Time machine fails to connect to Wi-Fi and Ethernet, runs very warm,

I have the 2TB Time Capsule, working fine for about a year, backinup two MacBook's - one 750 GB, the other 500GB, and just suddently started running very warm.  Which happened to my original 2007 Time Capsule BEFORE IT FAILED.  Other warning signs include: Wi-Fi just stops working after a Time Capsule back up - the network it creates to my iOS devices and 2nd computer (wireless, not ethernet) can all talk to the main CPU, just went down.
Tonight it happened again.  One MBP is running 10.7.5, the other 10.8.2, and the firmware is all up to date (I think its the Time Capsule 2TB 2011 for $299, when the 3TB was $499 - some quality difference not advertised?  I hope it's not a pair or quad of cheap ATA drives with a bridge chip).  But given it does NAT routing, Wi-Fi 802.11(n), and multiple backups automatically, it's a very convenient device.  But therein lies the problem: if it fails, all functions fail.  And tonight was Wi-Fi AND Ethernet.  My ISP was OK, no outages and account paid up.   A simple power boot restored the Time Capsule to "working", but it's still HOT.
Anybody else having heat issues, accompanied by failing Wi-Fi, and potentially internet?  This feels like the path to eventualy degradation and failure.
Thank you for input and suggestions.  I'll be contacting Apple Support soon.

A Gen4 TC should not run too hot.. yes, when backing up with the disk running for extended periods then they do run pretty hot.. but once the disk spins down they should cool off..
Is the disk spinning down?? Stick your hand on it and feel... stick your ear over the fan area.. right behind the power socket and listen if the fan is running.. on a gen4 it should.
Raise the TC on pencils or chop sticks or erasers or bottle tops.. make sure it doesn't sit on the bench.
If you are running the latest firmware.. go back. In fact on a 12month old TC you might be able to go back to 7.5.2 firmware. (hold the option key when you select firmware updates, to show all possible updates and downgrades.)
The latest firmware offers nothing but trouble.. for the vast majority of people.
Do you still have AppleCare on a computer.. that will cover your TC as well. Take it back to Apple if you are worried..
There is no difference whatsoever between the two model TC except the size of the drive.

In making an attempt to copy my files to a different external hard drive, I ran into several issues with document files that were "read-only" so the copying stops. (they were just a couple of pdfs and photos). I deleted all of those files. I then ran back up again after verifying the external I have designated for Time Machine. (Ive also completely erased, repaired and verified this drive several times over the past few weeks) Backup failed, again.
I feel like my next move is to start deleting the "files" that are causing the errors listed above in TM Buddy (they are mostly photos in iphoto)... but then I realized that some of those errors are associated with the backing up of my iphone.
Just now, I pasted a portion of my system log into Textedit, and the application just hanged... for 2 hours. I finally force quit it.

Hi!  I did exactly as you said. I was able to backup with my home folder excluded, but was not able to do so after I removed the exclusion. It crapped out 5G before finishing.

  • Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

  • Time machine failing , running extremely slow

Working on a faculty member's MacBook (I'm an IT person at a college) (Macbook 5,1, 2.0 GH core2 duo, aluminum unibody). Her problem is that Time machine is continually failing , and has done so 'for about two weeks'.

Both the Mac and Time Machine drives check out with Disk Utility, and swapping in another disk to try a new Time Machine backup was similarly very slow (about 4 hours to copy ~ 7 Gigs) although it did not fail entirely.
I reformatted the new drive and used Carbon Copy Cloner to back up her system; a complete backup with CCC took just over an hour (~130 gb) and no errors were reported.
The same USB port was used throughout, and the drives were directly connected to the Mac and have their own power supply.
Previously Time Machine was working just fine.
Any ideas? Just set the thing up with a newly formatted drive and let it run the 10 days it's claiming to need??

Spotlight does index the volumes as files are added to them. I'd imagine you can add the Time Machine volume to the spotlight "Privacy" list to prevent it from being indexed, if you're hoping that will speed things up a bit. The Time Machine backups, especially the initial one, can take a while.

  • Time machine fails on new iMac

I upgraded to a new 21.5" iMac from a g5 iMac.  I transferred my files and have two external hard drives one with photos and one for time
(all worked great on the g5). Main programs in use on the g5 is lightroom and iTunes for the iPhone and iPad.    I have been unable to get time machine to work with my files installed. Both the iMac and backup drive have been replaced with no results. When ihave a clean system with my files I have been able to use time machine for two days before it failed at best.
Every time time machine fails my system starts to act strange and I am forced to do a wipe and reinstall. Have done a complete wipe and install on the iMac and reformatted the new external drive (have left the photo drive off as I got a failure with out that drive connected).  I have not installed any of my files and so far time machine works.  I suspect some sort of corrupt file. Any suggestions on the next steps? I plan an waiting a few more days on the backups just to be sure they work without my files or programs installed.

