Time Machine Error when upgrading from old iMac to new iMac

Hi. I recently purchased the new 27" iMac and just completed migrating all data from an old PPC iMac. When I went to activate Time Machine and begin backing up on an existing 1TB Time Capsule, I received the following Time Machine error: "The backup disk image "xxxx" iMacG5 sparsebundle" is already in use."
Does this mean I need to go into Time Capsule first and delete the old iMac's sparsebundle before activating Time Machine on the new iMac? If so, is it safe to just drag the sparsebundle file to the trash?
Thanks!

No, you shouldn't have to do that, but you may want to if the TC's disk isn't well over twice the size of the data you're backing-up.
Most likely, all you have to do is eject the sparse bundle via the Finder.
A new feature in Snow Leopard will allow you to continue backing-up to the same sparse bundle. See #B5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If so, is it safe to just drag the sparsebundle file to the trash?
Yes, but if there's nothing else on the Time Capsule, this will be much faster:
Use the +*Airport Utility+* app, in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Select +*Base Station > Manual Set-Up+* from the Menubar, then Disks in the tool Bar, then Erase.

  • Time Machine Error when attempting  make a backup!!!

Hello! I have a TC of 2 terabytes, dual network. Sometimes when I want to make a backup copy get an error "Time Machine Error: Unable to access the disk network backup because there was a problem with your user name or password for network". This usually happens several times a day, especially when the back of repose or iMac is the first time after being turned off.
If I get into the time capsule hard disk (I connect) through the finder, and try to make the backup this works well.

I get a similar error. I recently added a login password for the computer the backup disk is connected to on the network. I always get authentication errors now. I added the login, I thought, to keychain but still fails.

    Hi Katie,
this error can occur with a DIAPI version mis-match. Again note 1247315 should help you in this regard, as there are steps there to follow.
If the note doesn't help, you could also set the logging level to 6 which would provide more information:
    a. Locate the following key in the registry:
       My computer\HKey_Current_User\software\SAP\SAPManage\SAP Business   One\AddOn
    b. Double click on logging level and enter value 6
    c. Start XLR
Please send the log in SAP Business One Log folder from
    Start->Run->%type%, you'll find log called SAPAddOn_01.log

  • Time Machine backup after upgrading from 10.6

    Hi all,
I'm planning to upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.7 on a MacBook from 2007, and I have a question about my Time Machine set-up. I have this backing up on an external HD, and I am wondering if, when I've upgraded to 10.7, the Time Machine software will access the same set-up I had in 10.6.8? Will it just pick up from where 10.6.8 left off or will I have to start again?
    Thanks,
    David

Sadly, after a few successful backups, the same old folder message came roaring back.

  • Time Machine Error - After Upgrade To New Hard Drive

I just upgraded from my previous 500 GB hard drive to a new 500 GB hard drive in my late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro. I have an external 500 GB hard drive that I use for my Time Machine Backups also. I used CCC to clone my original hard drive to the new internal one and everything went just fine.
I also deleted all my Time Machine backups from the external so I could just create a new one after the upgrade and cleared all the trash bins too. But now when I try and create the Time Machine backup, it gives an error that 592 GB is needed to create the initial backup, even though it is only from a 500 GB drive (of which only 440 GB) is being used. I wouldn't think this would be a possible error. Can anyone offer some help, or did I just shoot myself in the foot? Thanks.

Agreeing with Kappy, TM needs 2-3 times the size of the data it's backing-up. See #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
The reason this backup is failing is, TM adds 20% to the estimated size of the backup when requesting space on the backup disk, for temporary workspace and in case the estimate is low. So your 440 GB will require, temporarily, 528 GB.
Short term, you can wrangle a backup by excluding something large, at least 90 GB, (so TM will only request, say, 410 GB + 82 GB for the first backup). Then remove the exclusion and run another, and it should fit.
Longer term, you really do need a larger drive.

  • HT5096 Need to move Time Machine Backups.backupdb folder from old to new USB disk! Help!

I have followed the suggestions at : Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive - Apple Support
However, these fail - If I format GUID, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), I get an error that case sensitivity must be enabled.
I have unchecked the box "Ignore ownership on this volume" as suggested, so that is not the issue.
This error DOES go away if I (ignoring the article's suggestion" format the disk as GUID, Mac OS Extended (case-sensitive, Journaled).
Then, I can initiate the copy. It will begin copying my 2.5+ Million files (1.66T) but it will begin to fail near the end (28 hrs later) with errors like "__DS_Store already exists" and "Invalid Instruction (100)" and I can't stop or complete the copy. I must unplug the USB cable, as an interrupt or eject will fail as an operation is in progress.
I would appreciate, more than anything, some command line invocation that will accomplish my task. I have tried:
"sudo cp -rP /Volumes/Source/Backups.backupdb /Volumes/Target/" both as a user, and also after a sudo su - as root. All fail, citing permission errors.
There's something special about the way the folder security "goes deeper" than unix permissions, and I can't seem to find a way to copy the stinking folder! Please help! I am looking at the tmutil command but don't see an appropriate verb action for moving a time machine directory.
Any help would be appreciated! I don't really want to "dd" the entire volume!
    Thanks!
    Joe

