Time Machine fails during automated backups

I use a 1.5Tb external drive connected by USB as my backup drive for Time Machine. I reformatted it, and the first backup Time Machine did was successful. However, it can never do the regular automated backups, it keeps saying "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder." I tried going into Disk Utility and "repairing disk" and it doesn't help. The only way it works again is if I eject the drive (which it has to be forced to do every time), turn off the drive, and turn on again. It can then usually do an initial backup, and then again it fails the automated backups. I'm beginning to think it is the drive's issue. It is an internal drive that's housed in a external enclosure.

I've tried repairing the permissions looking for trouble in log files, but haven't had any luck.
Try verifying your internal HD, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). If that fails, you'll have to use your Install disc to repair it, per the yellow box there.

  • Time Machine failing to mount backup volume

    Hi
I set up a network shared drive (afp) and successfully used it for Time Machine backup from one of my Macs.
However, from my other Mac, when I turn on TM and choose the network drive, nothing happens -- in the TM preference pane the disk doesn't get selected and the message remains "Choose Backup Disk...". In the console I get the following:
    20/5/08 4:39:13 PM System Preferences[185] FSMountServerVolumeSync received error: -36
    20/5/08 4:39:13 PM System Preferences[185] Failed to mount url: afp://;AUTH=No%20User%[email protected]/500GB%20Network%20Storage
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Here's the solution:
During the backup attempt Time Machine creates the bundle image on the share. This is called <computer’s name>_<string>.sparsebundle (by the way, string is the MAC address of the local en0 device without colons). You should keep the exact name in mind (e.g. by copy & paste or by looking in Console or by constructing it yourself from computer’s name and MAC address).
Afterwards you start Disk Utility and create another “sparse bundle disk image” on your local drive. Volume Size should be the designated maximum size of the Time Machine backup (don’t be afraid, only by using the image it will increase in size). Further parameters: Volume Format - Mac OS Extended (Journaled); Partitions - No partition map.
After this use the exact name Time Machine assigned to its bundle image to rename your newly created image (if not already done while creating your own image). Finally you copy the image on the share and manually start a backup via menu bar.
Voilà. Afterwards Time Machine should start the tedious initial backup.

  • Time Machine Freezes During Initial Backup

I have a 500gb external Western Digital HDD I am trying to use as my Time Machine backup drive. The computer I'm using is a 24" iMac with about 250gb of data on it. The external drive is partitioned as a GUID / Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
When I try to run the initial backup, it will randomly freeze during the process. Sometimes it gets halfway through the backup and freezes, other times, right away. Sometimes there is an error, other times there isn't.
I have tried re-partitioning the drive many times, manually starting the backup and also letting the backup start on its own. All of my applications are closed when the backup begins, but no matter what I do, I cannot get the initial backup process to complete.
Ironically, I had the same problem on ANOTHER iMac of mine, with the same model Western Digital drive. The backup would freeze randomly during the initial process but I would keep manually re-starting the backup until it magically finished the backup. Now that computer seems to be working fine.
However, I still can't get this other iMac to work. I find it strange that two separate computers with two separate 500gb Western Digital drives would have the same problem with Time Machine, unless the problem is with Time Machine itself.
Any ideas out there how to resolve this?

Why do you assume it's TM, not WD?
    There are many possibilities.
Did you completely erase the drive before formatting it? Sometimes the utilities, etc., that come on new drives can interfere with TM.
Is your iMac an Intel? If it's an older PPC, you need the Apple Partition Map, not GUID.
Is this USB or FireWire? USB is often much slower and less reliable.
If it's USB, does it have it's own power, or does it draw from your Mac? Often there's just barely enough to run a drive; if you have another USB peripheral, it can take enough power to interfere with the disk.
Does it have an automatic "spin down" feature? If so, can you disable it?
Does it have the latest updates? I thing I saw a post here recently that a WD update fixed, but I can't find it now.
Are you running any anti-virus scanning? If so, exclude your TM drive from it.
Sometimes excluding it from Spotlight as well, at least during a large initial backup, can prevent conflicts between TM and Spotlight.

  • Time Machine fails - cannot make backup folder

For the past two weeks I've been having some major issues backing up my computer with Time Machine. It's become quite a process.
    iMac 27"
    Mountain Lion
I am backing up to a brand new - well bought in February, '14 - 1TB external hard drive and there is NOTHING else in there except the TM backups.
For the past two weeks it's been failing the automatic backups.
There is PLENTY of room on the drive.
    The exact error message reads:
    "Time Machine Error
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder
Latest successful backup: [time and day entered here]"
To remedy this at first it was as easy as un-mounting the drive and then plugging it back in and it was fine.
Now I've got the disk utility open and constantly repairing the drive and this is only a temporary solution.
Below is a small sample of the report from the utility each one is dated.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this without having to purchase a new drive?
In February the old external drive I had started to freak TM out and it just erased ALL my backups which I desperately needed due to the same error / failure. That drive had plenty of space as well but I lost all my stuff anyway.
I searched the forums for a solution and found nothing helpful.
I know the TM isn't for archiving and another question I have is, How can I transfer or even rename the backup folder that TM makes and move it to a 'free drive' to prevent overwriting? Right now I just keep buying new drives which is ridiculous.

OK well Time Machine backed up a little bit within the last hour since I posted the above. As I'm sitting here working the backup stops and I get this stupid error again:
So as usual, I go to eject it and I get this ridiculous message. I have no idea what could be 'using' this disk! It's not attached to any programs.
It's got one folder of images and pdf files and the time machine backup on it.
So I force eject it and plug it back in. But if I drop down the little circle at the top task bar for the backup info, It says it backed up successfully at 3:20.
GAH! What the *&^% is wrong with this infernal machine?

  • Time Machine fails after first backup

iMac has a 2T HD with only a little less than 1T used.  Have 4T external G-drive partitioned in two.  One half I do SuperDuper backups on and the other half for Time Machine.  SuperDuper backups go fine.  The first TM backup went fine and continued fine for three days, then would not again - failed.  I ran disk utility on the G-drive (repair disk) and the the TM back up went fine but only once, then failed on subsequent attempts. I get hourly messages saying it could not back up.  "Unable to complete backup. An error occured while creating the back up folder".  If I repeat with disk repair with Disk Utility, I can do another TM backup, but only the first one, then I get the messages again every hour that it can't back up.  Ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks

  • My Time Machine stalls during initial backup on external hard drive even after several hours.

We have been using Time Machine and an external hard drive to back up our MacBook for almost a year now.  Recently, the hard drive (using a USB) was removed without ejecting it properly.  After that, the auto backups began stalling.  We tried setting up Time Machine all over again but the initial back up stalls at different places (like 6MB of 87GB) even if it's left for several hours overnight.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?  If not, can anyone suggest another inexpensive way of backing up our files from our MacBook?
    Thanks!
    Shane

It might have created a new user and loaded under that.. new user being the old user. But if you have issues do it again, only this time pick where the backup will go.
    http://pondini.org/TM/16.html
The other questions might also be relevant as a new hard disk will make the Mac appear to the TM backup as a new computer.
    See 14-18 for restore info.

  • Time Machine Freezes during full backup

I just got a new MacBook Pro. I am trying to create an initial Time Machine full backup.
The process freezes after processing 6.39GB out of 462.76GB. Further, Time Machine
also globally freezes after the following steps:
    Reboot
    Try full backup
    -- it freezes
    Stop backup
    -- backup stops
    Try to start backup again
TimeMachine is now completely frozen. Further, all the top-right menus seem frozen.
    Try to restart machine
Machine cannot completely shutdown -- it stays in a zombie state trying to shutdown forever
Force shutdown (pressing power button continously until the machine shuts down).
I've tried this process about 10 times.
Same behavior using 4 different types of backup disks.
(network attached via afs, direct usb, direct fire-wire).
Here's the console output is below.
The "freezing" seems to coincide with the output of:
    "kernel[0]: AppleVTD: waiting space (512)"
Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
    Thanks!
    Luis.

    =====

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • In Time Machine "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while completing the backup folder

Time machine fails to complete backup

I've been getting the Unable to Complete Backup error message for several days.  Last good back up was 11-22-13 at 11:13PM.  I am running an iMac with OS-X 10.7.5.
I did the above steps in Console and got a huge string of lines; I tried to edit all repeitious ones that were the same, but still ended up with a lot of lines that seemed to develop more different processes over a few days.  Sorry to put all this stuff in here, but I don't honestly know what to make of all of this code language.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • Time Machine fails to backup home space.

    Summary:
I've been having problems with Time Machine since I enabled it. For some reason it refuses to backup any file in my account (/Users/ritchiem/). I have spoken with the an Apple 'Genius' and they were dumb founded. So I ask here in the hope that someone has had this issue occur and know what the cause is and how to fix it. I'm not really looking for work-arounds, though I will cover that later.
    *Problem Description:*
A new 500GB external drive was erased and formatted HFS+ Journaled.
TimeMachine was then opened and enabled on this drive.
Back Up Now was selected and left to run assuming it would take a while on the 500Gb internal drive that had a around 200Gi-250Gi of used.
    It ran successfully.
When entering TimeMachine, history shows the top level drive and navigating down the Users folder shows only my 'test' user account. My user account 'ritchiem' is not listed.
There was no error presented from Time Machine an the System Preferences panel reported it was successful.
Console.logs shows that backup was performed successfully.
Steps already taken to address issue:
I have verified/repaired permissions on my boot drive, a few files were changed but none in /Users/ritchiem
I have deleted the Time Machine preferences: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
I have tried a second external hard drive, in this case it was more interesting:
It was reported as being to small to perform the backup. So I added some exclusions such as my large iTunes library.
This allowed the Time Machine to proceed but again there was no backup performed of any file in home space.
This is where I thought I must be doing something wrong and went to the Apple Store the genius tried all the usual suspects, permissions, preferences. But no success.
It was only then that one of his colleagues picked up on discussion that it was only my user that was being skipped and suggested the risky move of renaming my user. He showed me the 'Advanced' panel in the Account System Preferences. (I never realised you could use a nice gui to do the renaming of a user in all the right Apple places.)
So I swapped users and renamed my account, and moved my home space to a new user name. mv /Users/ritchiem /Users/martin
I then logged back in to my account to verify the rename all worked and it had.
    _*Time Machine now worked!*_
HOWEVER, that is a total hack. I use the username 'ritchiem' all across my local network and it was not recommended to have a user ritchiem but a home space in /Users/martin.
I renamed my account back to 'ritchiem' and Time Machine again is blocking backups of /Users/ritchiem
Somewhere on my drive there MUST be an exclusion that is preventing the first user that I created on my 2008 MacBook from being backed up. So far my grep-ing of the filesystem for 'ritchiem' has not shown any likely suspects. If anyone here knows where the mystic plist/file is that I need to zap then that would be great.
If of course you have another work-around that does not require me to rename either my account or my home space then that would be great.
Oh and I also tried to trick TimeMachine by creating a symbolic link in /Users to my home space (ln -s /Users/ritchiem /Users/martin). It resolves the link and refuses to backup the contents of my home space just as before.
Please remember here that in all backups that Time Machine performed there was no error, console.log and the UI all report success.
Now if I had a new blank machine and some time I could test out the theory that it is always the first user of a freshly installed machine. However, if other people have it working then it is perhaps not that simple.
    TIA
    Martin

Thank you for all your advice and suggestions. Apologies for the delay I had difficulty locating my original install DVDs.
    Summary
I have performed all the steps and checked items as requested however backups are still not including my home space (/Users/ritchiem)
What I do find interesting is the output of the TimeMachine backup log (at the very end of this VERY long post) which states that 84.8 GB should be backed up but only 24.3 GB is actually backed up.
Would love to know why TM decided 60.5GB of data should not be backed up but not explained in any of the log files and a successful backup reported.
Before I go on to the details of what i've done, I should also mention in case it is important that I have of course been logged in with my user (ritchiem) whilst performing all of these backups. I assume that is normal and that you shouldn't have to log out for TM to actually backup your data. To verify this previously I have logged out user ritchiem and logged in as a test account. The path /Users/ritchiem still failed to backup. I have not tried this recently, however, I would be really surprised if you had to log out of your user account for the data to be backed up.
    Detail
So to answer V.K. first: My drive did indeed have some items that it said I should repair. Hence the search for the install DVDs. I ran the Disk Utility from the Leopard installer and it repaired the drive. The verify now runs green.
As I had just rebooted the machine and it was all fresh I repeated Pondini's previous steps as well.
    * Disabled TM
    * Exited System Preferences
    * Deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
I then also deleted the Backups.backupdb from my external drive so everything was fresh and new. I would have just formatted it (which would have been waaay faster, but I have some copies as backups on there for now.)
I started the TM prefs panel and added a few items to the disabled list to a) speed up the backup but also b) I have a 320g internal drive and only a 250g external. My total disk usage is 288 which won't fit, especially with the breathing space TM likes to have.
Here is the data from console.log from the first two backup runs:

What I find interesting is that only it only copied '191916 files (24.3 GB)' It said it was going to backup '103.06 GB requested (including padding)'.
As requested here is the hidden .exclude.plist file, I printed the contents using the Terminal rather than TinkerTool.

Whilst running TM I also setup dtrace to log every file open: (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071031121823710)
Looking for any files in my home space that it might have opened returned none:
    ramaII:~ ritchiem$ grep "/Users/ritchiem" tm.dtrace |grep "entry backupd" |wc -l
    0
Yet looking for all the files backed up from the /Users directory there were 458!
    ramaII:~ ritchiem$ grep "/Users/" tm.dtrace |grep "entry backupd" |wc -l
    458
Dtrace also highlights the files that backupd uses unfortuately the only files it opened before it started its backup were:
    0 17720 open:entry backupd /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
    0 17720 open:entry backupd /var/db/.TimeMachine.Cookie
    0 18506 open_nocancel:entry backupd /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd.bundle/Contents/Res
    ources/StdExclusions.plist
The only file on that list I haven't seen mentioned before is the StdExclusions but I'm sure that is the same on everyone's machines... just incase though:
    ramaII:~ ritchiem$ cat /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources/StdExclusions.pl ist

    *Next Steps*
I've been thinking about what i could try next and not having many ideas. So I'm really hoping someone here will have a flash of inspiration.
If I find some time at the weekend then I will try renaming my account again and verifying that it does backup under a new name.
Just incase there is something odd about the first user account created, i.e. UID:501 I will make a new 'ritchiem' account (which will have the next UID, UID:504) and see if that gets backed up, I can try this while my current account has been renamed. If that does work then I can copy my files back in to that account and verify it isn't something in my home directory that is upsetting TM. Although I doubt this is the case as it never read any files from home space during the backup process.
Here's hoping there is something in the above logs etc, that give a clue to what might be going wrong.
    Cheers
    Martin

  • Time Machine Freezes During Backup!

    Hi there,
When I back up my computer for the first time using Time Machine, it gets to around 53.2 GB. After that, it sits there with the blue progress bar at the same level. Then, i get a message that says I did not eject the disk properly, and then Time Machine alerts me that it could not finish the backup. NOTE: When it says the disk has not been ejected properly, I still see the disk in both Finder and disk utility. Also, I currently have the disk in 2 partitions, but I'm only using the Mac OS X (Journaled) partition for my Time Machine backups. Please help! Like I said, it seems to eject my external hard drive (Hitachi 250 GB Simple Drive) after freezing up for a while. I am able to use other things on my computer the whole time. The only application that was open during the backup was iTunes. Here is the log from Time Machine buddy:

As a first step, launch Disk Utility, select the backup volume, and run "Verify Disk" (NOT "Repair Disk"). It will take a long time to run, maybe hours. If any errors are found, copy all data on the device to another drive, then run "Repair Disk." Be prepared for the possibility that "Repair Disk" may destroy the volume beyond recovery. It may also fail to repair the damage, in which case you should replace the device -- DO NOT erase it and continue to use it.

  • Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

In making an attempt to copy my files to a different external hard drive, I ran into several issues with document files that were "read-only" so the copying stops. (they were just a couple of pdfs and photos). I deleted all of those files. I then ran back up again after verifying the external I have designated for Time Machine. (Ive also completely erased, repaired and verified this drive several times over the past few weeks) Backup failed, again.
I feel like my next move is to start deleting the "files" that are causing the errors listed above in TM Buddy (they are mostly photos in iphoto)... but then I realized that some of those errors are associated with the backing up of my iphone.
Just now, I pasted a portion of my system log into Textedit, and the application just hanged... for 2 hours. I finally force quit it.

Hi!  I did exactly as you said. I was able to backup with my home folder excluded, but was not able to do so after I removed the exclusion. It crapped out 5G before finishing.
Here's the TIME MACHINE BUDDY LOG:

  • Time Machine Folder Renamed (2) Backups Fail

    Hi all,
After updating to Snow Leopard, Time Machine backups would fail with an error (2) displayed by 'Time Machine Buddy'.
On my Time Machine volume within the Backups.backupd folder my computer folder has had "(2)" added to it i.e. computername (2).
When I found this I went straight into the 'Sharing' system pane and change the computer name back to the original name (deleted the "(2)").
This change was not reflected in the Time Machine Backups.backupd folder.
I do not have permissions to change the folder name. I tried adding myself as an owner in 'sharing and permissions' but still could not change the folder name. I logged in as the 'root' user but still could not change the folder name.
Has anyone a solution to this problem other than setting up another external drive? e.g. terminal commands.
    Thanks.

Be glad you didn't make that work. Apple puts special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups for a reason: when we mere mortals fool with TM's backups, we can hopelessly corrupt them.
*Never change, move, or delete anything in a TM backup via the Finder.*
