Time machine_ filling up too fast!  Mac Os X Version 10.6.8

time machine_ can I get it to just back up 1 area of my computer and not the entire network? I did not originally set this thing up and know nothing about it but I find that it fills up very quickly (1TB) and then starts dumping the earliest stuff. In reality I only want one area of my computer backed up and not the entire network and I think that that is why it is filling up so quickly. very frustrating to loose stuff that I originally wanted to keep.
any suggestions?
thanks

How much data is on your internal HD?
Time Machine won't back up anything on your network, and will back up external HDs only if you remove them from the exclusion list.
If possible, it's best to let Time Machine back up everything (unless you also have a "clone" backup), as it will be rather difficult to reconstruct things when (not if) your internal HD fails and loses everything.

  • External Drive Filling Up Too Fast

    Hi all,
The space on my external hard drive seems to be filling up way faster than it should. Although I've hardly added any docs, etc to my internal iMac drive in the past week (used about 50 G of my 320G drive), the free space on my external USB drive has dwindled from ~20G to a little over 4G.
I thought that Time Machine only backed up the changed files during each archive. What's going on? Why am I running out of external HD space so quickly?
    Thanks for your responses.

I'm with Maggot. I have not been using iphoto at all, don't use entourage at all. Just started using Time Machine the first of January with a brand new 500g ext hd for the back up. As of today it has used up over 1/2 that space in backups. I am a photographer, and do use hi res images, but the number of images that should be stored right now should not take up that much space - and that would be the bulk of my work that would eat up space. When I look back in Time Machine, it looks to me that there is a complete backup of everything over and over again.
So, looks to me that I have a real mess to figure out now. I had thought that only the new files would be backed up NOT the older files, but that's not what I'm seeing. Yuck. I haven't got a clue now as to what to do to get this set up properly. HELP!

  • IPod 60gb storage question - filling up too fast?

I have a new 60GB that I just began adding music to. I am confused about the amount of storage I have available. So far (according to the iTunes notes) I have added 93 songs/6.2 hours/427.6mb, using 17.19GB out of 60GB. I am importing using the AAC encoder at 128kbps.
Am I missing something here? I thought the 60GB could hold around 15,000 songs. At this rate, I will fill up the iPod before I hit 1000 songs. I do not have anything else (pics/videos), just music.
Any help would be much appreciated. I am (quite obviously) new to this and can't figure out where I have messed up.
    Thank you!

I was able to answer my own question here...I had just switched some USB cables around, so when I did my normal back-up to my external hard-drive, it ended up backing up to my iPod. Phew! I am embarrassed, but at least it was an easy fix.

  • IPod Nano fills up too fast

I have loaded about 1G of songs (300 or so songs)on my new iPod Nano 4G and it says I only have 300k memory left. Does anyone know how this happens and how to correct it?
    Thanks.
    Jared

    Jared,
Are you sure that the music (and album art?) is really only 1GB? Using Apple Lossless, e.g., will result in larger files.
Anyway, you can restore the iPod to it's original state using the updater (on the iPod CD)...

    This is the problem.
I think you can understand it.I can't. I don't understand what Eclipse and JBoss have to do with webstart and I can't understand what webstart has to do with deploying an applet.
Its all just completely unrelated! I'm just going to make a dumb assumption and say that it is your computer.

  • Time is running too fast

    Hi there
I've got an iphone 2g, FW 3.1.3 and a very strange issue:
The clock is running too fast. After one day the time on my phone is 1 hour ahead ( 1hour/each day). When i connect and sync, the time on my phone jumps back to the normal time, the time on my macbook.
I did a total reset (came from version 3.0), but with no luck.
Ive got no option "Set time automatically" in my Firmware version.
I hope somebody has any idea what's going wrong.
    Thank you for reading anyway.
    regards

  • IMovie import plays WAY TOO FAST!

I am importing video from a DV (Sony DCR-HC96) straight into iMovie. The transition is smooth and recorded content plays in normal time from DV camera. During transition, the video appears in normal speed on the Mac.
However, when the import is completed -- and I try and PLAY the video on my Mac (MacBook Pro), the speed of the movie is SCREAMING FAST (16x-20x too fast.)
    Anybody feeling smart about this?
    Would really(!) appreciate your help....

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
When you say "transition" I think you mean "import" ..the process of passing the video from the camcorder into iMovie. (..A "transition" is generally something which you apply in iMovie; a means of changing from one video clip to another via a 'cross-fade' or a 'dissolve', etc..)
The specifications for this camera, on Sony's page (click on that blue link) and on Amazon's page both mention..
    "..Progressive Shutter System
A mechanical shutter system that provides progressive scan performance while utilizing an interlaced scanning system. Digital still images will be sharp and clear with excellent definition."
If you've shot your movie(s) using progressive recording (..using a shutter speed marked 'p', such as '30p' or '24p'..) then iMovie may play it back faster than normal. This is because iMovie normally expects DV to consist of two 'interlaced' fields of video (two sets of lines which each make up half-a-picture) instead of single full frames of video.
(..On the other hand, the "progressive" in the specifications may refer only to still photos; it's not easy to tell from the descriptions whether or not the video may be shot as progressive, too..)
If it's NOT playing fast because you've shot progressive video ('p') instead of interlaced video ('i'), then I can't think of a reason just now why it'd be playing fast ..sorry.