Update. I used a free control panel ("secrets") to make invisible files appear and was able to find the trash folder on the external drive. I was able to move the backup folder while holding the command key and have had two successful hourly backups. The only problem that remains now is the trash file for the external drive.
In regards to erasing it, that is not really a viable option right now because I am in the process of switching to this new 1TB drive and it has some other folders on it that I may need access to in the next few days. I installed my 500 GB (that I previously used for TM backups) into my intel iMac (5,1).
Before doing that I cloned everything from the 500 to the 1TB using carbon copy cloner. Now I'm just going back and cleaning things up. Which is why I need the ability now to not have things immediately deleted.

  • Error when upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks

Has this happened to anyone and what did you do to resolve it?  Error: "install failed - The OS X upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired.  After your computer restarts, back up your data, erase your disk, and try installing again."

    OK,
I did the following (I did not purchase DiskWarrior or any other 3rd Party software)
Backed up to an Time Machine Drive
Reset the EPROM (zapped it or whatever they kids these days are calling it)
Booted off a Mavericks USB stick.
Ran Repair Disk & Repair Permissions
    Installed Mavericks
Worked fine, took a while but up and running.
Not sure what the HD damage error was but it's working away on my old work horse (17" Late 2007 MacBook Pro).

  • My first TIME MACHINE backup (on a week old iMac)

Hi...I am a "NEW" Mac user/owner, and "LOOOOOVE IT". I purchased a SEAGATE GoFlex external hard drive (with FIREWIRE), to use for my TIME MACHINE backups, which was "VERY" easy to use (atleast I think). My question(s) is....
1.) Can anyone tell me, about how long the backup should have taken on a virtually "NEW" machine???
2.) It only showed my machines backup, as around 30GB....could this be possible, with all of the applications presently on my machine (FINAL CUT, APERTURE, MS OFFICE, iLIFE 2011, ADOBE CS5 MASTERS)???
3.) Does Time Machine ALSO backup your applications SERIAL NUMBERS (for restoring purposes)???
Again....this is a pretty new machine, and I purposely did'nt do much on the machine until I go the external drive, so that I could have a backup as close as possible to my machines OUT OF THE BOX state.
THANKS in advance, for any help, that anyone, can offer

    FRESHADDICT235 wrote:
Oh no.....I have all my Apple software, and as for the Adobe (and any violation)....Seller clearly stated, this was not a resell of the software, but rather that it was being given FREE OF CHARGE, with the machine
I'm not questioning your integrity, but technically, it doesn't matter. Apple sells hardware but (like everybody else) licenses software (mostly as an anti-piracy measure). The people you bought the Mac from don't have the right to give software away without the original discs that come with a new Mac (and if it's really new and unused, and all on the up-and-up, why wouldn't they include them?) From the license for OSX:
    "*1. General.*
The software (including Boot ROM code), documentation and any fonts accompanying this License whether on disk, in read only memory, on any other media or in any other form (collectively the “Apple Software”) are licensed, not sold, to you by Apple Computer, Inc . . ."
    "*3. Transfer.*
You may not rent, lease, lend, redistribute or sublicense the Apple Software. You may, however, make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software (in its original form as provided by Apple) to another party, provided that: (a) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, *+original media+*, printed materials and this License; (b) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (c) the party receiving the Apple Software reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License." (emphasis added.)
See the full text at [http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/MacOSX.htm].
The licenses for most paid apps have similar provisions.
The system was never used (other than, the installation of apps, and to assure the machine had no defects), and all components (of the machine....Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor/HD) were still sealed in its factory packaging
Also irrelevant without the original discs that come with every Mac (and many paid apps).
    |
But, the "Software Police" are not about to come seize (or erase) your Mac.
What's done is done; the main point is, you need the discs to be able to do some things, including those mentioned in my previous post.
Fortunately, the OSX discs aren't particularly expensive; if your Mac came with Snow Leopard, AppleCare will send a replacement set for a nominal fee. If it didn't, just buy a retail Snow Leopard disc from an Apple Store or the online Apple Store, for $29.
If you're not sure what it shipped with, AppleCare can tell you, or plug your serial number in to this site: [http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php]. It will give you all sorts of specs, including when it was built and the *Original OS* it shipped with.
You'll have to decide what you want to do about your other paid apps.

