but part way it quits
and the message shows, "volume/time capsule/macintosh.sparsebundle" could not be
assessed (error-1) .How do I correct this?

I purchased a new iMac and Time Capsule and also have a power book, All on Lion latest 10.7.4.  iMac  works fine with Time Capsule but after the first back up of the power Book I also get the spares bundle could not be accessed error 1.  I have tried all the suggestions (some were in error regarding the disk utility) And the disc image cannot be repaired just erased and then a new disk created.  I have had to backup the powerbook using a 1TB portable hard drive.  Come On  Apple lets fix these bugs!

If you are using someone else's WiFi they may have restrictions in place.
      (cofee shop, etc..)
Have you tried connecting using at least more than one particular WiFi network ?
You might want to try googling for a bandwidth test site
      verify you have reasonable throughput..
1 megabit up and 1 megabit down..
(bandwidthplace.com is what I typically use..)

Can anyone help me clear this annoying message up?  Thanks for advance....

The unplugging was of power, if you were unplugging ethernet .. that will not do anything.
    The issue is explained here.
    C17 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If a restart of the TC is not adequate you maybe in the 2% that has other issues.. please try a full network restart in correct order.. with everything off.. modem.. then TC.. then clients.. with 2min gap to allow modem and TC to finish boot process.

  • Time Machine Error: The backup was not performed because an error occurred

    G'day (from Queensland, Australia)
Not for the first time Time Machine has broken down - originally in September 08 (I just can't recall how I fixed it!!).
Now it has failed after 14 months of faultless performance.
There seems to be little help available, but searching for solutions finds plenty of problems.
I get the message "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying to the backup disk.
The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair you backup disk."
(I have a Time Capsule as my backup disk)
    Disk Utility runs and finds-
Verifying volume “Backup of xxxxxx’s iMac”
    2010-01-25 12:16:09 +1000: Starting verification tool:
2010-01-25 12:49:21 +1000: The volume Backup of xxxxxx’s iMac appears to be OK.
    2010-01-25 12:49:21 +1000: Repair tool completed:
So I search and find "Fix for broken Time Machine backups under Snow Leopard"
(http://www.andrewgrant.org/2009/09/22/fix-for-broken-time-machine-backups-under- snow-leopard.html) - downgrading to 7.4.1 of the Airport Extreme / Time Capsule firmware.
But still have the same Time Machine error!
    On to http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=103919&highlight=TimeMachineError
    and try-
"... suggesting would be something like renaming the existing TimeMachine file on your backup disk - e.g. add a date to the end of it.
And then go onto Time Machine preferences and set it up as if it were the first time you used it. (Renaming the file on the backup disk should make Time Machine think that you are starting fresh.)"
So, using Finder, I opened my Time Capsule and renamed "xxxxxx’s iMac_00224135e6fb.sparsebundle" as "091222xxxxxx’s iMac_00224135e6fb.sparsebundle091222"
And finally, this worked - I have my backups to 22 December and a complete backup as at today and hopefully for at least another 14 months!

  • TS1337 Time machine backup disk image can not be accessed

    Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me as I'm constantly getting the following message:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk image "/Volumes/My name Time Capsu/My name's iMac.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)
Does anyone know what this means as I can't find anything regarding this message in troubleshooting?  My time machine has been running perfectly for well over a year until a couple of days ago.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I had this same problem. Unplugged the power for a minute and plugged back in after reading this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4984048