Hi, I'm not sure what information to give you other than it's a G5 running 10.4.11. Drives I'm not sure about and it is connected using a firewire that is showing up fine in the "About this Mac" window. Here is what it says there:
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
    ELURA70:
    Manufacturer: Canon
    Model: 0xE
    GUID: 0x8500009F154D
Maximum Speed: Up to 100 Mb/sec
    Connection Speed: Unknown
    Sub-units:
    ELURA70 Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x10001
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA02D
When I select "Capture" the video on the camera, which is connected through a rear FireWire port, doesn't come on the computer screen. The picture reads, "Preview Disabled." The picture does appear on the camcorder itself and the run times on both the preview box and the camcorder are in sync with one another but there is no picture on the computer screen of the video I'm trying to import. When I put the camera in play and press now the the black screen pops up and reads, "THIS OPERATION COULD NOT BE COMPLETED THERE IS NO VIDEO." I can mark in and out points for clips but if I select clip FCE states that there is no video so it can't be completed.
After doing searches on the web it seems like this is a very common problem. I tried trashing the preferences, reinstalling the program, and upgrading Quicktime to 7.3. At this time I'm getting very frustrated and it seems like such a common problem and the people who have this it seems like they are never able to fully fix it because its an odd bug of some kind. Thanks for your assistance.

  • Super drive closes too fast

My super drive closes too fast. Also the drive is very sensitive and when I place a dvd on the drive, it will close right away. Many times catching the dvd at an angle and getting stuck with the dvd hanging out and the drive trying to close.
Is there a way to make the drive less sensitive? Is there a way to set the drive to only open and close when I press the eject button? I want to control when the drive opens and closes, I don't want it to be automatic.

    Hi delnorte,
I agree with mooblie that your drive might be faulty.
My Mac Pro's Superdrive closes automatically after exactly 10 minutes.
I suppose there is a remote possibility that your Keyboard's eject button might be faulty. Do you have, or can you borrow, another keyboard to try out?
Also, possibly there might be a command in Terminal to sort out your problem, but I am afraid that I cannot advise you in that respect, because I do not have either the expertise or the confidence to delve into there.
I think Terminal is a no go area for many Mac users, which is probably a great shame, because, from reading articles in MacWorld UK and Mac Format, it is amazing just what can be done in there if you have the know-how.
If any "Terminal genius" is reading this, do you know of a solution therein?

    Bill

  • Itunes can't burn this cd because the burn speed is too fast for your cd...

For the first time since upgrading to 10.3.9 I'm trying to burn a data disc from iTunes to backup some files. It fails every time and ruins the blank CD. This is getting expensive!
The CDs are Phillips CD-R 52x. (Yes, I've used blanks from this very box before the 10.3.9 upgrade and it never failed before.) iTunes was set to 24x burn then changed to "maximum possible" for the burn speed.
Most times it looks like it's burning the playlist but around the 5th file it spits it out and gives the error "itunes can't burn this cd because the burn speed is too fast for your cd burner or media". Sometims it just locks up itunes with "checking media" and I have to force quit iTunes. Then the disc is ruined. It won't even show up in Finder.
Ugh. Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Battery too fast get low

just use 4 hour battery low battery

Some of the links below cover extending battery time.
Try this first -  Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • How should I debug a PVM that is crashing & rebooting too fast ?

I have a newly created oel4u6 PVM that appears to be starting but then crashing & rebooting too fast and I don't know how to best debug it. • Can't burn disc via iTunes. Burn speed too fast. AGAIN!

"iTunes can't burn this CD because the burn speed is too fast for your CD burner or media. Choose a lower speed in the burning pane of iTunes Preferences then try burning again".
I have been having on going problems burning CD’s in iTunes for YEARS, and I know I am not the only one. I get the error message above. Having checked the forum at the time, and posted for help, I am know there is no real solution except to change brand of disc.
Thing is, now I can’t get ANY brands to work. I’ve been through Verbatim, Maxell, JVC, Sony, but none work. The only brand that would work were TDK audios which I can no longer find anywhere.
I know its not the burner, as Toast works fine, and I know I am not alone. Anyone got any ideas?
Even after years Apple seem to be blanking this question. It’s very frustrating not being able to burn my purchased itunes downloads to disc.

To anyone who is interested I think I may have found a possible solution. When you put a blank disc in the drive, wait about 30-60 seconds or so for it to stop spinning before burning.
This seems to work. It's a bit sticky but eventually works. I tried both TDK & Maxwell discs and 9 out of 11 worked. Absolutely no reason why the other 2 didn't, but it's a lot better than none.
