Time Machine, external HD, and copying backup to desktop

I've recently starting having problems with my external HD that I use for my Time Machine backups. I'm not able to repair the drive using Disk Elements, so I want to copy some of my backups stored therein onto my Mac HD before I try reformatting the external HD. However, I get the error message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup" when I try dragging the backup folders onto my desktop. Is there any way to salvage the backups before I try reformatting?

If you want to switch to a different TIme Machine backup drive, use this article to learn how to transfer your existing Time Machine backups to the new backup drive, and then use it for regular Time Machine backups.
To have the existing Time Machine backups on the new backup drive, follow these steps:
Connect the new backup drive to your Mac.
Open Disk Utility (located in the Utilities folder).
In Disk Utility, select the new drive's icon, then make sure it has a GUID partition, and is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which you can check on the "Format:" line at the bottom of the window.
If it is not formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a GUID partition. If you do not know how, see the steps in this article.
Note: Back up any important data on the drive before you format it.
Open a new Finder window. In the Finder sidebar, click the icon of the new backup drive and choose Get Infofrom the File menu or press Command-I (⌘-I)
Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" at the bottom of the "Sharing & Permissions:" section is not checked.
Open the Time Machine pane in System Preferences. Choose Time Machine > Open Time Machine Preferences…
Slide the Time Machine switch to Off.
Open a new Finder window. In the Finder sidebar, click the icon of the current backup drive.

Enter an administrator name and password, then click OK to start the copying process. This may take some time to complete because all the backups will be copied.
After the copy has completed, open Time Machine preferences and click "Select Disk…".
Select the new backup drive, then click "Use Backup Disk".

Why do you feel you need to do this? That is such a 'Windows thing' to do!
And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad
Very rarely, but nothing in life is guaranteed (except death and taxes)! If you purchased RAM from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC it will carry a lifetime warranty.

Sudden Time Machine & External HDD Problems -*All Backups gone

I really hope someone can help...
Today, I went to backup my MacBook Pro files using Time Machine and my external HDD, as usual.
Until today, Time Machine and the HDD have been running fine, and today I saw all backups in the HDD going back to September 2011.
However, today when I tried to backup an error message came up saying there was not enough disk space on the HDD. Here's the error message:

Nothing would work. So I deleted 1 backup to free some space, but the same error kept coming. I deleted another backup...no go.
Then all of a sudden all HDD in Finder is showing NO backups/files/folders...nothing!!!
Time Machine still thinks all the old backups are on the HDD. So does finder, which shows the following for the HDD:
Capacity: 159.7 GB
Available: 50.95
Used: 108,747,599,872 bytes (108.75 GB on disk)
Yet NO backups/files/folders are showing on the HDD under Finder and Time Machine won't recognise the old back-ups — ie, it says "Oldest Backup - None, Latest Backup - None"
I've tried all sorts of things... including restarting, shutting down, repairing the HDD via Disk Utility etc and the tips here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...t=time+machine
But nothing is helping.
I really don't know what to do next.
(BTW, by chance, i did keep two of the old backups that I copied over today from the external HDD to my internal HDD)

1. Although I wouldn't recommend what you are asking to do nor do I know if you can do it with the device you are buying (if it has its own RAID card you may not be able to do anything with it.) However, for a software RAID using Disk Utility you would need to partition each drive before creating any RAIDs. Let's assume you partition each drive into two volumes. Call them A1 and B1 and A2 and B2. Then you can create one RAID using A1 and A2, and a second RAID using B1 and B2. Keep in mind that you cannot access two partitions on a single drive simultaneously, so when trying to access one RAID you will find that you lose any RAID speed benefits when trying to access the other RAID to, say, copy data from one RAID to the other or when trying to copy data to both RAIDs from another source.
2. If a RAID is connected to a FireWire port or to the USB port on the AEBS, then it can be used as a TM backup drive. TM can only have one backup volume on any one computer, but multiple computers can backup to the same TM backup drive or to other backup drives, but it would be more efficient for all the computers to backup to the same TM volume. TM will backup each computer separately into discrete folders on the backup drive.
In my opinion I would recommend having a single 2 TB RAID volume that is connected either to a FireWire port on one of the networked computers (and set up as a shared drive) or connected to the USB port on the AEBS. Each computer can then backup wirelessly to the drive except for the computer to which the drive is connected via FireWire, if that's how you choose to set it up.

