Time machine et NAS

Bonjour,
Pierre-Antoine

Bonjour,
je suis également intéressé par la réponse. Mon Time Machine sur mon Stora ne fonctionne plus depuis cet aprem car j'ai mis à jour mon Mac vers Lion...
Merci par avance pour une réponse.

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.
    1) Has one of the recent updates either on the AE (firmware) or OSX disabled this function?
No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
    2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.

  • Lion: don't work  time machine with NAS Buffalo or Thecus (AFP error)

backup with Time machine, does not recognize the disk, used with the previous version. The AFP system error that is not compliant, with both NAS.

    Alex

If your NAS/TimeMachine manufacturer doesn't provide an update, you could probably revert to the old ways:
    http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-wo rkaround/
This has solved AFP issues for some but I haven't been able to verify it for TM.

  • Cannot backup my imac with Time Machine in NAS

I use NAS from Buffalo to be my backup solution.  Now I have two mac in my office and first one which mac book pro can backup normally.   I've just purchase new imac and set Time machine to backup at the same place with the old one.  But it hang everytime when I start backup and have to push the power button to restart.  I don't know what's wrong with this.

You will probably need to contact Buffalo Technology Technical Support on the web, because their NAS units can be tricky to backup Two Macs with.  Othere users here have had this problem too. It is not really an Apple configuration problem.
    Hope this helps

  • Time Machine on NAS, sparse image bundles, etc

I have a specific question about using Time Machine with a NAS drive. I have a NAS setup, and I just installed a 2nd drive there specifically for backups. I have 2 macs, a MBP & an iMac. I followed instructions somewhere for creating a sparsebundle disk image on the NAS drive for each machine to get time machine to work over the network, and got it to work. Since the drive is 1TB, I made 2 images at 450GB each, even though the 2 machines only currently need about 90GB & 150GB.
Now, based on advice elsewhere, I set up Superduper to back up to the same drive. This uses a similar process of creating a sparse image on that drive. Note that I say sparse image, not sparsebundle - I tried using the existing sparsebundles already created, but superduper didn't seem to want to do that, and in fact although sparsebundle is a choice in their menu, only sparse image would work. So I went ahead and did this but only with my MBP. It indeed created a separate sparse image, and it takes up the full amount of space necessary to back up the entire drive (90GB).
What I'm wondering is if I'm running the risk of quickly running out of room on my NAS drive, since I think TM will fairly quickly eat up as much space as you give it (450GB X 2 = 900 GB), and the superduper backup is taking up the full amount of hard drive space needed (90GB) to make a full backup (based on what I had read, I thought that somehow using superduper onto the same drive as your TM backups would mean superduper would 'piggy back' on TM's backed up files and only add the components needed to create a startup disk, and therefore not take up much space.) I was still hoping to also back up the iMac (120GB) with Superduper onto the same drive, but don't want to do that yet until I have some peace of mind about this question...
Thanks for any insight you may have!

you should know that TM backups to 3rd party NASes are not officially supported. you used a hack to make it work. but you use it on your won risk and with no guarantees.

no, that won't happen. TM is very economical in how it stores backups. on every backup it only backs up afresh new and changed files. everything else is *hard linked* to existing backup copies. that's why incremental TM backups are usually quite small and fast.
, and the superduper backup is taking up the full amount of hard drive space needed (90GB) to make a full backup (based on what I had read, I thought that somehow using superduper onto the same drive as your TM backups would mean superduper would 'piggy back' on TM's backed up files and only add the components needed to create a startup disk, and therefore not take up much space.)
NO. nothing like this is remotely true. superduper and TM backups are fully independent and don't interact at all. use separate sparse bundles for TM and superduper backups.

