Time Machine Fail with Lion

TM appears to have stopped working properly after I installed Lion on my 3 yr old MBP.
Specifically, TM seems unable to do incremental back up.s
Tried to back up to an existing, external HD used for TM for some time. Instead of deleting older files, TM insisted it needed a full 220 GB, so I deleted the entire, older back up and then let TM create a brand new 220 GB back up.
An hour later, after the computer had sit unused, TM tried to back up again and -- even though no files had changed, said it needed 220 GB.
Concidentally, or not, my BackUp to iDisk also failed.
Since TM had always backed up successfully until the Lion install, I assume that is the problem.
Any ideas?

There's a small chance it's the preferences file; try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, try Verifying your internal HD, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
Then Repair Permissions, per #5 there.

Lost login keychain; Lost previous time machine backups with Lion install

I downloaded Lion and it would not install on my 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 gb 1067 mhz ddr3 Mid-2009 Macbook Pro. I got the exclamation mark with hard disk irrepairable error. I took it to the local Apple store. They did a number of hardware tests and after several false calls saying it was ready (when I arrived to pick it up and tried to set up OS (select language etc) I got spinning beachball), I finally brought it home with Lion installed. All seems well, and I restored the data from Time Machine backup done under Snow Leopard. To my surprise, I find old versions of the login keychain - last updated 2010. I had 2 separate time machine backups going back six months, but when I tried to browse one for the newer keychains, I find that all previous Time Machine backups have been removed and all I have is the Time Machine backup from Lion install. So there are two related problems: one is that I lost keychain data and the other is that I can't restore from Time Machine backup since the only backups that seem to be there have restarted with Lion. Another factor, is that the technicians had to reset my user password in order to set up Lion and I subsequently changed it back to my own password. Any solutions to locating old time machine backups or restoring recent keychain entries?

How so I know...

Time Machine Error with Lion

Been using Time Machine with no problems for a couple of years now. It's wonderful. Upgraded to Lion two weeks ago and it's been working flawlessly. However, two days ago, my Time Machine backup quit working. I'm not getting the following error message every time I try to perform a backup:
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk"
I have run Disk Utility twice a day for the past two days and nothing. It says the volume is fine and does not need repairing, yet the backup continues to fail.
I have checked Software Update and there are no updates available. I have checked the drive manufacturer and there are no firmware updates.
I have (4) internal disks. All of them check out fine, permissions are checked, repaired. Nothing.
The Apple tech document suggests deleting my backup and doing a new one. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a backup in the first place, right?
It's been working just fine until now. Any ideas on how to proceed?

Time Machine wireless with Lion?

I've been using an AirPort Extreme with an external 1TB hard drive plugged in to the USB port for Time Machine with Snow Leopard. When I upgraded to Lion, it started failing - about once a month Time Machine would decide it had to do a whole new backup from scratch. Apple support tole me that this configuration is "not supported".
I don't like having to shell out $299 for what amounts to a new AirPort with a hard drive included. Is there any other alternative to wireless Time Machine under Lion?

A little history: Time Machine was introduced with Leopard. Some of the pre-release info did say it would work, and it was tested (with mixed results) during the beta period, but when Leopard was publicly released, it did not work and was not supported. Some folks discovered that they could use that configuration anyway by employing a Terminal command that allowed "unsupported" destinations. A few months later (about 10.5.4, I think), that command was no longer necessary -- apparently to allow backing-up to USB disks connected to Time Capsules and/or 3rd-party NAS drives that meet Apple's requirements. That's what some incorrectly assumed was Apple support.

I can't get Time Machine to run after upgrading to Mountain Lion. I even reformatted the drive using the drive utility in the utilities folder.
I also tested the drive for errors and the disk utility indicates that it is OK. Time Machine runs until it backs up approximately 5GB of data and then fails.
Has anyone else experienced this problem. I am using an Iomege Mac Companion 2Tb drive.

I'm having trouble having Time Machine to work in ML. I have a Time Capsule (1 TB), which until the upgrade was working fine. It even worked great with a little hack, TimeMachineEditor, to change the frequency of the back ups. I turned that off, just in case it wasn't ML compatible, still doesn't seem to be working properly. I don't want to erase that Time Capsule, not at least I'm comfortable with ML.
I thought I'd post this here in this thread since it is related - of sorts. I will check out the troubleshooting link to see if it has any help.