NAS-based Time Machine, Snow Leopard and new backups

Hi all,
I have a new NAS server (Netgear ReadyNAS) and have configured my Snow Leopard MBP to use it for its Time Machine backups.
I create the first backup over gigabit ethernet, and subsequent backups occur over wifi.
This happens as normal for about a week or so, until the following error appears:
"Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.”
So, twice now, I've duly plugged in my MBP and it starts a backup from scratch, copying the usual 450ishGB over onto my NAS. I then disconnect, and the backup works fine for a week or so, until the error appears again.
The only blogpost or help article I could find relating to this is here: http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-b ased-backup-errors.html but when I follow that process, I get the ultimate error:
"** The volume Time Machine Backups could not be repaired."
The backups are perfectly sound - I do a test restore of a random file daily - but this error is very annoying.
Any ideas as to how I could repair it? Or as to what might be going wrong on my backup volume?

Time Machine, Migration Assistant, and copying specific files to a new machine

Things were running fine. Then repeating kernel panics! A fresh Mountain Lion install seemed to fix things. To test whether the panics were related to some application or preference, how can I restore only my data, specifically the Aperture library, iTunes library, and iMovie library and nothing else from my Time Machine backup? In other words, how can I see the file structure of the Time Machine backup so I can copy only specific files and folders?

Restoring specific files or folders
Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu and the restore interface appears. You can literally see your windows as they appeared "back in time."
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time (the timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup drive). If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
Note: Dates in pink indicate the data resides on your Time Machine backup device. Dates in white indicate the data resides on your Mac. In OS X Mountain Lion and Lion, portable Macs have the feature of local snapshots. See this article for details.
You can also perform a Spotlight search in the Time Machine Finder Window search field to find a file. Simply type the Spotlight search field and use the back arrow to have Time Machine search through your backups to find what you are looking for.
Before you restore a file, you can also use Quick Look to preview a file to make sure its the one you want. Highlight the file and press the Space Bar to bring up a quick look.
To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder. If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both.

Thanks for the advice. I had assumed no problem with the backup since I did an ethernet connection and fresh backup a couple of days ago. That backup completed.

There are error messages and perhaps you know what they mean.
In the meantime, today, I read about repairing the backup as you suggested and now have the MB connected by ethernet to TC and running the repair. I was a little confused by this advice:
•To Repair the sparse bundle on a Time Capsule, connect via an Ethernet cable if you can; it will be much faster. Then mount the sparse bundle by opening the TC in the Finder and double-clicking on the sparse bundle. Drag the sparse bundle into the lower part of Disk Utility's sidebar and select it. (When repairing a sparse bundle, the messages won't appear in the center area of the screen; so click the Log icon in the toolbar, or select Window > Show Log from the Menubar to display them.)
Because I dragged the sparsebundle to Disk Utility with no problem. The instructions (shown above) say to double-click on the sparse bundle but when I did that nothing special happened that I could see. So I dragged it over to Disk Utility manually. I am thinking it is a typo and should read "double-click on the TM backup folder" — what you think?
The other thing is that advice says that the messages won't appear on the center of the screen but they do for me. I also opened the log which is saying the same thing.
So hope I am doing it right.
Any advice on the TM Buddy error messages appreciated.

Time machine issues - ejecting time machine server volumes and slow backups

i've got 2 client machines set up to back up using the OS X 10.5 Server - problem is one is a laptop and therefore needs to be disconnected from the office network frequently. Time Machine doesn't seem to want to let go of the Server drive at all - just won't unmount. Any ideas on this?
In addition, if a backup is running and then interrupted, the next backup runs at absurdly slow speeds. Is there any way to remedy this?
Also, are there any good resources on Time Machine out there? the Apple docs are pretty paltry, and although I understand that its operation is supposed to be dead simple, it would be good to understand how it thinks a bit so as to be able to troubleshoot problems like the ones described above.

