TIME MACHINE ext HD not recognized in WINDOWS  PC

hello ppl....i have a Buffalo Ministation 500gb ext HD which i have recently used as my Time Machine Drive for back up.
But the problem is that the HD is not being detected by any other windows systems since then.
So my doubt is that whether the Time Machine enabled HD gets detected on an other PC for data transfer or not...
Pls help me guys....

It's not clear exactly what you want to do, but even with MacDrive installed, a PC is not likely to be able to make sense of your Time Machine backups. They use a very complex structure, involving multiple hard links at both the file and directory level, which few 3rd-party apps understand.
Also, if you have (or plan to put) other data on your TM drive, you really should partition it first. TM works best if it has it's own, exclusive space (see #3 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for details).

  • Clean installed Snow Leopard, but Lion Time Machine backup was not recognized.

I erased the Macintosh HD and clean installed the Snow Leopard. But when I try to use the Time machine backup to recovery my documents, the external hard disk can not even be recognized. It says "To use this disk, connect it to a Mac with Mac OS X v10.7 or later. The format of the disk was created using Lion which can not be read by Snow Leopard." The fact is that the format of the disk is Mac OS Extended (journaled) and was indeed created by Lion from windows format. So how can I read the disk using Snow Leopard? Thanks.

I it a general problem, affecting e.g. a Mac with multiple partitions.  I get the same with trying to mount 10.7 from 10.6.8.
Not ideal.  Hope a fix will be found. I'd suggest to report this to Apple.

  • Time machine (older) backups not recognized after renaming the drive

    Hi all.
For quite sometime I've been backing up my data (in my Mac Book Pro) using the time machine to an external drive.
Recently I changed the name of the drive I was backing up to from Finder and now I see the older backups using Finder but they're not recognized in Time Machine mode.
Is there anything I should do to make it know that those older files are actually in the same drive? I'm guessing changing a couple of lines in a text-only file (such as an XML file) where there's a file mapping will fix the issue but I'm not sure which file and where exactly that is.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the valuable online resource you shared.
There's a lot of critical information there. Bookmarked.
Back to the issue… Before taking any action I created an additional user in Mac OS. This had nothing to do with the awkward behavior of the TM, it was just something I should have done long ago.
After I created that user I wanted to make sure that the problem persists before doing anything. So I logged of the new account and switched to the admin account, and for the one last time I entered the TM mode. Guess what? While managing users the system must have corrected something and it finally decided to recognize my older backups! This is pretty awkward but it just happened and I'm seeing all the backups in TM mode now.
Thanks again for the help and the link

  • Time machine backup is not recognized in Setup Assistant

Hi, I went through lots of discussion but could not find answers to my case.
My Macbook pro crashed the other day and replaced HDD.
I had Time Machine Backup several days ago and was trying to restore.
I started with install CD and used utility to restore from backup.
It recoginzed the volume of Time Machine Backup and next step, it does not show any backups that I can choose.
I installed Mac OSX and tried "transfer from a Time Machine Backup" but it does not recognize my the backup.
I checked hard drive on other computers and can see backups and no issues with hard drive.
    Can anyone help?
Mac OS X 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard)
Macbook pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core duo
    Thanks.

    Dear Pondini,
I found the .exclusions.plist file at the 3/6 backup and it has the bunch of exclusions list...I guess this was the reason. But I really didn't set this up.
    Thanks again. Somehow, I don't have "com.apple.mail.plist" in "~/zzang/library/preference". I foundt it under "~/zzang/library/containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences/".
    1. I first deleted the current preferences files and copied the com.apple.mail.plist from the backup to ~/zzang/library/preference/ folder.
    2. I also delted all the files under ~zzang/Library/Mail.
    3. I copied contents under ~Library/Mail/ from backup.
    4. I started Mail and saw basic account settings and different mail accounts were there. But all the contents (mail, signature, mailboxes under each accounts (sent, deleted, spam, etc.), mailboxes on my mac, are missing.
    5. I rebuilt the root mailboxes and no effect.
    6. Hence, I checked copied mailboxes and got information and it only has size of 8KB each. When I copied, it was copying 6.6GB. I don't know what is going on here.
    7. Hence, I started again from the process 1 above. It is now copying 6.6GB again.
    8. What I noticed when I started Apple Mail, it says it will import mail but it was very short and then went back to the same status. No contents....
    I looked at more details...
Original backup has V2 directory and no other directories or files ~zzang/Library/Mail while my current Mac created bunch of other things over there. See below images.
    3/6 backup
    Copied mail on the computer.

