Time machine estimate to take 200,000  days

I have a WD 1TB usb 2 external drive which I have recenlty reformatted to use as time machine. I have a 2011 imac 21.5"with mountain lion 10.8.2 running.
First start of time machine is estimating 200,000 days to back up! I have seen on the internet to run sudo tmdiagnose and close dropbox, but not making any difference. The external drive is formatted for max os journalled. I can transfer files to external very quickly still. Its just time machine. Any ideas on what is wrong?

Try visiting the Great Pondoni's site - http://www.pondini.org/TM/D2.html - for 'slow or hung backups'.
If I were you, I would just erase the external drive, again, and setup TM anew... but read what Pondoni has to say first.
Good luck,
Clinton

When selecting my home folder on the iMac and using "Get Info" to see how much space has been used it shows around the 256g mark, but the space used up on my external hard drive is right up to 327g.
Is this normal after the first back up?
    Hi sijam11,
    That appears about right...
It is recommended that the Time Machine Drive be at least Twice the size of the Drive it is Backing Up...

  • Time Machine  - 283gb backup take 60 days?

After about 2 years of not backing up my desktop (iMac 21.5 inch, late 2009, 4GB, running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5) - I decided to run a back up so bought a WD My Passport for Mac, 1TB ... so I select the My Passport in Time Machine Preference, hit "start backup", and it tells me that it will take 60 days to complete the backup. Can this be right?!
Its telling me there are 1,5000,516 items and 283 GB to back up (and its now changed from 60 days to 19 days, for some reason)  - but surely this is wrong?
I know that I am a plonker for not backing it up before, but it has been running pretty much as a media / entertainment computer for the kids, and now I want to clean it up and use it properly again, but thought I should back it up before I do so.
Should it really be taking this long!?
    Thanks for any help.
    Matt

If your external drive has FireWire conenctivity, try that instead of USB. Even the origianl FireWire 400 is functionally faster than USB2.
I had a drive with both connections and decided to try USB2. TM said the initial backup, which was much smaller than what you are trying to do, would take 20+ hours. I stopped everything, reconnected with FW800 and the backup occurred in just a little over an hour.
Because of the "burst" nature of USB transfers as opposed to the steady-state FW transfers, you may find it worthwhile to get a FW drive to replace your current on if it lacks FW connectivity.
After the experience I had (suffered) with USB backups, now I only buy drives with FireWire. I use this model with FW800 exclusively now:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Yes, they are more expensive but mine have been fast, transparent in opperation, and 100% trouble-free.
Another thought: does your current external drive have an external power supply? Drives for desktop use have an independent power supply. The smaller, cheaper "portable" drives typically must draw all their power from the USB cable that is trying to transfer data as well. This "power struggel" is not a good thing with which to live.
Another tip: Most "name-brand, on sale" drives come formatted for Windows. You can use Disk Utility to reformat any external drive. If the drive is ONLY going to be backing up your Mac, reformat it to Mac Extended (Journaled) and it may be faster and certainly less trouble-prone.

  • Time Machine backups slowing down after 25 days

I am experiencing a peculiar kind of behaviour from Time Machine under
Mountain Lion (10.8.2). In the multiple threads on Time Machine issues,
I could not find this exact problem described so I am wondering if
anyone else has seen the same thing or even has a solution.
Like for many others, the basic symptom is that Time Machine becomes
extremely slow. In my case this always happens about 25 days after the
last reboot. I am using a Mid 2010 27-inch IMAC and a Mid 2010 Mac Pro,
both connected to a Time Capsule via ethernet. Both are showing the
    same behaviour.
Originally I was letting Time Machine do its regular hourly backups,
this has now been changed to twice a day using TimeMachineEditor. The
change has made no difference, backups are still getting slow after
25 days. This is accompanied by kernel_task gradually ramping up
its CPU usage, from below a percent to several percent.
Here are the backupd entries from a "normal" backup:
This takes 3-4 min, which I find tolerable - although I
am always surprised by the rather large number of files that
are backed up even if the machine has remained idle:

I have now rebooted the machine, and things are back to normal.
In about 25 days, I fully expect that things will start to grind to
a halt again. On the MacPro, which has now been running for 16
days, things should be fine for another 9-10 days.

