Time machine first backup

I have 2 mac books and a 24" I mac. Just bought Time Capsule. Backed up fine on the Mac Books but it refuses to Back up the I mac. It says that The size is too big and the TC does not have space. I know for a fact that is not true. Mt TC is a tera, and the amount on my I mac HD is not more than 70GB. Collectively I have 240GB of Memory which is by far less than the Tera in my TC. Any Suggestions?

run Applications-->Utilities-->Console, choose "All Messages" and search for "backupd." Read the messages from backupd, they may be informative.

    I don't know how long it takes to encrypt about 480 GBs, but it will clearly take quite a while.

    Now in the 14th hour of wirelessly backing up the 40 gigs on my MBP to my new Time Capsule (i.e., less than 2 gb per hour). Can I safely stop and then connect an ethernet cable to TC to complete the backup? Am I likely to speed up the transfer by doing this?

    Something WAS radically wrong, but I don't know what it was. However, using Apple's disk utility, I decided to totally erase the Seagate, which was "pre-formatted" for Mac and PC.
    I first saved the Seagate software to my hard drive just in case I needed it later (which I don't),
    By the way, the first time I tried Time Machine it stalled after about 3 GB. The second time I got the message saying 25 days backup time. I stopped that backup after receiving your response.
    After reformatting (extended - journaled) I made my third attempt. Success!!! It took about 8 hours, but went through without a hitch..
    I bought the SeagateI because a momentary power failure messed up my 1 TB LaCie external, which was divided into 2 partitions. The power glitch completely fouled one partiton and it will not reformat no matter what I try. I did not do a full reformat because I did not want to lose the backup on the good partition. Now that I have a good backup I plan to do a full 1 TB reformat (without partitions) on the LaCie.

  • Time Machine reports backup disc needs to be 8.78 Tb.  I only have a 250Gb system drive???

    Thought I'd do a TM backup before installing Mavericks.  It messed up big time!
    I backup manually depending on how much stuff has accumulated.  It varies between a few Mb to 3 or 4 Gb sometimes more.  Today Time Machine decided that it wanted to reorganise the backup in some way.  I watched as the available space on the TM disk went up as TM set about the task.  After a couple or three hours TM actually started to do the backup.  The size of the backup being 500Gb or something like that.  Several hours later of listening to my fans working flat out I cancelled the back up with TM reporting that there was 200 odd Gb to go.  No warning from TM to say this was a bad idea.  It had been chuntering away for something like 5 hours.
    After halting the backup I thought I'd start the backup again just to see how much more needed to be done.  This is when I got the report that the backup disk needed to be in the order of Tb. And the oldest backup is now Nov 2013.  The oldest backup before this was way back in June 2012 (MacBookPro Rertina mid 2012) when I first bought the computer.
    Entering TM I find that even that is not complete. All but a couple of applications have dissapeared as have many other files.
    Trouble is I use it as an archive and happily delete files on my hard drive knowing that there is a copy in a backup that pre dates the deletion. 
    There is also an earlier backup from my previous machine - again as a rarely accessed archive.  So that's another reason not to reformat.
    I'm pretty sure all is lost and I think I just have to bite the bullet and risk not needing anything from the archive.  After all I have CD and DVD backups/archives that go back to the late '90s and I have rarely needed to access them over the years.  The biggest loss will be photos.  ****!
    Anyway.  What happened?  Why has TM gone off the rails?  I have done nothing different to what I have done in 5 years or so.  Is this normal behaviour?  If I hadn't have cancelled the back up would TM have slowly rebuilt all my backups as was?

    Before going any further please understand that's a very bad idea. It's beyond Time Machine's scope to do that. It is not an archival system and cannot be made to become one. Time Machine guarantees nothing other than one complete copy of the source volume's contents. Anything erased from the source becomes fair game for Time Machine to delete from the backup, the moment it requires the space it occupies.
    Next: I have no idea why the problem occurred, but a first and harmless troubleshooting step is to reset Time Machine by doing the following:
    Turn off Time Machine first, and make sure a backup is not in progress.
    Triple click to select the entire line, then control-click and select Services > Reveal in Finder. Drag the selected file to the Desktop, or directly to the Trash:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
    This will not delete your existing backups.
    Turn on Time Machine and reselect your backup volume. The effect of deleting that file will cause erroneous values to be shown in the "backing up xxx of yyy" messages until the subsequent backup.
    If it's any consolation, terminating Time Machine as you did is not an abnormal user action and did not cause the problem. It may have resulted in inaccurate information being written to the property list, which you will fix by deleting it. It's quite possible that your backups have remained intact. Just remember that anything you delete from the source may no longer exist following the subsequent backup, and that is to be expected.

    Choose Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu, provide the first computer's IP address, log in, and set it up in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences.

