Time Machine FAIL (again)

I don't have a question here: just want to share my experience, because I don't have a blog and writing is more therapeutic than banging my head against a wall.
Yesterday, I need to use MS Excel to work on some spreadsheets in order to do my taxes.  If course, my version of MS doesn't work with Lion, but I think I'm so smart because I have a backup startup drive, which runs 10.5.  So I restart in Leopard, and before I even open my documents I see the Time Machine clock start to turn.  Whoops--I don't want to up this old OS!  What if it interferes with the main Lion Time Machine?  I go to stop it as quickly as I can, but I still see the Horizontal Barbershop Pole spinning for a while.  Finally it gives me the error message "Time Machine cannot complete backup. 1.27 TB required, 90 GB available" (or something to that effect--I didn't write it down).  I go back to Excel, finish my work, and keep my fingers crossed that this little hiccup didn't corrupt my system.
Next morning, I spin up the computer (using Lion).  On schedule, Time Machine starts its work...only it doesn't get too far.  I get the same message I saw earlier about "1.27 TB required, 90 GB available."  Great--it's trying to create a whole new backup.  So, I come to these forums and start poking around for help, start drafting up a question, then go back to TM Prefs and notice that it says the last backup is from yesterday at 4 pm.  That's just before I restarted in 10.5 and this whole issue began.  So I figure I'll just go into Time Machine and restore from that point and we should all be good....right?
Unfortunately, when I open Time Machine, all I see is "Now."  No way to go further back in time because there's nothing there.  Now, this is puzzling....maybe when I went to 10.5, for some reason Time Machine lost its reference to the sparsebundle.  I go back to Prefs, check the selected disk, and that seems right....still showing 90 GB of 2 TB available.  I go to the Finder, open the Time Capsule, and find three .sparsebundles: one for my MacBook Pro, which looks intact (360 GB in size); one that was created yesterday at 5 PM, which totals 460 MB (presumably that was created when 10.5 attempted to create a new backup); and one that was last modified yesterday at 4, which is....3.6 GB?  Hold on, let's do some math:
360 GB + 3.6 GB + (406 MB = 0.406 GB) = 364.006 GB visible in Finder
2 TB = 2000 GB
If 90 GB available, then 2000 GB - 90 = 1910 GB used, according to TM Prefs
What happened to 1.546 TB of backup data?
As I sit and ponder whether I'm losing my mind, or if my math is actually better than my computer's (which is actually the most comforting thought of the day), the TM icon starts spinning again.  I'm fully expecting the same "not enough space" message...but instead, it starts backing up.  Only, it's doing a full backup: right now, the progress meter reads "91.07 GB of 1.27 TB - About a day."  No going back now--several months of history, now Gone.
(You may be asking yourself: your progress meter is already at 91 GB?  Wow, your Time Machine backs up fast!  Not really--I'd just gotten about this far in this post when Safari crashed.  Granted, I had a bunch of other windows open--because I still have to, y'know, work--including a bunch of sites that are heavy with HTML5 animations and whatnot.  Safari opened back up with all those same windows open--yay Lion!--only, the window into which I'd been typing this post was back at the login screen--boo Lion.)
Anyway--now, I'm awaiting the Time Machine Backup and keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have to go back and retrieve any old files.  (Note to self--never rely on Time Machine as a versioning tool.)  In the Finder, I'm looking at those .sparsebundles again, and something odd is going on: there are still the same three .sparsebundles: "My MacBook Pro," "My Computer," and "My Computer (2)_0017f2092828."  "My Computer.sparsebundle" is the one that was listed at 3.6 GB before the full backup began; now it's listed at 1.49 TB.  It still claims to be last modified at 4 PM yesterday.  "My Computer (2)_0017f2092828.sparsebundle" is still 406 MB, but it was last modified....one minute ago.  From this, I'd infer that the 1.27 TB Time Machine Backup is somehow affecting the smaller file....but its size isn't increasing.  Presumably, it's actually writing into the larger file, but why the modification date isn't changing is a mystery.  No sense worrying about this right now....
If you're still reading and still interested, I still need to rant.  This whole thing began so innocently.  I resisted upgrading to Lion because I'd heard (read) the griping and I was pretty happy with Snow Leopard anyway.  But about 7 weeks ago (when I was still on SL), I decided I'd put together a calendar for my wife for her birthday.  I fire up iPhoto, put together this beautiful calendar filled with pictures of us and the kids, and click "order."  Only I'm notified that I can't order the calendar from this version of iPhoto--I need to upgrade.  (What?  Why would you put the order button there--why have a Calendar feature at all--if you can't order it?)  I can't even export the calendar I spent so much time creating (my first thought, because I've put together calendars on my MacBook before).  So I visit the App Store.  I can plunk down $15 to upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto, or for just $15 more I can upgrade to Lion.
Now, I don't enter into this lightly.  Lion has been out for something like 7 months and I've held out till now.  But I figure by now, they've probably figured out most of the bugs, and besides I'm in the tech industry so it helps to get familiar with the newest and coolest.  OK, let's do this thing....
The problems began almost right away.
That calendar I ordered that started this whole thing?  Saved the comments and photos in the new and "improved" iPhoto, but didn't save the formatting.  When it arrived, there were several pictures in which heads were cut off because the default cropping was applied.
What happened to the month column in iCal?  Why would anybody want to get rid of it?
Microsoft doesn't work, of course.  I didn't think this would bug me, but I miss it.  And several other apps don't work either...Adobe CS3, among others.  Should I downgrade back to Snow Leopard?  Maybe.  But wait, there's more....
Two weeks after the upgrade, just when I'm seriously considering downgrading, I get this message: "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you." Like a good little monkey, I come to these forums to figure out what this means and how to get my backups working again...only to find that, well, TM is screwed.  I could browse and retrieve data from existing backups, but couldn't make any new ones.  According to Pondini and anybody else who's gone through this, I would have to erase all existing backups and start from scratch.  So I went ahead and chose "Start New Backup," and after about three days of maddening errors (".sparsebundles" turned into ".purgeables"....progress bars that never made any progress....complete system freeze, requiring manual restart...) I finally have a new Time Machine backup in place.
Now, I want to downgrade to Snow Leopard more than ever.  But my previous system has disappeared from Time Machine (not once but twice!), and all the posts I've read about downgrading without TM seem to require wiping the drive clean and installing fresh.  I'm fortunate that I have most of my data on a separate drive from the system, but I'm nervous about making the change: I'm doubtful that everything will go back to the way it was, especially the stuff that I've done in Lion (and iCal, iTunes, iPhoto) over the last couple months.
Either way, the upgrade to Lion has been an incredible waste of time and energy.  My first computer was an Apple IIGS in 1987.  I've been using Macs ever since, even against the advice of friends who thought the company was collapsing in the late 90's.  I think I used Jaguar for two years withou so much as an application crash.  But I'm so much more frustrated with Apple now than I've ever been before.  Think I'll go take another look at Linux before I climb back onboard with another OS "upgrade."
Cheers, may the force, &c.,
tw

