Time Machine First Backup After Upgrade Stuck @ Deleting Old Backups

This has been going on for the past 4 hours.  Should I quit and start over.  I think I may have messed it up when I clicked the "Encypt Disk" during the first update...  Thanks...

Quite possibly.
I don't know how long it takes to encrypt about 480 GBs, but it will clearly take quite a while.
See #31 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some info on encrypting your backups.
Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

If you back up your mac before deleting your emails, Time Machine should back up your e-mails.
I never tried this so i'm not sure to find them in Time Machine. To browse in your backups simply click the Time Machine icon in your dock. In the right bar, you can select an backup. Than you can browse in finder, in your backkup.
EDIT: Just browsed and CT above was right. This topic might help you:

  • Time Machine quit working after Upgrade to 10.9.2

Time Machine quit working after I downloaded and installed the latest security upgrade 10.9.2. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure this is what you want. There are a lot of repeated, multi-line patterns that I left in simply because I really don't know what I'm doing.  My apologies if there is too much irrelevant information. Also, the logs did not go all the way back to when the problem started.

  • Time Machine in loop after upgrade to new mac

    Hello everyone,
I just bought a new MacBook to substitute my old iMac.
With this upgrade I also went from OS X 10.5.8 (iMac) to 10.6.4 (new MacBook).
On installation I chose for the Migration Assistant to copy my data from the latest TM Backup.
    Everything went fine.
Then TM asked if I wanted to continue to use my old backups on the new MacBook (or similar).
And I accepted. Then the first backup started ...
*... and now TM seems to be stuck in an infinite Loop. =(*
    It goes like this:
    1) Mounting Time Capsule/Sparsebundle
    2) "Verifying XXX.XXX Objects ..."
    3) "Preparing XXX.XXX Objects ..."
    4) "Deleting old backups"
    4) Cleaning up
    5) Disk Image/Sparsebundle ejected
... and then it immediately restarts that same procedure.
Over and over again. Now for over 14 hours straight.
(I have already stopped the backup a few times, as I thought a restart of my Mac would fix anything.
Didn't help ... so now I just left it running for a night + half a day).
    Also weird:
    • The disk image is still called "Backup of iMac Eddy"
    • And when viewed in the Finder/on the Time Capsule it's named "iMac Eddy.sparsebundle"
    • There's no MAC address in that sparsebundle name ... (?)
    • I changed my Mac's name in the System Prefs/Sharing ... with no change at all to time TM image ...
Anybody know a solution or can give me a heads up?
    Thanks in advance

Yes, that will happen when Time Machine has to do a very large backup (such as, of a new Mac).
Because of the way Time Machine stores the backups, it's impossible to tell how much space will be gained by deleting a single backup without actually deleting it. So it deletes the oldest one, "compacts" the sparse bundle to recover the space, then checks again. That will continue until there's enough space, or only one backup is left (then it will fail.)
So, subtract the other sparse bundle and shared data from the TC's capacity. If the result isn't at least 2 1/2 times the size of the data on your system, you're going to have to delete the sparse bundle, so Time Machine can start over. (Since TM won't delete the last backup, it needs room for it, plus a new one, plus 20% workspace.)
If there is enough room, you can speed up the process a bit, by manually deleting a bunch of old backups, then compacting the sparse bundle, per #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
    There is another option.
Connect a USB drive, partitioned so there's separate space for those shared files, so Time Machine can't use up all the empty space, as it will on the TC's disk). Let Time Machine start fresh backing-up the new Mac to the USB drive, and leave the existing backups on the TC's internal HD until you're sure you don't need them, then delete them. You can always browse (and restore from) them, via the +*Browse ...+* option. See #17 in the FAQ.

  • Time Machine to Restore After Upgrade

So I want to update to Snow Leopard soon, and my hard drive needs a reformat anyway, so I wanted to do a clean install. What I want to know is if Time Machine can still be used to restore any/all files after upgrading the OS. My guess is that I cannot do a full restore, but restoring 3rd party applications and all my files/documents should be ok. I just wanted to check...