  • Time Machine thinks backup disk is full but its not

    I just purchased a new 1 Terabyte hard drive for backup. In the past I backed up both my internal Mac harddrive (250 Gb with 8gb free) and an external iOmega archive drive (DRIVE H 320Gb with 41Gb free) to a 500Gb Lacie drive. I purchased an iOmega 1 Terabyte drive (DRIVE G) because the Lacie drive was full. I went into Time Machine and changed the backup drive to the G one terabyte drive and did a full backup of my internal hard drive. When I did this I did not have the external H archive drive attached so Time Machine didn't back that up. I did it that way because I wanted to first backup the internal drive then do some work and then go backup the external archive drive over night. I plugged the H archive drive in, so it show up in the finder and then told Time Machine to Backup Now. It started the back up but right after doing the initial computations when it actually started backing up I got the standard error message that "the backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly..."  I've double checked that the backup disk is set correctly in Time Machine to the 1Tb G drive and when I do a Get Info on the G drive it shows Capacity: 1TB, Available: 713.54 GB.
    Is it possible something is wrong with the new drive? Can I test that?

    Its funny how sometimes asking a question can prompt  your thinking. As soon as I finished posting this I thought "of course Disk Utility".  I ran a check disk and got the following error message:
    Unused node is not erased (node = 107)
    I did a restore which corrected the error. Turned Time Machine back on and its backing up the rest of my data now.

    Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    You do not want to use Backup for large amounts of data. It's fine for it's original purpose: to get relatively-small amounts of data off-site to iDisk, automatically, but don't use it for anything more.
    Time Machine will back-up your entire system by default. The first backup is, of course, lengthy, but thereafter it will back-up only new and changed items hourly. This gives you an excellent chance to recover things that were deleted or changed in error, or somehow corrupted. But whether you use Time Machine or some other app, use something or you can lose some or all of your data in an instant.
    But the question here is, are you doing this only to get rid of some apps and files? If so, that's not the best approach. Unlike Windoze, a periodic reload is usually not needed on Macs.
    Unless your internal HD is over 85% full, your best bet may be to get an external drive thats at least twice the size of the data on your Mac and let TM do a full backup. Then start identifying and deleting the things you don't want. If you delete something you shouldn't, you can easily get it back from Time Machine (for a while).
    Most applications on Macs can just be deleted. Some need uninstallers. Apps will be where you put them, hopefully in your Applications folder. Most data will be in +<your home folder>/Library/Application Support,+ usually in a file or folder containing the name of the app or maker.
    Unless you're very tight on space, you could make a folder named +Apps to be Deleted+ or something similar, at the top level of your home folder, and move them and their data files there, rather than delete them immediately. You could even create a sub-folder for those apps that have data files, and put both the apps and files inside them. Once you're sure they're not needed, delete them.
    Doing it the other way is much riskier; if you omit things you actually need, all sorts of things may go wrong, unpredictably.

  • Time machine fails backup

    Can anyone advise me?
    I use Time Machine to backup. All has been well the backups were flawless until recently when I decided that I needed to encrypt my sensitive work and personal files placing them into an encrypted Apple Disk Image on my hard disk. Ever since then at some stage Time Machine had decided that there is insufficient disk space and the backup fails.
    When it first began to fail I increased the backup disk space and began a fresh start backup.
    The backup disk is now 1 TB and the total amount on my hard disk to be backed up to backup is 183 gb which includes the disk image which is 40 gb.
    The only change has been the creation of the disk image otherwise everything else is the same. Would it be better to have a number of disk image files and spread the encrypted material across smaller dmgs?

    Initially I was confused about the difference between a sparse image and a sparse bundle but read in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2001162?start=0&tstart=0 what the difference is and see that the sparse bundle appears to have been developed by Apple for exactly my kind of problem.
    You say that "… be aware that disk image files are not backed up at all while the image is mounted."
    I do not wish to disagree but when I was backing up the vanilla dmg and also last night backing the sparse bundle dmg the back up has worked and did work on the mounted disk. In my case the disc is always mounted as it contains the bulk of the files I work on. Perhaps I have misunderstood what you were saying.

  • Time Machine Slow Backup

    I use Time Machine to backup to a G-Technologies 4TB external HD.  The backup is extremely slow, many times saying it will take 69,000 days to back up.  I have almost a TB to backup.  The G-Technology HD will go off line.  I'm not sure if this is a HD problem or Time Machine problem.  My iMac is a IntelMac with 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB of Ram, OSX 10.8.2.  Any thoughts?

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
    If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Time Machine Error: Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Mounted

    Time Machine was working just fine with Time Capsule for the first two days, then today I got the above error message.
    The drive and the backup image both show up in Finder. I can even copy files from the Time Capsule to my hard drive.
    I just can't get Time Machine to backup to the Time Capsule, even if I manually hit "Back up now".
    Any ideas what I can do to fix this?

    I may have fixed this ... I renamed my TC to a shorter name with no space and no apostrophe - just a few letters. That seems to have cleared it up - at least for now. Time will tell ...

    Time Machine first makes a full backup, and then, it makes incremental backups backing up only the files that have changed since the last backup.     Just an FYI - I noticed that during the first Time Machine full backup, the computer does not go to sleep.
    I would also assume that if you computer is asleep, it will not wake for each hourly backup.

    You need to know that backing-up that way is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
    Kernel panics are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
    Disconnect all peripherals, except keyboard and mouse. Reconnect one at a time to see if you can find the culprit.
    If that's no help, run the Apple Hardware Test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
    And perhaps a heavy-duty memory test, such as the free Rember: http://www.kelleycomputing.com/
