Time Machine fails post 10.10.3 update

I updated to 10.10.3, and have had repeated Time Machine fails since this occurred.  Time Machine suggests I run Disk Utility and repair the disk.  I did this, and found no problems (with both Verify Disk and Repair Disk options).
From the Console app, I can filter for "backupd" messages, and get the following related to one of the failed backup sessions:
4/12/15 11:30:00.006 AM com.apple.backupd-helper[69]: Attempt to use XPC with a MachService that has HideUntilCheckIn set. This will result in unpredictable behavior: com.apple.backupd.status.xpc

This seems to imply it something related to the GOPRO0169.MP4 file.
Any idea how to get around this problem?  The GOPRO0169.MP4 file seems to be fine, and readable.

Start with A4 in the 1st linked article.

  • Why does Time Machine fail to restore and keep the original file after I have provided my Admin password?

I'm attempting to recover a group of lost files from Time Machine. The files are backups from a mobile app within User/LibraryMobile Documents/.
I'm able to find the lost files, but Time Machine failed to restore them after I select 'Keep Both' and then enter my Admin Password. The screen returns to the desktop and the finder window for the file I'm trying to recover, but nothing else happens.
    I hope someone can help.

  • Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

  • Time machine fails on new iMac

I upgraded to a new 21.5" iMac from a g5 iMac.  I transferred my files and have two external hard drives one with photos and one for time
(all worked great on the g5). Main programs in use on the g5 is lightroom and iTunes for the iPhone and iPad.    I have been unable to get time machine to work with my files installed. Both the iMac and backup drive have been replaced with no results. When ihave a clean system with my files I have been able to use time machine for two days before it failed at best.
Every time time machine fails my system starts to act strange and I am forced to do a wipe and reinstall. Have done a complete wipe and install on the iMac and reformatted the new external drive (have left the photo drive off as I got a failure with out that drive connected).  I have not installed any of my files and so far time machine works.  I suspect some sort of corrupt file. Any suggestions on the next steps? I plan an waiting a few more days on the backups just to be sure they work without my files or programs installed.

    Wire fox terrier wrote:
Is there any software that can detect corrupt files? Disk utilities says all drives are fine.
    Not really.
Disk Utility (and other similar apps) check the File System on the disk (the various directories, catalogs, etc., for completeness and consistency, not the internal layout of each file.
Since different kinds of files have different data layouts, and no central registry of the rules,  there's no realistic way to check all the possibilities.
Unlike most backup apps, Time Machine does index them, however, and in the process sometimes finds problems.  If there's a serious problem, it normally sends a message naming the file, then fails, so you can exclude the file from being backed-up, fix it, or delete it.
Considering the symptoms you're seeing, it's likely either an intermittent hardware problem, or something you dragged from your G5 was already damaged, or damaged in the process, or came from a different OS (like Windoze) and didn't get translated properly.   Since you get no messages, it's going to be very tedious to narrow it down.
    From your previous post:
Both a capture program from apple tech and send to apple via about this Mac (system profiler) would not work.
Do you mean they wouldn't run properly, or you sent them to Apple and they either haven't responded or said they couldn't find anything?

Back up to time machine failed.  Error, "Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only". Back up has been working.  drive is not read only.  How do I fix this?

    Hello,

  • Time Machine Fails when VPN is Active

Running Cisco VPN that allows local access to my 192.168 network with no problem for other applications. However, Time Machine fails to find my local NAS drive when the VPN is active. The NAS and MBP are on the same subnet. Any thoughts or reasons why this is occurring and how to resolve the issue?
    Thanks.

If you're using the Cisco client built-in to OSX, be sure that "Send all traffic over VPN" is disabled. With the client from Cisco, I think the checkbox is called something like "Allow local LAN access." Be sure that that is enabled.
Note that this setting can be overridden by the VPN administrator, and often is. (Usually for security or company policy reasons.) So do not be surprised if the checkboxes have no effect for you. If that is the case, then you'll have to speak to the VPN administrator to see if they'll make an exception.

  • Time Machine fails repeatedly with no problem detected on the external disk

Since a couple of days, Time Machine fails repeatedly, several times a day. I repair the disk with the Disk utility, that finds no error, then I reset Time Machine as indicated, and after one or two successful backups, it fails again, with the following report given by the Time Machine Buddy widget:
    Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Copies de sauvegarde Time machine/Backups.backupdb
Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.ModelID path:/Volumes/Copies de sauvegarde Time machine/Backups.backupdb/iMac de MM size:8

Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.ModelID path:/Volumes/Copies de sauvegarde Time machine/Backups.backupdb/iMac de MM size:8
    Backup failed with error: 2
I insist, the disk utility doesn't find any problem in the external USB disk. Should I reinstall the OS?
Thanks a lot for any help!
    Best regards

What Brand/Model External drive is this?