  • Time Machine and NAS: Cannot create backup image

I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem when setting up Time Machine with a NAS. I'm using a Thecus N4100 Pro mounted via AFP. I've enabled Time Machine on unsupported disks so that I can select one of my NAS shares as the backup destination. So far so good. Time Machine attempts to create a backup and ultimately fails because it cannot create the backup disk image. Any idea what's going on?
I just set up a Time Capsule for my parents and it worked very well. I've thought about replacing my AirPort Extreme with a TC if I cannot get Time Machine working with my NAS. However, I'd rather use the NAS for obvious reasons (like, I already own it!).
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or will this not work?
    Thanks!
    -Rob

A little searching of the forums answered my questions on setting up Time Machine to work with my NAS. However, I still have one question I hope someone can answer.
The instructions I found describe creating a sparsebundle and copying it to the NAS before Time Machine will work. To create the bundle, one must use the Ethernet ID of the computer. So, what if one is using two network interfaces (ie: WiFi and wired Ethernet)? I prefer wired Ethernet, but use WiFi as well when I'm on the couch, etc.
If I set up the sparsebundle using the WiFi Ethernet ID, will that prevent me from backing up when connected via wired? Or vice-versa? How does Time Capsule handle this?
    Thanks,
    Rob

  • Making legacy AFP work on Mavericks for Time Machine on NAS

It has been well documented that Apple has abandoned legacy AFP on mavericks.  This creates problems when trying to use time Machine on previous generation NAS drives.  In fact this was broken on Lion.   http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20110808120424119
Has anyone figured this out for Mavericks?   There are many threads on this on the web, but I have not found a definitive solution.

  • Time machine on NAS - shared with 2 Macs and some PC's

I just got a new MacBook Pro and have an iMac. I'm running time machine successfully on a USB drive hooked to my MacBook. I want to buy a big 1-2TB NAS drive, hook it to my network, and use time machine with both Macs as well as use the storage for 2 PC's on my network.
    a) is this feasible?
    b) If not, is it feasible with just the Mac's and no pc's?
    c) is any particular brand of NAS most compatible with Time Machine

TM will only back up to drives that are formatted Mac OS X Extended, Journaled. NAS devices do not use OS X so TM will not work with them. TM will not backup Windows drives. Most USB based NAS devices may provide a pass-through USB port to which you could connect a separate USB drive exclusively for TM, but I cannot assure you that will work.
I assume you do know the difference between a USB external drive system and a NAS device? They are not the same things. Most NAS devices use Ethernet - preferably Gigabit because anything slower is really unsuitable for network backup (as are USB drives.)

  • Receiving error (OSStatus error -6602.)  setting up time machine on NAS

I have a Macbook Air and a 1TB WD My Worldbook and have been unable to setup time machine for backups, I keep receiving the following error - Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -6602.) It is connected to my airport extreme - dual band any thoughts on what I need to do to get this to work. I had to uninstall itunes 10 and downgrade to 9.2.1 so I can see my shared folder and what saved me was that I manually copied my itunes library to the network drive.
I am new to Macs and know tech basics so please be gentle.
    Thanks for any insight.

I had the same problem. WD does indeed support Time Machine set up on the WD World.
The acrobat file walking you through the 15 second set up [hurrah] can be found here: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=mbworld [click on the user guide link to download].
My problem was that I was trying to login using my user name rather than the wd_backup that is required via Time Machine.... did not read the set up instructions very carefully.

  • Time machine using NAS

Just installed 10.8.4 on MacBookPro and no longer can connect to Netgear NAS.  Get a message:  Version of server trying to connect to not supported.  Checked passwords and all config info and they are correct.  Apple help line not interested in giving any help.  Has anyone been able to resolve this issue?

  • NAS-based Time Machine, Snow Leopard and new backups

    Hi all,
I have a new NAS server (Netgear ReadyNAS) and have configured my Snow Leopard MBP to use it for its Time Machine backups.
I create the first backup over gigabit ethernet, and subsequent backups occur over wifi.
This happens as normal for about a week or so, until the following error appears:
"Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.”
So, twice now, I've duly plugged in my MBP and it starts a backup from scratch, copying the usual 450ishGB over onto my NAS. I then disconnect, and the backup works fine for a week or so, until the error appears again.
The only blogpost or help article I could find relating to this is here: http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-b ased-backup-errors.html but when I follow that process, I get the ultimate error:
"** The volume Time Machine Backups could not be repaired."
The backups are perfectly sound - I do a test restore of a random file daily - but this error is very annoying.
Any ideas as to how I could repair it? Or as to what might be going wrong on my backup volume?
    Thanks,
    Maritn

Let me know if is all ok.

  • Time machine on non Apple nas

I have been backing up to a Goflex Home network drive with TM for some time.  About every 60+ days, I get the validation error, need to create a new backup message.  These new backups are time consuming in addition to losing all history.  Although TM is a great theory, in practice it just doesn't work.  Before you tell me that this is not supported, I see the same problems on Time Capsule drives.  I have all but given up on this product.  I have tried repairing the drive with just about every solution being proposed.  The best solution I have found is http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-b ased-backup-errors.html.  I have tried this with every failure and have most recently gotten almost there.  Now after following all the directions, I get that the file system is read-only.  If I do ctl-i on the volume, I get me - read & write, staff - read only, everyone - read only.  I have unlocked trying to change for staff and everyone, but it won't let me change.  Any ideas before I give up on TM?  I am running 10.9.5 on a 15" mid 2012 Macbook Pro with 16GB.

    1.  Good idea, but all the personal information is ficticious.

  • Time machine corrupted sparsebundle? how to repair? time machine restore not working

On my macbook pro, after starting with Cmd-R, I erased the hard disk, re-installed Mavericks and I want to restore my back up with Time Machine. I select the NAS where the backup is, it sees the backup file but it says: "There is a problem with this backup and it can't be restored". I also copied the backup file (with extension sparsebundle) to another external hard disk and tried to use it from there but I have the same problem. With my iMac (as the laptop is not usable since I started it with cmd-R), when I double click on the backup file (ext sparsebundle), it mounts and I can actually see and access the files that are there. I do not understand why the restore is not working with the Time Machine. It seems the sparsebundle is corrupted. I tried these instructions: http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-b ased-backup-errors.html
But I am stuck at this step: tail -f /var/log/fsck_hfs.log
    iMac-6:~ root# tail -f /var/log/fsck_hfs.log
/dev/rdisk3s2: ** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    /dev/rdisk3s2: ** Detected a case-sensitive volume.
/dev/rdisk3s2:    The volume name is Time Machine Backups
/dev/rdisk3s2: ** Checking extents overflow file.
    /dev/rdisk3s2: ** Checking catalog file.
    /dev/rdisk3s2:    Invalid key length
    /dev/rdisk3s2: (4, 57529)
/dev/rdisk3s2: ** The volume Time Machine Backups could not be verified completely.
Nothing seems to happen even after a few hours (like 3 hours). The sparsebundle bakcup file is about 200 GB big. It does not seem to do anything as I do not notice any disk activity.
Could someone please advise how to do the restore with the Time Machine or how I can repair the backup file?

Well, if Time Machine is the only thing on that hard drive and there is only one partition, sooner or later, Time Machine will fill up the entire thing and you can't use it for anything else.
Now, you can start over, but that will mean that your Time machine backups will be wiped out. If that is what you want, it is a rather easy process easily accomplished in Disk Utility:
With hard drive connected, open Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities). Highlight the Time Machine hard drive (the top entry for it). Click on the Partition tab. In the window, pick 2 partitions under the "volume scheme" and then slide the little thing at the bottom to adjust the size of each partition. Make sure the format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and, under options, click the GUID partition scheme. Name each one (i.e. "Time Machine" and "backups") and click "apply". Disk Utility will first erase the drive and then create 2 partitions (2 totally separate drives so to speak). You're done.....
You can then set up the one for Time Machine and the other to drag over whatever files you want.

  • Time Machine query..?