Only a quick note to tell you that I too am frustrated with my Mac expereince after being a user since the mid-90's. I bought a new Air and had enough issue with it that I gave in an bought a Pro and will be selling myA Air. It's better for me, but I gotta tell you...still having all sorts of problems - most all stemming from Time Machine. Gaaah! Best of luck!

  • Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

  • External Drive Full - Time Machine fails miserably

I've been backing up to a 250 GB G-Drive since September. It was working fine until a few days ago, when I started getting the message "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory". Turns out I only have 60.2 MB of space left on the drive and my backup files are each about 62 MB in size. Time Machine is supposed to continue on making backups, if i'm not mistaken, and delete the oldest existing backups to make room. Well it apparently isn't doing this. The console displays this:
    +27/05/08 12:31:53 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1118] Backup requested by user+

Now I also had movies and TV shows stored on the drive and deleted a number of them, freeing up 12 GB of space or so, and Time Machine is again able to back up without a problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Try freeing up some space by manually deleting some old backups.
select your HD in the Finder sidebar and start time machine. go all the way back to the backup you want to delete. click on the "gear" button in the Finder tool bar" and select "delete backup". You'll have to enter your admin password to confirm.
Delete a few old backups like this and try backing up again.

  • Time Machine fails repeatedly with no problem detected on the external disk

Since a couple of days, Time Machine fails repeatedly, several times a day. I repair the disk with the Disk utility, that finds no error, then I reset Time Machine as indicated, and after one or two successful backups, it fails again, with the following report given by the Time Machine Buddy widget:
    Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Copies de sauvegarde Time machine/Backups.backupdb

I insist, the disk utility doesn't find any problem in the external USB disk. Should I reinstall the OS?
Thanks a lot for any help!

  • Time Machine Fails when VPN is Active

Running Cisco VPN that allows local access to my 192.168 network with no problem for other applications. However, Time Machine fails to find my local NAS drive when the VPN is active. The NAS and MBP are on the same subnet. Any thoughts or reasons why this is occurring and how to resolve the issue?
    Thanks.

If you're using the Cisco client built-in to OSX, be sure that "Send all traffic over VPN" is disabled. With the client from Cisco, I think the checkbox is called something like "Allow local LAN access." Be sure that that is enabled.
Note that this setting can be overridden by the VPN administrator, and often is. (Usually for security or company policy reasons.) So do not be surprised if the checkboxes have no effect for you. If that is the case, then you'll have to speak to the VPN administrator to see if they'll make an exception.