  • Time Machine fails with drive connected to Airport Extreme

First of all, I've had myriad problems with Time Machine, even when it was connected directly to my MBP. But after the recent updates, I installed them and hoped it would work wirelessly. I re-formatted my 120GB OWC drive (my MBP has 30GB available of 120GB). I have already been down the road of making sure I've formatted the drive correctly.
I excluded my system folder, my entourage identity, downloads, and my Parallels Windows XP file from the backup. I connected the drive to my Airport Extreme (not the gigabit version) and started the backup. Basically, it gets about 5 GB into the backup, moving very slowly, and then fails, saying that it couldn't locate the drive. And that part is true--I can't seem to locate the drive on my network anymore either. And eventually, after another hour or so, my Airport Extreme drops as well, and isn't even available. Even when I unplug the AE, and plug it back in, it still doesn't show up...but after about an hour or so...it pops back up and is available, working fine. My iPhone sees the same problem with AE dropping and then coming back. When the wireless service drops, I can plug an ethernet cable into the AE and I can access the internet fine, so it's not the cable modem (Time Warner).
Is anyone else seeing this problem? I'm no guru and appreciate that Macs just seem to work correctly. But Time Machine is making me pull my hair out. It's been an unmitigated disaster from start to finish.
    Appreciate any help!

This is probably the most sensible post I've read on the issue. I've spent the last 2 days trying to get my 500GB LaCie Quadra hard drive to work with my Airport Extreme (the square one, yes .
I've formatted it correctly with the Disk Utility (multiple times!).
Airport Utility sees it just fine. I can back up to it when it is connected directly to my MacBook via USB.
But when the drive is connected via USB to the Airport Extreme, Time Machine doesn't see it -- unless I turn on file sharing with guest access read and write. That seems less-than-secure to me even if my network is protected.
Without guest access the drive appears in the shared section of the Finder, but I can't connect to it. I've tried all three combinations under "Secure Shared Disks" but none of them work.
Seems like its just too flaky to use an external disk connected to the Airport Extreme.
Happy to be pointed in the right direction... are there specific file permissions I should be setting my external drive to?
    Thanks,
    Rich

I am backing up to a brand new - well bought in February, '14 - 1TB external hard drive and there is NOTHING else in there except the TM backups.
For the past two weeks it's been failing the automatic backups.
There is PLENTY of room on the drive.
    The exact error message reads:
    "Time Machine Error
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder
Latest successful backup: [time and day entered here]"
To remedy this at first it was as easy as un-mounting the drive and then plugging it back in and it was fine.
Now I've got the disk utility open and constantly repairing the drive and this is only a temporary solution.
Below is a small sample of the report from the utility each one is dated.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this without having to purchase a new drive?
In February the old external drive I had started to freak TM out and it just erased ALL my backups which I desperately needed due to the same error / failure. That drive had plenty of space as well but I lost all my stuff anyway.
I searched the forums for a solution and found nothing helpful.
I know the TM isn't for archiving and another question I have is, How can I transfer or even rename the backup folder that TM makes and move it to a 'free drive' to prevent overwriting? Right now I just keep buying new drives which is ridiculous.

OK well Time Machine backed up a little bit within the last hour since I posted the above. As I'm sitting here working the backup stops and I get this stupid error again:
So as usual, I go to eject it and I get this ridiculous message. I have no idea what could be 'using' this disk! It's not attached to any programs.
It's got one folder of images and pdf files and the time machine backup on it.
So I force eject it and plug it back in. But if I drop down the little circle at the top task bar for the backup info, It says it backed up successfully at 3:20.
GAH! What the *&^% is wrong with this infernal machine?

  • Time Machine EHD won't mount after update to  10.6.7

I recently upgraded to OS X 10.6.7. Yesterday, my Time Machine backup failed and the LaCie EHD that I use for my backups won't mount anymore. My husband was able to see the EHD on his PC, so I don't think it's a problem with the drive. I suspect that it has to do with the OS update. Any suggestions?

If you have a desktop computer: Unplug it from the outlet and anything plugged into the firewire/usb ports, leave it that way for 45 seconds minimum check it again and see if it mounts in disk utility
If you have a laptop do one of these two steps and post back if it mounts:
Removable battery: Remove battery, disconnect charger(power adapter), hold down power button for 5 seconds, put back in battery should resolve
Embedded (non removable) battery: plug in the power adapter/charger, turn off computer, hold down on the LEFT side of the keyboard Shift-Control-Option. While your holding all of these press the power button once, let go of just the power button. Two seconds or so later let go of the rest of the buttons, you'll know this step was successful if it didn't turn on.
If it doesn't or does show up also post back your answer to this:
Click on the Apple icon in the top left hand corner, click on About This Mac, click on More Info. Then Click on Firewire or USB (Depending what type of connection your EXHD has) if you see it in the right it's a recognized device, just not mounting, give me a heads up whether you do or don't see it there.

  • Another Time Machine problem after 10.5.3 update

OK, I have another problem, that I haven't seen listed here. Time Machine will no longer back up my MacBook Pro after the 10.5.3 update. The error message I get in the Console log is:
6/1/08 3:44:42 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1395] Volume at path /Volumes/Dave's backup does not appear to be the correct backup volume for this computer. (Cookies do not match)
How do I change the cookies for my backup disk?
    Thanks in advance.

I believe I have isolated the problem as a permissions issue which I have logged as bug 5990628:
    Summary:
Unable to backup over network after upgrading to 10.5.3.
    Steps to Reproduce:
Configure Time Machine to back up Leopard machine over AirPort to another Leopard machine (with external drive and .Mac account configured in this case)
    Expected Results:
    Backups complete as usual.
    Actual Results:
Backups are 'Delayed' with errors like this in the console:
6/6/08 4:25:57 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[2334] Volume at path /Volumes/Time Machine-1 does not appear to be the correct backup volume for this computer. (Cookies do not match)
    Regression:
    Yes
    Notes:
There are many threads on the subject:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1538633
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1543033
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1547134
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1546079
The problem appears to relate to being unable to read the cookie:
6/6/08 4:20:23 AM System Preferences[2315] Failed to create remote cookie file at path: /Volumes/Time Machine/.001b63abcdef
And this appears to be because the cookie was owned by a different user (likely due to it wanting to connect using a .Mac username instead of a local one), per my explanation below:
I only ever used Time Machine after upgrading to 10.5.3 so my first experience with it has been fairly ordinary, as the backups were constantly being 'Delayed' with this error in the Console:
6/6/08 4:25:57 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[2334] Volume at path /Volumes/Time Machine-1 does not appear to be the correct backup volume for this computer. (Cookies do not match)
The first thing I discovered from a blog post was that my .Mac 60 day trial was causing it to connect using my .mac username (which appeared in the username field in the UI as a string of hex characters); disconnecting and reconnecting using a local user seemed to work but the issue remained.
I then spotted this in the console:
6/6/08 4:20:23 AM System Preferences[2315] Failed to create remote cookie file at path: /Volumes/Time Machine/.001b63abcdef
The 'random' characters are your MAC address and the binary inside is likely this 'cookie' - a random value used to transparently and reliably link backups to machines. Curiously I couldn't modify this file over the network despite apparently owning it (in Terminal):
    $ cd /Volumes/Time\ Machine
    $ ls -la .00*
    -r-------- 1 samj staff 16 Jun 6 04:33 .001b63abcdef
But when looking at it on the Mac Mini 'server' I saw that the owner was in fact another user:
    -r-------- 1 otheruser staff 16 Jun 6 04:33 .001b63abcdef
    So I ran these commands:
    sudo chown samj .001b63abcdef
    sudo chgrp staff .001b63abcdef
And sure enough I was able to configure Time Machine as expected and it is as we speak backing up my MacBook over Airport to a USB drive attached to my Mac Mini.
    Cheers,
    Sam

  • Restoring backup from Time Machine fails.... MacBook stalls at restart

Aften having problems with my MacBook, I've checked and repaired diskpermissions, checked and repaired the disk, formatted the disk, reinstalled Snow, updated it to the newest version, upgrated to Lion and from that point restored from a Time Machine backup.
The restoring goes Well, but When it is done, aften several hours, the Machine restarts. During restart, it comes to the Apple Logo with the dotted wheel underneath and stays there....... For hours......
I've even tried with an older backup..... Same thing.....
    What can be wrong?
    / Martin

You might try booting into "verbose mode" to see if that shows any messages that might explain the problem.
By the way, your problem isn't really one involving a Time Capsule (where you posted your question), but one involving Time Machine, which would normally be covered in one of the sections for versions of OS X.
