Time Machine fixed Safari for me

Ever since the upgrade to webkit safari has refused to open for me. Kept crashing.
I tried all the suggestions posted here but none helped.
Then the light dawned for me. I have time machine with b/u's to august. Looking in TM sure enough there was safari 3.1.2 just sitting there waiting to be called one to help. A quick click on 'restore' and safari was back in business for me.
Sure, I know a revert to a previous version didn't really fix anything. But there comes a time when the effort to fix it isn't worth the hassle.
So I'll just get along with 3.1.2 until a new version comes along that fixes whatever's broke. And I'll watch these discussions to see if it's really fixed before I upgrade again. I use FF mostly anyhow, with safari as a b/u for those few pages that FF won't handle.
Thank you, TM

I'm running 10.8.3 and none of the following solutions worked for me:
1) Waiting for Spotlight to index (no affect)
2) Turning off Spotlight indexing using a sudo command in the Terminal (no affect)
3) Restarting the machine and trying again (I've done this several times - no affect)
4) Be patient (Really? Once I've seen the big city in a speedy TM, there's no way I'm going back to the farm)
These aren't answers. Even if anyone has success with these, they are poor workarounds that don't get at the root problem: Performance for people upgrading from an earlier version  to  TM in 10.8.3 is unacceptable.
I agree with many who've posted on the subject that TM in 10.6.8 worked flawlessly. I never had to wait more than a few hours even for a full, start from scratch backup.
2 to 4k a second is what I get now. That isn't going to cut it when I've got 290Gigs of data to back up. This just doesn't work for me, and I'm not finding a legitimate, universal solution to this problem anywhere.
With this new operating system, Apple has essentially crippled their own product in Time Machine and is forcing users who don't have the time/patience/desire to wait more than a day (or even overnight) to mess with this. Before, it just worked. Now, it's a big headache. I love you Apple, but you're killing me here.

  • Time machine is asking for a password.  What password is it asking for, and where is it?

I'm trying to restore a machine that has ben seriously compromised... I have a disk image, I have backups, I have Time Machine.
Time Machine is asking for a password to restore - there is no password in keychain, no administrator password works, I have no idea what the password to the share is.  I have other machines accessing the share just fine.  My written records say I put it as a stupid password:  guest.  But that doesn't work.  How do I recover this password?
I've tried to recover from the disk image, but Disk Utility says it doesn't have disk space to do so.  I've tried via rsync, and while I seem to have built a computer, it says it cannot find the OS when I attempt to boot.
I'm pretty lost.  Why is Time Machine asking for a password?  Where can I find this password?  Why is it not in Keychain?

Apparently the mybooklive isn't so good about keeping passwords.
    Do:
    Open Safari
    Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks
    Bonjour
    mybooklive
    users
    administrator
    update password
Bizarre solution that I can write to it, retreive it from a working system, but I can't restore from it!  Augh.

  • After upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?

after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?
before the upgrade, i could open time machine without the need for having the back up disk plugged in.

Ok. I got it to work, sort of....
As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.

  • I have 2 auxillary disk drives for my MacBokk Pro. Time Machine uses one for backup and I use the other for storage, but I am unable to create a new folder or drag and drop files or folders to the aux drive.

I am unable to create a new folder on either of my auxillary disk drives.  I can access the files and folders that were there when I transferred one of the drives from a PC.  Time machine uses one for backup and I want to use the other to store photos which are large files.  An help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.  If I reformat the drive will I be able to access the files on it from the MAC.  I do not share the drive with a PC.  The files were originally created on a PC which I no longer use.  I do want to continue to access the files put there by the PC.  I would like to not have to copy them over to the MAC hard drive just to use them.  The second aux drive is new and works fine because it was formatted by the MAC.  I can drag and drop files there and work with just as if they were on the internal drive.

