Time Machine error: The backup disk image "/Volumes/----/----MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use and resource unavailable?

I have a MacBook Pro 13" 2010 model running Mountain Lion. I have always been able to use Time Machine with my Time Capsule. Just today I have been receiving the same error message whenever I would back up my computer:
I removed my name before "MacBook Pro". It takes a long time "Looking for backup disk..." first. The disk I put with the time capsule is called Huge Backup, and in Huge Backup there is my sparsebundle file called "----- MacBook Pro." When I open Finder, open my time capsule, and then open my sparse folder, it should mount a drive where I can see my computer's backups. That doesn't work. Then I get this message:
I once again removed my name before "MacBook Pro" but I can open my sister's sparsebundle who is running Mountain Lion on the same network and her backups work fine. I have researched this topic and have tried to repair the disk in Disk Utility, remount all the drives, remove the drive and restart the backups, and even restart my computer and the Time Capsule. Nothing worked. It just was working yesterday, but now I get this in the settings along with a caution symbol in my menubar:
Is there anything I could do to fix this? Reconnecting it in AirPort Utility (5 or 6) didn't work. Also, for some reason, the error renamed Huge Backup to Huge Backup-1 as you can see above and below in the messages. I downloaded the Time Machine Buddy widget and this is the error report I got. I replaced my names or private info with [-----]. By the way, the network is called NDR Network, and the Time Capsule is alled NDR Time Capsule. Here's the error I keep getting:

  • HT3275 TIME MACHINE ERROR: The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Sean McGuire's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 1).

I can select a disk (Time Capsule) and initiate the backup.  It only "waits to back up" then "making backup disk available" and remains frozen there.  I tried to update the software a while back and was unsuccessful, I think that may be the issue.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  This is the error message I receive.

  • Time Machine backups to OS X Server 10.8 fail with "The backup disk image "Volumes/Backup6/macname.sparsebundle" is already in use" Error

Connecting about 100 Macs running Mavericks and about half of them are getting "The backup disk image "Volumes/Backup6/macname.sparsebundle" is already in use" error.

This was happening with our 10.8 environment and when we migrated to Mavericks, I rebuilt the OS X MacMini Server. Seems worse now with 10.9
Most discussions advise in restarting TimeCapsule or network device.  However restarting OS X Server everyday is not a solution.  Any advice in resolving this issue is appreciated.
    Thanks!  Corbin

I also had to restart the server and client after applying the "fix" I described above. Basically, no user should have multiple, simultaneous file sharing sessions on the server. But even clearing the user sessions does not resolve the problem beyond the next Time Machine backup, so I also tried disabling and enabling file sharing, but the problem also returns after doing this. Only restarting both the client and server after clearing the sessions has worked for me when I have this problem. The problem may return much later, but this work aroudn definitely works as a temporary solution.
Next time I encounter this problem I will try restarting just the server or just the client, because it is unlikely that the problem exists due to something on both systems. Server 3.x is definitely not as stable as it should be, but for my use, it is getting the job done.

  • The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/iMac.sparsebundle" is already in use

I've been using Time Machine (on Time Capsule) for about a week; with successful backups until today - when I got the following message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/WinMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.
    "WinMac" is my iMac's name.
    Any advice?

The proposed "solution" (to unplug/restart the router/disconnect users from the disk) isn't really a solution, though. Rebooting the network every time Time Machine breaks itself is hardly a solution. The whole system is supposed to be worry free; a network reboot is hardly an example of worry free.
The problem is silly and rampant on my home network that servers a collection of laptops; at any given time, someone seems to be seeing this error. If we wait long enough, the problem seems to go away, but in the meantime, people are unable to back up their machines.
My best guess as the cause of this problem is when a laptop is put to sleep in the middle of a time machine backup. Since time machine effectively runs as a background process, this occurrence should not be surprising and should have been handled gracefully by Apple. Except it (apparently) isn't. When the machine is slept during the backup I again guess that lock file is left in the sparse bundle. My attempts to find said lock file have been unfruitful.
I'd sure like to see Apple address this issue in some way.

    1. Restart your MBP and try the back up again. If this fails try step #2 below
    2. Unplug your Time Capsule from the AC giving it thirty seconds or so to discharge, plug it back in and retry the back up again once you're back online.

    Reboot the Time Capsule..
Or reboot the whole network. This is just really poor networking on the part of Mountain Lion.
It has simply lost connection to the TC drive.

  • "The backup disk image 'Volumes...sparsebundle' is already in use" error message

Since upgrading to Lion, I seem to be able to back up my MacBook over Wi-fi to an external hard drive attached to my Airport Extreme just fine.  However, if Time Machine is in the middle of a backup and I interrupt it by closing my MacBook hence putting it to sleep, next time my MacBook attempts a backup I get the message "This backup disk image "/Volumes....Macbook.sparsebundle" is already in use.  I've tried disconnecting all users from the hard drive in the Airport Utility, and then unplugging the hard drive and plugging it back in, and then it seems to backup fine, until I interrupt another backup, then the problem starts all over again.
I never had this problem before upgrading to Lion.  Suggestions?

NateCook, I'm experiencing the exact same issue.  I'd previously been enjoying how seamless Time Machine worked, wirelessly and automatically, to backup my MacBook Pro to a 2 TB drive attached to my Airport Extreme.  I also liked that I had the flexibility to plug that drive directly to my Mac, via FW800 or USB 2.0, if I needed to.  It would always work too, regardless of whether or not I interrupted a backup in progress.  Now, with Lion, I'm constantly getting the same  "This backup disk image "/Volumes....Macintosh.sparsebundle is already in use" error.  I fix it by restarting the Airport Extreme but that's a pain in the butt to have to do all the time.
Can you verify whether or not the recent OS X 1.0.7.1 update helps fix this in any way?  Or is the situation the same for you?
I'm loathe to "give in" and buy a Time Capsule to replace this setup, but I will if I have to... I want everything to work like it did before and I'm not willing to downgrade fom Lion back to Snow Leopard over this.  I was hoping Apple would fix it properly, but since this isn't a "supported configuration" (even though we know full well it works just fine) I was afraid Apple wouldn't focus on this as a priority.
I'm also a bit fearful that the same issue will occur with a Time Capsule.. hmm... my hunch is I'll be finding out soon enough.

  • HT3275 Time Capsule error message: "Time machine error-The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/Zeb's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be accessed (error -1)".

Please help! Got myself a timecapsule a few months back. I just use it to back up my mac, and also have a wireless printer connected. I have a Macbook Pro (Mac OS X 10.7.3). When I first got my Time Capsule it backed up flawlessly, but in the last few months has started showing the message above. So now it wont back up at all.
Have done probably 2 system updates during this time, and even a firmware update a few days ago for the timecapsule. This recent firmware update seem to fix it for a day, but now the problem is back!!! Even Mac support wasnt able to help last time I called.

  • My time machine will not back up.  It says the backup disk image "/Volume/Data/Eunice.sparsebundle" is already in use

What does that mean and how do I correct it so it will back up?

Restart your MacBook and your Time Capsule (or disconnect your Time Machine external drive). Finally, you will be able to make backups of your files again.
If you have got a Time Capsule, Apple released a firmware update that fixes this issue. Open AirPort Utility (in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps. See > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html

  • The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Macintosh.sparsebundle" is already in use.

Now what, how do you fix this???

Of the various suggestions by pondini which did you try?
You might need to delete the old backup and start over.. this can be complicated by the fact you are using the TC for multiple computers.
My suggestion would be to at least copy off the old backup if there is anything you are likely to need or even do a full archive of the TC.. just in case deleting something causes issues.. delete and start again.
Do the first backup always by ethernet.. there are too many issues with long backups over wireless.

  • The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/MacPro.sparsebundle" is already in use. Has anybody had this problem?

    Can anyone assist.

    1. Open the Sharing preference pane and check that the computer name hasn't changed without your knowledge. For example, if the name was "X's iMac," it might now be "X's iMac (2)". In that case, restore the original name. You may have to click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane to unlock the settings. Test. If there's no improvement, or if the name had not been changed, continue.
    2. If you're backing up to a Time Capsule, or an AirDisk attached to a 2013 or later model AirPort Extreme base station, restart it in either of the following ways:
☞ Disconnect and reconnect the power adapter.
☞ Select the device in the AirPort Utility application and then select
              Base Station ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
If AirPort Utility notifies you of a firmware update, install it.
