Time machine fails to back up...always some kind of error

As I said, the Time Machine attempts the daily back up and always ends up stopping because of some kind of error, Worked perfectly until I installed  OS10.7

It's still trying. I'll post the last few error messages.

    Hello Apple Community!
    I've got a brand new MacBook pro 13" 2.3GHz i5 model. This is my first Mac and I would just like to say I absolutely love them and can never ever see myself going back to Windows ever again
    Well I wanted to set up the TimeMachine, so I bought myself a brand new Hitachi 500GB ext HDD to store my BackUp on (it's a USB one, I've seen that firewire ones are suggested but surely it doesn't make any difference?).
    However it just wont work. Whenever I run the backup, it runs for about 5 mins and then the message
    +*"The backup was not performed because and error occurred while copying files to the backup disk.*+
    +*The problem may be temporary. try again later to back up. If the problem persists use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."*+
    Well this message has appeared on each of about 15 attempts I have tried to get it working.
    Of course I did what the message said and repaired the disk and left TimeMachine to run it's backups automatically. They ran but the error message continued to occur.
    First I thought it might have been because I was running Parallels (there is a warning that appears warning that it may be slower due to backup) so I stopped using that when running it.
    Next I figured it could be the format of the drive? But TimeMachine tells you if the disk is wrong.
    Could be the size of the volume? I had it partitioned ready for media to go on the other half, so I redid the partitions to make the backup one 400GB (plenty big enough, my MacBook's hard drive is only 320GB)
    Still no luck so I removed the partitions completely and reverted the disk to how it was when I purchased it. When I re-setup TimeMachine, it changed the disk format to what it wanted to be (Mac OS X extended (case sensitive, journaled)) - not sure what the difference between each type is, but this was automatically set up. The error occurred again.
    I've tried using a different external harddrive and that didn't work either.
    So I'm thinking there is probably a setting that I've missed out or it's because I'm using the computer while it's running (hopefully this is not the case).
    If I could have any help with this problem that would be excellent.

    Actually, Time Machine does not always tell you if its disk is formatted incorrectly. Open the Disk Utility utility (in the utilities folder, which is in the applications folder) and make sure you initialize your Time Machine disk as Mac OS X extended with the GUID option set in the partition table.
    If that doesn't help, I suggest you take advantage of your free Applecare warranty and call Apple to ask for assistance in this matter.

    Hi I've been using time machine since April on my first external hard-drive (Partitioned so that it had time machine and room for music and photos) now I am trying to make time machine back up to a new external drive and every time it gets so far it crashes my mac please help me with any pointers I tried erasing it and formatting the new drive and making time machine back up to no drive then start backing up to this new drive but it keeps on failing.

    First, make sure the new drive is set up properly. See #C1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
    If it's ok, do a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 there.
    If that doesn't help, verify your internal HD, per #A5 there.
    If it still crashes your Mac, try running this: [Apple Hardware Test: iMac (Mid 2007) and later models|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1883].

  • Verbatim disk drive historically used only for time machine backups. Recently i added some other media files to use some of available space without partitioning, the disc now refuses to mount in finder despite appearing in disk utility. Repair fails. HELP

    Sorry to elaborate a bit more.
    I have used time machine since owning my mac book pro with no issues. i keep the timemachine backups on an external hard drive made by Verbatim. This has not external power source.
    Recently i decided to use up some of the available space on the external verbatim disk drive to store some movie files which were sitting on my macbook pro.
    Therefore i created a new folder outside of the time machine backup folder and stored the movie files in there.
    From then on Time machine failed... and a few days later i noticed it was not mounting in 'finder'
    Therefore i used disk utility to see if it was recognising it. Which i was. However when i try to repair it the repair process fails.
    In disk utility i am presented with 1 TB Samsung HN M10 which has a child called Verbatim HD.
    The 1TB Samsung hardware appears fine, but the verbatim disk i am unable to fully verify and fix.
    Does this mean i have lost all my back ups?
    Have I lost all the media that i put on there?
    Is there any way to fix this?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    To summarize: You used an external Verbatim HD for your TM backups. Then, you stored some movie files on the "spare" space on the Verbatim drive. Now, Disk Utility isn't being recognized, and repair is disabled. Your home Samsung drive is working fine, but the Verbatim cannot be verified.
    The problem, I believe, is that the external Verbatim drive wasn't partitioned. There should be two partitions: one for TM backups, the other for video. That way, you can perform backups, and still retain some space for video or somesuch.
    Frankly, I don't know how to fix this except through the following. (1) Erase the Verbatim drive, (2) Create a new blank space and format it, (3) Make two partitions - one for backup, the other for video. (4) Run TM through one partition, but switch to the other for your videos.  The better solution might be to have one dedicated drive (perhaps the Verbatim) for backups, and another dedicated drive for video backups; that way, you'll have plenty of space for expansion.
    I hope someone will correct me if I'm incorrect, but I believe you've essentially lost your backups and media. I don't know how you can retrieve that clump of the now-undifferentiated data on the Verbatim drive. To retrieve any lost data, you're going to require another external drive that's larger in capacity, as well as data recovery software; don't expect encouraging results. If you're desperate, there are firms like Drive Savers that can offer a more comprehensive solution - at a cost.

    Unfortunately, not much to go on here. There are any of  twenty different reasons why backups are not occurring, and no shortcuts that I know of to find out why.

    Unfortunately, that drive is long gone, probably back to the mfr. Drives are not returned when they are exchanged. You can go by and ask them, but the chances are slim to none.

    After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
    Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
    Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
    The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
    I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
    How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

    If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
    Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
    Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
    Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

    My time machine used to back up to my hard drive fine, but after it had a fault half way through a back up, i think the cable was disconnected it won't back up or start a back up again. I've looked at the help and it actually has my hard drive in the "Don't back up" section, when i select it to remove it from that it won't let me remove it.....
    Really need to back up and no idea how to get this done...

    Open up Disk Utility and Verify your external had drive. It sounds as though there could be some damage from when it was unplugged in the middle of writing, which is preventing Time Machine from working properly.
    Try to get Disk Utility to repair the drive if it finds any errors.
    If this does not work the most likely thing is that the Disk Image being written to by Time Machine is perpetually locked. In that case, it might be worth deleting the back-ups (since they are unusable now anyway) and starting a new time machine backup from scratch.

    so basically my question is... what do i do? is there a way to recover files? do i need to wipe out all data on my TC?

    -TC was good for 2 months.
    ...Recently....
    -I tell TC to backup.
    -It takes FOREVER to "preparing backup..."
    -then a window pops up that says,

    i tried downloading a movie in my TC but it was way too slow downloading so i just cancelled.
    i downloaded another movie to my TC, Pineapple Express, and that worked.. but i couldnt seem to find it in the TC. i always had to open QT and go to recently played and use it from there. sketchy.

    These suggestions have worked for others...
    *_"The Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Mounted"_*
    First, it is important to distinguish this error message from another, similar Time Machine error that states “The backup volume could not be mounted”. This is important as the causes and cures for these two errors can be very different.
    Consider each topic below separately. When one option does not resolve your issue, then move on the next one.
    *Unmount the Backup Disk Image* (TC)
    If, for some reason, you have manually mounted the Time Machine backup disk image (sparsebundle), or Time Machine failed to eject it after the previous backup, subsequent backups may fail. (Console - “Failed to mount disk image”… “Backup failed with error: 21”)
    Eject the backup disk image (white drive icon) by either clicking the little Eject icon to the right of the disk image in the Finders’ Sidebar, or Ctrl-Click the drive icon on the desktop and select “Eject” from the contextual menu. Now try backing up again or launching Time Machine to view previous backups.
    *“Disconnect All Users…”:* #
    If your Time Machine backup drive (“Backup of Users Computer”) is mounted on your desktop or in the Sidebar of the Finder window. then Time Machine may think the drive is already in use. Alternatively, if the Time Capsule hard disk has been recently accessed by a Windows machine, it may not have fully relinquished control. Do the following:
    Open Airport Utility and select the Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
    Select “Disks” at top of window.
    Click “Disconnect All Users…” at bottom of window.
    Close the Airport Utility.
    Now try Backing up again.
    One poster reported: “I got it resolved. Apparently it had to do with one of the files being open on the disk from the drive. I had browsed the disk with one of my windows boxes here and it must have left one of the folders "open". Anyway, I rebooted the TC and we are good to go now.”
    *Proper Computer Name* #
    Make sure your computer has a proper name. Go to System Preferences --> Sharing. Time Machine needs to differentiate your computer from others on your network (i.e. "Bills MacBook" or "Office iMac"). If the "Computer Name" field is blank, create a name. Realize that if this step is necessary, you will likely have to start the Time Machine backup process over again and do another full initial backup.
    According to this article, [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1760], Time Machine may experience problems if your computer name includes certain characters. Make sure the computer name only includes ASCII characters from the following set.
    (0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)
    Once a change in the computer name occurs, you should stop and restart Sharing on the affected computer. Uncheck and then recheck Sharing in the Services list on the left.
    Also, try removing the apostrophe from the disk images name (sparsebundle).