  • Time Machine Backup cancels for no "apparent" reason

    Hello,
I am using Time machine with Snow Leopard and an external WD My Book 1TB HD - I am using the very latest WD firmware/software (made for Snow Leopard) and was making successful automatic backups for several days until recently when the backup started canceling for no apparent reason. I installed the Time Machine buddy widget and found this message:
    Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/GPL III BACKUP/Backups.backupdb
No pre-backup thinning needed: 1.80 GB requested (including padding), 894.51 GB available
Error: Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0
Copied 7393 files (997.6 MB) from volume GPL III HD.
    Backup canceled.
I tried a manual backup and the same message. I waited until the next automatic backups and got the same message - each and every time.
I have searched the Time Machine section and nothing specifically addresses the error message.
Any ideas on what is wrong and how to resolve it? I thought about erasing the HD and starting over but that seems draconian.
    Thanks!

I checked the set-up and it looks fine except the Tips note that a GUID partition is preferred for some purposes (whatever that means) on Intel Macs (such as mine) rather than the Apple Partition Map which is what the WD HD has - although it does note that either will work. Could this be the problem?
No, I guess I need to try to reword that somehow. Was trying to keep it short. It only matters, under some circumstances, on a drive with OSX installed on it.

These are all mds having problems in the Spotlight index on your TM drive.
Could my anti-virus SW be an issue (I am using VirusBarrier X6)?
Quite possibly. Exclude your TM disk from it, or turn it off.
Also exclude your TM disk from Spotlight indexing, at least temporarily, via SYstem Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.
That will likely fix the backup problem.
You really don't need much, if any, anti-virus on a Mac; and many anti-virus products are actually worse than a virus! For more detail, see this post by Klaus1: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10942146&#10942146 or: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2307964
If you're running Windoze, of course, the Windoze side needs all the usual anti- stuff of a PC.

  • Is Time Machine fixed in 10.5.3?

I've been experimenting with the different flavors of OS X Server (standard & advanced) and have read about the issues that Time Machine has caused in the earlier releases. Does anyone know if Apple got it fixed in the latest update? What about with Advanced?

Here's a summary of the steps I've taken...although unfortunately it's still not working.
    - Verified my startup drive and repaired permisisons (a couple were off in the parental controls area)
    - Downloaded the 10.5.3 combo update and reinstalled
    - Repartioned the backup drive (Firewire connected Seagate)
    - Turned off TM, restarted, and turned TM back on...including reselecting the external drive
    - Manually started a backup via the Back Up Now menu option
TM backed up about 22mb (of 220gb) and failed with the error I've consistently gotten..."Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".
I can view the Seagate fine...all I've got is a couple of nested folders with a .InProgress package file that's 52K. I can move the file and folders to the trash and empty, although I get prompted for my password (I'm the admin).
At this point I'm out of ideas to try....

  • Firmware 1.5 (Transition path to QNAP, Time Machine fix)

Firmware 1.5 for Cisco Smart Storage has just been posted.  See announcement link or check the software center directly.   Release notes for the firmware will also be posted shortly.
The biggest news with Cisco fw1.5 is that users can migrate to QNAP branded software via the standard firmware upgrade process.
Upgrade your unit to the new fw1.5
Visit http://www.qnap.com/cisco and download the latest QNAP fw3.5, upgrade with this file
Your unit will now be running the latest feature set from QNAP.
This should give users the ability to receive bug fixes and feature improvements quicker.
    Transistion Disclaimers:
Visit http://www.qnap.com/cisco for a list of feature differences between Cisco fw1.5 and QNAP fw3.5
There is no way to migrate a unit back once you upload a QNAP branded software image.  If you have questions about how the QNAP branded features vary or specific support questions, please post those to the QNAP support forum.
Two specific features are not supported on QNAP firmware: Mozy online backup and Cisco Access Now remote access.
Cisco Small Business Support Center engineers will not be able to help troubleshoot QNAP branded firmware units.  All software support for QNAP branded software will come from QNAP.  Support options are posted at http://www.qnap.com/cisco
HW warranty will still be processed by Cisco regardless of the software loaded on the unit.
Apple Time Machine issue with Lion
This is not fixed in Cisco fw1.5.  Only the generic AFP issue has been addressed.
The path to fix this bug is to migrate to QNAP branded firmware (specifically fw 3.5)

