Time Machine error : Waiting for index to be ready (100)

Hello,
I'm having issues with Time Machine, the backup starts, an amount of data is backup and complete (ex 80Mb of 80Mb backuped up), then Time Machine goes back in indexing and get stuck in "Waiting for index to be ready (100)".
Here's what the console output for backupd looks like:

This backup-up has been working for days in the same conditions.
I've tried everything in #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting but nothing changed. How to get more details on what's happening.
Thanks!

Hello,
Hi, and welcome to the forums.

What are you backing-up to? That message indicates it may not be fully compatible with Time Machine.
If you've done everything in #D2, and it's a NAS, check with the maker. They may have updates or other troubleshooting info. Or it may be a hardware problem.

  • Time Machine hang- Waiting for Index to become available (100)

Hi- I'm trying to create a new Time Machine backup to a new external HD (FW800). I've formatted the drive as Mac OS Extended and told TM to use this as the backup drive. I should note that I've done TM backups in the past with a different drive which was a USB2.0 drive, but just got this FW800 and thought it would be much faster to use.
Anyway, now I'm getting the dreaded 'Waiting for Index to become available (100)' message from the TM buddy widget. This keeps repeating every few seconds. I let it run overnight and about 14 hours later, TM backed up 6G from a 150G total. As I watched the backup run, it's copying over about 1M every few minutes. How can this be? I've read through some of the forum entries and I tried placing the external drive in the Spotlight exclusion, and I also uninstalled any traces of Norton that I had installed. Nothing is making this backup go any faster.
So why in the past, has the first backup run fairly quickly, and now this is running like it will take several days to complete?
Please- any help will be greatly appreciated!! thanks.

As far as the communication issue, the external drive mounts just fine, and I can access it in the finder, so I don't believe physical connection is the culprit here.
Not necessarily. A marginal connection may work, but with lots of retries, resulting in things being quite slow. It's fairly rare, but can happen.
I just don't understand why just months ago, the first TM backup started right away and now this is taking forever- Is this a change that was released in an update from Apple in how TM works?
No. In fact, they're supposed to be somewhat faster on Snow Leopard.
How can I delete every trace of previous TM backups and completely start from scratch?
You can erase the drive. If you're going to do that anyway, you might as well reformat it, with the GUID *Partition Map Scheme.* APM should work fine, but if you ever want to use it as a boot drive, GUID is preferred for an Intel Mac.
There's obviously something that's causing this indexing thing to take so long that's never happened in the past.
Try the reformat. (You'll probably have to exclude it from Spotlight again.)
Is it a multi-interface drive? If so, try connecting via USB temporarily.
If that doesn't help, try just copying a large file or folder and see how fast it is. If that's slow, too, you know it isn't Time Machine but something else associated with your F/W card, port, cable, or drive.

  • Stuck on calculating changes - Waiting for index to be ready

I've got a Time Machine which had my disk properly backed up (~500 Gigs). Then, I used Entourage Time Machine to save my email database to a set of local XML files (tens of thousands of new files). Since then, it's stuck on Calculating Changes; I tried stopping it, removing the .plist file, stopping/restarting the service, etc. I restarted it again and now it's once again on Calculating Changes for 12 hours now. Time Machine Buddy says "Waiting for index to be ready". Could it possibly really be doing what it needs to do or is it stuck somehow and is there anything else I can do??
    thanks in advance,
    Mike

did that - repaired the disk, no problems found.
Uh, you need to check your internal, too, if you didn't. It's probably ok, but it's best to be sure. Then Restart your Mac.

Waiting for index to be ready (100)
A few of those may not be a problem, especially after a failed backup. The backups have to be indexed for TM to work right.
why isn't the index ready - could it have anything to do with Spotlight (which is also going like mad, but at least now gives a time estimate) - is that the index it's talking about??
Perhaps. Both Spotlight and Time Machine use the mds process to index.

Ok, so I disabled Spotlight, deleted all the .Spotlight files on all volumes, and restarted Time Machine having excluded the Entourage database and 56 Gigs worth of .xml files of individual messages.