These are the messages from the first slow backup. This one was only marginally slower than a normal backup, but a sure sign that things were going awry nonetheless:

  • Time Machine will not back up next day.!!!

I have been having huge problems with Time Machine backups.
I have a G-TECH, G-DRIVE external HD. 500GB. I got it to replace a LaCie d2 Quadra which started malfunctioning.
I have formatted it using disc utility ( GUID partitioning and erasing etc. Mac OS Extended (journaled). Made 2 partitions, erased them, then back to one, erased that etc. I have done a repair on the disc and it says there is nothing wrong with the disc. So I have basically got Time Machine up and running. It behaves fine, backing up every hour. I can put the iMac to sleep when needed during the day, and on waking it up Time Machine still does what it is supposed to do. THEN, if I put it to sleep when I go to bed (11pm), when I wake it up in the morning......The first backup it tries to do, fails. Then the G-DRIVE will not unmount ( it says it is still in use, try quitting applications and try again. There are no applications running). When I eventually get it to unmount by diconnecting the drive and going through the reformatting process all over again, and creating another complete backup, which takes about three hours or so. Same thing happens, it behaves normally until I wake it up the next morning and the first backup fails again. I have reindexed spotlight.( at least I think I did it correctly) I followed some instructions found on another forum).. When I look in console...All Messages....it says
    21/01/2008 04:26:33 kernel disk1s2: I/O error.

    and so on.
I don't undestand why it is possible to put it all to sleep during the day for an hour or so then it still works fine...But not on waking it up the following day ???
Any help would be gratefully received as I am slowly going mad here.
    Thank you.

I had a problem where it would not backup any more. Some of the diagnostics that they had me do were:
    1. Repair Disk on the TM drive
    2. Try backing up by clicking/holding the TM Icon and choose Backup Now
    If failed:
    3. Reboot Leopard
    4. Try step 2 again
    If Failed:
    5. Disk Utility repair permissions
    6. Try step 2 again
    If Failed:
    7. Log out and login as administrator
    8. Launch Console from the Utilities Folder
    9. In the System Log Search for "Time Machine"
    10. Use that to help figure out problems and call Apple Care

  • Time Machine backup taking too long (91 days)

I'm doing the initial TM backup to a partitioned EHD... TM has been running for 3 hours and it has made almost no progress.  It even has the estimated time as 91 days (!!!) to complete the backup.  Is this normal?  The very first time I did TM (on another drive) I remember it took a while but surely not 91 days.  Am I doing something wrong?  Or do I just need to wait it out and let this take its sweet time?

    Hello Jossydtaylor
Check out the article below to see if you match any of the criteria for Times Machine running slow. There are also some other link by the related articles that may provide more assistance as well.

  • Time Machine Backs Up 30-39G every day ??? Using too much Space on the TC

I installed the TC about 2 weeks ago. The first backup went as plan and took all night. But the problem (I think) is that incremental backups take place during the day but every day at the end of the day the TM does a 30 to 39G backup and is using up all the space on the TC. I am sure I am not adding 30 something G every day. Can someone tell me how to setup the TM to not use all the space. I got the TC 500G 2 weeks ago and is down to 219G of free space. I think that is not right.
    Please help
    Thanks

That should do it. Time Machine will backup an active VM each hour if there are changes (i.e. VM is running). That amounts to 2GB+ per hour depending on the size of your VM.
To recovery that space, you need to delete the file (and all versions) from the backup. Open Finder and go to your VM folder. Click on the Time Machine icon on the Dock. Click on that file and click the Gears button. You will be given the option of +Delete All Backups of -----+. All instances of this file will be delete from TM.
To backup your VM, occasionally drag and drop the VM folder to a folder on your backup drive. TM will not touch this.
For Fusion user, go to settings and set up a shared folder outside of the VM. Fusion will then access and save to this folder. Corruption of the VM will not affect these documents. As well, TM will back up this folder as long as you have not excluded it.
    Good luck!