  • Time Machine Issue when going from WiFi Network to Ethernet cable

I have my WD network drive attached to my router so I can do Time Machine backups wirelessly. I updated my ancient Mac to Snow Leopard the other day for software reasons, and when I went to backup via Time Machine it said I had 4.6GB to backup. Ok. Don't understand why, but assume it has to do with the OS update. I thought it would quicker to do it through the Ethernet cable, but when I unplugged it from the router and into the Mac Time Machine said it couldn't locate it. that seemed very, very odd. I put it back into the router, and it re-appeared. The bummer is, after two days it's less than half way through the backup. I'm just going to keep it going and hope for the best, but if anybody has any thoughts on this Im all ears.

I decided to change the external drive setup to be a wireless drive over our home network, plugged into my Airport Extreme
Unfortunately, Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
Some users seem to be able to make this work anyway, some have some success and some have no success. At best, it is not a reliable method to protect your data.
Time Machine stores backups differently depending on whether the drive is attached directly to your Mac compared to a drive that works over a network.
That's why Time Machine will make a complete new backup of your Mac when the drive is located at the AirPort Extreme. It may well be that there is not enough space on the drive to allow this.
    Options...
    1) keep the drive attached to your Mac. This is supported and works well.
    2) Erase the drive or add a new drive and start over with a new complete backup on the drive at the AirPort Extreme
If you go for #2, I would suggest that you also develop a secondary backup plan in case things do not work out.
I've experimented 3-4 times with Time Machine backups at the AirPort Extreme and in each case.....they work fine for a few weeks or so. Then I get messages that the backups have become corrupted and I have to "repair disk". This works a few times until I cannot repair the disk and must erase the drive and start over again.
Your resullts, may of course be different.

There are more detailed logs for the various components. The one of interesting is the one for the engine or possibly the one for full-text.
These logs are extremely verbose, and the errors are rarely crystal clear, but at least give them a try. If you have problems, find a place to upload them (Dropbox, Skrydrive etc), so that we can look.
The closest at hand is that "group" that cannot be found is an AD group.

  • Aperture 3 Issues when transferring from old Mac to new Mac

I just bought a new iMac 21.5 yesterday. I transferred all my apps and files from the old 17 inch from my Time Machine Backup.
I am running Ap 3.0.3 - RAW 3.0.2 - all software updates I can find are installed.
    Have reinstalled 3.0.3 Aperture update
MOst things seem to have worked fine except Aperture.
Some images in some projects either don't display at all, some just have the white box, some are just black, some are full of odd noise (as if the raw version wasnt supported)...
All displayed perfectly before the move - the files are on my drive.
    All are in JPG format.
    Help please!

I had this same problem but now I think it is as "solved" as it can be. I tried rebuilding multiple times, and I even created a new library and imported my old one into it. After lengthy discussions with Apple support, it seems the problem is a conflict between Snow Leopard 10.6.3, Aperture 3, and the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card. The good news is that Apple is aware of the problem and is working on it, the bad news is that they haven't yet fixed it.
I followed the Apple tech's recommendation and it seemed to mostly fix the problem. He had me roll back from 10.6.3 to 10.6.2. You'll need to boot from your Snow Leopard install disc and re-install SL (no, this will not do anything to your files). Then, go to the Apple website and download the 10.6.2 combo update and install. (i.e., do not allow the computer to do an automatic software upgrade to 10.6.3 like it wants to).
What I get now is my Aperture 3 working much faster and with none of the strange artifacts I had before. The only exception is when I'm viewing a photo in full screen mode - for some shots I'm still getting the weirdness. However, this is still a huge improvement over what I had before - I can now actually use Aperture again
    Good luck!

  • Upgrading from old Mac to new- how to sync iPhone with new Mac?

    Hi all,
My dad is upgrading from an old iBook to a nice new iMac. He has spent quite a few days tweaking his new iMac and importing old files and folders. The one thing we haven't yet done, though, is iTunes. He has an iBook G3 that he syncs his iPhone with, and he wants to be able to "move" his whole iTunes setup to the new iMac so that it picks up right where the iBook left off, without needing to reset the iPhone.
One thing to keep in mind is that the iBook had a tiny hard drive and thus the music files are actually on an external hard drive. I was wondering how to go about this feat. I read that using Migration Assistant deletes everything off the new Mac, so that's not an option at this point. Thanks for the help!

If you had use Migration Assistant to start with it would have been easier.

Incase of upgrade there are two types of upgrade,
    1. Unicode error upgrade.
    2. Non-unicode upgrade.
What is the difference between SAP UNICODE and NON-UNICODE UPGRADE?
UNICODE: From Release 6.10, ABAP supports multi-byte coding for characters in Unicode.  Prior to Release 6.10, ABAP used only character sets that were based on single-byte codes u2013 such as ASCII and EBCDIC u2013 or double-byte codes, such as SJIS and BIG5.
NON-UNICODE: This non-unicode error removal is just to replace any obsolete commands or function modules, tables such as, WS_UPLOAD, UPLOAD, etcu2026