Time Machine Fails with New Internal HDD

After vertical lines began proliferating on the screen of my iMac (intel core duo, late 2006 running Leopard 10.5.8), my Apple tech swapped it for a "similar" iMac, running the same OS, and dumped the contents of the original HDD onto the much larger new one. However, instead of an intel, the swap got me one of the original iMac G5 PPCs made in early 2006. After several days of having to reinstall software and other awful adjustments, the biggest problem is accessing Time Machine and having it continue with the new set-up (I gave the new HDD the same name as the old one).
I can enter Time Machine but it remains static and I can not access any previous backups the usual way... I can click open the external drive (LaCie 1TB, Mac OS Extended, case-sensitive, journaled) and copy files if need be. It is filled only at 1/4 capacity.
While doing that, I noticed in the backup list a last document "2011-11-01-024657.inProgress" at 3:47am followed by an alias folder "Latest" with the time stamp of 1:47am. I take it that 3:47am backup was interrupted when the iMac was shut down.
I turned on Time Machine yesterday to get backups restarted but the first backup "failed." Now that the computer is different, will I have to reformat the LaCie to engage TM once more? Partition for two backup sets? For any of these options, I'd appreciate a step-by-step.

By default, Time Machine only shows the backups for the Mac it's running on. To see the backups for a different one, you need the Browse... option, per #E2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

That's not a problem, and is the default when you let Time Machine format a backup drive.

That could be any of a number of things. See #C2 in the Troubleshooting article. It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it. If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages.

Depending on the space available, maybe, and it may be wise anyway. Time Machine will start a new set of backups for the new Mac, so will need lots of room. Worse, when the backup disk gets full, it will not delete the oldest backups from the old Mac to make room -- it will delete the oldest backups from the new one, instead. (That's been fixed in Snow Leopard and Lion, but not Leopard.)

Time Machine fails with drive connected to Airport Extreme

First of all, I've had myriad problems with Time Machine, even when it was connected directly to my MBP. But after the recent updates, I installed them and hoped it would work wirelessly. I re-formatted my 120GB OWC drive (my MBP has 30GB available of 120GB). I have already been down the road of making sure I've formatted the drive correctly.
I excluded my system folder, my entourage identity, downloads, and my Parallels Windows XP file from the backup. I connected the drive to my Airport Extreme (not the gigabit version) and started the backup. Basically, it gets about 5 GB into the backup, moving very slowly, and then fails, saying that it couldn't locate the drive. And that part is true--I can't seem to locate the drive on my network anymore either. And eventually, after another hour or so, my Airport Extreme drops as well, and isn't even available. Even when I unplug the AE, and plug it back in, it still doesn't show up...but after about an hour or so...it pops back up and is available, working fine. My iPhone sees the same problem with AE dropping and then coming back. When the wireless service drops, I can plug an ethernet cable into the AE and I can access the internet fine, so it's not the cable modem (Time Warner).
Is anyone else seeing this problem? I'm no guru and appreciate that Macs just seem to work correctly. But Time Machine is making me pull my hair out. It's been an unmitigated disaster from start to finish.

This is probably the most sensible post I've read on the issue. I've spent the last 2 days trying to get my 500GB LaCie Quadra hard drive to work with my Airport Extreme (the square one, yes .
I've formatted it correctly with the Disk Utility (multiple times!).
Airport Utility sees it just fine. I can back up to it when it is connected directly to my MacBook via USB.
But when the drive is connected via USB to the Airport Extreme, Time Machine doesn't see it -- unless I turn on file sharing with guest access read and write. That seems less-than-secure to me even if my network is protected.
Without guest access the drive appears in the shared section of the Finder, but I can't connect to it. I've tried all three combinations under "Secure Shared Disks" but none of them work.
Seems like its just too flaky to use an external disk connected to the Airport Extreme.
Happy to be pointed in the right direction... are there specific file permissions I should be setting my external drive to?

Time Machine fails with "error while linking files on the backup volume"

One of my drives was nearly full. I moved some folders from that drive to one that had more space.
The next TM backup failed with "error while linking files on the backup volume". A full backup is about 620 GB, although this backup shouldn't have been a complete one. There was 570+ GB free on the drive.
A Disk Verify reported "Drive appears to be okay." Earlier TM backups appeared to be fine (at least accessible). I swapped the TM drive for another, initialized it, and TM used that drive with no complaints.
What does the message mean?

Your user account may not have permission to see the logs.
The sentence beginning "If the message area is blank ..." shows how to figure out if that's the problem, and how to fix it.
Post back if it's not clear, or doesn't work.
The Tip had the answer. It was permissions.