    Hi
I have a Mac Book Pro that recently declared itself full, due to the size of my iPhoto library. On recommendation of one of my geekier friends, I bought a NAS (iomega home network cloud edition) with the intention of moving iPhoto and iMovie/iDVD files onto it. To test, I have moved my IMovie and iDVD files over. iMovie and iDVD both seem to pick up the NAS and work fine (if a little slower).
However, I have a Time Machine problem...
I am using a non-wireless external 500GB WD hard drive as my Time Machine. It works fine, although I have to remember to manually plug it in. Now...I need it to back up BOTH my Macintosh HD and the new NAS. I have spent all afternoon reading articles on this and have used a couple of Terminal prompts and am now at the point where I believe Time Machine is finally recognising the NAS (it already backs up my DropBox all by itself).
    - When I look at the backup on Time Machine in a Finder Window (in the Backups.backupdb folder) I cant see the NAS files
    - When I "Enter Time Machine" The NAS shows up on Time Machine as a Device. It looks like I can see the folders. iMovie event clips look fine. But iDVD project files and iMovie project files are 0kb and wont open.
Help....I dont want to move the iPhoto library until im sure it will be backed up!
    All suggestions gratefully recieved!!

Ok. It took two days but I think its done it. Theres now a file in the TimeMachine folder which was automatically created by the iomega NAS drive called "My Computer.sparsebundle" It appears to be updating by itself. I can go into TimeMachine Star Wars and it looks good. I think i cracked it
    Yay!
    - Do you think the iomega drive is already set up to limit the amount of space it allows to be taken up by backups or will it just fill the whole drive?
At any time in the Iomega setup procedure did you get the opportunity to set any sort of limit?  If not, then no, it's almost certainly going to use all the space available.
You might be able to limit the maximum size of the sparse bundle yourself, though.  See #A8 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
    - theres a second file in the TimeMachine folder called "My Computer-2_0023df8824e2.sparsebundle" dated 3 days ago. Im thinking this is an error created when it failed. Is it safe to delete?
Yup.  It may take quite a while, if it's very large.

  • What drives are time machine compatible?

I'm trying to purchase a NAS or NAS Enclosure and I'm finding that some devices are compatible with time machine, while others are not. Only a couple of the manufacturers do a good job of highlighting if they are compatible or not and I'm driving myself nuts reading up on each drive via 3rd party sites to see if anyone has commented that this drive or that drive works with TM. So, does anyone have a tip for me on how to spot a time machine compatible NAS (or NAS enclosure)? Perhaps a specific tech spec that would indicate TM compatibility? [I'm looking for a 2TB drive or drive enclosure (single drive or dual 1TB with RAID/1) that is TM compatible and allows Web access to files.]

My experience with TimeMachine and a tethered USB or FireWire drive has been quite good - with TimeCapsule and other networked solutions not so good. When I first read about TimeMachine and TimeCapsule my immediate thoughts ran to network reliability and how that would affect the reliability and speed of both the backup and restore process. After more than 6 months of testing both TimeCapsule and other network attached drives with TimeMachine I gave up in disgust. After a few days, weeks, and in one case several months I received a backup failed error and nothing I tried would get TimeMachine backing up again. Oh, there were fixes that worked some times but never all the time and eventually my only recourse was to erase the backup and start over. Not what I had in mind for TimeMachine.
The other thought that crossed my mind early on was about how one could test the validity of the backup. Basically it is not possible you simply trust that it is. You check to see if there was an error during the backup and if there was not you hope the backup is actually good. On more than one occasion I've attempted to restore a file (or more) and experienced a failure. This has happened more often with a TC or network TM than one tethered. In fact, I've only had it happen once with a tethered drive. A backup that won't restore is as bad as no backup at all - worse since it provided a false sense of security.
The final problem is speed. TC is not fast at backing up or restoring. Of course the hourly backups aren't generally a big deal but that first one, or a backup after installing a new program or an OS update can be a biggie. Be ready for an overnight backup. In short, I strongly urge against TC or NAS drives with TimeMachine and so far Snow Leopard has not changed my mind.