  • Time machine fails on new iMac

I upgraded to a new 21.5" iMac from a g5 iMac.  I transferred my files and have two external hard drives one with photos and one for time
(all worked great on the g5). Main programs in use on the g5 is lightroom and iTunes for the iPhone and iPad.    I have been unable to get time machine to work with my files installed. Both the iMac and backup drive have been replaced with no results. When ihave a clean system with my files I have been able to use time machine for two days before it failed at best.
Every time time machine fails my system starts to act strange and I am forced to do a wipe and reinstall. Have done a complete wipe and install on the iMac and reformatted the new external drive (have left the photo drive off as I got a failure with out that drive connected).  I have not installed any of my files and so far time machine works.  I suspect some sort of corrupt file. Any suggestions on the next steps? I plan an waiting a few more days on the backups just to be sure they work without my files or programs installed.

    Wire fox terrier wrote:
Is there any software that can detect corrupt files? Disk utilities says all drives are fine.
    Not really.
Disk Utility (and other similar apps) check the File System on the disk (the various directories, catalogs, etc., for completeness and consistency, not the internal layout of each file.
Since different kinds of files have different data layouts, and no central registry of the rules,  there's no realistic way to check all the possibilities.
Unlike most backup apps, Time Machine does index them, however, and in the process sometimes finds problems.  If there's a serious problem, it normally sends a message naming the file, then fails, so you can exclude the file from being backed-up, fix it, or delete it.
Considering the symptoms you're seeing, it's likely either an intermittent hardware problem, or something you dragged from your G5 was already damaged, or damaged in the process, or came from a different OS (like Windoze) and didn't get translated properly.   Since you get no messages, it's going to be very tedious to narrow it down.
    From your previous post:
Both a capture program from apple tech and send to apple via about this Mac (system profiler) would not work.
Do you mean they wouldn't run properly, or you sent them to Apple and they either haven't responded or said they couldn't find anything?

  • Time Machine fails post 10.10.3 update

I updated to 10.10.3, and have had repeated Time Machine fails since this occurred.  Time Machine suggests I run Disk Utility and repair the disk.  I did this, and found no problems (with both Verify Disk and Repair Disk options).

Hi, TM is such a pain & the worst Backup App I've ever ebcountered outside of no backup at all, that being said the great Pondini has covered most all of it's problems here...
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

Not that it helps much but...

  • Why does Time Machine fail to restore and keep the original file after I have provided my Admin password?

I'm attempting to recover a group of lost files from Time Machine. The files are backups from a mobile app within User/LibraryMobile Documents/.
I'm able to find the lost files, but Time Machine failed to restore them after I select 'Keep Both' and then enter my Admin Password. The screen returns to the desktop and the finder window for the file I'm trying to recover, but nothing else happens.
    I hope someone can help.

    Summary:
I've been having problems with Time Machine since I enabled it. For some reason it refuses to backup any file in my account (/Users/ritchiem/). I have spoken with the an Apple 'Genius' and they were dumb founded. So I ask here in the hope that someone has had this issue occur and know what the cause is and how to fix it. I'm not really looking for work-arounds, though I will cover that later.
    *Problem Description:*
A new 500GB external drive was erased and formatted HFS+ Journaled.
TimeMachine was then opened and enabled on this drive.
Back Up Now was selected and left to run assuming it would take a while on the 500Gb internal drive that had a around 200Gi-250Gi of used.
    It ran successfully.
When entering TimeMachine, history shows the top level drive and navigating down the Users folder shows only my 'test' user account. My user account 'ritchiem' is not listed.
There was no error presented from Time Machine an the System Preferences panel reported it was successful.
Console.logs shows that backup was performed successfully.
Steps already taken to address issue:
I have verified/repaired permissions on my boot drive, a few files were changed but none in /Users/ritchiem
I have deleted the Time Machine preferences: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
I have tried a second external hard drive, in this case it was more interesting:
It was reported as being to small to perform the backup. So I added some exclusions such as my large iTunes library.
This allowed the Time Machine to proceed but again there was no backup performed of any file in home space.
This is where I thought I must be doing something wrong and went to the Apple Store the genius tried all the usual suspects, permissions, preferences. But no success.
It was only then that one of his colleagues picked up on discussion that it was only my user that was being skipped and suggested the risky move of renaming my user. He showed me the 'Advanced' panel in the Account System Preferences. (I never realised you could use a nice gui to do the renaming of a user in all the right Apple places.)
So I swapped users and renamed my account, and moved my home space to a new user name. mv /Users/ritchiem /Users/martin
I then logged back in to my account to verify the rename all worked and it had.
    _*Time Machine now worked!*_
HOWEVER, that is a total hack. I use the username 'ritchiem' all across my local network and it was not recommended to have a user ritchiem but a home space in /Users/martin.
I renamed my account back to 'ritchiem' and Time Machine again is blocking backups of /Users/ritchiem
Somewhere on my drive there MUST be an exclusion that is preventing the first user that I created on my 2008 MacBook from being backed up. So far my grep-ing of the filesystem for 'ritchiem' has not shown any likely suspects. If anyone here knows where the mystic plist/file is that I need to zap then that would be great.
If of course you have another work-around that does not require me to rename either my account or my home space then that would be great.
Oh and I also tried to trick TimeMachine by creating a symbolic link in /Users to my home space (ln -s /Users/ritchiem /Users/martin). It resolves the link and refuses to backup the contents of my home space just as before.
Please remember here that in all backups that Time Machine performed there was no error, console.log and the UI all report success.
Now if I had a new blank machine and some time I could test out the theory that it is always the first user of a freshly installed machine. However, if other people have it working then it is perhaps not that simple.
    TIA
    Martin

