Time Machine Full and I Can't Navigate Time Machine

This gets presented all the time. So moderator if you can find me a solution please do so.
Here's the problem I'm having.
1) My Time Machine says the disk is full but my partition on my external is 360 GB and my internal hard drive is only 150 GB. I gave it 2x the amount of disk space but I'm still out of space.
2) Time Machine is supposedly programmed to delete old backups. Why are my old backups not being deleted.
3) When I enter time machine I cannot navigate to old backups. I click on the arrows and nothing happens. I click on the lines on the right hand side and nothing happens.
So those are my problems. Anyone have answers or solutions to these?

I have the same problem. I just set time machine up to back up my 1TB drive and 120GB system ssd and its been working fine all week. Made a 1.2TB partition on an external for time machine, which should be enough for the 1.12TB combined capacity of my drives, especially considering time machine is claiming to require only 954.1GB. I rearranged a lot of what was on my 1TB drive, pretty much moving everything to a different location as well as deleting a fair bit, and the next backup following this was still processing well after 42 hours when I finally decided to cancel it. After that it reports that the drive isn't big enough for the backup.
"Time Machine needs work space on the backup disk.."
I guess this is the issue. 80GB isn't enough extra work space? And its not deleting old backups to make room, which I thought it is supposed to do. So how much overhead is really necessary? How large do I need to make the backup partition? Yet, the backup will eventually expand to fill all of the available space.. so ***.I really would like to preserve the backups I have prior to making the changes, one of the key reasons to even use time machine, but it seems I'm going to have to delete the old backups and/or reformat the partition in order to continue using time machine without any more hassles in the future.
Any help is appreciated.

I had the same problem today and was able to resolve it without having to do a restore or reset. The problem had something to do with my mail accounts. The upgrade reset my mail settings, switching both my gmail and my .mac mail to "archive all mail". I went into the General Settings, disabled that setting, and resynced the phone. The "other" storage allottment dropped back down to less than a gig.
Before you restore or reset, I would try that first.

    Hello, Melorw44.
Try pressing the <esc> (Escape) key.
If <esc> doesn't clear your full screen, restart your Mac.  When you launch Safari after the restart, the normal sized window should open.
BTW, three finger double tap applies to trackpads. From your responses, I infer that you are not using a trackpad.  However, if you are using a wireless mouse (or other wireless pointing device), low batteries in the device might be causing your inability to control your view.

  • Help- ipod is full and I can't delete songs/playlist

I need help please. My Ipod is currently full and I can't seem to delete songs/playlist to make more room. My I pod is set to maually update. I can connect my Ipod and higlight the songs/playlist I want to delete and right click and delete. But the Ipod still says I have the same amount of songs on it and the same amout of used MB. The songs/playlist are no longer on my Ipod (I can't play them) but I just don't seem to be making room to add more onto my Ipod. I just seem to be deleting more and more from my Ipod without being able to add more on. Help please???
    Ipod   Windows XP

From what I understand you are deleting the playlists. THe playlist only organizes the songs you have in your library. This will not delete the song from the library. In order to get more space, just click on the small box next to the name of the song (The box will not have a check now). THis way you will have the song on your library but will not be loaded on you ipod.

I have a Macbook pro and a new hard disk was installed last march. Today, I have a message telling me that my disk is full and that I can't save anything. But when I checked my disk to see if I have any space left, it shows 170 go of free space!!!
I have deleted some films, juste to make sure but that did not work...
What can I try to see where the problem is?
    Thanks

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another install. Does it go through this time?

  • My Start Up Disk is Full and I can get no acces to anything when the computer starts

The computer turns on and I can get no acces to anything. It display a message "Your Start Up Disk is Full" and comes to a white screen. I can only move the mouse but there is nowhere to click.
How can I delete any files, so the computer can come back to life?? Is there any way I can acces those files??
I'm using 250GB and this Mac has 500GB total memory.

Supposedly one can hold the Shift key down while booting (Safe Mode) and that's supposed to allow one to boot the machine when the startup disk is full.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If that works, then use a storage drive (not TimeMachine) to move excessive files too likely starting with Movies (large and easy) or iTunes supscirptions downloads which have gotten out of control.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Another method is to create a boot drive on a external drive, this then will allow one to option key boot the computer and remove files off of the internal drive, allowing the free space needed for OS X to swap stuff to the drive and operate.
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
Now for some reason it takes rebooting the original drive to get OS X to recognize there is free space available again, so reboot the machine normally (no Shift key). Just saying that because you may be wondering how come it does't register when you delete stuff later.

  • Tells me iDisk is full, and I can't publish my website

    Hello,
I'm using iWeb '09 and recently took on the mobileme 2 months trial period. It will end on the 17th of April.
I began publishing a blog and it worked really well ( I have not more than 7 articles though ).
But now, all of a sudden, on the website main page in iWeb, the bar at the bottom shows me that iDisk is full and that I can't publish the website anymore.
Of course, my iDisk is not full, it has 9.05 Go available out of the 10.77 maximum capacity...
I checked on the Finder of my computer as well as online on the mobileme website and both tell me I still have plenty of space in iDisk.
Thus, I can't publish my last article (pretty small, une page of text and one photo).
If there is anyone who can help, I'll be grateful
    Thank you,
    Nicolas

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First make a backup copy of your Domain.sites2 file that's located in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Then try the following:
    1 - close iWeb.
2 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
3 - go to your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete the contents.
    4 - reboot.
5 - launch iWeb and try again.

  • [SOLVED] sda3 = 100% full, and I can't figure how to clean it out.

It turns out my sda3 partition is 100% full.  My immediate reaction to this apart from being irritated was to clear my pacman cache, thinking this would solve the problem.  It didn't.  I've also tried pruning out some egregiously large log files but that doesn't do anything either.
Apart from clearing the cache and getting rid of log files though I'm not sure what else I can do to get this thing trimmed down to size.  Presumably someone out there has run into a similar situation and solved it?  Any advice on how to deal with it?  Thanks for your time, everyone.

Oddly enough, I just came home with intent to keep hacking away at this issue and I found that I was able to run xinit.  I hadn't been able to do that before due to this disk space issue but I certainly won't say no to a little deus ex machina action.

  • Rented movie not playing. I have 81Mbps Internet and can stream anything else HD. it's not WiFi either because signal strength is full and I can view anything other than rented movies on apple TV unit. it charges me for renting but doesn't play

Rented "Gone Girl" on apple tv. It charges me, but will not play for more than 4 seconds at a time. I have exercised every step of apple's troubleshooting and nothing fixes the problem. I have a very strong, steady 81 Mbps Internet connection speed and can stream any other HD through the apple tv except for this rented movie. This is not the first time this has happened either. I just gave apple $6 for free and am currently watching the movie streaming through my cable provider's on demand channel with ease. Oh yeah, and when I seek apple support for the issue, apple wants $2 just to contact someone! Give me my money back please and I will never attempt to use your poor tv service again.

The limitation of approximately 200 titles has been discussed before, we can't be sure whether it will be something that gets fixed or not. I'm not really sure what your other issues are, if I use search instead of lists, I find whatever I want and am able to rent or purchase subject to those options being available for that particular title.

  • My hard disk is full and I can't get to safe mode

I turned on my iMac (20in 2008 model) and after the apple logo appears, I get a gray screen that says "process 1 exec of sbin/launched failed". I'm pretty sure it's because my hard disk is full. I tried booting up in safe mode, but my wireless keyboard battery died. I put in new batteries, but I need to get to the desktop to reconnect the keyboard. I tried using a usb wired keyboard, but it doesn't power up until I'm on the desktop screen. I don't know what else to do. I need a keyboard to boot to safe mode, but I need to be fully booted to work the keyboard. Any advice would help.

Boot the computer from your OS X installer DVD.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Clean Install of Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.

    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the arrow button below the icon.
Connect an external completely erased USB drive to one of the USB ports. Select Disk Utility from the Utility menu and click on the Continue button. Clone your startup volume to the external drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      3. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      4. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      5. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup volume.
When the above is completed you need to erase the internal drive and reinstall OS X.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