I just upgraded to the new version of itunes for my ipod touch.  My CD Drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs occurs and it does not show up listed as part of my computer.  How can I fix this?

Your DVD drive? Why would this be missing after a iTunes download?

  • 5th Gen Ipod not recognized by windows or itunes. Have tried it all. Any Ideas?

Hello everyone. I have a 5th generation Ipod I recently purchased that I'm having what seems to be an common issue. When I connect the ipod to my computer via USB, the Ipod is not recognized in windows or Itunes. Occasionally the Ipod will charge when connected but not always. Though this is the same for the old wire I used and the new one I purchased today. Even when shown charging the Ipod is not recognized and there is no noise that a device has been connected. I have tried the 4 R's (without Restore) which I can't do, chaninging the drive letter, disabling start up software, uninstalling and reinstalling all Apple Software. I have tried connecting to another computer and have gotten the same result. When I check the diagnostic screen on the ipod it shows that a usb cable is detected. I have upgraded all my driver software, disabled and reenabled them. I'm almost 3 hours from the nearest store so that it out of the question. I'm curious if anyone has any other ideas and will try anything you think might be the issue and fix. Thank you for time.

From my experience, the only way you're gonna get a PC afflicted with this disease to work with a 5th gen nano is to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes.  Those affected have been exhausted by this ongoing issue.  To update or not to update?  And I always say never update unless you have to, and turn off all that auto update mess!
I have two core2duo lappies running 32b vista.  My workflow dictates 32b fyi.  One is acer aspire running itunes v 11.1 (.0.126),  5th gen nano was originally formatted and works just fine on this machine to this day.  My other is the bigger badder lenovo thinkpad and the 5th gen will NOT mount using any version of itunes past 11.0 (.1.12)  Windows mounts it just fine.  itunes is not having it.  no shirt no shoes no service.
I have both a 4th and 5th gen nano.  The 4th gen works great on both machines, I even successfully tested it with the latest version (11.1.5) before subsequent deletion on the thinkpad!  Weird huh?  I think my next experiment might be to restore my 5th gen w/ a Mac and theeeeen plug it into PC itunez.
I'm at a loss on the thinkpad.  Scanned for intruders.  Cut the Lenovo bloat.  Executed system and reg maintenance.  Took down msconfig to a safe mode + itunes level to attempt to resolve possible sw conflicts but to no avail.  NO NO NO.  Every single dang port, every time on the thinkpad.  Has me feeling like others might get the same treatment by the next itunes update.  :|
    So in summary for me:
5th gen nano and thinkpad are a NoGo on 11.1^  last working version for me = 11.0.1
5th gen nano is working on an acer aspire 11.1.0  but no way in the world am I updating
4th gen nano is kicking 5th gen nano's @zz so what would make me want to buy a new ipod?

  • 802.11ac not recognized on Windows 8.1 Pro under Boot Camp.

I just installed Windows 8.1 Pro under Boot Camp. The issue I am having is that the 802.11ac network is not recognized in Windows. Windows only recohnizes the 802.11n network. When I boot up OSX Yosemite, It works as usual. Anyone else have this problem?

