Time Machine / FileVault / External Backup solutions needed.

Hi,
I have a MBP that was playing up a little while ago, after visiting the Apple store I was told to back up my data and do a clean install of Snow Leopard, once that's done, to only pull back the files/folders needed, this has all be done and my MBP is working lovely now.
I am now backing up my information to an External HDD on a regular basis via Time Machine (TM) and that's great, BUT I can't password protect the EX-HDD!
Question: Is there a way to password protect my EX-HDD? I shall be partitioning the drive soon and sharing it with another user and I don't want them to be able to access my files and folders.
What options do I have, I've been YouTube'ing all day and checking the forums but I just can't seem to find a definitive answer.
My goals are: -
1) To allow another user to back up their MB to my EX-HDD on their partition of the drive.
2) Password protect my partition on the EX-HDD so access to read/write is only granted once password is accepted.
3) Continue to use TM on both partitions when backing up
Question - Is FileVault a viable option? I've read that once files are encrypted the lag literally spoils the experience of OSX.
Question - Do FileVault and Time Machine work seamlessly together?
Any help is greatly appreciated, I've been trying to find a solution to this all day.

Hey thanks for your input, I was reading about another solution which I have started, where I can use Disk Utility to encrypt folder/files and only mount them when needed. There were two options to do this.
(1) is to create a sparse disk image - and I believe that I would then set a size limit for the disk image encrypt it, provide a password and let TM back up the .dmg file and away I go.
or
(2) is to create a sparse bundle disk image, same as option one, only it will just encrypt portions of files/folders that have been changed and not the whole image like option 1.
I've gone with option two and given it a dummy run and it's all good, however when setting the allocated sizes for the volumes and the image is created, is there anyway to increase and decrease the allocated amount at any given time? And if so, how...?
And to clarify Sparse disk bundle image + Time Machine = play nicely?
I've tried to be as clear as possible and I hope that the above makes some sense.

  • Time Machine, FileVault & Windows Backup Best Practice

I read a lot on the forums about people wanting the best way to backup, when they had FileVault and also Windows files.
This is what I did, I have a 250 GB Lacie external drive:
    1) 2 Partitions: 177 GB Mac OS Extended, 55 GB FAT32 (This disk was entirely FAT32 and MacOS Disk Utility wouldn't resize it to make space or even recognize the unpartitioned space I created in Windows, using a third party tool. So I resized in Windows, created a new ext2 partition, connected to Mac and erased it as Mac OS Extended. Mac sees 2 partitions now and automatically wants to use one for TimeMachine)
    2) I use FileVault on my home folder, only for personal pictures and documents. I keep the iTunes music folder out of my home folder
    3) Use Time Machine to back up everything but my home folder
    4) Create an encrypted image of my FileVaulted home folder on the same backup disk that I created. For ease, I use the same password as that of my login account. I used the Disk Utility's Image from Folder option for this.
So My pictures and documents are encrypted on my machine, they are copied as one encrypted file into the backup drive, and the rest of my machine is backed up by File Vault. I do not have to log out, though it is a manual step for me to create the Image from folder. I don't mind doing that for now as I will need to do it only when I add new pictures to this folder. I would then make a new image on the backup drive.
I think this setup will work for me, if I do find things I can tweak I will post a follow up.

I set Super Duper to Back Up my PowerMac and to shut down after completing the back up, then i went to sleep. Six hours later, I woke up when I heard the fans spinning profusely and the Mac still not 'shut down'. Got following error log. Does anyone knows what has went wrong? Have I potentially 'fried' the CPU?

  • Errors with Time Machine (not completing backup, and needing to erase the ".inProgress" package)

I have in a previous discussion been talking about errors with my Time Machine backup.  The errors were with a problem with Indexing a file, it fails and stops the whole backup.  Each time it attemps another backup, it fills my ".inProgress" package with a (nearly) whole backup, filling my Time Machine hard drive, and thus errasing my previous good backups.  The error occurs after about 95% completion.
In my last post of a similar disscussion, the problem was indexing the Preference Pane files and this caused the whole backup to fail.  This was my last post there:  (below in some additional info of my situation)
I did exclude the MobileMe.prefPane.  And I got:

This time it was the Mouse.prefPane that caused the error.  I'd like to exclude the entire PreferencePanes directory.
This was my error message this time:
I just realized this was on my small Developers partition.  Perhaps there is an error with the build, OR an error with the initial restore.  I'd like to perhaps exclude the entire /Volumes/Mac OS Lion GM.  I expect that Time Machine is working fine with my main partition and the error happens when it's almost done with the Mac OS Lion GM partition.
The problem now is that I only have 265 GB of 3 TB available on my Time Machine HDD.  If attempt another backup, it'll surely erase about 410 GB of my past saved backups.  I've already lost 6 months, and I only have two months left of backups.  I need to erase the ".inProgress" package again.  That'll take time, and it's impossible to do from this main partition, even at root access.  This ".inProgress" has a total of two (nearly) full backups; it didn't cleanup the first full backup attempt while starting the second, perhaps it would have had it finished.  But I fear even if I exclude the whole "Mac OS Lion GM" partition,  It'll create a third full backup before cleanup and erase ~400 GB of previous good backups.  Then, I'll have a total of 4 (nearly) full backups!  3 TB is just enough without any past backups.
Maybe I'll just copy my documentations of my 'errasing the ".inProgress" package'  last time (from the Mac OS Lion GM partition) and do a full restore of just that partition.  Thus erasing the errors all together.  If it doesn't fix the errors then this could be a bug in the build that doesn't allow Time Machine to work.  I've always included this partition in Time Machine before, even with other Lion builds, so I suspect that it was an error in the initial restore.  (I may be answering my own questions, and that the inital restore (of the small partition) is the problem, and I just need to re-restore the small partition)
Again, I'm going to have to erase the ".inProgress" file to regain 1.53 TB of space before proceeding.
Also, I gave myself permission to read the ".Backup.345781513.887697.log", the log that was created last night when I first started Time Machine this last time.  It was interesting, but didn't show the error I could see from the console.
Right now, mds and mdworker appear to be going crazy even after I just now turned off Time Machine.  I think I'll let it go for the rest of the night.  Then I'll work on erasing the ".inProgress" package from the other partition boot up.
That was my entire last post.  To add some information, I have two OS X partitons, both Mac OS X Lion.  One is my large main partition, the other is one I don't mind testing with.  I recently replaced my internal hard drive in my iMac and restored from Time Machine both partitions.  This appeared to go smoothly.  But I have yet to create a single successful Time Machine backup since.  At first it was doing a Full Backup, which I didn't like, but now it just aborts around 95% completion.  Each, time, it tries it fills the Time Machine hard drive with duplicate (nearly) full backups errasing my older good backups.  I would like to erase the ".inProgress" file to save space.
My main question in this new discussion is does anyone know of a good way of erasing the ".inProgress" file? This is so I can preseerve my previous backups.  ACLs and other permissions seem to make it impossible to erase from this startup partition, the one I'm running Time Machine from.  Even at root level, if I give myself permission to change permissions or delete a file, it'll say Operation not Permitted instead of Permission Denied.  I have been able to delete this ".inProgress" package before when booting from the other  partition, but with great difficulty.  I have had much help from another Member in this Support Community when it comes to solving my Time Machine problems.  I think I have found the problem (indexing files in my small OS X partition), as stated in my copy& pasted post above, but I really need to delete this inProgress package first to save space before continuing!

Now I'll have to fix the small partition?  How's the best way to do this?  There could be thousands of files that won't index fine.
See if there's anything you haven't done, that applies, in the pink box of #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting
Otherwise, since most (or all?) of the indexing errors are in OSX, you might want to just reinstall it.  Something may have gone wrong sometime, that damaged those files.
I reviewed #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting and I have already done most of those things.  I have just learned something new though:
When I included my Main OS X partition again, I got an indexing error for the first time for that partition.  I might be interesting to note that the _spotlight process was running, and it's running again (the magnifying glass has a dot and it generically says "Indexing Tom's iMac").  mdworker, mds and backupd processes really are working hard, one moment they used over 500% of my CPU.  It's nice to know for once quad core is good for something other than video encoding.  (Now if they could just get the Finder to do more than 100.1%, only 1 thread is doing 100%, I'd like to see file size calculations 8 times quicker!)
I never got an indexing error once in the past 2 weeks for that large Mac OS X v10.7.2 main volume, and it had appeared to finish that partition backup before running into problems with my smaller test partition.  Also, I had just updated the smaller test partition with a later build of Mac OS X.  But It appears that the beta builds are clearly not the problem.  I thought I could just restore again (from the December 4th backup) the small partition and both would be fine.
I'll finish reviewing all the suggestions on Time Machine - Troubleshooting and go from there.  Hopefully, the _spotlight indexing simutaniously was the only problem.  It's strange that the indexing hasn't happened since the original restore last week untill I finally got a good clean complete partial Time Machine backup.  Why would the first Time Machine backup trigger indexing again?
For now, I'm going to exclude the Main Partition again, and let another good backup run.  And try your suggestions.  (And wait till mds, mdworker, etc. to finish!)
I have the logs of the first two sucsessful backups and the last two failed backups from the last 3 hours, if that would help.?