Time machine fails with Synology NAS

Help...
I can't get Time Machine Back-ups to work with my synology NAS.
I can see shared folders in finder.
Have tried with a shared folder on drive in NAS (get error message: cannot create sparsebundle...)
Also tried with USB drive connected to NAS (process get started and get to around 10M backed up and then fails with error message: )
Tried with Mac and NAS on same switch - and got same results.
Appreciate any advice you can offer.

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want. I know Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

<rant>Software should not bork on a single file like this. It *should* proceed with the backup, and mark this file as needing attention. It *should* then tell you what your options are for this file. Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive. But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot restore emails with time machine. In Lion TM created a folder in Mail called recovered emails(or similar) No such folder is created since ML. I am able to see the email I want to restore, but it then disappears

Time Machine fails repeatedly with no problem detected on the external disk

Since a couple of days, Time Machine fails repeatedly, several times a day. I repair the disk with the Disk utility, that finds no error, then I reset Time Machine as indicated, and after one or two successful backups, it fails again, with the following report given by the Time Machine Buddy widget:

I insist, the disk utility doesn't find any problem in the external USB disk. Should I reinstall the OS?

Time machine fails after three successful attempts consistently.

I am using time machine but it fails after three successful attempts consistently.
I am using a brand new 4TB G-drive. I have tested with Apple support and they are sure the problem is not with the disk.
The error message is "Unable to complete back-up folder". System log states:

I have trawled Google and Apple and seen that this problem has been experienced by many but I have yet to find a solution to resolve my problem.
Does anyone have a solution?

I have seen this precise problem on a client machine. It would run one to three backups fine, then start giving this error.
I tried every hint in the other discussions. I repaired the backup volume. I ERASED the backup folder and started over. I erased and reformatted the drive. Every time, it would get me one to three clean backups, then the same error all over again. I tested the snot out of the drive and there was absoutely nothing wrong with it as a drive.
In desperation, I upgraded the client to Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion took the "bad" backup set just as Snow Leopard had left it, and backed up to it with NO COMPLAINT. It's still backing up fine several days later.
I guess the upshot is that Time Machine in Snow Leopard has problems that Time Machine in Mountain Lion has outgrown.

Ok, TIme Machine rocks!
I screwed with some applications, I tried to make the dock and desktop my own and F'd things up.
What I was trying to do was to create stacks in doc.
I wanted stacks for apple apps, stacks for business apps, stack for art, and stacks for personal.
Plus I wanted easy buttons for kids to pick out games as well.
Idea was good but I did not execute it well.
While I can do everything that I wanted to do, what I needed to do was create alias of apps and then put those into folders and drag them into doc. I did not I put apps in folders and tried to put those in dock. I screwed up the computer, BUT I had Time Machine.
With Time Machine you can rescue the whole drive. There are a few caveats here too.
One you have to do this reinstall with the OS-X install disk.
Information is not truly clear on line and I called apple.
When I was trying install the screen said it was going to reinstall system. This made me think that I was going to install system and applications but what about my docs. I was not sure. I called apple and the tech I got on line said no problem I would get all back, he was sure! Then he put me on hold, ask someone made sure, but came back saying I would get everything back. System, programs and docs.
When you do a restart from install disk it gives you choice of install, you have to choose from the above drop down menus- reinstall from time mach. NOT install from main instruction on screen. This is a little hidden but for those with some experience should be easy to find.
I then ran into another issue. I ran reinstall and it looked good till about 4% was completed and then failed. Message said try again or lose all. Not a great message. I did this over and over 5 time, each time same results. I at this point thought I maybe was losing battle. For anyone that has lost data, they know it is a battle to get back data.
I then thought that I have external drives in a dazzy chain over firewire configuration. How about taking the drive with Time Machine back up and making 1st and the solo drive- WORKED.
Took about 3 hours to back up. I have older iMac and others may go quicker.
I did get everything back and was very happy.
Interesting thing after reboot was that the computer had to reintroduce it self.
Programs came up like mail and had too find accounts, mail saved, trashed and still valid.
iphoto and iTunes needed to find their associated files. As when iTunes came up it 1st showed no music, no video, Tv shows, but quickly started to find items.
Lastly Time Machine had to rescan the computer as it does when you 1st install program.
So over all great program!
My one question would be if I am using time mach and computer dies and I tried this reinstall on a new computer would it work as well?

This looks like it was a TERRIBLE restore. The whole point of restoring from a backup is that everything should work as it did on the date of the backup. No missing files, no reconfiguration of applications...