Time Machine does large and unnecessary backups

I had a thread about this before but I marked it as solved (I thought it was), so I'm opening a new thread as the problem still exists.
Time Machine insists on backing up many folders from scratch, even though the data is unchanged. Folders include
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support
Macintosh HD/Library/Audio
Macintosh HD/Applications
There are others but these are the main offenders. These backups, which are often around 150-200 GB, happen about once a week and the resilt is that my Time Machine drive gets full.
I have tried some strategies but nothing helps thus far. See previous thread here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5391782
This is driving me nuts. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Found the solution:
Excluding the Parallels Folder in Documents from TM backups did the trick.
The next backup was back to the usual 16 MB per hour....

Time Machine External drive and data only [no OSX on it] partition both

are locked. I don't know what happened but think I might have done a Get Info and did an apply to enclosed = but if so, I was expanding access at the time to all readwrite and not restricting.
In any event, my TimeMachine external is now locked = even using Administrator login I can't open it. And my data partition which is separate from startup partition with OSX is also now locked.
I saw the following discussion tip but thought I would check lst - how do I handle this? If OSX is not on the data partition, fine and I'll follow those instructions but what about Time Machine which does have OSX somewhere on it, I assume.
I'm still running pre-SnowL. on this machine.

No - I was scared to do so tile I knew for sure that I could apply the suggestion ref the OSX TimeMachien drive and the nonOSX data partition. I wanted to be really sure.
"Locked" means there's a little lock in the lower L hand corner of the icon and there is no checkbox for locking and the privileges are set to Custom and I can't get them to be changed to ReadWrite or whatever.

Purchased a 5T external, formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), trying to drag and drop Time Machine. Tells me "The backup can't be copied because the backup volume doesn't have ownership enabled." How do I enable ownership? What is ownership?

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
This technique will only work if the volume you're copying to is the same size, or larger than, the one you're copying from.
First, open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button. You may have to unlock the settings first by clicking the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Authenticate as an administrator.
Delete the volume you're going to copy from the list of backup destinations. Then turn Time Machine OFF.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased. That shouldn't be a problem, because you don't want to mix backup and non-backup data on the same drive anyway.
If the volume you're copying was encrypted by Time Machine, you may have to unlock it first. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar of the Disk Utility window.
Turn Time Machine back ON and select the new volume as a backup destination. You can also continue to use the old volume, if you wish. The two will be alternated when both are available.
CAUTION: If the volume you're copying is corrupt, as shown by Repair Disk or Verify Disk in Disk Utility, then that corruption will be copied to the new drive. Don't copy data from a corrupt volume on a malfunctioning drive. Put the drive aside and don't use it until you're sure you'll no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and take it to a recycling center. Do the same if the Restore operation fails with "disk errors."

Aside from the size of my backup drive, which I will increase at some point, I'd really like to have time machine backing up all system folders, especially Applications. How to I reset this hidden exclusions?

Well, to unmount the drive, you can use the Terminal application.
Start in Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
When the Terminal window opens, type - without the quotes and with the space at the end - this:
"diskutil unmount "
Then drag the icon of the unmounted drive from the desktop into the Terminal window - the drive location will be added to the end of the command above. It should look something like this:
diskutil unmount /Volumes/volumename
Then press enter (return).
That should unmount the drive. Now you can try the Time Machine process again with perhaps a different interconnect cable for the GoFlex.

I have had no problems backing up my MacBook Pro 2011 to my Western Digital My Book Live through a Linksys EA4500 router until recently. I've made no major changes. I've ran a diagnosis on my back up drive with no problems. The Time Machine back up starts, but about after about 5 to 10 minutes I get the error message. I can see the shared drive in Finder. The light on the drive blinks while it starts the back up. I can see the shared folders on the networked drive. The backup process starts but for some reason it just stops. Can anyone help?

I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)

I've been getting this warning on my MBA for the last week: "Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “LaCie-2big-NAS.” an error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, us Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I have MBA and iMac, both running Maverick (10.9.4), backed up to LaCie NAS. However, when I go to Disk Utility on the MBA and the iMac, the LaCie does not appear and thus can't be selected to run repair. The iMac seems to be backing up to LaCie without problem. And even seems that MBA is backing up sometimes; when I check Time Machine, I can find files added in the last couple of days.
Is this a real problem? What's fix?