  • Using Time Machine & Superduper as backup solutions

I have a 2 TB firewire drive that I have partitioned into a partition for Time Machine and Superduper.  My thought is to have a bootable backup using Superduper and use Time machine for individual user file storage and recovery.  I also have Parallels running and the Vista environment under Parallels is about 200 GB.  Time machine is always backing up that file if I have Parallels running, so i am excluding Windows Vista.pvm which is that environment.  What else can I exclude safely from Time Machine that is just redundent if I am using Superduper.
I am going to schedule Superduper to run at 2:00 AM each day.
Any concerns or suggestions about my approach or are their any alternatives that would be better.

Yes, you do.  First, they don't take up much space (they're only backed-up when they change); second, you can't do a full system restore without them.    See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #11, especially the pink box.
Superduper may be just as easy a way to restore a file like an app that does not change from month to month.
A "simple" app, yes.  A "complex" one (typically one that came with its own installer), no.  Those put other files in other places, and/or "helper" apps; if you don't also restore all of them, the app won't work properly.
Again, the space saved is rarely significant.

  • HELP: I can't enter the Time Machine for critical backups I need

I made a boo-boo today and removed a home directory that had everything in it.  No problem, I thought... just enter Time Machine.
Well, it isn't working.   And I did try removing the /Library/Preferences/*.plist for TimeMachine -- no luck.  I've re-selected the disk, no luck.
This is very disappointing, but I'm also a bit panicked.  I need that data restored.
How can I get this to work properly?
    Thanks.

Even though I turned off Time Machine backups, it just happily runs in the background.
Correct;  turning it off means it won't start any new backups; but if one is running, it won't cancel it.  You have to do that manually.
Also, restoral of files ended up getting interrupted as it said I didn't have permission to access something (and it didn't tell me what).
You can't restore an entire user home folder that way -- OSX won't let you delete the old one, as it's in use.  You should have gotten a message to that effect (although some of them are rather cryptic).
It also sounds like the backups may be corrupted.  Try to Repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Your best bet, unless the backups are damaged, is to do a full system restore, per  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.

  • I have 2 iphoto libraries but one is lost, missing, cannot seem to find it... tried an apple care person - they were no help - we use Time Machine for external backup... but cannot find my older iPhoto library! I desperately need some help!

I have recently had something really odd happen within iphoto.  My photos from May-Oct 2013 appeared to be missing from my primary Iphoto library.
last night I was trying to find any additional Iphoto libraries on my Imac... I could not find them... but then somehow the May-Oct 2013 library showed up and now I cannot find the "current" primary Iphoto library.   I sought help from apple care today but no solutoin from them after 2 hours trying.  I have timemachine that backs up my Imac each day to an external hard drive.   When I open Iphoto while holding down the "option" key - it lets me choose which Iphoto library... but only (1) library comes up...  I can't figure out what happened - but it seems that I must have more than one Iphoto library because yesterday I was able to see all my photos except the "gap in dates" from May-Oct 2013.  Today - I can only open a Library called Iphoto2014... and it contains the photos from the gap in dates.  I can't "see" any other options to open photos... but just yesterday there appeared to be a different library available.
Any advice or steps i should take to locate my missing photos - would be soooooo much appreciated.

  • 365 gig used, 1TB external HD-Time Machine bu fail -claims to need 1.3TB...

I have an iMac with a 500 gig internal hard drive. We have used close to 365gig of that.
I originally tried to set Time Machine up with a couple of older/smaller external HD's. Time Machine told me that it needed 800gig to back up.
I purchased a 1TB LaCie external hard drive.
Tonight when I tried to set up Time Machine it failed and said it now needed 1.3TB.
I have now read through various discussions on sizing the drive for backup and generally it is suggested that 2 to 3 times is fine.
It is also noted that there is no way to restrict this size other than by excluding items. I would prefer to not do this as the point is to back up our entire music, photo and video libraries.
Also, it appears that once set up Time Machine works with the size of back up drive you have and deletes older backups.
I am reluctant to now purchase an additional hard drive, to find that it now needs even more space as the space required seems to be growing exponentially.
I seem to be locked into a catch-22 situation of Time Machine requiring space at a faster rate than I can buy a hard drive.
    Any advice?
My ideal solution is telling Time Machine to restrict the size of the back up somehow. I realize, based on previous discussions that this does not seem possible.
1.3TB of back up for a 365gig seems excessive.

How many disks are connected to the system?
Is it possible that Time Machine is trying to backup more than
one disk (if there is more than one)?