Is there any software that can detect corrupt files? Disk utilities says all drives are fine.
    Not really.
Disk Utility (and other similar apps) check the File System on the disk (the various directories, catalogs, etc., for completeness and consistency, not the internal layout of each file.
Since different kinds of files have different data layouts, and no central registry of the rules,  there's no realistic way to check all the possibilities.
Unlike most backup apps, Time Machine does index them, however, and in the process sometimes finds problems.  If there's a serious problem, it normally sends a message naming the file, then fails, so you can exclude the file from being backed-up, fix it, or delete it.
Considering the symptoms you're seeing, it's likely either an intermittent hardware problem, or something you dragged from your G5 was already damaged, or damaged in the process, or came from a different OS (like Windoze) and didn't get translated properly.   Since you get no messages, it's going to be very tedious to narrow it down.
    From your previous post:
Both a capture program from apple tech and send to apple via about this Mac (system profiler) would not work.
Do you mean they wouldn't run properly, or you sent them to Apple and they either haven't responded or said they couldn't find anything?

  • Why does Time Machine fail to restore and keep the original file after I have provided my Admin password?

I'm attempting to recover a group of lost files from Time Machine. The files are backups from a mobile app within User/LibraryMobile Documents/.
I'm able to find the lost files, but Time Machine failed to restore them after I select 'Keep Both' and then enter my Admin Password. The screen returns to the desktop and the finder window for the file I'm trying to recover, but nothing else happens.
    I hope someone can help.

How can I force Time Machine to make a complete backup of my Hard Drive.  I just installed a new external drive for Backup since my previous one failed.  Now when I back up, Time Machine only backs up my data folder and the Users folder.
When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

Hi I'd like to jump in here. Your app showed me this:
    Time Machine:
              Skip System Files: NO
              Mobile backups: OFF
              Auto backup: YES
              Volumes being backed up:
Macintosh HD: Disk size: 749.3 GB Disk used: 453.81 GB
              Destinations:
                        Plastic Wrapper [Local] (Last used)
                        Total size: 999.86 GB
                        Total number of backups: 64
                        Oldest backup: 2013-07-24 23:25:11 +0000
                        Last backup: 2013-11-17 01:40:47 +0000
Size of backup disk: Too small
                                  Backup size 999.86 GB < (Disk used 453.81 GB X 3)
Time Machine details may not be accurate.
All volumes being backed up may not be listed.
              /sbin excluded from backup!
              /usr excluded from backup!
              /System excluded from backup!
              /bin excluded from backup!
              /private excluded from backup!
              /Library excluded from backup!
              /Applications excluded from backup!
Aside from the size of my backup drive, which I will increase at some point, I'd really like to have time machine backing up all system folders, especially Applications. How to I reset this hidden exclusions?
    Thanks,
    Darcy

  • I upgraded to Maverick and now Time Machine will not connect to the external hard drive to back up files.  The external hard drive is a Western Digital "My Book Live" 2 TB.  How do I solve problem?

I upgraded to Maverick and now Time Machine will not connect to the external hard drive to back up files.  The external hard drive is a Western Digital "My Book Live" 2 TB.  How do I solve problem?

I also had problem accessing my WD MyBookLive after upgrading to Maverick.
To resolve the problem, I used  Connect To Server (Cmd K) to specify the IP address.
Then I enter a user id and password I created in the MyBookLive.
You can also verify that you have admin access to the MyBookLive using Safari or Chrome.
Just enter the MyBookLive IP address as the URL.

This issue has been in discussion (actively) since last August here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4218970?start=0&tstart=0
After months and months of new reports, it's pretty clear that this is an Apple Mountain Lion problem and one that Apple needs to address.  As one frsutrated user noted :
    >>There is no consistent solution for a user.  Apple has to supply it.  All you can do is submit a bug report to

Please, if you are encountering this problem you will save yourself a lot of wasted time and energey simple by joining me and others in asking Apple to fix this problem: Make a bug report.

  • Time Machine can't connect/use shared network volume

    Hi All,
I have a Mobius2 external USB hard drive connected to my iMac (10.9.5). It has two partitions (Disk Utility 13 does not seem to allow more that 2 partitions now), one partition is for Time Machine backups of my iMac. The 2nd partition (as required by Time Machine is a shared AFP volume). I want to backup my MacBook (10.9.5) but I can't get Time Machine to use the partition I set up for it on the Mobius2. Even though I have the volume (named "Mobius RAID 2") mounted on my MacBook desktop, and I added it to Time Machine (entering both the password to connect to the iMac the Mobius is connected to and the password to encrypt the backup with) I still keep getting the error below!
"Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Jeffrey’s iMac”.
The network backup disk could not be accessed because there was a problem with the network username or password. You may need to re-select the backup disk and enter the correct username and password."
I have removed the shared volume several times from Time Machine and added it back....still get the same error above, even when the volume is already mounted to my MacBooks desktop! I don't know what else to try. I used to Keychain to verify the log in password is correct and it is.
....I can even copy files to the (2nd) partition on the Mobius2 (connected to my iMac) when the volume is mounted on the MacBooks desktop.
So I don't know why Time Machine keeps saying the "networked backup disk couldn't be accessed". Can anyone help? (see attached screen shots)

    Hi Eric,
I was able to change the permissions for "everyone" on the iMac for the connected USB drive partition. But not on the MacBook when this partition is mounted on the MacBook desktop. I get this error saying I don't have the necessary permission to change it from "No Access" to "Read & Write":
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/aq3zme6ew7oatgg/MobiusTMbackup6.tiff?dl=0
I don't even understand why it says "No Access" for "everyone" when I gave "everyone" Read & Write privileges on the iMac for this drive/partition!
You said "Apple officially only supports Time Capsules as NAS backups." but on the page you sent me it says:
"You can use Time Machine with a Time Capsule, and with USB, FireWire, and Thunderbolt disks. The backup disk can be directly connected to your computer or be on a network. If the backup disk has been divided into partitions, you can use one of the partitions."
....."directly connected to your computer or be on a network" = NAS?  If that's what it means Apple needs to be more clear, as my USB drive and its' partitions ARE on a my network, and I can put files on them and access them across my network.
I am trying to get a 2nd network Time Machine backup going as the Time Machine backup of my MacBook became corrupted and I could not restore my mail, even though my mail files were in there, I could restore files but I could not access my mail directory no matter what I tried, Apple has some kind of lock on it now and hides it. I had to resort to my BackBlaze backup to restore my mail, luckily BackBlaze does not hide the mail directory.
So it seems I have a $3000 iMac with a RAID 1 drive (with two brand new 4TB HGST drives) connected to it (that I bought just to improve my backups) and Time Machine and the vaunted "OS X" ("the world’s most advanced desktop operating system") can't handle it. Great.
But I do appreciate your help Eric...
    Come on Apple, FIX THIS.

  • Time Machine won't connect over WiFi

I'm running 10.7.4 on my MacBook Pro.  I have an airport extreme that I have a Western Digital 2Gb network drive connected to.  I performed a full backup over the network and have had subsuquent backups work fine.  Recently I have been getting the following message and I can't get Time Machine to backup any changes I have on my computer.  "The backup disk image “/Volumes/TimeMachine/dave (2).sparsebundle” is already in use."  If I reboot the computer and the drive, I still can't get it to backup.  I am able to access the drive by selecting connect to server in the GO menu, but the Time Machine won't connect.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

    See C17
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But your doing something that is not supported and frankly many people find does exactly what you experience... it works well for a while and then just won't work.. you can verify the disk.. see A5 in the same post as listed. You probably need to wipe it and start again.. but this will keep happening.. The AEBS is not suitable for this task.

  • Time Machine Fail

    Great. Here we go again.
The box in quesiton is a newish (August '11) Mac Mini "Server" that shipped with Lion and has been through several mandatory rebuilds because of unrelated Apple-caused FAILS. It is running the latest 10.7.3 Lion Server with all software and hardware updates applied except for the firmware update that came out last week. The backup drive is a firewire CalDigit RAID with up-to-date firmware which has been verified as working (by valid TM client backups).
This morning on my computer I noticed that my Time Machine backup is "delayed". I know server-based TM can get wiggy sometimes since, like any other Lion "Server" service, it will randomly do whatever it feels like. I opened TM preferences and re-selected the disk on the TM server from the list, re-entered my server credentials, but got the error "Time Machine can't access the backup disk 'Backups'." At this point I logged into the server...
In the Server.app I found the Time Machine service was "OFF". So I turned it "ON". It spun for an eternity then went back to "OFF".
There's an error in the system log which in typical Apple fashion simply states: "<datetime> <servername> Server[452]: Error starting TIme Machine service".
That's it. There is no detail at all, and of course... THERE ARE NO TIME MACHINE LOGS.
I've searched Google and found no results on Lion and 452 errors (except for totally unrelated mail sending issues), and I was unable to find any existing threads in Apple Discussions on the matter either.
The server's own TM (client) is running fine and backs up to the same physical drive (array). But no one else on the network can back up because the TM (service) will not start.
So far, 3 of the whopping 4 troubleshooting options Apple provides have failed:
Turn TM off, then on again
Turn TM off, select a different drive, wait for the save, select the correct drive, wait for the save, turn TM on
Turn TM off, eject the drive, reinsert the drive, select the drive again, turn TM on
With the above failing, and NO LOGS, the only thing I can think of is to reboot -- that will have to wait until the users leave.
Any other (non-violent) troubleshooting options you can think of, or better yet, anyone experienced and fixed this issue?
    Thanks in advance.

A re-boot of the "server" cleared it up.
RE-DICULOUS. A server should not need to be rebooted every 2 weeks!

  • Time Machine Fails when VPN is Active

Running Cisco VPN that allows local access to my 192.168 network with no problem for other applications. However, Time Machine fails to find my local NAS drive when the VPN is active. The NAS and MBP are on the same subnet. Any thoughts or reasons why this is occurring and how to resolve the issue?
    Thanks.

If you're using the Cisco client built-in to OSX, be sure that "Send all traffic over VPN" is disabled. With the client from Cisco, I think the checkbox is called something like "Allow local LAN access." Be sure that that is enabled.
Note that this setting can be overridden by the VPN administrator, and often is. (Usually for security or company policy reasons.) So do not be surprised if the checkboxes have no effect for you. If that is the case, then you'll have to speak to the VPN administrator to see if they'll make an exception.