  • Time Machine makes several huge backups a day

    Hi,
I backup my Macbook Pro wirelessly with Time Machine to my Time Capsule.
This has been working great for about a year now. However since a week or so it keeps making these huge backups several times a day.
And by huge I mean 50GB+. I have tried D4 on the troubleshooting page but it did not work.
Any help would be greatly apreciated!
    Specs:
    - Macbook Pro 15" 2,53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    - Running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    - Time Capsule 802.11n

    inkbiegel wrote:
@Pondini: Well once I completed the steps and Time Machine was fully configured again, it went right back to the 59GB backup it kept doing before.
Are we taking about the same #D4 (in Time Machine - Troubleshooting)?
It has a number of common causes of extra-large backups, and links to #A2, which has a couple of apps that will show you just what's getting backed-up, so you can take corrective action.

  • Time machine open preferences takes long time

I use Time Machine manually to backup my digital audio workstation.  I select Open Time Machine Preferences from the Menu Bar, then Back Up Now so I can watch the progress.  Most of the time, the first step above is instantaneous, but every once in a while, it takes over a minute for the preference window to appear.  What is going on, and how can I fix this?

  • I can see Time Machine backups for only last 10 days.

I lost majority of my Documents content.
To my surprise Time Machine has partial backup of that folder for only last 10 days.
Can I somehow access previous backups (that are not visible)?
    thx

When you Enter Time Machine, do the older backups appear in the timeline on the right at all?
If they do, but the little "tick marks" are faded-out and you can't select them, see the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15A.
If the backups don't appear at all, Time Machine probably ran out of space on the backup disk, and had to delete old backups to make room for new ones.  If so, your backup drive is probably too small.  See #1 in the above link.

  • Time Machine back up takes ages.

Hi. I still got the problem that my time machine backup take ages to complete.
I installed a widged called time machine buddy, someone told me to do and now that's what it shows me.
Any idea why it looks like it does the backup twice in a row and for what reason it takes about half an hour to copy less then 1GB.
I allready deleted the HD I use for the backup and got it all new but it did not solve the problem.
    Cheers.

Very good question, as I've had the same issue for over 2 months since installing a new hard drive. Pondini very kindly, patiently and astutely helped me get a hanging 2 hour back up down to a respectable 15 minutes, but that is still too long (when nothing has changed between back ups, in particular). You articulate the question and pose the dilemma far better than I ever expressed. The seeming "dual backup" seems to be the culprit. Maybe Pondidni can give us some guidance based on your post.

  • Time Machine is "Stopping back-up" for days, what do I do?

    Hello,
I have a Mac OS X Version 10.6.8, 4gb Mac book pro, and I'm trying to make the first back-up for days. I have a Wi-fi Router D-Link DIR 615 in my living room and I wanted to use the time capsule to expand the signal so it could reach my bed-room. But first I've been trying to make the back up without success.
I have a Ethernet cabe conected between my computer and the time capsule, and I have a usb cabe conecting the time capsule and the printer. Since I wanted the back-up to be done wirelessly, I didn't connect the modem cabe to the time machine, because it is already connected to the Router.
The problem right now with Time Machine is because it is stuck "stopping back-up" for days. I've turned time machine OFF, and it is still stuck, and I've turned Time Capsule OFF, and rebooted it, but it is still stuck "stopping back up."
I saw in onother conversation talking about SYSLOGED, and how I'm supposed to "open terminal" and write some stuff there:

Is this link saying the right answer to my problem? And how do I "Open Terminal"?
    Tks a lot!

  • How to make Time Machine only back up once per day?

I really really don't need time machine to back up EVERY HOUR. It's overkill for me and with the level of computing I am forcing my computer to do most of the day its VERY irritating. Is there anyway to change the settings so it only backs up once every night?