  • Time machine on external drive will not back up itunes media file on a separate external drive. Have already reformated itunes media drive, dragged itunes media backup file from time machine (old copy) and removed time machine plist and restarted.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
    Any help for this??
    Thanks

I am trying to confirm the time at which a particular backup occurred using an external hard drive that I have since misplaced. Although time machine lists the backup times for some backups, it does not list them for all, including the one in question. Can someone help?

Okay, I've sussed it.  I saw a link to another discussion that hadn't turned up in any of my searches before I posted the question above.
My Tosh HDD was formatted to FAT 32 and therefore would not be backed up by Time Machine.  I removed all data from it - nightmare as I hadn't enough space to put it on the macbook HDD, but, after trawling through numerous photos and deleting rubbish for hours, I finally made enough space and copied all data across.  Then, after clearing the data from the Tosh HDD, I used disk utilitity to reformat it to Mackintosh OS Extended.  Chose the option without kournalling because I'm not baking up onto this disk and so don't need it - according to some other discussions I found.
When it was done I check on time machine in system prefs and once I selected options, I was able to remove it from the excluded from backups list.  Hey presto.  Now I'm moving my photo library and my music library onto the Tosh HDD and my macbook should start to breath again.  Hurray.

Not those whole folders, but their contents, maybe.
If the user account now on the Mac has read rights to the user account(s) on the backups, yes.  If not, you may have to do some finagling.
Try the Browse Other Backup Disks option, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17.  If you find an account that can open those folders, restore what you want to an alternate location (#16 in the FAQ).
If not try creating one or more accounts temporarily.

  • My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk).  Can I do this?

My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk) for a few weeks.  This same disk was used to back-up the Pro earlier, and to migrate from the Pro to the Air.  Can I do this "back-migration" from the Air to the Pro?  Is it maybe better just to migrate the specific folders (Outlook email, Office docs) I am sure I need?

Do not attempt to copy files/folders from a Time Machine backup. Only use the Time Machine application to restore from the backup.
Click on a Finder window and select Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "restore" and select "restore items backed up with time machine" from the hints list. You will find these two articles:
Recover items using Time Machine and Spotlight
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can use Time Machine with Spotlight to recover lost or deleted items.
Note: You can retrieve earlier versions of TextEdit documents from within TextEdit. For more information, see:
View and restore past versions of documents
Open a Finder window and type a search word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner.
Select a location to search in the location bar.
Refine the results by specifying search criteria. Narrow down Spotlight search results
Open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, then choose Enter Time Machine.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the Time Machine backups. Your search is performed in every window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it’s returned to the Documents folder.
Restore items backed up with Time Machine
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can easily bring back lost items or recover older versions of files.
You can use Time Machine within many apps. If the iCloud Documents & Data feature is turned on, you can recover older versions of iCloud documents as well as regular documents.
Open a window for the item you want to restore. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. To recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail. To recover an iCloud document, open the document’s app, choose File > Open, then click iCloud to view the iCloud documents for that app.If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
From the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, choose Enter Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the snapshots and backups.White tick marks represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk. If a tick mark appears dimmed or grayed, there’s no backup available or the backup disk is not connected.
For more information about an item, double-click it.The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk. The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder.

Has Apple recently up-dated my OS (Lion) such that every time the screen saver starts it disables Time Machine.  I have to switch-off the computer and re-start in order to undertake  a back-up.  I have now switched of all screen savers.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • HT3275 Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP feat

Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  "Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."  What are AFP features and how do I get Time Machine to backup to my current external backup?

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

  • Time Machine fails to backup HD and stalls computer when backing up to external HD (Western Digital WD5000MT) when using Firewire 800 but works fine using USB

I have a mid 2012 MBP (MacbookPro9,1) running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  When I start a Time Machine backup to an external Western Digital HD (WD5000MT) connected using a Firewire 800 cable, my open programs stop responding and in general my computer freezes up not allowing me to open activity monitor or the console utility.  I can't even shut down or restart my computer and must hard boot to reset.  Though removing the firewire cable that goes to the external HD can sometimes get my system working again.  However, the WD external HD also has a usb port and when I connect it to my computer via a USB cable, Time Machine seems to backup my system fine without stalling my computer.  This same external HD worked fine with Firewire 800 using my old late 2007 MBP running snow leopard.  I should note that my brother has the exact same model WD external HD and he also had issues with the firewire port on his MBP running mountain lion.  I have run the disk utility checking for disk/file permission errors and the drive itself seems fine.  I initially formatted that drive as ExFAT but while troubleshooting reformatted to HFS+ and still had the same issue.  I tested using a different firewire 800 cable but still had the same issue.  Can't think of anything else to do.  I don't have another firewire-compatible device to test if it is the HD vs the firewire port.   I would prefer to use the firewire port for quicker transfer speeds but I'm stuck with USB for now.  Any suggestions?
