Back up to time machine failed.  Error, "Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only". Back up has been working.  drive is not read only.  How do I fix this?

    Hello,
    http://pondini.org/TM/C6.html

  • Time machine fails backup

    Can anyone advise me?
I use Time Machine to backup. All has been well the backups were flawless until recently when I decided that I needed to encrypt my sensitive work and personal files placing them into an encrypted Apple Disk Image on my hard disk. Ever since then at some stage Time Machine had decided that there is insufficient disk space and the backup fails.
When it first began to fail I increased the backup disk space and began a fresh start backup.
The backup disk is now 1 TB and the total amount on my hard disk to be backed up to backup is 183 gb which includes the disk image which is 40 gb.
The only change has been the creation of the disk image otherwise everything else is the same. Would it be better to have a number of disk image files and spread the encrypted material across smaller dmgs?

Thank you for your response which is very helpful. I have changed the dmg to a sparse bundle and Time Machine appears to be handling the backup better.
Initially I was confused about the difference between a sparse image and a sparse bundle but read in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2001162?start=0&tstart=0 what the difference is and see that the sparse bundle appears to have been developed by Apple for exactly my kind of problem.
You say that "… be aware that disk image files are not backed up at all while the image is mounted."
I do not wish to disagree but when I was backing up the vanilla dmg and also last night backing the sparse bundle dmg the back up has worked and did work on the mounted disk. In my case the disc is always mounted as it contains the bulk of the files I work on. Perhaps I have misunderstood what you were saying.
Thank you again for your response.

  • Time Machine fails with "error while linking files on the backup volume"

One of my drives was nearly full. I moved some folders from that drive to one that had more space.
The next TM backup failed with "error while linking files on the backup volume". A full backup is about 620 GB, although this backup shouldn't have been a complete one. There was 570+ GB free on the drive.
A Disk Verify reported "Drive appears to be okay." Earlier TM backups appeared to be fine (at least accessible). I swapped the TM drive for another, initialized it, and TM used that drive with no complaints.
    What does the message mean?
    Thanks,
    harv47

See #A1 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Your user account may not have permission to see the logs.
The sentence beginning "If the message area is blank ..." shows how to figure out if that's the problem, and how to fix it.
Post back if it's not clear, or doesn't work.
The Tip had the answer. It was permissions.
What follow are the messages for the last unsuccessful TM backup (on v.3), followed by
the successful TM backup on the replacement drive (v.1). The line
"Copied 11 files (0 bytes) from volume Bay 3 HPFS+." was odd.

Do anyone know what to do?

I traveled for a few months w/o my backup system available, but it ran fine for 2 days upon returning home. I have 2 MacBook Pros I run Time Machine backups over my network to a Western Digital MyBook attached to an Airport Extreme.
I started seeing Time Machine failures a few days ago, and noticed that my drive was spontaneously disconnecting, it seemed to happen right after TM had run through its process to identify files needing backup. It generated a generic error 11 in console, but more specically
hfs: unmount initiated on Time Machine Backups on device disk2s2
In efforts to clean it up I installed new firmware on the drive and ran the Verify backup from If you can't back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine -
I let it for a while as its doing a full backup but it has not stopped like before with the "backup failed message".

TM quit because there's problem with that file.
For now, don't touch it. Instead, exclude it from TM and run another backup (there might be another problem).
To exclude it, go to TM's Preferences and click Options.
In the next panel, click the plus sign at the bottom.
In the sidebar of the next panel, select your home folder, then navigate to the folder +/Users/Superman/Music/iTunes/Album Artwork/Cache+
Select it, click Exclude, then Done.
Then do a +Back Up Now+ from the TM icon in your Menubar.
If TM runs ok, then you need to figure out what's wrong with that cache file.
I'm not particularly familiar with iTunes, but you can probably just delete it. Check the iTunes forum for that.

  • Time Machine failed backup

Today I used DiskWarrior 4.3 to check all my drives - it repeatedly failed to rebuild my Time Machine Backup drive, stating that there was insufficient memory.
Now repeated attempts to back up have failed.
"Backup failed"! is all I get - Time Machine is still ok, that is, I can still open it and retrieve old files, but not backup new ones...
    Any ideas?
Any help gratefully received, but I have to leave work now, so cannot reply until tomorrow morning, apologies for that.
    Cheers

Sorry guys - DiskWarrior failed to rebuild my Time Machine backup drive twice because of "lack of memory", and when i subsequently went to backup at the end of the day the backup failed, twice.
In TM preferences my normal TM backup drive was greyed out and I consequently thought that it was unavailable.
However, all I had to do was click on it - and it became available and all was well, as simple as that!

  • Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

If that is the case simply reboot the TC.. or if that fails, reboot the whole network, restarting in correct order..

Time Machine warning: An error occured while creating a backup folder. What to do???

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

I haven't backed up my computer in over a year. When I tried to back it up today, Time Machine says 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder.' When I check the side of the partition where I manually saved old photos and documents (including all the pictures from the year I studied abroad/traveled a bunch), the folders are there, but NONE of the files are.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, or how I could fix it? I really don't want to lose all those photos

So you were doing a time machine backup to another partition on the same hard drive? Just trying to gather some information so i can provide a helpful response.

  • Time Machine Back Up Error

After two succesful back ups Time Machine gives back up failed message and can not succesfullt re-try to back up. I am using a bew Western Digital Portable Hardrive purchased form Apple Store, 2TB, encrypted (My Passport Studio). Connection is via supplied firewire 800. Apple Store actually say Time Machine compatible so it is formated correctly etc straight from the box. I also conected the drive to my imac and exactly the same thing happened, backed up succefully twice then failed on third, also hard wired via firewire 800 connection.
I find this odd, the encryption side is nothing to with it, the volume is mounted and I can see "My Passport Studio" it in the sidebar on finder, all looks perfect - can anyone give me any ideas what the problem maybe, all I want to do is use this new portable drive as my TM back up for my MBP as I am away on business alot and need the reassurance of frequent back-ups - thanks.