I had no issues migrating a 324 from 1.4 to 1.5 to 3.5.  No data loss (I did back up my data).  This takes a little bit of time so set aside a few hours.
In between FW revs I did check the satus and operation - It has CIFS, AFP, ISCSI and NFS mounts all to check which I did and have no errors to report.  QNAP 3.5 code also fixes TimeMachine access and backp from Lion.
Best to pre-stage the FW first (go download everything prior to the update)   As a final step I did check the file system when I was up on 3.5.
It all worked out very well for me.   Here is what I did:

Before I did this next step I valided the operation of the NSS and the 1.5 load - it all worked fine so Next:

  • Use external drive for both Time Machine and storage for Back to My Mac

    Hi all,
I have been "a Mac" now for over a year and just keep finding cool new things that make me happy I switched. The latest thing is Back to My Mac offered with my Mobile Me account. With a rather convoluted mix of PC/Mac/iOS devices to manage - best $99 I ever spent btw...
I also have a 1TB Time Capsule that I have been using with Time Machine to back up all four of my Mac computers at home. Needless to say, the 1TB is really struggling to handle the amount of data being backed up and certainly leaves no room for anything else.
What I wanted to do was to attach a larger external hard drive via a powered hub to the USB port on the Time Capsule and use it for Time Machine backups while using the internal 1TB drive with Back to My Mac so that I can have remote access to all my data from anywhere without having to leave my computer running at home all the time in order for my laptop to "see" it when I'm away. And, yes, the amount of that data far exceeds what any level of Mobile Me subscription can offer! I should also mention that the hard drive is the only USB device connected through the hub to the Time Capsule at the moment. There are no other devices that might be "getting in the way".
I'm thinking maybe all this is asking too much without the addition of a dedicated file server (Mac Mini, perhaps - not a purchase my budget wants to make).
I understand that the Time Capsule doesn't support partitions, so I bought a Western Digital 2TB Elements drive, connected it to my Macbook Pro and used Disk Utility to reformat the drive from the incompatible NTFS it shipped in to a single, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition. I then made two folders on the drive, one for Time Machine backups and one for Back to My Mac remote storage/access. Great.
However, when I connected the 2TB drive to my Time Capsule I could not see it at all. Time Capsule was reporting problems in the way of a disk error. From within my Airport Utility, I could see the trouble was the external drive. The utility suggested connecting the drive to a Mac and using it's Disk Utility to troubleshoot.
I followed through, checking the disk, etc. and ended up reformatted the drive on my Macbook Pro yet again with the same specifications as before but without the folders and reconnected it to the Time Capsule. Same deal. But now, I can't even remotely connect to the Time Capsule at all. I can see the Time Capsule in the shared area of my Macbook's Finder but can not connect. The connection tries and fails even before it gets to asking me for username and password credentials.
Long story short, first of all, I suppose I would like to know if I'm asking for the impossible?
Second, if what I want to do *is* possible, what steps do I need to take to make it so?
Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions you might have.