The deep traversal completed. It found about 20 GB to back up (plus 20% for workspace -- the "padding" in the message).
Error: Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0
That's another problem writing the index to the TM drive.
Try a +*Repair Disk+* on it again, and make sure all connections are snug and secure, and try the backup again.
If this continues, it's beginning to look like a problem with the disk or connections. Try different ports, cables, and combinations of the two -- cables do deteriorate, and a plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact in another one.

  • "Waiting for index to be ready (905 0)"

The behavior of TM (and also Time Capsule) seems to have deteriorated significantly since I did the latest TC firmware upgrade. I realize this is the TM forum and that is the basis of this question, but the revised TC is much more difficult to be seen by the TM process since the upgrade and thus results in many failed or unfinished TM backups.
TM has failed in the last three attempts and seems to have fallen into a loop. The log of the atempt before the current one shows the following:

When you say "disk problems", do you mean hardware problems, firmware problems or software problems?
On directly-attached disks, we see this when the disk spins down, but won't spin back up fast enough or properly; or with a USB disk that gets its power from the Mac, but not quite enough sometimes; or port or cable problems; or one that's beginning to fail. It's very hard to tell, of course, which.
I'm not very familiar with TCs, but a disk is a disk!

    So my question is :

Answer: You stare at the table. So... you saw a table... => saw it into two halves. Two halves placed together make a whole.... => climb through the hole and run for it...

  • Time Machine Error - The backup is too large for the backup disk

I have been using Lion (currently 10.7.1) on my MacBook Pro (13" - early 2011) since it was released.  I haven't had any serious problems with it.
All of a sudden, I am getting an error in Time Machine.  When it tries to run a backup, the error "This backup is too large for the backup disk.  The backup requires 7.51 GB but only 630.1 GB are available."  What gives?  That's plenty of room.  I have installed Logic Studio and a few plug-ins, so the 7.51 GB is probably right.  The free space is correct as well.  I can't understand what the problem is.
The backup disk is an external USB 2.0 drive with no other Time Machine backups on it or any other files.  The folder "Backups.backupdb" is the only thing on the root of the disk.
I am reluctant to reset the Time Machine and lose all of the backups, but I will if anyone recommends it.

    Hi Linc,
It is not working at the moment, as I have restored the original Lion image again; it has all my work and apps on it.
Many thanks for the info on the log, though.  It tells a strange story.  Here's the log from the last backup that worked to the first one that failed: --

I don't understand.  For starters, I think it's a little wasteful that 3.5 GB has been used to back up 601 KB.  That's the difference in free space on the backup volume between the two backups.  That can't be normal, surely.
The only error is that mds[32] error, and from what I've read on forums, that seems to appear on backups that work perfectly.
Too weird.  It looks like I'll have to reinstall Lion and all my applications again to get Time Machine working, or find another backup solution.

What are you backing-up to? If you can see the +sparse bundle+ your backups are in via the Finder, use the instructions in #A5 for repairing the backups on a Time Capsule. If you can't see it, you can't repair them with DIsk Utility (or most 3rd-party disk repair apps). Check with the maker of the NAS for help.
Further, i thought it would be something with the message "Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD"
That's normal after a failed/cancelled backup, and will be repeated each time until one completes successfully. See #A6 in Troubleshooting for details.
Besides, my spotlight is now indexing my harddisk and seems to get stuck on "calculating time for indexing"
This is because i excluded my harddisk from spotlight, restarted my mac and then included my harddisk again for spotlight. So it needed to reindex it, but i'm not sure that it will work, because it allready toke the whole day for it and is still saying the same thing..
That sounds like a problem with a file or the directory structure on your internal HD. Did you verify your internal HD, per #3 in the green box? If so, and if it says it's ok, exclude your internal HD from Spotlight indexing until you get your backups working; then you can figure out what's wrong with Spotlight.

  • Time Machine Error This backup is too large for the backup disk

Hi, I have a 1TB Time Capsule which backs up my Mac. I was having some issues with my mac so I decided to perform an erase and install and then use Migration Assistant to transfer everything back to my Mac.
After I reinstalled Snow Leopard and restored my Mac using Migration Assistant, Time Machine says that the backup has failed. It says " Time Machine Error This backup is too large for the backup disk. The Backup requires 663 GB but only 255 GB are available.
What do I do? Is my only option to erase my Time Capsule and have it back everything up from scratch?

Hi, thanks for the help. I erased everything off of the Time Capsule and it's backing up my Mac from scratch. It's almost finished backing up my whole mac. It's now at 641.86gb of 646.54gb but it's now backing up very slowly. It's backing up .1 every few minutes. Is this normal?

  • Time Machine ERROR: Cannot complete FIRST back up

    Hello all.
This is my sis's Mac mini, there was apparently a file or system corruption somewhere that it was not able to boot up, so send in for rescue and the tech was able to rescue all the users' data (sis & dad's)
So Mac mini came home, I reformat the hard disk, ran Disk Utility check and everything OK, and install Leopard 10.5 and iLife 08, and updated them all. Newly-installed apps like Messenger and Skype etc, Time Machine was running OK till now.
Then I started to move my sis's data (user) into the new folders - data of Mail, iTunes, iPhoto, Safari, etc. And TM starts to back up also, and here's where the problem begins:
Time Machine fails to complete back up and give this message:
    _Time Machine Error_
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume. (OK button)
Now this is quite obvious one or more files from the old user folder must be corrupted or "simply bad" that creating this problem. I am suspecting it may be the same problem that was preventing me from previously backing up using SuperDuper while the mini was still in Tiger.
Is there a log file somewhere I can examine to find out which file to delete and not back up? Because the only other way is the start the mac afresh, but I am sure my sis wants her data back.
    Thanks and cheers

I seem to be experiencing the exact same issue.
    1. I wiped my internal and external HDs and formatted them as MacOS X Extended (Journaled), as per instructions on Support Article: TS1550, with the correct partition schemes for a PowerPC processor.
    2. I re-installed MacOS X Leopard from DVD onto the internal HD, created a new admin account, ran Software Update to add all the patches. Re-installed all third party software.
    3. I re-created my user account using files restored from a DVD backup.
    4. Computer works well, just the same as it always did, except Time Machine cannot complete the first backup.
I have added the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget and got the following report log:
    Starting standard backup

    Backup failed with error: 11
The external HD is an Iomega MiniMax 1TB Firewire/USB Hub HDD.
The computer is an iMac G5 1.8GHz (no iSight) with 1GB RAM.
I'm guessing that there is something weird with the Address Book app that is stopping the backup. The app itself launches and runs fine, and also syncs with MobileMe fine.
    Any ideas?

  • Time Machine Error "Unable to complete backup"

I have not backed up my hard drive for about 30 days. When I plug my external hard drive in, Time Machine "prepares backup" for a while, then gives me the following message:
    *Time Machine Error*
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.
I tried unplugging and re-plugging, rebooting my computer, trashing the ".inprogress" backup file and restarting. It did not help. While it time machine is preparing the backup, my computer runs crazy slow, with the rainbow pinwheel spinning for about 5-10 seconds just about every time I click the mouse, in any program.
Per someone's suggestion, I put "sudo grep backupd /var/log/system.log" into terminal, and this is what came up:
"No pre-backup thinning needed: 4.98 GB requested (including padding), 70.16 GB available
Waiting for index to be ready (906 > 0)
Unable to rebuild path cache for source item. Partial source path:

Aborting backup because indexing a file failed.
    Stopping backup."
This time, it was apparently iChat, but in each of the three times I've tried to backup and gotten this error message, a different file has been the culprit for the indexing error.
    Any suggestions?

  • Time Machine Errors

    Hi Guys,
I don't have a great deal of experience with Time Machine or in fact Apple products in general. However one of my clients who's Window machines i support has an issue with their Mac at home, so trying to help them out.
The issue is Time Machine just won't back up. Below is a copy of the error log which shows a couple of backups. The errors seam to vary each time the backup is run, and none of the common troubleshooting steps I've found appear to fix things.
When the backup kicks off it seams to run for varing amounts of time - anywhere from a couple of minutes through to about 20 minutes before it fails with the ever so helpful "an error occured" message.
From the research i've done it appears that this "error -50" indicates an issue with a set file/directory. However even when i exclude these directories, it still keeps finding more. I'm concerned there's a bigger issue than just a few corrupt files - it almost looks like i'll have to exclude half the bloody disk before it will work.
There's also other error messages, such as this "error-36", "error-8062" and a few others as you can see. As mentioned before i've tried a few of the common solutions i've found from searching online, including excluding the error files, removing the time machine config file and there was something about removing and repairing the time machine program itself from memory.
Any suggestions as to what else i can try would be muchly appreciated.

  • Time Machine Error - please help!

My dad has been having trouble with his Time Machine backups. I'm trying to trouble shoot, but can't seem to solve the issue. Whenever we run a backup we get the message: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume" It happens fairly quick after we run a TM backup. Here's what we've done:
    1. Repaired permissions on the internal drive (several times)
    2. Started a brand new TM set-up and back up.
    3. Erased and reformatted the external TM drive
    4. Tried an entirely different external drive as the TM drive
    5. Trashed the/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file and restarted
    6. Downloaded the Time Machine Buddy widget to see if that reveals anything. Here's the error message:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/BACKUP/Backups.backupdb

Backup content size: 122.8 GB excluded items size: 160 KB for volume 500GB

    NOT SURE WHAT TO DO?
    Please help......!!

    Hi Pondini -
thanks for the reply. Your troubleshooting User Tips was what I was referring to all along. I've seemed to have resolve the issue, however, by means of a far simpler solution. I noticed just recently that although the external TM hard drive seemed to have no apparent issues when verified and repaired with Disk Utility, it did hang up and produce some Error messages when simply trying to copy large files manually over with the Finder (not using TM). This caused me to think that maybe it was not TM, but rather something wrong with the data being copied (corrupt files) or the actual drive enclosure. It wasn't the actual hard drive inside, as I had earlier swapped the original drive in the enclosure with a drive that I knew was OK and the problem still occurred. I then noticed that the drive enclosure was connected to the computer via a Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 adapter cable (the enclosure has only FW800 port and the older imac has only FW400 ports - my dad had purchased that specialty cable). When I had earlier swapped drives to check the actual drive, I kept the same cable connection. I now tried reconnecting the drive with a simple USB cable - and wallah! - all my Finder copying worked and Time Machine copying seems to be going fine. SO it seems that the actual FW cable connection was causing issues???? TM is still chugging away at the moment (first copy - large amount of data), but seems to be doing fine. Is there anyway I could have gotten a clue that the problem was something so simple as a bad cable. Is FW more buggy than USB. Maybe those that adapter cables are buggy. I've always preferred FW as I thought it was the faster more reliable method of external HD connection - but maybe USB is a better choice. Obviously here it is. Thanks for the help.

  • Time machine errors out repeatedly

    Hi all,
I have a user who is running an iMac with OS X 10.6.6 (I can get you the specs of the Mac if necessary, I don't have it off hand though). She has an external USB disk set up for Time Machine. A couple weeks ago, Time Machine started erroring out, saying that there was an error copying files to the drive. I ran Disk Utility volume and permissions repairs on both the internal HDD and the Time Machine disk, which seemed to fix the issue. But it's back now. Before I reformat either of the drives, does anyone have any other suggestions? I also plan to update that machine (along with all the others in that group) to 10.6.8 in preparation for a move to Lion in the coming months, but I don't know if OS updates would fix this issue or not.
    Thanks!

These mean that TM isn't sure that what's on these volumes is what it expects. This is usually caused by an abnormal shutdown, but can also happen after certain hardware repairs, a full restore, or going several days without a successful backup. If you see this often, without a good reason, you need to investigate the cause. Among other things, it can cause corruption on your drive(s).
If "Home Folder" is an external drive, the message could mean it was disconnected without being ejected.
Waiting for index to be ready (-903 < 0)</div>
Clue: this often indicates some sort of problem with (or communicating with) your TM drive.
Exclude it from any anti-virus scanning.
Also exclude it, at least temporarily, from Spotlight (via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy).
Try de-selecting the +Put the hard drive(s) to sleep ...+ option in System Preferences > Energy Saver. Most drives don't respond to this, but some do, so it's worth a try.
What kind of disk (FireWire or USB) is your TM drive? If USB, how is it connected (directly or via a USB hub)? Does it have it's own power supply, or does it get power from your Mac?
    How old is it?
How is it formatted? It should have the GUID partition map scheme for an Intel Mac, or the +Apple Partition Map+ for a PPC Mac; and the format must be +Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