8/8.1 will install fine but there's some stuff you need to do before starting to ensure no issues
    purchase a retail 8/8.1 license
use only a USB2 flash drive
    get a clean 8 or 8.1 ISO
newer machines are more selective with the ISO for some reason (ISOs that worked to install Windows on many different older Macs would not work)
if you've made lots of changes, hacks and adjustments trying to get this work on your own, you should clean install OSX first, do not restore from time machine and start at step 3 to get Windows installed, you can go back later and copy files back to OSX
if you want to try without clean installing OSX, here goes
open boot camp assistant (bca) and choose option 3 ONLY if it reads 'remove/delete' Windows
open disk utility (du) and confirm that your HD now only has 1 single partition ('macintosh HD' unless you've renamed it)
restart machine and do a PRAM reset
open du and repair permissions TWICE
open bca and choose all 3 options (create, download, install)
from here, the process follows the standard boot camp instructions (http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf) but pay attention to step 3 where you do have to manually reformat the boot camp partition
    clean ISOs

  • Ipod not recognized by windows or itunes

OK here's a humdinger: my ipod used to be recognized by my computer (meaning Windows XP), but then abruptly stopped in a catastrophic meltdown that completely wiped my ipod of everything -- didn't even show the menu. Fastforward, ipod is replaced. Windows will still not recognize it -- most of the time. The toolbar says USB device detected and hardware installed and ready to use, but the message that it's not recognized by Windows still appears. Now I said it was recognized sometimes. When it magically is (this is my only description for it because there is no apparent reason), and this is rare, usually after the computer has been turned off for awhile, the ipod will sync through about a fifth of my library then quit. The "disc cannot be found" message appears, and Windows stops recognizing and I'm back to square one. One would think that I now at least have a fifth of my songs on the ipod. Nope, just one for each time this has happened (being 2). Please do not respond with anything having to do with updating or uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, disabling USB 2.0, searching for E:\ drive, Windows Update, the whole appleipod.bat thing, updating itunes, or scanning for new hardware as I have tried these and a few other solutions. I'm just wondering if I'm completely, well, you know. Thanks for your time.

  • Ipod not recognized by windows, itunes, and will not charge with pc.

yesterday, when i went to sync some new music onto my 1gen nano, it did not work (duh). i plugged it in 3 times:
-1st, it displayed the "do not connect screen" for one second, and itunes flashed the screen it shows when your ipod is connected, but then the ipod disconnected itself after that one second.
-2nd, windows gave me a message saying the hardware could not be recognized.
-3rd, nothing at all happened, as has been happening each time i try to plug it in since then.
i've done the 5 R's .. and i've tried all the suggestions shown on posts that sound like mine, including these: Windows XP cannot detect an iPod.
USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date.
iTunes 7 doesn't recognize the iPod.
my ipod will charge when plugged into a wall charger, and it plays normally. also, my brother's ipod (2nd gen nano) is recognized by windows/itunes.

    Hello
I have been having nearly the same problem as Crashcup for the past month. Differences being I am operating with Windows Vista and my iPod is a 160GB Classic. I have gone through all the steps in the troubleshooting documents to no result. I attach my iPod and it is not recognized by Windows, iTunes or even in Device Manager. Not even as an "Unknown Device".
I know there is nothing wrong with the USB ports as two different external hard drives and a video game controller work perfectly fine through them. Same goes with the iPod itself; it continues to play and function normally, and is recognized by a charging device completely separate from my laptop. Just when attached to the computer there is no sign of it.
I am very frustrated that there is no further instruction with regard to what to do with an iPod Classic (as referred to by Crashcup: "...it says to take a photo with an iPhone, or a screenshot with an iPod touch or iPad. WHAT ABOUT THE IPOD CLASSIC????)
Any help would be much appreciated.l=

  • Device not recognized by Windows or iTunes - Blinking green light

When I try to connect my iPod shuffle to my computer (Windows XP), it's not recognized by Windows or iTunes. (i.e. device does not appear in Windows explorer or iTunes) While in the USB port, the Shuffle's green light blinks incessantly. My wife uses an iPod on this machine (under separate user name) and has no problems.
I've tried updating software (iTunes, iPod), restarting my computer and resetting the iPod to no avail. My machine is not on a network. The USB port(s) work fine as I can use my memory stick (no USB cable) with no problems. I've tried connecting my Shuffle under my user name as well as my wife's. Same problem.
Also, I had my Shuffle setup on an old computer (PC, Windows 2000) and it still works fine plugging into that. (I'm getting rid of it soon, hence why I'm discovering these new problems).
Please advise. Since my Shuffle is over a year old, I am not eligible for online chat or phone support without paying for an Apple Support agreement.
I know there's another thread with the same issue that was not resolved on the discussion board.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Recently I used my ipod at work all night, just like normal. After work on the way home, like normal, I plugged it into my aux port on my car's head unit, and plugged it into power. 10 minutes later, in the middle of going over Ortgea Highway(hiway 74 between Orange and Riverside Counties), it just suddenly stopped working. When I plug it into any of my computers at home, nothing happens, it is not recognized or seen. When I plug it into power, it displays either a "sad ipod icon" or a battery with exclamation mark(!) icon. I have brand new power adapters both for the car and home, plus brand new usb cables, thinking that would help. It hasn't and now, since I opened those packages, I am out that $$ and ******. Since I received this unit as payment for electrical services rendered, I have no idea how old it is. Does anyone have any ideas? ([email protected])

  • Using Time Machine to back up to a Windows 2003 Server

I am trying to set up my Time Machine to back up to a windows 2003 server share. I have found some hacks on how to do so, however i am not successful.
What I have done so far:
TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1 in terminal, which got TM to see my shared drives, however, when i try to backup to my specific drive it gives me an error of not being able to write disk image. So i did:
hdiutil create -size 100g -fs HFS+J -volname “TimeMachine Hcomp” Hcomp_000045128a91.sparsebundle
using the appropriate mac address, volume name, and OSX computer name. However, when i run that in terminal, it comes back with a message saying it can only create one volume at a time.
I'm not quite sure where to go from here, I feel so close, but im stuck.
Also, on another side note, If I get this working, I would like to find a way where when TM is backing up data, it does not pop up the work bar window, I would prefer if it just worked in the background, and show it's status in the menu. I dont know if this is possible, But any suggestions would be of help
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the response,
I understand the requirements for TM to work, and In the steps i've been trying, you'll see that the command 'hdiutil create -size 100g -fs HFS+J -volname “TimeMachine Hcomp” Hcomp_000045128a91.sparsebundle ' creates and HFS drive partition on my server share.
I guess i'm not looking for an answer as to why when i enter this command, I get a response of only one volume can be created at a time. Am I missing something in this command?
    Thanks!
Since you are using a hack, and therefore in an unsupported area, I suppose anything possible.
You might browse around the TimeCapsule forum which more closely represents what you are doing than this forum
    The TC forum is here:

It's possible that it may be a limitation of the system, hack or no hack.

  • Replacement Shuffle Still Not Recognized In Windows Or iTunes

    Hello everyone,
I was having the orange/green light issue and my 512MB shuffle was not recognized in Windows or iTunes 7.0.1. I contacted Apple and they replaced my shuffle - after I attempted all documented fixes and running the Shuffle Reset Utility.
I plugged the replacement in and received the message "xxx iPod shuffle cannot be updated. The required disk cannot be found." I found an article on how to remove some temp and application files. I did that and also ran "checkdisk" on my laptop and that error went away. The problem is now the shuffle is not recognized in iTunes or Windows once again. The shuffle did come up for less than 10 seconds as the "F" drive and then disappeared and could not be relocated.
Here is the real rub for me - I plugged the shuffle into my wife's laptop running iTunes 7.0.1 and it works just fine!! Since my laptop is my primary - this is still a major issue for me.
Does anyone have a fix for this? This has to be a Windows disk or driver issue.
Does anyone have a fix for this type of issue? It is obviously a Windows disk or driver issue.

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.
Then try with the iPod in forced disk mode.
    Putting iPod into disk mode.
    Still no joy, see these.
iTunes 7 doesn't recognize the iPod.
    Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod</font color</a>.
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes.
iPod does not appear in iTunes.
Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported.
    Strange iPod behavior.