Thank you for all your advice and suggestions. Apologies for the delay I had difficulty locating my original install DVDs.
    Summary
I have performed all the steps and checked items as requested however backups are still not including my home space (/Users/ritchiem)
What I do find interesting is the output of the TimeMachine backup log (at the very end of this VERY long post) which states that 84.8 GB should be backed up but only 24.3 GB is actually backed up.
Would love to know why TM decided 60.5GB of data should not be backed up but not explained in any of the log files and a successful backup reported.
Before I go on to the details of what i've done, I should also mention in case it is important that I have of course been logged in with my user (ritchiem) whilst performing all of these backups. I assume that is normal and that you shouldn't have to log out for TM to actually backup your data. To verify this previously I have logged out user ritchiem and logged in as a test account. The path /Users/ritchiem still failed to backup. I have not tried this recently, however, I would be really surprised if you had to log out of your user account for the data to be backed up.
    Detail
So to answer V.K. first: My drive did indeed have some items that it said I should repair. Hence the search for the install DVDs. I ran the Disk Utility from the Leopard installer and it repaired the drive. The verify now runs green.
As I had just rebooted the machine and it was all fresh I repeated Pondini's previous steps as well.
    * Disabled TM
    * Exited System Preferences
    * Deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
I then also deleted the Backups.backupdb from my external drive so everything was fresh and new. I would have just formatted it (which would have been waaay faster, but I have some copies as backups on there for now.)
I started the TM prefs panel and added a few items to the disabled list to a) speed up the backup but also b) I have a 320g internal drive and only a 250g external. My total disk usage is 288 which won't fit, especially with the breathing space TM likes to have.
Here is the data from console.log from the first two backup runs:

    *Other Steps*
Whilst running TM I also setup dtrace to log every file open: (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071031121823710)
Looking for any files in my home space that it might have opened returned none:
    ramaII:~ ritchiem$ grep "/Users/ritchiem" tm.dtrace |grep "entry backupd" |wc -l
    0
Yet looking for all the files backed up from the /Users directory there were 458!
    ramaII:~ ritchiem$ grep "/Users/" tm.dtrace |grep "entry backupd" |wc -l
    458
Dtrace also highlights the files that backupd uses unfortuately the only files it opened before it started its backup were:
    0 17720 open:entry backupd /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist

    *Next Steps*
I've been thinking about what i could try next and not having many ideas. So I'm really hoping someone here will have a flash of inspiration.
If I find some time at the weekend then I will try renaming my account again and verifying that it does backup under a new name.
Just incase there is something odd about the first user account created, i.e. UID:501 I will make a new 'ritchiem' account (which will have the next UID, UID:504) and see if that gets backed up, I can try this while my current account has been renamed. If that does work then I can copy my files back in to that account and verify it isn't something in my home directory that is upsetting TM. Although I doubt this is the case as it never read any files from home space during the backup process.
Here's hoping there is something in the above logs etc, that give a clue to what might be going wrong.
    Cheers
    Martin

In making an attempt to copy my files to a different external hard drive, I ran into several issues with document files that were "read-only" so the copying stops. (they were just a couple of pdfs and photos). I deleted all of those files. I then ran back up again after verifying the external I have designated for Time Machine. (Ive also completely erased, repaired and verified this drive several times over the past few weeks) Backup failed, again.
I feel like my next move is to start deleting the "files" that are causing the errors listed above in TM Buddy (they are mostly photos in iphoto)... but then I realized that some of those errors are associated with the backing up of my iphone.
Just now, I pasted a portion of my system log into Textedit, and the application just hanged... for 2 hours. I finally force quit it.

Hi!  I did exactly as you said. I was able to backup with my home folder excluded, but was not able to do so after I removed the exclusion. It crapped out 5G before finishing.
Here's the TIME MACHINE BUDDY LOG:
