Time machine fails, now can't eject any external HDs

A series of backup related problems have occurred:
Upgraded to Lion and then TM failed to backup: " Error while copying to backup disk" (using Lacie d2 Quadra HD that has been performing well for 2 years)
I also have a second Iomega MiniMaxHD with a carbon copy clone of my Snow Leopard mac on one partition and a second partition with other iphoto/.itunes/ document backup and now I cannot copy my iphoto library to this HD for a backup: " Operation could not be completed because the item "iphoto Library" is in use", even though all applications are off. Tried multiple times and the transfer of the iphoto library always fails midway through.
I have spent ~8 hours websearching and troubleshooting, including just about all of the TM Troubleshooting steps listed by Pondini
(pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting) and just need some advice on what to do now because now I am afraid that i have lost both my TM backup and my ability to  backup to other drives because a new problem has arisen: everytime I try to load an external HD I can't eject it: can't eject because error message says that the "Finder is using" the external HD and then I have to Force Eject, risking data loss.
I have so far tried: restart mac, reset PRAM, unplug/verify and repair disk multiple times for all of the external HDs as well as my Macintosh HD; I have erased the Lacie HD and reformatted it while rebooting from Lion Recovery HD and then TM still failed;  I have also tried deleting from the Library my TM plist as well as my iphoto p.list.  I even tried using a brand new Iomega Minimax HD and TM still failed
I have Lion 10.7.4,   2.66 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 gb RAM
Thanks for any help you can give me!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Just did a system restore from my time machine and I can not find any of my files from my desktop.  How can I find them?

I am a new apple user...sorry it took so long.  I did a recovery from my time machine but I can not find any of the filesI was saving on my desktop.  Are they gone for good or is there some way I can get them back?  I am desperate...should I save my regular used files somewhere else other than my desktop?
Can I get the old desktop files back????

When you open TM you should see all of the desktop items right away.  If they are not there, go back a day before you  made your last retrieval.  (Look for the dates on the time line on the right hand side of the display)
    Ciao.

I have a late 2006 iMac that has just started giving me a message to reboot after a black screen comes down slowly from the top top of the screen to the bottom.  I reloaded software and restored from Time Machine, but it keeps happening, now several tomes a day.  Any insight as to the issue or a proposed solution?

Unplug any peripherals you have except your keyboard, reboot, and check activity monitor for apps.  Keep running apps to a minimum to find the App causing the issue.

  • Restored Time Machine Backup, now can't find files

So, after a wipe of my computer and a reinstall of Snow Leopard, I encountered a couple problems restoring my data.
    1) Migration Assistant wouldn't find my user in my time machine (which was only used for this computer)
    2) I resorted to the "browse other time machine disks" feature by right clicking the Time Machine icon in the dock. From this I was easily able to find my backup and restore it.
After the files finished copying (approx. 254 gb), I was unable to find them anywhere on the drive. Finder and Disk Utility both told me that there was 254 gigs being used (that wasn't being used before, this is a clean snow Leopard install), I just can't find them anywhere.
I went to disk utility do verify permissions, it looks like there was some problems, so I repaired them, still no luck. I also logged in as root to see if I could spot them anywhere, no luck.
Can anybody out there point me in the right direction?
I really would not like to re copy all of those again, as 250 gb over USB 2.0 takes quite a while...

Used these forums a lot for questions since my iMac is my first Apple computer. This is my first post though. My hard drive went bad so I brought it to an authorized Apple service center and had it replaced under AppleCare. My computer is back and ready for action with a newer OS (had OSX 10.5.7 I believe and now have 10.6.3).
Do you mean they installed Snow Leopard, and didn't give you a Snow Leopard disc? If so, that's a violation of the license, but worse, it means you can't do some things you may need to do, including a full system restore of a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup. Either make them put Leopard back on it, or buy a retail Snow Leopard disc ($29).
They also installed iLife '09 and I believe I actually had '08 on there.
    That's also not good.
I did exactly what happened above - tried restoring from my Time Machine backup and ended up using 320GB that I now can't find. When I try to restore individual files I get the message that a file with the same name already exists. Is it possible to restore my files but KEEP this later version of OSX and iLife?
    No.
If I do the "Restore From Backup" the way I'm supposed to (as outlined in #14 Time Machine FAQ), will I erase the newer versions of iLife and OSX?
    Yes.
How can I get these files back
You can't, and shouldn't, without the necessary discs. Those versions of iLife probably won't work on Leopard anyway.
free up the 320GB that is now tied up
The full restore will do that. The first thing it does, after your final confirmation, is to erase the internal HD. Then it copies everything from your backups.
    and keep iLife '09?
    No.

  • Photos deleted a ton of photos (several events/categories/albums in iPhoto). I have backups on Time Machine but I can't go back further than the date I installed Photos, even though backups are there. Anyone have any ideas?

I have been looking forward to an improvement to iPhoto but have found Photos to be worse than useless, unfortunately. It uses all my resources, crashes and freezes constantly. Not only that, the events/albums/categories I have spent countless hours sorting have been completely eliminated. Without this, the app is of no use to me. So, fine, I'll revert to iPhoto, but a ton of my photos are now missing. It shouldn't be a big deal, because I use Time Machine regularly, but Time Machine won't let me restore any time past the date I installed the OS update (the backups are there). Any suggestions?

Your Time Machine backup lets you go back to directly the moment after you upgraded to MacOS X 10.10.3?  There must have been some interval between the upgrade and the first launch of Photos.
Try, if you can see the original iPhoto Library in the first backup.  Directly after the migration it will have a filename extension ".migratedphotolibrary", but this library should still work with iPhoto, nothing changed but the extension.

Have made back up, but unfortunately a little too late. What to do?
MacBook Pro 15 "late 2008, Processor 2.53 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB, Software Mac OS X 10.7.4 Lion (11E53).

    1. You did not get an error message telling you that your iPhoto library was getting full. You got a message telling you that your HD was getting full, right?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
Your Library has been damaged from being run on an overfull disk.
How much free space on it now?

Leopard.  Did a full restore from Time Machine.  Now I can't access my other internal and external drives.  I get the following error: The folder “Capture Video” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.  I have repaired permissions pn the main harddrive.  When I try too click on a disk I get the previously stated error.  I can't even open up information to see what permission/access there is.  It simply will not let me see the content.  It shows the content of my main hard drive when I have clicked the other harddrive's name.

    Solved:
sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"

    Use Migration Assistant http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413
If you previousley backed up from OS X Lion you won't be able to restore to a Snow Leopard partition

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

  • I manually deleted back-ups from Time Machine and now I can't empty the trash

I manually deleted back-ups from Time Machine and now I can't empty the trash.

Using Finder (deleting Time Machine backups) to manage Time Machine files is a mistake. The remedy is somewhat easy, but you will lose all the files on that TM drive.
If there is nothing elese on the Time Machine drive, try reformatting the drive with Disk Utility. This will effectively remove the files from that drive from the trash. If you have files on this drive, temporarily copy the files to another drive, then reformat the TM drive.

  • Can I use any external hard drive with Time Machine?

I have a 1TB external hard drive and also a 16GB flash drive. Is it possible to use either of these with Time Machine?

IMO Time Machine should be on its own Dedicated External Drive... one that is twice the size of the drive that it is backing up... the 16 GB Flash Drive is not appropiate for the task.