    Strakerc wrote:
Thank you for the very quick response. I can do a full restore then?
You could, but it would restore Leopard. The "full restore" puts your entire system back, exactly the way it was at the time of any selected backup, even if that's a different version of Leopard or Snow. The first thing it does is erase your internal HD. See item# 14 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
What you should probably do to be extra safe is, make a separate backup of your Leopard system, either to another partition on the TM disk or a separate disk, via CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! These are full, bootable "clones," and will give you an extra layer of insurance.
Boot from the clone, make sure everything's there and working -- internet, apps, etc. Then use Disk Utility (while you're booted from the clone) to erase your internal HD. Then boot from your Leopard install disc and do a full restore, as per item #14 above. That will put your system back, but at the low end of the disk.
Run that way for several hours or a few days, until you're sure everything's ok.
Then do a normal install of Snow Leopard. It will get rid of Leopard, but won't touch your other data.
Then use Boot Camp to set up your Windoze partition.
    Edit:
Any other way of doing this may result in you having to re-authorize (and perhaps reinstall) some 3rd-party apps, re-enter license codes, etc., as the Migration process won't necessarily get things that aren't stored in your user folders.

  • Time Machine not working after upgrading to Lion

I have a Time Machine 1.2 which worked perfectly on my old iMac OSX.  A few months ago I purchased a new iMac which came with Snow Leopard, and it worked well.  But when Apple came to upgrade me to Lion, the Time Machine no longer works.   Is it not compatible with Lion??
At one stage I was told there was no room on the disk.  I then tried to delete most of the previous backups, leaving only a handful of backups - but still no luck.  I think I might have messed up things by then trying to edit the "do not back up" list. I tried to exclude some programmes applications , and now I am told there are no disks available to be backed up.
It is not very clear on the "options" screen, what one should do. What does the + and - indicate, and is it necessary to remove any files at all if I want a simple regular backup procedure on my home computer.
Lastly - if I wanted to uninstall and reinstall the Time Machine - is there a procedure?? I can't find one.
I hope someone can put me right.

I was brave and did what you said. (Thanks for being patient - I am an old lady).
I erased the external drive (called Time Machine Backups) in the diskutility.app.
Now - when I restarted Time Machine I am still told that there are no disks available to be backed up, and that this can happen if all disks are in the “Do not back up” list.
So maybe I really did mess up the list of items to be excluded from backups?
How do I restore the list now to what it should be?

  • Time machine stopped working after upgrading to lion

After upgrading to lion my time machine has not been able to back up. It takes a long time preparing and trying to back up and then stops with an error (without an error message being shown to the user). The status is delayed and it claims that the backup disk cannot be found (Im using a time capsule).
The system log contains the following entries (filtering on "time"):

    A

I finally figured out what was the problem. The disk utility tool found an error in the backup disk and fixed it. I guess some error occurred while the upgrade to Lion was on the way.

  • Time Machine before or after upgrade to Lion?

    Hi there,
I have always backed up all of my important data on to external Hard Drives/CD's/DVD's etc manually however to make life easier, I have now decided to start using Time Machine (should have done so a long time ago I know). I am also about to upgrade my iMac from Snow Leopard to Lion. My question is, should I perform a Time Machine back up before the upgrade or would it make sense to upgrade to Lion first & then perform the Time Machine back up.
The only advantage I can see by running Time Machine before the upgrade is in case there is an error/corruption in the upgrade process but having never used TM, I would really appreciate any advice.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Ben

Would Also Recommend that you do a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive Before attempting any Major Upgrade...
By far the easiest way to make a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade, you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.

  • TIme Machine not working after upgrade to snow lep.

I just updated to snow lep version from lep and now my time machine can't backup. It give an error message of "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Kelly Turner's Time Capsule/Kelly Turner’s iMac.sparsebundle” could not be created (error 22)."
I try to open airport utility and it finds my time capsule, but when chosen, this error message "Make sure your AirPort wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6722)" comes up after a long search to find configurations.
When open time capsule utility, it shows the capsule, but hangs when "making backup disk available" and fails to start backup.
I have had this setup for four years and not problems with connectivity or backups. I can still get on internet using wireless with airport, but the time capsule can't see it.
    HELP!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
It sounds like you need to reset your Time Capsule; probably a "soft reset" is enough. See [Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728].
You might also need to do a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Oddly enough, the name of your Time Capsule may be part of the problem. See #C9 in Troubleshooting. Why it sometimes works for a while, then suddenly doesn't, is a mystery.

  • Time Machine does not appear to auto delete old backups

I would like old backups to be automatically deleted, but so far does not appear to have occurred as I have not received any warnings. I have checked the box in the setup dialog box to do so. I have only 60GB remaining and receive warnings from Tech Tools that the free space threshold is at 2% remaining.
Does the drive have to be fully exhausted before older backups are automatically deleted (causing the warning), and if so should I turn off the Tech Tools warning for remaining disc space for that drive?
I am using an OWC Mercury Elite AL Pro 2TB external drive with an eSATA connection. Our typical business files can range from 100 to 300MB each. In the Apple Support Mac 101 Time Machine article it states "As your backup disk begins to fill up to its capacity, Time Machine intelligently deletes the oldest backups to make room for newer ones (and will alert you if the "Warn when old backups are deleted" option is selected in Time Machine preferences)." To date, this warning has not appeared making me think no deletions have occurred.
    Thanks for any thoughts, Scott

The oldest backup(s) won't be deleted until there isn't room for a new one. And "warning" is a bit misleading -- when there isn't enough space, the backup will fail, without deleting anything, until you deselect the option. See #C4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Note that this has changed for Snow Leopard; it does the deletion(s) automatically, then sends a notice.
and if so should I turn off the Tech Tools warning for remaining disc space for that drive?
Yes. That accomplishes nothing. Time Machine manages it's space automatically.
To date, this warning has not appeared making me think no deletions have occurred.
That's not strictly true; it applies only when Time Machine has to delete your oldest backups to make room for new ones. But it also deletes "expired" backups every time it does a new one. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Time Machine Kernel Panic after upgrading to 10.5.3

Time machine was not working correctly, so I was excited when software update 10.5.3.
However, now, not only is time machine still not working right but now it crashes.
This is a iMac 24" silver machine.
I repaired disk permissions and used tech tool deluxe with no errors reported.

Do you get the grey screen in five languages telling you that you need to restart your computer? That is what I get each time time machine tries to access the TC for backup or restore.

  • Mavericks speed up time machine first backup.

to speed up time machine,(this worked for me.) just turn of firewall and turn off wifi and ry not to use anything. simple!

Oops!  Just discovered that Time Machine was backing up the other half of the partitioned disk.  I will add that to the list of things not to back up.  PFL

  • Time Capsule / Time Machine First Backup

Now in the 14th hour of wirelessly backing up the 40 gigs on my MBP to my new Time Capsule (i.e., less than 2 gb per hour). Can I safely stop and then connect an ethernet cable to TC to complete the backup? Am I likely to speed up the transfer by doing this?

*"Can I safely stop and then connect an ethernet cable to TC to complete the backup?"*
    Yes
*"Am I likely to speed up the transfer by doing this?"*
    Most likely

  • Time machine first backup

I have 2 mac books and a 24" I mac. Just bought Time Capsule. Backed up fine on the Mac Books but it refuses to Back up the I mac. It says that The size is too big and the TC does not have space. I know for a fact that is not true. Mt TC is a tera, and the amount on my I mac HD is not more than 70GB. Collectively I have 240GB of Memory which is by far less than the Tera in my TC. Any Suggestions?

run Applications-->Utilities-->Console, choose "All Messages" and search for "backupd." Read the messages from backupd, they may be informative.

  • Time Machine says Backup Delayed After Upgrading to Lion

Time Machine says Backup Delayed After Upgrading to Lion on both my Macs. It backs up fine when ever I connect to the USB drive but now seems to want to back up hourly when before weekly was OK. When it does not compleye an hourly backup it reports a delayed backup - failure on both machines. How do it revert back to it reminding me to do weekly backups?

I'm having the same issue with Time Machine on OS X Lion!
    According to this webpage:     http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/LionChanges.html
Backups (i.e., Time Machine, SD, CCC, etc.) will only save the current "Version" of files.
The above statement sounds like the issue @iJRB and myself are having after upgrading to Lion where Time Machine shows the following error message below within "System Preferences > Time Machine"
@iJRB: Is this the error message you are seeing?