Yeah, we tried using TimeMachineEditor on a friend's laptop. There will be 2 laptops backing up, and we wanted them both to backup overnight at different times when there would be no interruptions (for user or computer). It seemed to work OK (have to check w/ them), but how do you verify when backups were actually done?
I have a couple related question to this, though, that may also be helpful for folks:
    - I'm guessing Time Machine cannot do a backup when the computer is asleep, correct? If a Time Machine backup starts while the computer is 'awake', will it keep the computer from sleeping so it can finish?
    - If I set a schedule in the Energy Saver preferences to 'Wake Up' the computer at midnight (before scheduled backup), and 'Sleep' later on (say 4am), does this override the other preferences set for sleep in Energy Saver? (ie - if it's set to sleep after 30min., will the computer wake up at midnight only to go back to sleep 30min. later, or will it stay 'awake' until 4am?)
    - Do you need to uncheck 'Put the hard drive to sleep when possible'?

  • HT3275 Trying to do a first backup in Time machine and it says 'About 34 days' but compter keeps turning off after 15mins, Why? Mac pro 17: mid 2011

Backup to external USB 2TB hard disk. Total backup is about 290GB mostly Photos and software (Adobe, Aperture, very few documents and no games.
Disk was tested by reformatin and copying 50GB of photos that took 25 mins. Reformated and set as Time machine disk and its still gong after 12 hours and saying its got 34 days to go. I can't stay awake that long!
Coputer shuts dow after 15 mins with no input. HOW CAN I COMPLETE A BACKUP??/

There is nothing you can do to TM.
But frankly I would give it up. There is something wrong so the chances of this being a usable backup is small.
I am slightly unclear.. you have stated network data.. but I thought this is a USB disk plugged directly into the computer?? Is it something else?
Please indicate the exact setup of the backup disk.
Please show me how it is formatted and is it GUID partitioned?
I have found USB disks can be poor under Mountain Lion.. but work fine in Snow Leopard.. I don't know the reason.. But I think you can stop the backup now..
You stated you did all the steps I indicated.. did that include the verification of the source and destination drive??
Did you load the widget and what is the log showing?
What about trying it differently.. if you want a backup .. do a disk image with superduper.. just so you have a backup..
Then I would try a network backup with the USB disk plugged in and shared to the network from the mini.
You can then do a TM backup to network drive.

  • Time Machine - deleted files disappeared in one day

I may be misunderstanding TM, so maybe someone can clarify, or tell me where I'm using TM wrong.  I'm trying to use TM to keep a copy of files in case of accidental delete or HD failure.
    Here's what I'm doing:
I'm backing up from an external hard drive (call it "original") to another ("backup").
Original has my iTunes library + other things.
I did my first TM backup (original to backup) on the 15th Jan and it's been running since.
To check I'm understanding how it all works, and I know how to restore, I created a "test" folder with a "test file" in it on my original drive and ran TM, all fine.
Then, today, I deleted the test file (not the folder) on the original drive, purged the bin.  Backed up with TM again.
Then I went in to the TM to find the deleted test file and restore it.  But TM won't let me go back in time past the time I deleted it.
Seems strange, I thought the point was exactly that - I could go back to a previous time and restore mistakes, deletes etc?
Or am I misunderstanding what TM is supposed to do?  What's the purpose of it, if it only lets me restore things that are still there?  Is it just to be able to look at earlier versions/ iterations of documents (e.g. a word doc), but not restore screw-ups like deleting the whole document/ file itself if you didn't mean to?
As I say, this is all today's delete, so it can't be that the test doc was deleted from TM for space reason etc.

If you delete a file from your hard drive, TM will eventually delete it from the backup set, when it needs the space. So, unless the backup drive is full, it likely should not have deleted that copy this soon.
Time Machine is not an archival backup solution. It is a snapshot of your current HD so that you can recover from physical loss (ie hard drive crash).