Well, I have now reformatted/partitioned my poor WD Elements 2TB drive about a dozen times as well as restarted my 1TB Time Capsule so many times it's no wonder it's as confused as I am! <G>
Last night, at your suggestion, William, and in respect for your continued support, I tried creating two 1TB Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partitions on the WD external USB drive, both with GUID partition tables. Both volumes mounted to my laptop's desktop flawlessly and without issue.
Once the external drive was connected to the Time Capsule, however, it was a crap shoot as to whether or not the drive was recognized at all, reporting a problem with the disk, or, even at one point, mounting one of the two volumes but not both. <sigh>
I read somewhere on the Internet that you need to restart the Time Capsule for volumes on an external USB drive to be recognized.
So I tried that. I connected the freshly partitioned/formatted disk to the Time Capsule and restarted it. This succeed in removing the issue of reporting a nameless drive with a capacity of 0MB. It then reported the drive with its correct name but would not recognize whatever volumes in whatever partitions that particular crack at it contained with the exception of the once, as I mentioned above, when only one of two volumes mounted correctly and was listed with the right name and capacity on the Time Capusule's Setup's Disk tab.
At this point I have given up on my goal to use the external drive with Time Machine to back up my Macs or to hope I will ever be able to see its contents remotely via Back to My Mac. All I would like to do now is simply find a reason why I can't get it successfully connected and playing nice with my Time Capsule in the first place!
Any further suggestions or advice as to what steps I might take next would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you all.

  • Time Machine Hard Drive for other uses other than backups

I use a WD My Studio II, 2 TB Hard Drive.
Time machine uses the drive as its backup drive, but since the the drive is so big I would like to use it as a general hard drive too. In other words, on a single hard drive, can I have Time Machine backing up my Macbook, as well as use the remaining space to store general stuff that is to big for my mackbook.
The may seem a little illogical, but bare in mind I have the RAID 1 setting, so the one drive is automatically backed up onto the 2nd 1TB drive.
I hope this makes sense, and I hope someone has an answer.
    Regards
    H

you might want to consider partitioning your drive, one for TM backups and one for other stuff.

  • Time machine hard drive for transfering files from 2010 MBP to rMBP

    Hello!
I have a couple of questions here!
I will be getting the rMBP in the next few weeks so want to do a bit of housekeeping before transferring across.
    1) What is the best way to clear my current MBP of files and applications that i dont use and are just taking up space? I currently have a 256GB hard drive with 8GB free - there should be no reason for this as my large audio/ Raw photo/ video editing files are on an external hard drive. So i think there must be a lot of flotsam and jetsam on there that needs to be removed as i don't want to carry that from computer to computer!
    2) Is Time machine the best option for this kind of service?
    3) Can anyone recommend an external hard drive for the job? I don't want to rely on thunderbolt ones at the moment so would it just be any usb hard drive seeing as Apple has sodded of firewire?
    Cheers
    K*

    OK, I'll bite:
    1) you can just delete the documents that you don't use by throwing them in the Trash. To delete apps and all associated files (and some will disagree with me or suggest another application) I recommend using AppDelete. I believe it's $13 or so but I have used AppZapper and AppCleaner as well but find that AppDelete finds all associated files.
    2) After you've rid yourself of your 'junk' files, I recommend using Time Machine on a dedicated or partitioned hard drive for backups. When you get your new machine, you can just use Time Machine to restore all of your settings, apps, documents, etc. For everything you ever wanted to know about Time Machine, see  http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html.
    3) A USB drive is definitely the way to go. I would recommend the G-Drive series from Hitachi here. They have all sorts of connections, including USB 2.0 and Firewire 800. When Apple (finally) releases their Thunderbolt>FW800 adapter, you'll be ready. Others might recommend USB 3.0 drives for the speed but I've seen too many posts of, in particular, Western Digital USB 3.0 drives that have problems with the 2012 Macs to go the USB 3.0 route right now. Maybe someone will jump in and recommend a USB 3.0 drive that they actually have working on a 2012 MBP?
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Can Time Machine be used for extra drives?

I have a Mac Pro and currently have two drives in it, a system drive that's using as the startup disc and for most of my use. The 2nd drive is more like a server drive which is used on that system but also shared with all computers on my home network. i use it for things like clipart, backups of itunes from the laptops, media files, etc.
I just installed a 3rd hard drive and have been planning to set it up as a Time Machine drive for my Mac Pro. I have several questions though.
I assume when I do this it will just work as a Time Machine drive for my main system/startup drive, correct?
Is there a way I can use Time Machine for the 2nd drive in my system? In a sense setting up two Time Machine backups, one from the main drive to this new backup drive and the 2nd from the server drive to a 4th drive I can add in the future?
If the 2nd question is a No, is there a way I can set it up so that Time Machine simply backs up both the main drive and that 2nd, server drive, to the Time Machine drive? I really prefer not to use this option since both drives are 1TB and the hard drive I have just gotten as the time machine drive is 1.5TB. I think that should be okay for my main drive since it is only 30% used or so but with backing both onto it I don't think I have enough space to do it well.

Time Machine will back up all and any Mac-formatted drives connected to the system. You can tell it not to (in TM Preferences - Options), but by default it will back up all drives. You can't customise the destination for individual drive backups - they'll all go to one drive (so make sure your TM drive is large enough for all sources - 2 or 3 times as large as the total data usage, preferably).
If you don't want to use TM in this way, you can limit it to one source drive, and back up the other drive to a 4th HD another way - for example, using SuperDuper. This is a clone backup rather than a versioned solution, though.

  • Time Machine keeps asking for password to connect to the Time Capsule server

I just got my MPB back from having the logic board replaced.
Nothing was changed on my Mac OS 10.6.8, except that when my MPB went kaput I used a Windows OS PC and loaded the Air port Utility and did do a firmware upgrade to 7.6.1 for the Time Capsule(TC)
Now that I am trying to do a backup of my MPB I keep getting a message asking me to enter the password for the (TC) server so that Time Machine(TM) can connect to it. I typed in the disk password and the weird thing is that the disk icon flashed quickly showing the TM clock icon and the immediately went to the 3 people holding hands icon. When I waited or forced the backup it would come up with an error stating that my user name and password are incorrect.  The other weird thing is when I put in a wrong password it starts "connecting..." but then hangs causing Sys Prefs to stop responding. I either have to cancel the connection or force quit Sys Prefs.
    Steps already taken:
    - Deleted all the Keychain passwords for the TC
    - Reset the TC both by using the menu option and push button power cycle
    - I have tried using the "Time Capsule password" option for file sharing
It does the same thing with other external drives connected via the USB on the TC. However, that same external drive connected directly to the computer USB port works just fine and the icon stayed as the TM clock icon.
It just does not want to the connect to the TC drives!
I have read about the firmware being the problem, but how do I revert to the previous FW version for the TC?
This is going to be stupid not being able to use the TC drive to do the backups, but for the meantime I am using the external drive connected via USB 2.slow!
    Thanks in advance!

  • How do I make anything on time machine backup available for use

I've been having iMac freezing problems, and it pointed to USB disk problems - my Time Machine disk was thrashing all the time.  So, I cloned my Time Machine drive to a new drive using Disk Utility on my MBP.  Then, I had Macintosh HD intermittent problems, and decided I needed to reinstall Snow Leopard.  Did a clean install of SL after erasing and repartitioning my primary HD.  Ran Disk Utility Verify/Repair disk a few times to make sure disk was okay.  Used Migration Assistant  to reload Applications, and my userid.  Had to create a new admin user to run the Migration Assistant since I needed to use the same user name I had before all this started.  After 3.5 hr reload I noticed a few things - my Desktop files weren't there, and I couldn't find my 29.5GB  iTunes library is missing.  I was running Parallels, and my primary virtual machine (.PVM) is missing as well.
So, I assume everything is stilll on my Time Machione backups, but I probably can't see what I need due to restoring my primary userid from a different admin acct.  For some reason my computer name is now "Walt's iMac (2)", and my HD is "Macintosh HD0".
Is there a way to allow my userid (admin) access to ALL that's on Time Machine.  I'm kind of frantic right now because of the important contents of the Parallels virtual machine.
    Any help would be appreciated.

As Eric stated,  TM will automatically remove older back-ups. In order to keep TM working properly do not, repeat DO NOT mess with it. I'd also recommend lookng over Pondini's articles on Time Machine which you can find by clicking:
