Time Machine Fails When Trying to Backup Certain Files

Time Machine is having problems with some files I have copied from a Windows computer. I am a web developer and I moved my client files from a Windows PC to my iMac. Most of the files backup properly but some don't. When Time Machine tries to backup those files, it fails.
I downloaded Time Machine Buddy and it has helped me identify files that can't be backed up. However, the only solution that works is to delete the files. *Since these are client files, that is not an acceptable solution.*
When I look at "Get Info", there are several listings for admin, system, staff, owner, and everyone. Each list shows the permissions to be "Custom." I have changed some to "Read and Write" and I have changed all of them to "Read and Write." Neither of these have fixed the problem. Time Machine still fails on the same files.
I really need some smart Mac person to tell me what I can do to fix this problem. Thanks.

Correct, at no time did I say that this was for everyone, it is in fact for anyone who wishes to spend his time working rather than restoring.
For most folks, a hard drive failure is not exactly common. If they are to you, something is seriously wrong.
Replacing a drive in a unibody MBP is a 5 minute operation! & they are cheap!
Yes, for those who are mechanically inclined and not afraid to open up a Mac. What percentage of users do you suppose that is?
As to your second point, I suggested specifically using a TM type backup in addition to the clone, I stated that my choice is a realtime service that stores my files (a) as files that I can access from anywhere (b) with versions (including deletions) going back as far as my storage limits allow.
And how would you use that to roll back to a previous version of your entire system?
I don't want to have to deal with TM permissions/user/network/extreme/forgetting to delete till it gets full blahblahblah
Huh? Now you're adding all sorts of other things.
Permissions? A user account is a user account, and Time Machine maintains the permissions.
Network? Your clone is on a network? How do you boot up from that?
Extreme? You use an Airport Extreme for your network clone?
Forgetting to delete until it's full? Yes, that's exactly what you mentioned above: "versions (including deletions) going back as far as my storage limits allow."
PleasePondini, do it your way and I'll do it mine
Obviously.

  • Time Machine fails when trying to backup user folder

When I try to backup my OSX 10.6.7 MB Pro to either an USB-attached external disk or a time capsule the backup fails shortly after the scan run, leaving me with the message "The backup was not performed because an error occured while copying files to the backup disk." The scan run is taking quite some time (more than 300'000 objects),,
Only if I exclude my own user folder (respectively the ~) from backup the timemachine backup runs smoothly, but of course without my user data.
The MB has an SSD with 250 GB capacity of which 188 GB are used.
If you can assist in any way, many thanks to you!
    Kind regards

See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.   It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.    If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup, what you've done, and the results.

  • Time Machine fails when trying to backup

I have a macbook running 10.5.8.  I am trying to use time machine with my iomega external hard drive but I keep getting an error that the backup failed.  I have been successful with backups in the past with this same hard drive.  Any ideas what's going on

unfortunately there is no fix for this and there never will be
unless you sell both boxes and get a Time Capsule
in the meantime you need to mount the drive you are backing up to
select it as your backup drive in time machine then unmount it (drag to trash can)
and let time machine mount it
of course once it's mounted your next scheduled backup will also fail
so unmount it every time or turn off time machine and do backups every once in while

  • Time Machine stalls when trying to back up to Time Capsule or an external hard drive.

TIme Machine stalls when trying to back up to Time Capsule or an external hard drive.  Time Machine shows a message such as "Backing up 4MB of 9.00GB" but nothing happens for hours.

Are you really running 10.6.4 OS?
What model TC and what firmware?
    Wireless or wired?
    How is the TC setup?
If TM can work to neither a TC or external hard disk it is more likely the computer is faulty hard disk..
Do a verify of the disk.

  • Time Machine Fails when VPN is Active

Running Cisco VPN that allows local access to my 192.168 network with no problem for other applications. However, Time Machine fails to find my local NAS drive when the VPN is active. The NAS and MBP are on the same subnet. Any thoughts or reasons why this is occurring and how to resolve the issue?
    Thanks.

If you're using the Cisco client built-in to OSX, be sure that "Send all traffic over VPN" is disabled. With the client from Cisco, I think the checkbox is called something like "Allow local LAN access." Be sure that that is enabled.
Note that this setting can be overridden by the VPN administrator, and often is. (Usually for security or company policy reasons.) So do not be surprised if the checkboxes have no effect for you. If that is the case, then you'll have to speak to the VPN administrator to see if they'll make an exception.

  • "application cannot be found" when trying to open certain files

Recently i upgraded my computer to Mavericks recently and I've been having a problem opening certain files.  In one day I upgraded to Mavericks and I also updated my Adobe programs to the Creative Cloud.  Ever since then I cannot open any of my Adobe files.  They are all saved as under the CS4 legacy format.  I uninstalled CS4 after installing the Creative Cloud.  Every time I try to open one of these files previously created in CS4, whether it is a photoshop ot illustrator file, I get the error message "The application cannot be found".  I also can see no preview or thumbnails for the files.  I talked to Adobe Support and we went through a process of deleting my preferences and it didn't work.  I restarted my machine and it worked.  It worked for a day and now after starting up my machine today it is saying the same thing again.  After a while it just out of nowhere started working again.  I'll be clear and say that I was logged into my adobe account and there were no network interuptions.
By the way, the new versions (Creative Cloud) of the adobe programs all work just fine and If I save something then it works fine.  It is only when trying to read a file from a previous format.

If you are attempting to start Adobe Creative Cloud by opening a file created by its previous version, open the Adobe Creative Cloud app first, then choose Open from its File menu and select the old file. The files you are attempting to open were associated with the version you used to create them, which is now gone.
After opening them, save them again. From then on, opening them will probably open Adobe CC directly.

  • Time Machine fails intermittently to start backup

I am running MBPro Retina laptop with Mountain Lion 10.8.4, with all current updates (except for the new v. 6.3 for Airport Utility, which does not work right on my machine and many others). I am using a relatively new 2GB Time Capsule for backup via a wireless connection. The connection appears to be stable (as indicated by the console log) and I do not think that issue is relevant here. I backup has been working very well for many months but started to act up several weeks ago with a intermittent error (see below).
I get a successful backup about 1 out  3 times, so the situation is annoying  but not fully critical. I include below a listing from the console showing the relevant part of the log for a failed initation of the backup (personal information is redacted with XXXX). I have searched out error messges for the DiskMountedNotifier and have little to help isolate the problem.  Can someone help point me in the right direction??

The error message I had initially was

I took correctve action from these useful sites and recoved the sparsebundle

But the message "sparse bundle could not be accessed (error -1)" just would not go away and

  • XServe crashes repeatedly when trying to backup certain portion of XSAN wit

    Hello everybody,
I have noticed a very strange behaviour the reason of which I could not figure out yet.
    Basic Setup:
    XSAN2, 2 MD controllers running 10.5.6 server, 3 clients running 10.5.6 server
XSAN1, 2 MD controllers running 10.4.11 server. 2 clients running 10.4.11 and 10.5.6 server, one of which is our backup machine.
Backup is done regularly using Bakbone Netvault 7.45 onto an Overland Tape Library.
The Netvault Server is not (yet) part of the XSAN2, as we are migrating from XSAN1.4 to XSAN2 and the backup machine has to handle clients in both.
Now, backup of the 10.4.11 clients and 10.5.6 clients runs smooth except for one.
When I try to backup certain data from one specific machine in XSAN2, this repeatedly crashes with the following kernel panic:

  • Time Machine crashes when trying to view Mail

Using Time Machine to backup. I can see on my backup drive that it is producing the incremental backups.
In Finder, when I click on TM to view previous times/days, it works fine. I am able to view files and folders that were previously there. I am able to recover old files.
In Mail, when I click TM, it tells me to "Click Restore to retrieve" whatever mailbox I have selected, and then TM crashes within seconds. Mail stays open, as it is not effected.

That's not the best way to recover files, as you may have permissions or other problems with them. Use the TM "Star Wars" display (once you get it fixed).
In Mail, when I click TM, it tells me to "Click Restore to retrieve" whatever mailbox I have selected, and then TM crashes within seconds. Mail stays open, as it is not effected.
Does that also happen when you go into TM from a Finder window, or iPhoto?
Do you see not only the +Today (Now)+ window, but a "cascade" of windows behind it, and a TimeLine on the right? Is there a starry background, and is it moving?
If all those are "yes," then TM is having trouble reading your backups. Do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on the drive, via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
If any of those are "no," this can be caused by any of a number of things. Try these fixes:
If you're using a Finder replacement (such as Pathfinder), be sure the Finder is running.
If you're using Spaces, turn it off temporarily.
If you have a second monitor, or anything plugged-in to a video-out port, disconnect it temporarily.
De-select your TM drive via TM Preferences > Change Disk (select "none"), then re-select the correct one.
Do a "complete reset" of TM, as in item #A4.
Do a +*Repair Disk+* on your TM drive.
Try or create another user (System Preferences > Accounts). If it works ok from that user, delete the file:
+*<home folder of the user where it doesn't work>/Library/Preferences/com.Apple.Finder.plist+*

  • Time Machine issue, TM didn't backup (save) files for a 7 days...

    Hi all!
Yesterday I delete one DMG file from HDD, today I have needeed it suddenly, so I decide to take a look in TM, open TM and can't find this file however the file was in the system around at least 10 hours untill I deleted it. So, in no one backup, so actually in a 10 backups, this file just didn't exist. After that I decided to make experiment, just created a folder on a desktop, run TM and delete this file, so the result was that this folder also didn't  save to backup. In i-net can't find any solution. I made Restore Disk Permissions and made reboot, now it's working as it has to be, but anyway the question is still open, what was a problem for this?!
But the way, MBP Mid 2010, 10.6.7, with all latest updates, TM using external drive WD Scorpio Blue 640GB.

  • Time machine says unable to complete backup as file is too large

I have a 500 GB Time capsule and it says when carrying out a back up that it can't be completed as the file size is too large, back up requires 233.01 GB and only 211.95 GB are avaliable. Does this mean i need to buy a bigger Time capsule/external hard drive?

    Thanks for the help.
From what I can work out I think as I don't have my computer on all the time long enough to carry out a back up it now wants to do another full back up and I don't have the space on the Time capsule to do that. I will go into a Apple store to check I am right but it looks like I will need to buy a bigger externel hard drive.
    Thanks again

  • Time machine fails

Time machine works for a while and then fails.  I've replaced external drives, gotten larger ones, but it still seems to fail.  The latest message:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only.
You may need to repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can’t be repaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk.
I ran repair disk under disk utility and it says there appears to be no problem with the disk.  I had not used this 1 TB backup for 6 months, however it worked fine for 3 backups and then came up with the above.  Same problem prior to this with a 250 GB drive.  My macbook pro (mid 2010) has only 250GB on the hard drive.  It is partitioned with parallels.
Any ideas why time machine keeps failing?

  • Time Machine Doesn't Seem to Backup Titles and Keywords in iPhoto

    Hi
I have just noticed that Time Machine does not seem to backup certain metadata attached to the photos. Do you know if I am doing something wrong here?
    Using iPhoto version 7.1.5.
    Thanks

Someone was doing manual backups of their photos and I said - 'why don't you just use time machine'. I assumed it kept everything - but I thought I would check.
    What I did
    1. Opened iPhoto in Finder
    2. Entered Time Machine
    3. Found an example Photo I wanted to Restore (I chose a photo with a different Title to the 'name' of the photo (given to it by the camera) and one with a keyword).
    4. In Time Machine I could see the correct Title, but not the Keyword.
    5. Selected it > Restore
    6. Photo restored after giving a 'Duplicate' warning. Photo restored only has the 'name' but not the Title or the Keyword.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks

How can I force Time Machine to make a complete backup of my Hard Drive.  I just installed a new external drive for Backup since my previous one failed.  Now when I back up, Time Machine only backs up my data folder and the Users folder.
When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

Hi I'd like to jump in here. Your app showed me this:

  • Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  Tried suggestions I've seen on the forum.

Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  I've tried various suggestions I've seen on the forum but nothing has worked.  TIme Machine worked fine for the last two years and just suddenly started having this problem every time.  The only thing that was a little different is that the computer was off for a week while on vacation and then I added a large amount (20 GB) of photos. Now the requested backup size is 82GB, which is large, and process proceeds very slowly for 2-3 hours before failing with the message mentioned.  I have more than enough available backup storage space for it.  Before failing, Time Machine has backed up no more than 12GB or so of the backup.  It fails during different files each time.
I've turned off the computer sleep feature, and I've checked that the NAS is set to never automatically power down. I normally backup over Wi-Fi, but I've also tried connecting to Ethernet and it still has the same problem.  It's odd because I also have a MacBook Pro that is still backing up fine to the same NAS using the MacBook's Time Machine.
I am using an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS.
I have system logs that I can share if helpful.  The logged messages vary a bit from run to run, but here are some messages that I've been seeing:
I always get this message near the beginning of the backup:
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
I've gotten this messsage a number of times:

Those indicate that your NAS is not fully compatible with Snow Leopard.

That looks like a problem was found with the file system (data) on the TM disk.  I don't know the details, but OSX tried to recover it from the journal, and found extra data on the drive.    Likely a result of the incompatibility mentioned above.

    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.
That's a problem writing to the NAS drive.
But the backup continued after all this.

Something caused a disconnect.  Can't tell from the log what it was.
I doubt it's a problem with something in OSX being damaged or corrupted, but reinstalling OSX isn't a major hassle, so might be worth a try.
To be incompatible with Snow Leopard, this NAS must be at least a couple of years old.  It may be beginning to fail.
Contact the maker.  See if there's an update to make it compatible with Snow Leopard.  If so, that might fix it.
If not, or if that doesn't fix it, see if they have any diagnostics that will shed any light.
